DESCRIPTION:Peter Rhoades & Emma Baldwin: Hand to Eye\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Peter Rhoades & Emma Baldwin: Hand to Eye\n\n\n\nPeter Rhoades’s works in this exhibition date from the 1970s and 80s\, a time of both personal and historical change and tension. Only a few of these paintings and drawings have been shown before.  \n\n\n\nPeter returned to making images direct from visual observation\, having spent the 1960s primarily involved with various kinds of abstraction. In doing so\, he was reviving his Ruskinian roots initially nurtured by his father and Percy Horton at the Ruskin School of Art.  \n\n\n\nThe drawings and a few of the paintings also represent his ongoing concern with European figure composition. \n\n\n\nPeter is an artist and teacher/lecturer working in painting\, drawing and printmaking. Much of his teaching career has been at Oxford University as both a tutor at the Ruskin School of Art and Christ Church College.  \n\n\n\nPeter was also a lecturer at Abingdon & Witney College\, working for many years on the prestigious Foundation Visual Arts course with his co-exhibitor Emma Baldwin. \n\n\n\nEmma Baldwin is a potter who\, after thirty years at Abingdon and Witney College\, is making wheel-thrown vessels full-time. Emma enjoys making both functional and sculptural forms inspired by both contemporary and historical sources.  \n\n\n\nShe is primarily drawn to ceramics as an object\, fascinated by the line between what makes something functional or a work of art. Emma finds the entire process of transforming Earth into an object of beauty completely engrossing. \n\n\n\nEmma was first introduced to clay at school\, aged 14\, and has been working with it on and off ever since. The market aims to provide the community with locally-produced great tasting food. \n\n\n\nThe Sunday market serves the community and visitors by providing fresh\, affordable and ethically sourced food as well as a place to meet\, eat and socialise with friends and neighbours. It also provides a free marketplace for local producers and crafts people. \n\n\n\nRegular stallholders bring fresh fruit and veg\, locally reared meat\, sustainably sourced fish\, artisan bread\, cheese and milk. Other traders produce fantastic cakes\, jams\, chutneys\, pasta\, chocolates and even plants and soaps. \n\n\n\nThe market has an amazing range of freshly made dishes from diverse food regions – Japanese\, Middle-Eastern\, Asian\, and the Mediterranean. There’s also a cafe that serves coffee\, tea\, cakes\, and a ‘Full Wolvercote’ breakfast. \n\n\n\nThe market is open every Sunday from 10.00am to noon at The White Hart Community Pub in Godstow Road\, Lower Wolvercote. \n\n\n\nThere is a Repair Café and bike clinic on the 2nd Sunday of each monthBring along your broken small electrical item\, and a trained volunteer will try to fix it for you and save it from the landfill. The first theatre was built in 1836\, and a second in 1886. In 1934\, the third New Theatre opened. \n\n\n\nThe theatre has been owned by several different companies and undergone several name changes. It is now owned by the Ambassador Theatre Group and hosts everything from ballet and opera to musicals. \n\n\n\nOn performance days\, the Box Office opens at noon and closes 15 minutes after the show starts. If there is a performance on a Sunday or Bank Holiday\, Box Office will open 2 hours before the show begins and close 15 minutes after the show starts. \n\n\n\nThere is a large air-conditioned bar with seating located below the Stalls Foyer\, two further bars in the Circle Foyer and an additional one at the back of the balcony. All stocked with an array of drinks and snacks. \n\n\n\nThere is a cloakroom located in the stalls bar. If this is closed\, please speak to a member of staff. £1 per item. Bach \n\n\n\nToccata in D major\, BWV912 \n\n\n\nFrench Suite no.5 in G major\, BWV816 \n\n\n\nChromatic Fantasia and Fugue in d minor\, BWV903 \n\n\n\nInterval \n\n\n\nPartita no.5 in G major\, BWV829 \n\n\n\nItalian Concerto in F major\, BWV971 \n\n\n\nPrelude and Fugue in A minor\, BWV894 \n\n\n\nAs a child\, Angela Hewitt listened to her organist father play Bach in Ottawa Cathedral; her career was launched in 1985 when she won first prize at the Toronto International Bach Competition; in 2022\, she completed her Bach Odyssey\, a project to perform all J.S. Bach’s keyboard works in major venues around the world. It is a treat to have her present a complete J.S. Bach concert for us. \n\n\n\nThe programme starts with Bach in his twenties\, composing improvisatory toccatas at the court in Weimar. Next\, we catch him in Köthen\, aged thirty and writing the French suites as teaching aids. Then on to Leipzig\, where\, at fifty\, he brilliantly reimagines an Italian Concerto for the keyboard. \n\n\n\nAt this point\, chronology is thrown to the wind. Prelude and Fugue in A minor is the work of a fiery young Bach\, eager to show off his virtuosity as a performer.
