About The Championships Wimbledon 2019

The Championships, Wimbledon, commonly known simply as Wimbledon is a Grand Slam tennis tournament and the 2019 Wimbledon Championships is scheduled to take place from Monday 01 to Sunday 14 July 2019.

Wimbledon is the oldest tennis tournament in the world and is regarded by many as the most prestigious. It has been held at the All England Club in Wimbledon, London, since 1877 and is played on outdoor grass courts.

The day-to-day operations of The Championships are led and conducted by the AELTC – a wholly owned subsidiary of The All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club Limited.

The Grounds are owned by the All England Lawn Tennis Ground plc and consist of 18 grass courts (including Centre Court and No.1 Court), eight American Clay courts and five indoor courts, two Greenset Velvelux and three Greenset Trophy.

Apart from the grass courts, the courts are used all year round by the Club members and LTA-sponsored players. The grass courts are in play from May to September (except Centre Court and other Show Courts which are used only for The Championships). The courts are lent to a number of clubs and organisations, mainly of a national character, for the staging of various events.

In Aorangi Park (the area north of the Centre Court), there are 20 grass courts for practice before and during The Championships.

Wimbledon and the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) have a long-standing relationship dating back to 1888 when the governing body was formed after the All England Lawn Tennis Club passed over the guardianship of the national game.

The relationship still continues today, and funds generated by The Championships are used by the LTA to get more people playing tennis, more often.

The All England Club awarded a total of £34m in prize money to competitors at The Championships, 2018. The Gentlemen’s and Ladies’ Singles Champions each received £2.25m.
