DESCRIPTION:Ashmolean NOW: Daphne Wright – Deep-Rooted Things\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Ashmolean NOW: Daphne Wright – Deep-Rooted Things\n\n\n\nAshmolean NOW: Daphne Wright – Deep-Rooted Things is the fourth in the Ashmolean NOW exhibition series\, where contemporary artists are invited to create new work inspired by the Ashmolean’s historical collections. \n\n\n\nThe fourth instalment of the Ashmolean Now series focuses on sculptures by Irish artist Daphne Wright. \n\n\n\nConceived in partnership with the Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin\, the exhibition will feature several new works in plaster\, which consider the tradition of still lifes and respond to the sculptures in the Cast Gallery. \n\n\n\nDaphne Wright works in unfired clay and jesmonite and has long experimented with casting.  \n\n\n\nCentral to the exhibition will be Sons and Couch\, a life-size sculptural artwork cast in jesmonite of the artist’s sons. They have featured in their mother’s moving and personal work since an early age. Photograph by Julian Broad\, courtesy of TIN MAN ART\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout This Is What You Get\n\n\n\nSTANLEY DONWOOD | RADIOHEAD | THOM YORKE \n\n\n\nThis major exhibition will explore the visual art of Stanley Donwood and Thom Yorke and the iconic images of Radiohead. \n\n\n\nMore than 180 objects will be on display from the artists’ 30-year collaboration\, including original paintings for album covers\, digital compositions\, etchings\, unpublished drawings\, and lyrics in their sketchbooks. \n\n\n\nThis Is What You Get will reveal how the artists experimented with early technology\, and explore the evolution of the images for Radiohead’s legendary albums and Yorke’s later projects. To date the band\, which was formed in Oxfordshire in the mid-1980s\, has sold 30 million records worldwide. \n\n\n\nDeveloped and curated with Stanley Donwood and Thom Yorke\, the show will offer a unique opportunity to look at the creative forces behind some of the most important and influential music of the past few decades. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nPrices:Prices £8.10 to £16.20 \n\n\n\nTimed tickets are in operation. DESCRIPTION:Remembrances of War \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Remembrances of War: Paul Joyce Exhibition\n\n\n\nThe Soldiers of Oxfordshire Museum presents Remembrances of War\, an evocative exhibition of paintings by artist Paul Joyce.  \n\n\n\nBorn in 1940 under the shadow of the Second World War\, Joyce draws on personal childhood memories of bomb-scarred London as well as the wider cultural memory of a world devastated by conflict. \n\n\n\nBile of Beans\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe collection juxtaposes scenes of smouldering rubble in South London with imagined depictions of Hiroshima and the destruction across Europe.  \n\n\n\nEveryday objects such as Bovril and baked beans appear alongside military aircraft and apocalyptic landscapes\, reflecting the absurd collision of the ordinary and the catastrophic during wartime. \n\n\n\nDown!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInfluenced by artists such as Paul Nash and Eric Ravilious\, Joyce’s works combine pastoral scenes with striking\, militarised elements. Devoid of human figures\, the paintings instead speak through objects\, buildings\, and machines—haunting reminders of the people whose lives were shaped by war. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition is enriched by artefacts from the museum’s collection\, offering further insight into how ordinary people endured and adapted to extraordinary times. DESCRIPTION:The Camera Helps: A Definitive Retrospective of the Work of Paddy Summerfield\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Camera Helps: A Definitive Retrospective of the Work of Paddy Summerfield\n\n\n\nPaddy Summerfield (1947–2024) was a photographer who developed a new psychological vision of photography\, turning the camera on the innermost workings of the human mind and heart. \n\n\n\nDespite an ongoing battle with bipolar disorder\, leading the photographer to continue living with his parents in Oxford\, Summerfield rose to prominence in the 1980s. Later\, his five critically acclaimed publications depicted Summerfield’s most intense and enduring photographic obsessions: desire and alienation. \n\n\n\nThis substantial retrospective of the photographer’s work shows the stages of Summerfield’s creative evolution through comprehensive installations inspired by his five major publications as well as other significant bodies of work. \n\n\n\nHighlights on display include: \n\n\n\n\nThe Oxford Pictures 1968-78\, a series capturing students during the summer term at Oxford. Close in age but feeling like an outsider\, Summerfield found a shared sense of loneliness in his subjects. Though set beside rivers\, college lawns\, and Oxford streets\, the images evoke the insecurities of youth\, including longing\, isolation\, and sexual anxiety\, with solitary figures reflecting his own experience.\n\n\n\nTony Lights Up (2016)\, an unpublished short photo-essay and portrait of ‘Tony’\, a familiar figure at the time to local people\, living in sheltered accommodation. Summerfield accompanied Tony on his daily routine of asking for small change\, laughing at the world around him\, and betting on dogs – portraying his pleasure in the quiet satisfaction of lighting a cigarette.\n\n\n\nMother and Father (Dewi Lewis Publishing\, 2014)\, a moving and poignant journal of the final years of his parents’ sixty-year marriage. From 1997 to 2007\, Summerfield documented his mother’s worsening Alzheimer’s and his father’s unceasing dedication to caring for her.\n\n\n\n\nThe exhibition also offers a glimpse of both the physicality and mastery of Summerfield’s unique and idiosyncratic relationship with the craft of photographic print making. \n\n\n\nThis exhibition is part of Photo Oxford. \n\n\n\nA small display – Paddy Summerfield: Order out of chaos – will be open from the end of August until 30 November in Blackwall Hall. The first theatre was built in 1836\, and a second in 1886. In 1934\, the third New Theatre opened. \n\n\n\nThe theatre has been owned by several different companies and undergone several name changes. It is now owned by the Ambassador Theatre Group and hosts everything from ballet and opera to musicals. \n\n\n\nOn performance days\, the Box Office opens at noon and closes 15 minutes after the show starts. If there is a performance on a Sunday or Bank Holiday\, Box Office will open 2 hours before the show begins and close 15 minutes after the show starts. \n\n\n\nThere is a large air-conditioned bar with seating located below the Stalls Foyer\, two further bars in the Circle Foyer and an additional one at the back of the balcony.
