About Sue Cheng

Cheung was born in Nottingham to parents who had emigrated from Hong Kong in the 1960s before moving to Coventry. Despite her parents coming from Hong Kong, she has never been to Hong Kong.

At 17, she won a scholarship at the London College of Fashion to study art. She subsequently worked in advertising as an Art Director before switching to freelance design.

Her first picture book Bob & Rob was published in 2013. Her first novel for teenagers, Chinglish, is based on her experiences growing up in the takeaway in Coventry.

It was included in the Guardian’s “Best children’s books of 2019” list, and has won several awards, including the ‘Simply the Book’ category at the 2020 Coventry Inspiration Book Awards and the Best Young Adult Book at the 2020 Diverse Book Awards.
