About the Candle-lit Carol Concert at Christ Church Cathedral

In support of The Unicorn Trust

The Unicorn School, Abingdon, is celebrating 30 years of helping children with dyslexia, autism and other learning challenges with a celebrity candle-lit carol concert at Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford.

Celebrities are lining up to support the school on Saturday, 17 December 2022, at 8.00pm.

Readers will include, Oscar-winning actor Jeremy Irons, Radiohead’s Philip Selway and Shakespearean actress Sinéad Cusack*, they will be reciting some of your favourite Christmas pieces, and you will be captivated by the musical talent of virtuoso pianist Derek Paravicini.

In addition, the comedian and impressionist Rory Bremner will make a video appearance during the evening.

Carols and music will be led by John Lubbock, conductor of the renowned Orchestra of St John’s, with performances from the OSJ Voices choir and children from The Unicorn School.

The Unicorn School, Headmaster, Andrew Day, commented, “We are a small specialist school helping children aged from 7 to 16 who have dyslexia and other learning challenges from Oxon, Bucks and Berks.

“As a result of our individual one-to-one lessons and the amazing dedication of the staff over the past 30 years, nearly 700 children have been supported with strategies to overcome their learning difficulties and put on a path to successful careers.”

Former pupil, Dr Christopher Angwin, adds: “I came to The Unicorn aged 10, from mainstream education where I felt marginalised and bullied. I found The Unicorn was patient and supportive, encouraging my development and allowing me to explore my interests.

“From The Unicorn, I went on to University to gain a first class degree in bio-veterinary science, and then went on to Edinburgh University to study veterinary medicine.”

Christopher qualified as a vet in 2020 and has practised since in the Oxford region.

This one-off carol concert will support the superb work at The Unicorn School, with all monies raised going towards a much-needed extension to house a dedicated food technology classroom.

* All appearances by celebrity supporters are subject to filming commitments.
