DESCRIPTION:Ashmolean NOW: Daphne Wright – Deep-Rooted Things\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Ashmolean NOW: Daphne Wright – Deep-Rooted Things\n\n\n\nAshmolean NOW: Daphne Wright – Deep-Rooted Things is the fourth in the Ashmolean NOW exhibition series\, where contemporary artists are invited to create new work inspired by the Ashmolean’s historical collections. \n\n\n\nThe fourth instalment of the Ashmolean Now series focuses on sculptures by Irish artist Daphne Wright. \n\n\n\nConceived in partnership with the Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin\, the exhibition will feature several new works in plaster\, which consider the tradition of still lifes and respond to the sculptures in the Cast Gallery. \n\n\n\nDaphne Wright works in unfired clay and jesmonite and has long experimented with casting.  \n\n\n\nCentral to the exhibition will be Sons and Couch\, a life-size sculptural artwork cast in jesmonite of the artist’s sons. They have featured in their mother’s moving and personal work since an early age. Photograph by Julian Broad\, courtesy of TIN MAN ART\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout This Is What You Get\n\n\n\nSTANLEY DONWOOD | RADIOHEAD | THOM YORKE \n\n\n\nThis major exhibition will explore the visual art of Stanley Donwood and Thom Yorke and the iconic images of Radiohead. \n\n\n\nMore than 180 objects will be on display from the artists’ 30-year collaboration\, including original paintings for album covers\, digital compositions\, etchings\, unpublished drawings\, and lyrics in their sketchbooks. \n\n\n\nThis Is What You Get will reveal how the artists experimented with early technology\, and explore the evolution of the images for Radiohead’s legendary albums and Yorke’s later projects. To date the band\, which was formed in Oxfordshire in the mid-1980s\, has sold 30 million records worldwide. \n\n\n\nDeveloped and curated with Stanley Donwood and Thom Yorke\, the show will offer a unique opportunity to look at the creative forces behind some of the most important and influential music of the past few decades. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nPrices:Prices £8.10 to £16.20 \n\n\n\nTimed tickets are in operation. DESCRIPTION:The Camera Helps: A Definitive Retrospective of the Work of Paddy Summerfield\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Camera Helps: A Definitive Retrospective of the Work of Paddy Summerfield\n\n\n\nPaddy Summerfield (1947–2024) was a photographer who developed a new psychological vision of photography\, turning the camera on the innermost workings of the human mind and heart. \n\n\n\nDespite an ongoing battle with bipolar disorder\, leading the photographer to continue living with his parents in Oxford\, Summerfield rose to prominence in the 1980s. Later\, his five critically acclaimed publications depicted Summerfield’s most intense and enduring photographic obsessions: desire and alienation. \n\n\n\nThis substantial retrospective of the photographer’s work shows the stages of Summerfield’s creative evolution through comprehensive installations inspired by his five major publications as well as other significant bodies of work. \n\n\n\nHighlights on display include: \n\n\n\n\nThe Oxford Pictures 1968-78\, a series capturing students during the summer term at Oxford. Close in age but feeling like an outsider\, Summerfield found a shared sense of loneliness in his subjects. Though set beside rivers\, college lawns\, and Oxford streets\, the images evoke the insecurities of youth\, including longing\, isolation\, and sexual anxiety\, with solitary figures reflecting his own experience.\n\n\n\nTony Lights Up (2016)\, an unpublished short photo-essay and portrait of ‘Tony’\, a familiar figure at the time to local people\, living in sheltered accommodation. Summerfield accompanied Tony on his daily routine of asking for small change\, laughing at the world around him\, and betting on dogs – portraying his pleasure in the quiet satisfaction of lighting a cigarette.\n\n\n\nMother and Father (Dewi Lewis Publishing\, 2014)\, a moving and poignant journal of the final years of his parents’ sixty-year marriage. From 1997 to 2007\, Summerfield documented his mother’s worsening Alzheimer’s and his father’s unceasing dedication to caring for her.\n\n\n\n\nThe exhibition also offers a glimpse of both the physicality and mastery of Summerfield’s unique and idiosyncratic relationship with the craft of photographic print making. \n\n\n\nThis exhibition is part of Photo Oxford. \n\n\n\nA small display – Paddy Summerfield: Order out of chaos – will be open from the end of August until 30 November in Blackwall Hall. Dr. Tinselstein — festive inventor and old friend of Santa — was just popping by for a catch-up when his Christmas Time Machine malfunctioned in the snow! DESCRIPTION:Aphasia Support Group in Oxford – Volunteers & Promotion – Peer Leader Anna Zvegintzov\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Aphasia Support Group in Oxford – Volunteers & Promotion\n\n\n\nA welcoming social drop-in for adults with aphasia (or other acquired communication disabilities) to meet others\, build confidence and reduce isolation. Groups are run by people with aphasia\, for people with aphasia. \n\n\n\nThe Say Aphasia charity provides support groups across the UK for people with aphasia; a language and communication disability caused by a brain injury like a stroke. Aphasia affects over 350\,000 people in the UK but is little understood or known about by the public.  \n\n\n\nIt is the only aphasia charity set up by people with aphasia for people with aphasia; helping them to adapt to their new way of life and regain their independence and confidence. \n\n\n\nAphasia occurs due to injury to the brain such as a stroke. It affects access to language\, resulting in difficulties following conversations\, speaking\, reading and writing. \n\n\n\nGroup Purpose \n\n\n\n\nTo bring people with aphasia or other acquired communication disability together.\n\n\n\nTo help people with aphasia to feel less isolated within their community\, and feel more confident living with aphasia.\n\n\n\nTo provide a safe place where aphasia is understood.\n\n\n\nTo provide a supportive place for people with aphasia to have conversations and socialise.\n\n\n\n\nVolunteers Needed \n\n\n\nThere is a need for friendly volunteers who can: \n\n\n\n\nWelcome attendees\n\n\n\nfacilitate conversation\n\n\n\nHelp with refreshments\n\n\n\nAssist with simple admin or setting up the room\n\n\n\n\nNo experience is required — full guidance is provided\, and volunteers usually help once or twice a month. DESCRIPTION:Oral History skills training workshop\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Oral History skills training workshop\n\n\n\nThis seminar is one of a new six-part event series taking place this autumn\, hosted by Oxford University’s Community History Hub. The events will showcase a range of innovative local historical projects run by\, or in partnership with\, community historians. \n\n\n\nParticipants will learn about the latest new research being conducted on Oxfordshire’s diverse histories\, as well as gain new skills that could help shape personal project ideas. \n\n\n\nOn 21 November\, participants are invited to a workshop offering guidance on conducting oral history interviews and planning their own research projects. The session will cover key topics such as project planning\, research ethics\, and interview techniques\, and is open to both beginners and experienced researchers. \n\n\n\nThe session will be led by two Oxford academics who have extensive experience in researching sensitive historical themes using oral history research methods: \n\n\n\n\nDr Sally Frampton has been working with a range of community mental health organisations (including Restore\, Oxfordshire Recovery College\, and My Life\, My Choice) to develop a long view of the changing nature of mental health treatment across the county. Her team has developed a number of free resources based on their research\, including an oral history archive and teaching resources for schools\, which you can find online via the Oxford Health Histories website.\n\n\n\nDr Suzan Meryem Kalayci thinks and writes about silence in history\, with a particular focus on the events of the Armenian Genocide\, for which she has won several awards. She explores the notions of memory and affect within her work on oral and cultural history.\n\n\n\n\nThe event is free and everyone is welcome\, but please note that the number of spaces available is limited\, so do book in advance.
