Chan Painting\, Lui Shou-Kwan\, 1969.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Cheung Yee and his 1960s Hong Kong Contemporaries\n\n\n\nThis exhibition showcases newly-acquired works for the Ashmolean by the Hong Kong artist Cheung Yee (1936–2019). It will be the first substantial display of his work outside Hong Kong\, including sculpture and works on paper. \n\n\n\nCheung Yee was a leading figure of innovation in the Hong Kong art scene\, especially during the 1960s\, when the city established its own identity as an artistic centre. \n\n\n\nHis work will be shown alongside those by Lui Shou-Kwan (1919–75)\, Wucius Wong (b.1936)\, Liu Kuo-sung (b.1932) and others from the avant-garde Circle Art Group. \n\n\n\nDisplayed with his peers\, the works highlight Cheung Yee’s connection with a generation of modern art pioneers from Hong Kong and Taiwan in the latter 20th century. \n\n\n\nAlthough Cheung Yee is mainly known as a sculptor\, the Ashmolean exhibition will include some outstanding examples of his experiments with works on paper. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nPrices:Admission is FREE \n\n\n\nDate and times:From 30 November 2024 to 09 November 2025 \n\n\n\nThe museum is open every day from 10.00am to 5.00pm \n\n\n\nLocation:Gallery 11\, ground floor

DESCRIPTION:Ashmolean NOW: Daphne Wright – Deep-Rooted Things\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Ashmolean NOW: Daphne Wright – Deep-Rooted Things\n\n\n\nAshmolean NOW: Daphne Wright – Deep-Rooted Things is the fourth in the Ashmolean NOW exhibition series\, where contemporary artists are invited to create new work inspired by the Ashmolean’s historical collections. \n\n\n\nThe fourth instalment of the Ashmolean Now series focuses on sculptures by Irish artist Daphne Wright. \n\n\n\nConceived in partnership with the Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin\, the exhibition will feature several new works in plaster\, which consider the tradition of still lifes and respond to the sculptures in the Cast Gallery. \n\n\n\nDaphne Wright works in unfired clay and jesmonite and has long experimented with casting.  \n\n\n\nCentral to the exhibition will be Sons and Couch\, a life-size sculptural artwork cast in jesmonite of the artist’s sons. They have featured in their mother’s moving and personal work since an early age. Photograph by Julian Broad\, courtesy of TIN MAN ART\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout This Is What You Get\n\n\n\nSTANLEY DONWOOD | RADIOHEAD | THOM YORKE \n\n\n\nThis major exhibition will explore the visual art of Stanley Donwood and Thom Yorke and the iconic images of Radiohead. \n\n\n\nMore than 180 objects will be on display from the artists’ 30-year collaboration\, including original paintings for album covers\, digital compositions\, etchings\, unpublished drawings\, and lyrics in their sketchbooks. \n\n\n\nThis Is What You Get will reveal how the artists experimented with early technology\, and explore the evolution of the images for Radiohead’s legendary albums and Yorke’s later projects. To date the band\, which was formed in Oxfordshire in the mid-1980s\, has sold 30 million records worldwide. \n\n\n\nDeveloped and curated with Stanley Donwood and Thom Yorke\, the show will offer a unique opportunity to look at the creative forces behind some of the most important and influential music of the past few decades. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nPrices:Prices £8.10 to £16.20 \n\n\n\nTimed tickets are in operation. DESCRIPTION:Remembrances of War \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Remembrances of War: Paul Joyce Exhibition\n\n\n\nThe Soldiers of Oxfordshire Museum presents Remembrances of War\, an evocative exhibition of paintings by artist Paul Joyce.  \n\n\n\nBorn in 1940 under the shadow of the Second World War\, Joyce draws on personal childhood memories of bomb-scarred London as well as the wider cultural memory of a world devastated by conflict. \n\n\n\nBile of Beans\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe collection juxtaposes scenes of smouldering rubble in South London with imagined depictions of Hiroshima and the destruction across Europe.  \n\n\n\nEveryday objects such as Bovril and baked beans appear alongside military aircraft and apocalyptic landscapes\, reflecting the absurd collision of the ordinary and the catastrophic during wartime. \n\n\n\nDown!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInfluenced by artists such as Paul Nash and Eric Ravilious\, Joyce’s works combine pastoral scenes with striking\, militarised elements. Devoid of human figures\, the paintings instead speak through objects\, buildings\, and machines—haunting reminders of the people whose lives were shaped by war. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition is enriched by artefacts from the museum’s collection\, offering further insight into how ordinary people endured and adapted to extraordinary times. DESCRIPTION:About Pick your own Pumpkins at Millets Farm\n\n\n\nMillets Farm’s pumpkin field is set to open again this Autumn\, offering families the chance to pick plump pumpkins\, explore spooky props\, and enjoy a fun-filled seasonal experience.  \n\n\n\nWith a range of Halloween-themed decorations and plenty of photo opportunities\, visitors can grab a wheelbarrow and choose pumpkins of all shapes\, sizes\, and colours—perfect for cooking or carving. \n\n\n\nThe pumpkins are homegrown at Millets Farm. Early in the season\, visitors may see the original stalks where pumpkins were harvested\, and the patch is regularly topped up from other parts of the farm to ensure a plentiful supply for all. \n\n\n\nSpecial sessions are also available\, including SEND sessions with reduced noise and exclusive early access\, and a Dog Day for four-legged friends. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPick your own Pumpkins at Millets Farm\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTicket prices vary depending on the date attending. Families can wander through the pumpkin field to pick their own farm-grown pumpkins and squashes in a rainbow of colours\, perfect for Halloween. \n\n\n\nThe experience offers plenty to keep everyone entertained. Guests can admire creative displays and installations in the beautifully decorated pumpkin tunnel\, enjoy a variety of interactive fete games\, whizz around the track on mini tractors\, and try their hand at mini golf.  \n\n\n\nStory corner and song time will run throughout the day\, while tractor and trailer rides provide the best view of the pumpkin patch. Children can also climb and play on the bale stack and are encouraged to dress up for a chance to win in the daily fancy dress competition. \n\n\n\nLive music will add to the festive atmosphere each day\, alongside a wide choice of food and drink. Guest food trucks and a licensed bar will complement the Tractor Café\, which will be serving Halloween-inspired specials all day long. \n\n\n\nRectory Farm promises an October experience full of fun\, festivity\, and seasonal charm—one not to be missed. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking and visitor information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTickets are priced at £8.50 per person (inclusive of booking fee). No refunds will be given to those arriving after this time.\n\n\n\nOn Sundays\, the event closes at 4.00pm\, with the last entry at 3.00pm.\n\n\n\nThe farm shop will be open from 9.00am to 5.30pm daily (4.00pm on Sundays).\n\n\n\nThe kitchen closes at 2.00pm daily.\n\n\n\nThe Pumpkin Patch opens at 8.30am every day\, with 30 minutes entry slots bookable until 3.30pm. The event closes daily at 5.00pm\, with last entry at at 5.00pm. Your ticket is valid for the whole day.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVisitor information\n\n\n\n\nTickets are non-refundable or transferable to another day. If you cannot attend on the day you have booked\, you are welcome to pass your tickets on to friends and family who can enter the event with your booking reference – no need to let us know in advance.\n\n\n\nIf Rectory Farm cancels the event you are booked on\, a full refund will be issued.\n\n\n\nDogs on leads are allowed in the cafe and play area but not in the Pumpkin Patch event.\n\n\n\nOn event days\, there will be no access to the PYO field or site without a ticket. The shop\, cafe and wooden play area will be open as usual for all visitors\, and ready-picked pumpkins can be purchased here if preferred.\n\n\n\nWristbands will be issued to all visitors and inspected around the site.\n\n\n\nRectory Farm cannot guarantee that all pumpkin varieties will be available for picking every day.\n\n\n\nRectory Farm has made every effort to grow quality pumpkins. However\, they cannot guarantee that all pumpkins will last until 31 October.\n\n\n\nThe ground will be wet and uneven\, so wear wellies and bring weather-appropriate clothing.\n\n\n\nThe fields will not be closed on rainy days\, and tickets will not be transferable because of the weather.\n\n\n\nAll children under 16 must be closely supervised at all times.\n\n\n\nPumpkins can be paid for in the farm shop or the outdoor payment huts before leaving the site. Cash and card payments are accepted.\n\n\n\nThe ground is uneven in places on the farm\, making it likely difficult for pushchairs or wheelchairs.\n\n\n\nIn addition to the café offering snacks\, hot and cold lunches\, and hot and cold drinks\, there will be a coffee van and food vendors on site close to the pumpkin fields and some indoor and outdoor seating.\n\n\n\nPlease note that only food purchased on the premises can be consumed during your visit. No picnics\, please.\n\n\n\nThere is ample parking on site. Please be prepared for a ten-minute walk from your parking space to the ticket entry.\n\n\n\nPlease bring strong carrier bags to carry your pumpkins home. Rectory Farm can provide lightweight plastic bags for 10p each.\n\n\n\nStandard orange pumpkins and crown prince squashes will be charged at £1.20/kg\, reduced to £1/kg if a single pumpkin is over 8kg in weight. Any other varieties are charged at £2.50/kg.\n\n\n\nTractor/trailer rides are included in the ticket price but depend on the weather. They are run at the discretion of Rectory Farm based on weather and ground conditions.\n\n\n\nToilets can be found close to the event hub\, with additional toilet facilities in the play area behind the shop and café and in the pumpkin field.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGetting there\n\n\n\nPut postcode OX33 1HF in your Sat Nav then follow the road signs as you get closer. The  farm shop\, pick your own and cafe entrance is opposite to our main farm yard so you might even spot a tractor. \n\n\n\nThere’s plenty of free parking and disabled spaces near the top of the car park by the shop. DESCRIPTION:The Camera Helps: A Definitive Retrospective of the Work of Paddy Summerfield\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Camera Helps: A Definitive Retrospective of the Work of Paddy Summerfield\n\n\n\nPaddy Summerfield (1947–2024) was a photographer who developed a new psychological vision of photography\, turning the camera on the innermost workings of the human mind and heart. \n\n\n\nDespite an ongoing battle with bipolar disorder\, leading the photographer to continue living with his parents in Oxford\, Summerfield rose to prominence in the 1980s. Later\, his five critically acclaimed publications depicted Summerfield’s most intense and enduring photographic obsessions: desire and alienation. \n\n\n\nThis substantial retrospective of the photographer’s work shows the stages of Summerfield’s creative evolution through comprehensive installations inspired by his five major publications as well as other significant bodies of work. \n\n\n\nHighlights on display include: \n\n\n\n\nThe Oxford Pictures 1968-78\, a series capturing students during the summer term at Oxford. Close in age but feeling like an outsider\, Summerfield found a shared sense of loneliness in his subjects. Though set beside rivers\, college lawns\, and Oxford streets\, the images evoke the insecurities of youth\, including longing\, isolation\, and sexual anxiety\, with solitary figures reflecting his own experience.\n\n\n\nTony Lights Up (2016)\, an unpublished short photo-essay and portrait of ‘Tony’\, a familiar figure at the time to local people\, living in sheltered accommodation. Summerfield accompanied Tony on his daily routine of asking for small change\, laughing at the world around him\, and betting on dogs – portraying his pleasure in the quiet satisfaction of lighting a cigarette.\n\n\n\nMother and Father (Dewi Lewis Publishing\, 2014)\, a moving and poignant journal of the final years of his parents’ sixty-year marriage. From 1997 to 2007\, Summerfield documented his mother’s worsening Alzheimer’s and his father’s unceasing dedication to caring for her.\n\n\n\n\nThe exhibition also offers a glimpse of both the physicality and mastery of Summerfield’s unique and idiosyncratic relationship with the craft of photographic print making. \n\n\n\nThis exhibition is part of Photo Oxford. \n\n\n\nA small display – Paddy Summerfield: Order out of chaos – will be open from the end of August until 30 November in Blackwall Hall.
