Image: Watercolour by Mary Buckland (nee Morland)\, possibly painted in 1817\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Breaking Ground\n\n\n\nFrom the first-ever scientific description of a dinosaur to the revelation that Earth is much older than the Biblical 6\,000 years\, the 19th century saw a network of naturalists forge new ways of thinking about the history of life and our planet. \n\n\n\nBreaking Ground is a new exhibition at the Oxford University Museum of Natural History that charts these significant developments in palaeontology and geology through a cast of characters – both the celebrated and the unsung – who helped to establish new scientific methods and ideas. \n\n\n\nCentred on an Oxford couple – William Buckland\, geologist and palaeontologist\, and Mary Buckland (née Morland)\, a scientific illustrator\, it explores some of the most historically important dinosaur discoveries ever made. \n\n\n\nMarking the 200th anniversary of the first description of a dinosaur\, Breaking Ground presents fossil material from the first three dinosaurs to be scientifically named – Megalosaurus\, Iguanodon\, and Hylaeosaurus\, including the iconic jaw that started it all. \n\n\n\nAlongside these historic specimens are more than 100 other objects\, including fossils\, skeletons\, casts\, and models. There is also archival material such as lithograph prints and watercolour paintings beautifully documenting the fieldwork\, landscapes\, and discoveries made during this fertile period of early palaeontology. \n\n\n\nWhile celebrating these important scientific developments\, Breaking Ground also investigates some inequalities of the period. William and Mary Buckland were married in 1825 and worked together to lay the foundations of modern palaeontology\, though history tends to remember their contributions differently. \n\n\n\nFamiliar names from 19th-century palaeontology are typically those of powerful people associated with certain institutions and publications; lost to history are workers in other\, often colonised\, countries who dug for specimens\, lower-status miners and quarriers around the UK\, and most women\, regardless of class or wealth. \n\n\n\nThese include Mary Anning\, who\, though more recently celebrated\, faced financial struggles for most of her life and\, as a woman\, was unable to join the Geological Society of London or present her own ideas. This is despite making some of the most important fossil discoveries of the century\, several of which will be on display in the exhibition. \n\n\n\nBreaking Ground will also offer the first showcase of items from the newly acquired Buckland archive. The drawings\, prints and paintings made by Mary Buckland include those used in the description of Megalosaurus by William Buckland in 1824. \n\n\n\nAs these illustrations helped to spread understanding of extinct groups of animals and plants among the 19th-century scientific community\, they challenged any literal interpretations of the Bible. A much older planet was revealed\, one that had undergone periods of glaciation – a controversial idea at the time – and in which hyaenas once populated the caves of Britain. \n\n\n\nComplementing the exhibition is a sculptural installation by British artist Angela Palmer. Torus of Time is a visual and tactile symbol of the deep time that was being uncovered by these pioneering 19th-century palaeontologists. This hyaena jaw was found by William Buckland in Kirkdale cave in North Yorkshire in the 1820s. He initially thought the fossil showed evidence of the Great Flood having transported the animal to England. However\, further analysis showed the cave to have been a hyaena den from the Late Pleistocene\, 120\,000 years ago\, when Yorkshire would have been a lot warmer.\n\n\n\nHippopotamus. This watercolour by Mary Buckland (nee Morland)\, possibly painted in 1817\, is marked ‘MM’ – one of the few drawings signed with Mary’s maiden name. Morland was a gifted scientific illustrator whose drawings were used in scientific publications for William Buckland and others including Georges Cuvier.\n\n\n\nIchthyosaur with stomach contents. Exceptionally preserved\, this is one of Mary Anning’s finds of an ichthyosaur. Fish bones and scales\, visible inside the stomach area of the animal\, reveal the last meal of this marine reptile.\n\n\n\nMegalosaurus Jaw. This is the iconic fossilised jaw of Megalosaurus\, found in Stonesfield\, Oxfordshire\, and was used by William Buckland in the first ever scientific description of a dinosaur\, in 1824.\n\n\n\nProfessor and Mrs. Buckland and Frank. This silhouette of the Bucklands\, created by Auguste Edouart in 1829\, celebrates how the whole family was involved in the study of palaeontology.\n\n\n\nSynoptic view of the leading phenomena of Geology. The first plate in William Buckland’s Bridgewater Treatise VI: Geology and mineralogy considered with reference to natural theology. The Bridgewater Treatises was a series of eight volumes highlighting how science and faith could coexist. Buckland’s contribution argued that geology and palaeontology were consistent with the Bible and natural theology.

Chan Painting\, Lui Shou-Kwan\, 1969.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Cheung Yee and his 1960s Hong Kong Contemporaries\n\n\n\nThis exhibition showcases newly-acquired works for the Ashmolean by the Hong Kong artist Cheung Yee (1936–2019). DESCRIPTION:Ashmolean NOW: Daphne Wright – Deep-Rooted Things\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Ashmolean NOW: Daphne Wright – Deep-Rooted Things\n\n\n\nAshmolean NOW: Daphne Wright – Deep-Rooted Things is the fourth in the Ashmolean NOW exhibition series\, where contemporary artists are invited to create new work inspired by the Ashmolean’s historical collections. \n\n\n\nThe fourth instalment of the Ashmolean Now series focuses on sculptures by Irish artist Daphne Wright. \n\n\n\nConceived in partnership with the Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin\, the exhibition will feature several new works in plaster\, which consider the tradition of still lifes and respond to the sculptures in the Cast Gallery. \n\n\n\nDaphne Wright works in unfired clay and jesmonite and has long experimented with casting.  \n\n\n\nCentral to the exhibition will be Sons and Couch\, a life-size sculptural artwork cast in jesmonite of the artist’s sons. They have featured in their mother’s moving and personal work since an early age. DESCRIPTION:Sculpture in the Garden at Greys Court\, Henley-on-Thames\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Sculpture in the Garden\n\n\n\nFrom 14 June to 13 July 2024\, the lawns\, walled gardens and Cromwellian building at Greys Court will be filled with sculptures of all sizes and mediums for you to admire. \n\n\n\nOxford Sculptors Group (OSG) will showcase art pieces in the stunning gardens of the National Trust property near Henley-on-Thames. \n\n\n\nThere will be sculptures in a wide range of media like bronze\, stone\, steel\, wood\, glass and ceramics\, with an equally broad price range\, throughout the walled gardens and around the main lawn. \n\n\n\nSmaller items will also be on show in the historic Cromwellian Building\, which is not normally open to visitors\, and the art pieces will include both abstract and natural. \n\n\n\nAs well as being able to look at and admire the sculptures\, visitors can also purchase any they particularly love and have them delivered when the exhibition concludes. \n\n\n\nOSG sculptors will be on hand to welcome you. \n\n\n\nLady Brunner was a long time patron of the arts\, and it’s in this spirit that local art is celebrated at Greys Court. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is free\, but normal admission charges apply for the venue. \n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nAge guidance: Suitable for all ages. \n\n\n\nAccessibility \n\n\n\n\nThe sculpture will be around the walled gardens and inside the Cromwellian and Loggia.\n\n\n\nThe walled gardens are hard-standing but uneven in places\, with a couple of steps around the pergola area.\n\n\n\n\nGood to knowDogs are not permitted in the walled gardens \n\n\n\nAbout the Oxford Sculptors GroupThe Oxford Sculptors Group was formed in 2002 and has around 90 established sculptors based in Oxfordshire and surrounding counties. The group includes many full-time professional sculptors and some self-taught artists. They have put on exhibitions in several other National Trust properties\, at various art weeks\, and within art galleries.

The festival also offered a full-day experience\, including VIP dining in the Palace’s renowned State Rooms\, leisurely walks through its expansive grounds\, or a waterside picnic. Sadly\, Nocturne Live did not return to the Palace in 2026\, marking the end of this chapter in its history. \n\n\n\nNocturne Live 2025 will turn The Great Court at Blenheim Palace into a grand arena with world-class acts and 10\,000 seats. \n\n\n\nIt can be an all-day affair with VIP dining in the famous State Rooms\, a stroll in the palace’s vast grounds\, or a waterside picnic. It can also be an evening gig for those who just want to hear their favourite live music. \n\n\n\nSince its inception in 2015\, the Nocturne Live concert series\, which has featured performances from the likes of Elton John\, Kylie Minogue\, Gary Barlow\, Simply Red\, Nile Rodgers\, Noel Gallagher\, Gregory Porter\, Van Morrison\, Tears for Fears\, Gladys Knight\, Elvis Costello\, Simple Minds and Ennio Morricone amongst many others. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2025 Line-up\n\n\n\nThursday 19 JuneRichard Ashcroft has been announced as the first headliner of next summer’s Nocturne Live concert series which returns to Blenheim Palace’s stunning Great Court. Joining Ashcroft are one of the most successful acts of the ’90s\, Lightning Seeds\, celebrating their 35th Anniversary with enduring hits. For those with State Room Dining tickets\, hospitality will begin from 4.30pm onwards. You’ll receive full information in advance of the concert. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArrival and depature\n\n\n\nYour Nocturne Live ticket will allow you to arrive at any time during the day of the concert and enjoy the beautiful grounds of Blenheim Palace. Re-entry is not permitted except in extreme circumstances. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow to get to Nocturne Live 2025\n\n\n\nBus:If you are travelling from the local Oxford area\, the Oxford Bus Company will run a Special 500 Bus service which will pick up from Oxford Rail Station and stop at Summertown\, Oxford Parkway Station and Kidlington en route to Blenheim Palace. The bus will return via the same route and will also stop at Pear Tree on the return journey. Buses will depart approximately every 30 minutes from Oxford Station between 9.00am and 8.00pm. After the concert\, buses will leave when they are full. The last bus will depart 45 minutes after the concert finishes. You will have the opportunity to buy your bus tickets at the same time as your concert tickets. \n\n\n\nCar:If you do decide to drive\, please be aware that Blenheim Palace is a UNESCO World Heritage site and its infrastructure wasn’t designed for a large number of cars to depart simultaneously at the end of a concert. There are three main exit roads that lead to a common main road which\, despite best efforts\, can become congested at peak times.

With a 3/4 option\, Half & Quarter Challenges\, and the Cirencester 10K – there’s a great weekend in the Cotswolds to look forward to! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFull Continuous – 100 km \n\n\n\nCirencester Loop \n\n\n\nJoin the full-on 100 km Challenge – setting out from Cirencester on Saturday morning heading north into the rolling green hills of the Cotswolds. There is 2\,250 m of ascent – with undulating climbs\, which whilst testing your legs will reward you with some breath-taking views. The continuous challenge will see you stopping every ~12 – 13 km for stops & refreshments\, with a main halfway stop in Wotton\, before heading back towards Cirencester. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFull 2 Day Daylight – 100 km \n\n\n\nCirencester Loop \n\n\n\nThe 2 Day Full 100km Challenge breaks down the route into two halves of 53km on Day 1 starting & finishing at the basecamp in Cirencester\, and then 47km on Day 2 – you will get to experience the route in daylight as well as the opportunity to get some rest and sleep overnight. Camp at the fully supported camp in Wotton-under-Edge on Saturday night where you will have entertainment\, hot food & more. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n3/4 Challenge – 76 km \n\n\n\nPainswick to Cirencester \n\n\n\nA perfect choice if you’ve done a Half Challenge before – and want to ‘up’ the distance without committing to a ‘Full’ option. The route is 3/4 of the Full Challenge – so it starts at Painswick\, takes in the fantastic 2nd 1/4 Challenge route to Wotton\, and then on through the Cotswolds to the finish line at Cirencester basecamp (the 2nd 1/2 of the Full Challenge) after a tough 76 km. Do it as a ‘Continuous’ challenge –  rest overnight after the 1st 33 km & camp at the Wotton basecamp (or hotel/ B&B) – and do the remaining 47 km (2nd half) on Sunday morning. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n1st 1/2 Challenge – 53 km \n\n\n\nCirencester to Wotton \n\n\n\nSaturday 21 June 2025 \n\n\n\nThe 1st half of the Challenge starts at the basecamp in Cirencester and finishes in Wotton-under-Edge. The route is tough with 1600 metres of climb – and there’s with steep ascents and descents taking you into the heart of this beautiful landscape with magnificent views out to the West.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2nd 1/2 Challenge – 47 km \n\n\n\nWotton to Cirencester \n\n\n\nA great option if you want to join someone on the Full Challenge on Saturday evening to finish with them\, or set off with most others on Saturday morning or early Sunday morning on your own fantastic challenge on Sunday. A start at Wotton – and then some fantastic Cotswold scenery on the way back to the very welcome finish line and celebration back at Cirencester basecamp. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n1st 1/4 Challenge – 23 km \n\n\n\nCirencester to Painswick \n\n\n\nThe 1st Quarter of the Cotswold Way Challenge will start from the basecamp in Cirencester – the route is a tough section with steep ascents and descents taking you into the heart of this beautiful landscape.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2nd 1/4 Challenge – 30 km \n\n\n\nPainswick to Wotton \n\n\n\nArguably the most scenic stretch of the whole Cotswold Way route – and one of the toughest ‘quarters’. Starting at Painswick\, you will head towards Coaley Peak with its breathtaking views of the Severne Valley\, before heading onwards to Wotton-Under-Edge for a celebration & hot meal. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCirencester – 10 km \n\n\n\nCirencester Loop \n\n\n\nA looped 10 km route from the main Cirencester basecamp – taking in the wonderful surrounding countryside. Families are welcome. DESCRIPTION:Forever Now festival at The National Bowl\, Milton Keynes\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Forever Now Festival 2025\n\n\n\nForever Now festival will debut on 22 June 2025 at the legendary venue The National Bowl\, Milton Keynes\, and the organisers have confirmed a myriad of names as performing their event\, including the likes of electronic innovators Kraftwerk\, punk icon Billy Idol\, and alt-rock legends The The. \n\n\n\nThe star-studded lineup also includes Death Cult\, Johnny Marr\, The Psychedelic Furs\, The Jesus & Mary Chain\, and the Happy Mondays. \n\n\n\nOther performers include Peter Murphy\, The Damned\, Public Image Limited\, Berlin\, Theatre of Hate\, She Wants Revenge\, Chameleons\, The Motels and UK Decay. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe day intends to be an all-day homage to alternative culture from the late 1970s to 1990s\, featuring music from a wide variety of genres and styles across this time. \n\n\n\nThe festival is billed as the UK sister event of the critically acclaimed US festival Cruel World\, now in its fourth iteration\, produced and promoted by Goldenvoice in Pasadena\, California. \n\n\n\nAll performers will be split across two stages\, with a third stage called The Echo Chamber\, featuring in-depth interviews\, panel discussions\, and artist conversations curated by music journalist John Robb\, to explore the stories behind the music\, delving into the cultural movements and personal narratives that shaped this musical era. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nPrices:Pre-sale tickets will be available starting 05 December\, with a limited release priced from £85.
