Cowley Road Carnival Day 2019

About Cowley Road Carnival Day 2019

The procession
Starting at 12.30 from The Plain, the mile-long procession is one of the star attractions of Cowley Road Carnival Day 2019.

Hundreds of people will take part in their groups including many of the schools from the area, Oxford Brookes University, bands of musicians, community groups, and sponsor organisations such as MINI Plant Oxford.

In 2019 the procession theme is “space is the place”. Expect to see costumes and floats with a nod to everything space related – from the Space Race of yesteryear to the 50th anniversary of the first landing of the Moon in July 1969, and on to the future of space travel and science fiction.

Food & Drink
The bustling Carnival market place is also a big draw for Carnival-goers. It’s an opportunity for people to try delicious street food from across the globe – With Carnival favourites like Jerk Chicken and Curried Goat, aromatic and spicy Indonesian dishes as well as Nepalese, Indian, German, West African, and great British classics, there is something new for everyone to try.

Food and drink stalls will be located throughout the festival site alongside non-food stalls offering trinkets, crafts, clothing, face painting and more.

Access to the Cowley Road Carnival
The Carnival area can be accessed from either end of the Cowley Road closure area, from the junction with Magdalen Road and The Plain, and from the many side roads that lead on to Cowley Road.

All of the access points in the Carnival area will have road barriers. These barriers will be manned by stewards, who will move them for disabled access.

Carnival-goers will be asked to pay £1 towards the costs of organising and managing Cowley Road Carnival Day 2019, and to help secure the future of the event.

Getting there
With over 50,000 people expected to attend the event, Cowley Road will be closed to all traffic between 8:00 am and 7:00 pm on that day. The activity extends down Chapel Street and into the car park behind Tesco and along Manzil Way.
