Image: Dancing Cranes by Takahashi Hiromitsu\, 2017 © Hiromitsu Takahashi / The Tolman Collection\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Kabuki Legends: Part Two\n\n\n\nStencil Prints by Takahashi Hiromitsu \n\n\n\nJapanese artist Takahashi Hiromitsu creates dynamic\, colourful prints showing exciting moments in kabuki\, a traditional form of dance-drama. This is the second show in a two-part exhibition of his works in Gallery 29. \n\n\n\nHiromitsu’s striking designs are not portraits of actual actors\, but visualisations of famous kabuki roles. \n\n\n\nIn kabuki\, performers wearing elaborate costumes and make-up use stylised movement and song to enact melodramatic stories about love\, loyalty and the clash between duty and emotion. \n\n\n\nThe works recall Japan’s traditional ukiyo-e woodblock actor prints\, but are made using a different technique – kappazuri\, or stencil printing\, originally used for dyeing kimono. Image: Guercino\, The Cumaean Sibyl with a Putto\, 1651© The National Gallery\, London\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Guercino at Waddesdon: King David and the Wise Women\n\n\n\nOver 350 years after they were painted\, five paintings by renowned Bolognese painter Guercino are on display together for the first time at Waddesdon in a new exhibition. \n\n\n\nThis historic exhibition spotlights one of the great painters of 17th-century Italy\, Giovanni Francesco Barbieri\, known as Guercino (1591-1666). Brought together for the first time since leaving the artist’s studio in 1651 are Waddesdon’s King David alongside two associated paintings of Sibyls from the National Gallery and another Sibyl from the Royal Collection\, painted the same year. \n\n\n\nBorn in the Italian town of Cento\, Guercino was an excellent draughtsman whose compositions were known for their originality. In his lifetime\, he created hundreds of altarpieces and paintings\, becoming one of the most sought-after Italian Baroque painters and enjoying the patronage of popes\, foreign courts\, cardinals and dukes. \n\n\n\nSee\, close-up\, Guercino’s brilliant use of paint to depict silk\, flesh\, ermine\, paper\, wood and stone while conjuring up ideas about inspiration and contemplation\, sight and foresight\, poetry and prophecy. This is an opportunity to explore how King David relates to the sibyls. \n\n\n\nAlso on display and never before seen in public is Guercino’s recently rediscovered depiction of Moses. This is one of the most important additions to Guercino’s body of work and adds to our understanding of his early maturity\, a period considered by many to be his greatest for the dynamism\, vigour and spontaneity of his painting. \n\n\n\nWhat is a Sybil? \n\n\n\nThese female prophets or seers from classical antiquity were popular subjects in the 17th century\, appealing to Baroque artists as models of female authority. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore about Guercino\n\n\n\nGuercino (Giovanni Francesco Barbieri)\, Self-Portrait\, 1630-32. He acquired the nickname ‘Guercino’ (‘Little Squinter’) due to strabismus (the condition of having a squint). \n\n\n\nAccording to the biographer Carlo Cesare Malvasia\, the infant Guercino was awoken by a loud noise with such a start that he was left with his right eye permanently fixed at an angle. DESCRIPTION:Mohammed Sami: ‘After the Storm’ Exhibition\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Mohammed Sami: ‘After the Storm’\n\n\n\nBlenheim Art Foundation is pleased to announce a major solo exhibition by Mohammed Sami coming to Blenheim Palace. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition\, ‘After the Storm’\, will take place from Tuesday\, 09 July\, to Sunday\, 20 October\, 2024\, marking a decade of Blenheim Art Foundation’s award-winning contemporary art programme. \n\n\n\nThrough exploring retroactive memories\, his paintings capture a world shaped not just by the weight of the past but also the present\, creating scenarios that are often left to the viewer to interpret through the lens of their own experiences. \n\n\n\nAs Sami has previously written\, “Painting becomes the only medium to grasp what is not there in painting anymore”. \n\n\n\nSami’s paintings feature landscapes\, interiors and more abstracted scenes whilst always being devoid of the human figure. In 2023\, Sami’s work was the subject of a solo exhibition at Camden Art Centre\, London\, his first solo institutional exhibition in the UK\, which toured to De La Warr Pavilion\, Bexhill-on-Sea. \n\n\n\nHe has participated in group exhibitions at the Carnegie Museum of Art\, Pittsburgh (2022); Aichi Triennale (2022); the Whitechapel Gallery\, London (2022); the Hayward Gallery\, London (2021); and Towner Eastbourne (2020) and his paintings are held in many notable places such as the Tate\, London; Museum of Modern Art\, New York; and Moderna Museet\, Stockholm.

The first theatre was built in 1836\, and a second in 1886. In 1934\, the third New Theatre opened. \n\n\n\nThe theatre has been owned by several different companies and undergone several name changes. It is now owned by the Ambassador Theatre Group and hosts everything from ballet and opera to musicals. \n\n\n\nOn performance days\, the Box Office opens at noon and closes 15 minutes after the show starts. If there is a performance on a Sunday or Bank Holiday\, Box Office will open 2 hours before the show begins and close 15 minutes after the show starts. \n\n\n\nThere is a large air-conditioned bar with seating located below the Stalls Foyer\, two further bars in the Circle Foyer and an additional one at the back of the balcony.
