SUMMARY:Images of Authority: Portraits Between Iran and Europe
DESCRIPTION:Images of Authority: Portraits Between Iran and Europe\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Images of Authority: Portraits Between Iran and Europe\n\n\n\nThis free exhibition examines the power of portraits in shaping the image of three contemporaneous rulers: Fath Ali Shah Qajar (1797–1834)\, King George III (1760–1820)\, and Napoleon Bonaparte (1799–1814)\, offering a fascinating reflection on the role of imagery in both personal and political life. \n\n\n\nJuxtaposing works on different media from Iran\, Britain\, and France\, the display reveals the strategies these leaders and their image-makers used to convey authority\, ambition\, and personality. \n\n\n\nFor the first time in over a century\, the exhibition also presents two recently restored Qajar paintings\, alongside insights from their conservation discoveries. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking informatio\n\n\n\nPrices: \n\n\n\nFree \n\n\n\nLocation: \n\n\n\nGallery 29 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSelected artworks on display\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Seated Portrait of Fath Ali Shah of Iran retouched & conserved\, about 1798\, oil on canvas © Ashmolean Museum\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Portrait of a setar player\, 1797–1798. SUMMARY:Pat Suet-Bik Hui & the Three Perfections
DESCRIPTION:Pat Suet-Bik Hui & the Three Perfections\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Pat Suet-Bik Hui & the Three Perfections\n\n\n\nThis exhibition celebrates the work of Pat Suet-Bik Hui 許雪碧 (b. 1943)\, a US-based Hong Kong artist\, shown alongside others who explore the tradition of the ‘three perfections’ 三絕 – the harmonious blending of poetry\, calligraphy\, and painting. \n\n\n\nFeaturing works by Hui\, her contemporaries\, her teacher Lui Shou-Kwan\, and artists of his generation\, as well as earlier examples from the 17th to 19th centuries\, the exhibition offers a rich context for understanding Hui as both an innovator and a guardian of tradition. \n\n\n\nIn this artistic lineage\, calligraphic brushstrokes carry as much compositional weight as painted forms\, while poetry and imagery combine to create expressions neither can achieve alone. \n\n\n\nHui’s contemporary approach merges abstract and semi-abstract ink and colour washes with understated calligraphy\, inscribing poems that reflect on themes including love\, loss\, and the quiet joys of drinking. \n\n\n\nVisitors will find translations of many inscribed poems and guidance on interpreting the interplay of painting\, calligraphy\, and poetry within individual works. \n\n\n\nHui gifted her paintings to art historian Michael Sullivan\, whose collection was bequeathed to the Ashmolean Museum in 2013. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nPrice: \n\n\n\nFree \n\n\n\nLocation: \n\n\n\nGallery 11 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Painting with Poem by Xin Qiji\, Pat Suet-Bik Hui & Wucius Wong\, 1987\, ink & colour on paper © Ashmolean Museum\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Painting with poem by Paul Ka-Yin Kwok\, Pat Suet-Bik Hui & Paul Ka-Yin Kwok\, 1999\, ink colour on paper © Ashmolean Museum\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Painting with poem by Nara Singde\, Pat Suet-Bik Hui\, 1991\, ink & colour on paper © Ashmolean Museum

SUMMARY:Peter Rhoades & Emma Baldwin: Hand to Eye
DESCRIPTION:Peter Rhoades & Emma Baldwin: Hand to Eye\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Peter Rhoades & Emma Baldwin: Hand to Eye\n\n\n\nPeter Rhoades’s works in this exhibition date from the 1970s and 80s\, a time of both personal and historical change and tension. Only a few of these paintings and drawings have been shown before. \n\n\n\nPeter returned to making images direct from visual observation\, having spent the 1960s primarily involved with various kinds of abstraction. In doing so\, he was reviving his Ruskinian roots initially nurtured by his father and Percy Horton at the Ruskin School of Art. \n\n\n\nThe drawings and a few of the paintings also represent his ongoing concern with European figure composition. \n\n\n\nPeter is an artist and teacher/lecturer working in painting\, drawing and printmaking. Much of his teaching career has been at Oxford University as both a tutor at the Ruskin School of Art and Christ Church College. \n\n\n\nPeter was also a lecturer at Abingdon & Witney College\, working for many years on the prestigious Foundation Visual Arts course with his co-exhibitor Emma Baldwin. \n\n\n\nEmma Baldwin is a potter who\, after thirty years at Abingdon and Witney College\, is making wheel-thrown vessels full-time. Emma enjoys making both functional and sculptural forms inspired by both contemporary and historical sources. \n\n\n\nShe is primarily drawn to ceramics as an object\, fascinated by the line between what makes something functional or a work of art. Emma finds the entire process of transforming Earth into an object of beauty completely engrossing. \n\n\n\nEmma was first introduced to clay at school\, aged 14\, and has been working with it on and off ever since. Emma studied ceramics at Bristol Polytechnic in 1992\, where she had the privilege to be taught by both Walter Keeler and Mo Jupp – two truly inspiring potters. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFree entry \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nWednesday 21 January to Saturday 07 February 2026 \n\n\n\nMonday to Saturday from 10.00am to 4.00pm \n\n\n\nClosed on Sunday and Bank Holiday \n\n\n\nRunning time: \n\n\n\n1 hour\, without an interval \n\n\n\nGood to know: \n\n\n\nExhibition Opening on Thursday 22 January from 6.00pm to 8.00pm \n\n\n\nPlease join for drinks to celebrate the opening of this exhibition \n\n\n\nFree event. SUMMARY:Fresh Perceptions on Reality Conference
DESCRIPTION:Fresh Perceptions on Reality Conference\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Fresh Perceptions on Reality Conference\n\n\n\n“Until recently\, believing in God seemed incompatible with science. Now\, unexpectedly\, science appears to have become God’s ally.” From the Introduction of God\, The Science\, The Evidence \n\n\n\nFresh Perceptions on Reality is a half-day conference coming to Oxford on Friday 23 January 2026\, running from 2.00pm to 6.00pm at Wolfson College. \n\n\n\nFree and open to the public\, the afternoon event brings together leading scientific and intellectual voices to explore some of humanity’s most enduring questions in the light of modern discoveries. \n\n\n\nThe conference features a distinguished line-up of speakers\, including Sir Roger Penrose\, Andrew Briggs and John C. Lennox\, alongside Michel-Yves Bolloré and Olivier Bonnassies\, authors of the international bestseller God\, The Science\, The Evidence. \n\n\n\nThe book has sold more than 400\,000 copies worldwide and has attracted widespread attention in the UK\, with coverage across The Sunday Times\, The Daily Telegraph\, The London Standard\, BBC Radio 4’s Today programme and BBC News. \n\n\n\nAcross the afternoon\, speakers will examine questions that sit at the heart of both science and philosophy: Where does the universe come from? Are we here by chance? And what do recent advances in quantum physics\, cosmology and artificial intelligence mean for how we understand reality itself? \n\n\n\nOnce seen as incompatible\, science and belief are increasingly being revisited together as new evidence reshapes long-held assumptions. \n\n\n\nDrawing on insights from physics\, cosmology and beyond\, the discussions reflect a growing reassessment of the relationship between scientific discovery and belief\, sometimes described as a “great reversal”. Ideas emerging from relativity\, quantum mechanics\, the Big Bang and the fine-tuning of the universe have reopened debates that many believed were long settled. \n\n\n\nGod\, The Science\, The Evidence distils research and perspectives from more than 100 leading scientists\, including insights linked to 62 Nobel Prize winners\, and extends the conversation beyond science alone to philosophy\, morality and history. \n\n\n\nPraised for being both rigorous and accessible\, the book invites readers – and now conference audiences – to reconsider how science shapes our understanding of existence and whether reality points beyond itself. \n\n\n\nFresh Perceptions on Reality offers an opportunity for Oxford audiences to engage with these ideas firsthand\, in an open and thought-provoking forum that encourages curiosity\, debate and a deeper exploration of one of humanity’s most profound questions. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReviews\n\n\n\n\n“A very welcome\, interesting and easy to read book which argues convincingly that the existence of a creator God\, far from being negated by the scientific understanding of the Universe\, is rationally supported by it. This is a remarkable work with hundreds of references citing leading contemporary scientists.” \n\n\n\nJohn C. Lennox\, Emeritus Professor of Mathematics\, University of Oxford\, author of Can Science Explain Everything? \n\n\n\n\n\n“This book is a very good presentation of the development of the Big Bang theory and its impact on our beliefs and our representation of the world…As the Big Bang theory suggests\, if the Universe had a beginning\, then we cannot avoid the question of creation.” \n\n\n\nRobert Wilson\, Winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics for his discovery of Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation \n\n\n\n\n\n“The book highlights in a remarkable and rigorous manner how the latest scientific advances point towards a creator God. Wonderfully documented\, it also introduces many renowned scientists who advocated for a dynamic harmony and osmosis between their discoveries and the idea of a creator at the origin of all things.” \n\n\n\nStephanie Reader\, Evangelical and specialist in the field of programmed cell death\, author of Is it Possible? When Science and Faith Meet \n\n\n\n\n\n“The amazing advances in science and cosmology over the past century raise fundamental questions about our existence…Michel-Yves Bolloré and Olivier Bonnassies explore these questions in a highly readable way\, and give a personal account of how their answers lead them to a warranted belief in God.” \n\n\n\nAndrew Briggs\, Professor of Physics\, University of Oxford\, author of The Penultimate Curiosity \n\n\n\n\n\n“This book thus provides a strong\, rational argument for the reality of a creator God that is very comforting to those with a scientific mindset. Highly recommended!” \n\n\n\nEben Alexander\, MD\, author of Proof of Heaven \n\n\n\n\n\n“This book represents an innovation. It demonstrates that it is no longer ‘credible’ to pit science against faith…[The book] widens our field of reasoning and is an invitation to wonder.” \n\n\n\nCardinal Robert Sarah\, Prefect Emeritus of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFree event \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nFriday 23 January 2026 at 2.00pm \n\n\n\nRunning time: \n\n\n\n4 hours
