SUMMARY:Cheung Yee and his 1960s Hong Kong contemporaries
DESCRIPTION:Cheung Yee and his 1960s Hong Kong Contemporaries. Images (left to right): Everlasting 2/50\, Cheung Yee\, 1977\, red relief on cast paper. Family\, Cheung Yee\, 1960-1969. Chan Painting\, Lui Shou-Kwan\, 1969.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Cheung Yee and his 1960s Hong Kong Contemporaries\n\n\n\nThis exhibition showcases newly-acquired works for the Ashmolean by the Hong Kong artist Cheung Yee (1936–2019). It will be the first substantial display of his work outside Hong Kong\, including sculpture and works on paper. \n\n\n\nCheung Yee was a leading figure of innovation in the Hong Kong art scene\, especially during the 1960s\, when the city established its own identity as an artistic centre. \n\n\n\nHis work will be shown alongside those by Lui Shou-Kwan (1919–75)\, Wucius Wong (b.1936)\, Liu Kuo-sung (b.1932) and others from the avant-garde Circle Art Group. \n\n\n\nDisplayed with his peers\, the works highlight Cheung Yee’s connection with a generation of modern art pioneers from Hong Kong and Taiwan in the latter 20th century. \n\n\n\nAlthough Cheung Yee is mainly known as a sculptor\, the Ashmolean exhibition will include some outstanding examples of his experiments with works on paper. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nPrices:Admission is FREE \n\n\n\nDate and times:From 30 November 2024 to 09 November 2025 \n\n\n\nThe museum is open every day from 10.00am to 5.00pm \n\n\n\nLocation:Gallery 11\, ground floor

SUMMARY:Images of Authority: Portraits Between Iran and Europe
DESCRIPTION:Images of Authority: Portraits Between Iran and Europe\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Images of Authority: Portraits Between Iran and Europe\n\n\n\nThis free exhibition examines the power of portraits in shaping the image of three contemporaneous rulers: Fath Ali Shah Qajar (1797–1834)\, King George III (1760–1820)\, and Napoleon Bonaparte (1799–1814)\, offering a fascinating reflection on the role of imagery in both personal and political life. \n\n\n\nJuxtaposing works on different media from Iran\, Britain\, and France\, the display reveals the strategies these leaders and their image-makers used to convey authority\, ambition\, and personality. \n\n\n\nFor the first time in over a century\, the exhibition also presents two recently restored Qajar paintings\, alongside insights from their conservation discoveries. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking informatio\n\n\n\nPrices: \n\n\n\nFree \n\n\n\nLocation: \n\n\n\nGallery 29 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSelected artworks on display\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Seated Portrait of Fath Ali Shah of Iran retouched & conserved\, about 1798\, oil on canvas © Ashmolean Museum\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Portrait of a setar player\, 1797–1798. SUMMARY:Ashmolean NOW: Daphne Wright – Deep-Rooted Things
DESCRIPTION:Ashmolean NOW: Daphne Wright – Deep-Rooted Things\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Ashmolean NOW: Daphne Wright – Deep-Rooted Things\n\n\n\nAshmolean NOW: Daphne Wright – Deep-Rooted Things is the fourth in the Ashmolean NOW exhibition series\, where contemporary artists are invited to create new work inspired by the Ashmolean’s historical collections. \n\n\n\nThe fourth instalment of the Ashmolean Now series focuses on sculptures by Irish artist Daphne Wright. \n\n\n\nConceived in partnership with the Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin\, the exhibition will feature several new works in plaster\, which consider the tradition of still lifes and respond to the sculptures in the Cast Gallery. \n\n\n\nDaphne Wright works in unfired clay and jesmonite and has long experimented with casting.  \n\n\n\nCentral to the exhibition will be Sons and Couch\, a life-size sculptural artwork cast in jesmonite of the artist’s sons. They have featured in their mother’s moving and personal work since an early age. This new piece is currently a work in progress. \n\n\n\nAlso on display will be Fridge Still Life (2021)\, which has not been on public display previously\, alongside other works by Wright and objects from the Ashmolean’s own collection. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nPrices:Admission is FREE \n\n\n\nDate and times:From 13 June to 07 December 2025 \n\n\n\nThe museum is open every day from 10.00am to 5.00pm \n\n\n\nLocation:Gallery 8

SUMMARY:Remembrances of War: Paul Joyce Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Remembrances of War \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Remembrances of War: Paul Joyce Exhibition\n\n\n\nThe Soldiers of Oxfordshire Museum presents Remembrances of War\, an evocative exhibition of paintings by artist Paul Joyce. \n\n\n\nBorn in 1940 under the shadow of the Second World War\, Joyce draws on personal childhood memories of bomb-scarred London as well as the wider cultural memory of a world devastated by conflict. \n\n\n\nBile of Beans\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe collection juxtaposes scenes of smouldering rubble in South London with imagined depictions of Hiroshima and the destruction across Europe. \n\n\n\nEveryday objects such as Bovril and baked beans appear alongside military aircraft and apocalyptic landscapes\, reflecting the absurd collision of the ordinary and the catastrophic during wartime. \n\n\n\nDown!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInfluenced by artists such as Paul Nash and Eric Ravilious\, Joyce’s works combine pastoral scenes with striking\, militarised elements. Devoid of human figures\, the paintings instead speak through objects\, buildings\, and machines—haunting reminders of the people whose lives were shaped by war. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition is enriched by artefacts from the museum’s collection\, offering further insight into how ordinary people endured and adapted to extraordinary times. Visitors of all ages are welcome\, with interactive features including a reconstructed 1940s bedroom and creative activities for children. \n\n\n\nBattle of Britain\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEntry to Remembrances of War also includes access to the museum’s wider galleries\, from immersive First and Second World War experiences to the temporary exhibition Life Lines\, which explores the liberation of Bergen-Belsen through community art projects centred on acts of kindness. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices (with Gift Aid): \n\n\n\n\nAdults – £8.00\n\n\n\nConcessions (Armed Forces\, Over 60s\, Students) – £7.00\n\n\n\nChildren (5-16) – £4.50\n\n\n\nFamily tickets and group offers also available.\n\n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nSaturday 13 September to Tuesday 18 November 2025 \n\n\n\nTuesday to Saturday from 11.00am to 5.00pm \n\n\n\nSunday from 2.00pm to 5.00pm \n\n\n\nGood to know: \n\n\n\nPhone and email for general enquiries & event tickets – 01993 810 211\, frontofhouse@sofo.org.uk

SUMMARY:Pat Suet-Bik Hui & the Three Perfections
DESCRIPTION:Pat Suet-Bik Hui & the Three Perfections\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Pat Suet-Bik Hui & the Three Perfections\n\n\n\nThis exhibition celebrates the work of Pat Suet-Bik Hui 許雪碧 (b. 1943)\, a US-based Hong Kong artist\, shown alongside others who explore the tradition of the ‘three perfections’ 三絕 – the harmonious blending of poetry\, calligraphy\, and painting. \n\n\n\nFeaturing works by Hui\, her contemporaries\, her teacher Lui Shou-Kwan\, and artists of his generation\, as well as earlier examples from the 17th to 19th centuries\, the exhibition offers a rich context for understanding Hui as both an innovator and a guardian of tradition. \n\n\n\nIn this artistic lineage\, calligraphic brushstrokes carry as much compositional weight as painted forms\, while poetry and imagery combine to create expressions neither can achieve alone. \n\n\n\nHui’s contemporary approach merges abstract and semi-abstract ink and colour washes with understated calligraphy\, inscribing poems that reflect on themes including love\, loss\, and the quiet joys of drinking. \n\n\n\nVisitors will find translations of many inscribed poems and guidance on interpreting the interplay of painting\, calligraphy\, and poetry within individual works. \n\n\n\nHui gifted her paintings to art historian Michael Sullivan\, whose collection was bequeathed to the Ashmolean Museum in 2013. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nPrice: \n\n\n\nFree \n\n\n\nLocation: \n\n\n\nGallery 11 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Painting with Poem by Xin Qiji\, Pat Suet-Bik Hui & Wucius Wong\, 1987\, ink & colour on paper © Ashmolean Museum\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Painting with poem by Paul Ka-Yin Kwok\, Pat Suet-Bik Hui & Paul Ka-Yin Kwok\, 1999\, ink colour on paper © Ashmolean Museum\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Painting with poem by Nara Singde\, Pat Suet-Bik Hui\, 1991\, ink & colour on paper © Ashmolean Museum

SUMMARY:The Camera Helps: A Definitive Retrospective of the Work of Paddy Summerfield
DESCRIPTION:The Camera Helps: A Definitive Retrospective of the Work of Paddy Summerfield\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Camera Helps: A Definitive Retrospective of the Work of Paddy Summerfield\n\n\n\nPaddy Summerfield (1947–2024) was a photographer who developed a new psychological vision of photography\, turning the camera on the innermost workings of the human mind and heart. \n\n\n\nDespite an ongoing battle with bipolar disorder\, leading the photographer to continue living with his parents in Oxford\, Summerfield rose to prominence in the 1980s. Later\, his five critically acclaimed publications depicted Summerfield’s most intense and enduring photographic obsessions: desire and alienation. \n\n\n\nThis substantial retrospective of the photographer’s work shows the stages of Summerfield’s creative evolution through comprehensive installations inspired by his five major publications as well as other significant bodies of work. \n\n\n\nHighlights on display include: \n\n\n\n\nThe Oxford Pictures 1968-78\, a series capturing students during the summer term at Oxford. Close in age but feeling like an outsider\, Summerfield found a shared sense of loneliness in his subjects. Though set beside rivers\, college lawns\, and Oxford streets\, the images evoke the insecurities of youth\, including longing\, isolation\, and sexual anxiety\, with solitary figures reflecting his own experience.\n\n\n\nTony Lights Up (2016)\, an unpublished short photo-essay and portrait of ‘Tony’\, a familiar figure at the time to local people\, living in sheltered accommodation. Summerfield accompanied Tony on his daily routine of asking for small change\, laughing at the world around him\, and betting on dogs – portraying his pleasure in the quiet satisfaction of lighting a cigarette.\n\n\n\nMother and Father (Dewi Lewis Publishing\, 2014)\, a moving and poignant journal of the final years of his parents’ sixty-year marriage. From 1997 to 2007\, Summerfield documented his mother’s worsening Alzheimer’s and his father’s unceasing dedication to caring for her.\n\n\n\n\nThe exhibition also offers a glimpse of both the physicality and mastery of Summerfield’s unique and idiosyncratic relationship with the craft of photographic print making. \n\n\n\nThis exhibition is part of Photo Oxford. \n\n\n\nA small display – Paddy Summerfield: Order out of chaos – will be open from the end of August until 30 November in Blackwall Hall. It previews Summerfield’s working process and serves as a forerunner to the full exhibition. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\n Free admission\, no ticket required \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nSaturday 11 October to Sunday 30 November 2025  \n\n\n\nMonday to Saturday from 10.00am to 5.00pmSunday from 11.00am to 4.00pm \n\n\n\nLocation: \n\n\n\nBlackwell Hall\, Weston Library
