DESCRIPTION:Pets & their People\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Pets & their People\n\n\n\nWe have been domesticating animals for over ten thousand years. But why do we want tame wolves in our homes or wild cats on our laps? \n\n\n\nThis exhibition explores the relationship between humans and their pets – or pets and their humans. \n\n\n\nPets & their People draws on depictions of pets in stories\, imagery and poetry in the Bodleian’s collection – from one of the earliest recorded depictions of an assistance dog for the blind to a rare copy of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland that has never been displayed in the UK before.  \n\n\n\nThe exhibition asks how the special bond between owners and their pets has evolved over time\, and what that evolution tells us about who we really are. \n\n\n\nAre we taming our pets\, or are they bringing us back to our wild roots? \n\n\n\nExhibition book \n\n\n\nPets & their People \n\n\n\nBy Charles Foster \n\n\n\n\n			\n				\n			\n		Exhibition book – Pets & their People\n\n\n\nBestselling author Charles Foster provides an extraordinary mix of psychology\, science and cultural history as he explores the fascinating relationship between humans and their pets. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n			\n				\n			\n		\n\n\n\n\n\n\n			\n				\n			\n		\n\n\n\n\n\n\n			\n				\n			\n		\n\n\n\n\n\n\n			\n				\n			\n		\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThese wonderful images are actually postcards\, collected by the artist Tom Phillips (1937–2022) and part of the archive donated to the Bodleian Libraries. \n\n\n\nDating from the c1890s – 1960s\, they capture different relationships between people and the animals around them. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCall for submissions \n\n\n\nAs part of the exhibition\, the Bodleian Libraries are inviting members of the public to contribute to a contemporary record of people and their pets. SUMMARY:Foraging Connections
DESCRIPTION:Foraging Connections\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Foraging Connections\n\n\n\nForaging Connections is a collaborative exhibition blending art\, science\, nature and community. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition displays a collection of work created using foraged plants\, transformed through ancient techniques such as cordage and weaving\, to reflect the raw beauty and cyclical nature of the natural world\, that is both ephemeral and enduring. \n\n\n\nSince spring 2025\, artists Lilli Tranborg and Arbie Edward have been working with children from local charity\, Children Heard And Seen\, at both Modern Art Oxford and Wytham Woods.  \n\n\n\nExploring the theme of connectedness\, to both each other and nature\, the workshops have encouraged a tactile engagement with natural materials in the spirit of innovation\, inclusion and growth\, and with a focus on the importance of trees and forests.  \n\n\n\nDuring these workshops\, a sculpture in Wytham Woods has been repurposed\, to reflect on themes of refuge and repair\, and will forge a connection between the woods and the gallery space at Modern Art Oxford. \n\n\n\nThe workshops delivered in the run up to this exhibition were a partnership with IF Oxford and Oxford North\, and formed part of Oxford North’s Engage Programme. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Modern Art Oxford\n\n\n\n\n			\n				\n			\n		\n\n\n\nModern Art Oxford  is one of the UK’s leading contemporary art spaces. SUMMARY:Anna Ridler: A Perfect Language of Images
DESCRIPTION:Anna Ridler: A Perfect Language of Images\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Anna Ridler: A Perfect Language of Images\n\n\n\nAnna Ridler is an artist whose work explores the creative and societal possibilities of artificial intelligence\, often through self-built datasets that question how knowledge is constructed\, classified\, and shared. \n\n\n\nAn Oxford University alumna\, her work has been exhibited internationally at institutions including the V&A and the Centre Pompidou\, and she has been recognised by Ars Electronica and Artnet as one of nine pioneering artists working with AI. \n\n\n\nThe digital artwork\, created in collaboration with Dr William Poole from the Faculty of English at the University of Oxford\, brings together three pieces by Ridler under the title A Perfect Language of Images. \n\n\n\nIt is inspired by Oxford scholar John Wilkins’ 1668 attempt to classify the world through a universal philosophical language\, and Jorge Luis Borges’ later critique of such systems as inherently incomplete and unstable. \n\n\n\nDrawing these ideas into conversation with contemporary machine learning\, the work reflects on how generative systems inherit the same ambition towards totalising order\, while continually revealing its limits. \n\n\n\nIn doing so\, Ridler’s installation exposes the tension between classification and complexity\, highlighting what can be approximated\, what resists categorisation\, and what ultimately escapes representation. \n\n\n\n\n\nWork 1:+\n\n\n\n\nA Catalogue of Exceptions shows some of the things that strain or fail to fit within Wilkins’ taxonomy. Throughout the system there are acknowledged difficulties; organisms that are “imperfect”\, “strange originals” and things suspended in “betwixt” categories: coral that is neither mineral nor plant\, fungi that “seem to want” essential parts\, zoophytes suspended between kingdoms. \n\n\n\nCreated using roughly a decade of different generative systems (2016–2025)\, each with its own unique aesthetic\, and trained on imagery drawn from Wilkins’ own descriptions\, it becomes almost a cabinet of curiosities\, even as the logic that links each image remains unstable or not immediately legible. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWork 2:+\n\n\n\n\nBetween Things displays Wilkins’ phrases as evidence of classification under pressure—instances where his system hesitates\, hedges\, and cannot decide. Photo credit: Lewis Ronald\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Kira Freije: Unspeak the Chorus\n\n\n\nWalk amongst Kira Freije’s life-sized figures within an atmospheric and emotionally charged space\, where groupings suggest fragments of larger imagined narratives. \n\n\n\nModern Art Oxford presents Unspeak the Chorus\, the Turner Prize nominated solo exhibition by British artist Kira Freije (b.1985\, lives and works in London)\, featuring a new body of work co-commissioned by Modern Art Oxford and The Hepworth Wakefield. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition is Freije’s first major solo presentation in the UK\, bringing together around twenty hand-welded\, life-size metal figures\, with the artist expanding her practice through the inclusion of animals and textiles. The resulting work transforms the Upper Gallery into an immersive and emotionally charged environment in which human and animal worlds meet. \n\n\n\nFreije’s hand-welded metal figures\, arranged in intimate groupings\, suggest fragments of a story without ever resolving into a fixed narrative. United by a palpable sense of kinship\, the figures appear at once connected and self-contained – celebrating\, loving\, grieving\, guiding\, resting\, reaching and exhaling. While subtle interactions unfold between the sculptures\, Freije deliberately leaves the scene open\, inviting viewers to bring their own interpretations and emotional responses to the work. \n\n\n\nTo create her life-size sculptures\, Freije casts her own hands and feet in aluminium before constructing each figure from the ground up. Welding strips of steel together in a process akin to drawing an outline in space\, she builds skeletal forms that are at once delicate and robust. Image: Olivia Plender\, title TBC\, 2026\, Embroidered textile © Olivia Plender\, courtesy Maureen Paley\, London\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Olivia Plender: Little Fennel’s Complaint\n\n\n\nDiscover the hidden history of women’s bodies\, medicine and resistance through Olivia Plender’s major new solo exhibition. \n\n\n\nModern Art Oxford is delighted to present Little Fennel’s Complaint\, a major solo exhibition by Olivia Plender (b. 1977\, London)\, exploring historic and ongoing inequalities in women’s healthcare\, from early modern witchcraft to contemporary debates on reproductive rights and medical authority. \n\n\n\nPlender developed the exhibition through research with leading Oxford institutions\, including the Bodleian Library\, Oxford Botanic Garden and John Radcliffe Hospital. Across embroidered textiles\, watercolours\, drawings\, mobiles\, and sound works\, she examines how women’s healthcare has been recorded\, classified\, and practised over time. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition combines new commissions\, existing works\, and historic manuscripts to highlight Plender’s multidisciplinary\, research-led practice. Installations trace shifting approaches to medicine and diagnosis\, opening with a presentation inspired by contemporary hospital architectures and waiting rooms. This builds on Plender’s ongoing project Our Bodies are Not the Problem (2021–)\, developed with the Glasgow Women’s Library\, exploring the links between ill health\, disability and structural inequalities. \n\n\n\nHistorical perspectives include Plender’s series Bringing Down the Flowers (2023–)\, watercolours in the style of genteel 19th-century flower paintings of plants historically used to induce abortion\, referencing orally transmitted reproductive knowledge. Three 17th-century manuscripts by astrologer-physician Richard Napier\, on loan from the Bodleian Library\, document consultations with women about their reproductive health\, alongside other ‘women’s problems’ such as ‘green sickness’\, a diagnosis formerly given only to unmarried women. \n\n\n\nDisplayed alongside these is Plender’s hanging mobile (2024) reflecting on humoral medicine (based on the ancient theory of the humours) and other systems of classification from the Renaissance to today. SUMMARY:The Summer Eights 2026
DESCRIPTION:The Summer Eights\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Summer Eights\n\n\n\nOxford’s iconic bumps regatta \n\n\n\nThe Summer Eights is one of two bumping boat races in Oxford’s rowing calendar\, alongside the Torpids. The regatta takes place each May over four successive days\, from Wednesday to Saturday of the fifth week of Trinity Term\, drawing spectators and rowing enthusiasts from across the city and beyond. \n\n\n\nRacing on the Isis \n\n\n\nThe races are held on the Isis\, a stretch of the River Thames in Oxford. The river is generally too narrow for side-by-side racing\, so crews compete in the traditional ‘Bumps’ format. In this style of racing\, boats chase each other in single file\, aiming to catch and ‘bump’ the crew ahead to move up the rankings. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor each division\, twelve boats line up at the downstream end near Donnington Bridge\, with each cox holding onto a rope attached to the bank\, leaving roughly 1.5 lengths between boats. Racing begins with a series of cannon signals: a five-minute gun\, a one-minute gun\, and the starting gun. \n\n\n\nWhen a bump occurs\, both crews involved stop racing and move aside to allow the rest of the division to pass. The ultimate aim is to become Head of the River and retain the top position. It is also possible to over-bump\, where a boat overtakes the one ahead if the two crews in front have already bumped\, swapping places for the following day or next year. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpectator experience \n\n\n\nExpect the banks of the Isis to be packed with spectators\, enjoying the excitement as oars slice through the serene waters. The atmosphere combines tradition\, competition\, and community\, making Summer Eights one of Oxford’s most cherished sporting events. \n\n\n\nThe regatta is organised by Oxford University Rowing Clubs\, the confederation overseeing all college crews and inter-collegiate contests within the University of Oxford. This includes the Oxford University Boat Club (OUBC)\, Oxford University Women’s Boat Club (OUWBC)\, the Oxford University Lightweight Rowing Club (OULRC)\, and the Oxford University Women’s Lightweight Rowing Club (OUWLRC).

This insightful 90-minute walk will bring the artistic spirit of mid-19th century Oxford to life\, taking you to the key locations in Oxford associated with the movement and its artists\, and with particular reference to Oxford-inspired paintings. \n\n\n\nYou’ll see where Jane Burden\, embroiderer and muse\, once lived at ‘Hell’s Passage’\, the Oxford Union\, home to Pre-Raphaelite murals and a noteworthy debacle involving Dante Gabriel Rossetti\, Magdalen College Tower and the story of a particular May Morning\, plus more locations significant to the works and lives of John Everett Millais\, William Holman Hunt\, Dante Gabriel Rossetti\, Edward Burne-Jones\, William Morris\, Jane Burden\, Elizabeth Siddall – and not forgetting author-cum-photographer Lewis Carroll – plus their important patrons\, John Ruskin and Thomas Combe. \n\n\n\nThe walk is near-circular\, beginning at the Museum of Oxford and ending outside the Oxford Union (St Michael’s Street). \n\n\n\nJoin a tour of Pre-Raphaelite Artists in Oxford to see Oxford through the eyes of an expert and uncover the artistic histories embedded in our city. \n\n\n\nAccessibility and further information: \n\n\n\nMeeting point: Museum of Oxford shop (located inside the Oxford Town Hall). Please arrive 5 minutes before the start of the walk and check in at the Museum Shop with our friendly front of house team. \n\n\n\nThe walk lasts 1.5 hours. \n\n\n\nThe itinerary includes cobbled streets\, uneven surfaces and narrow pavements. Additionally\, one of the stops is accessed via a very narrow passageway (optional). Please email museum@oxford.gov.uk if you would like to discuss any access requirements ahead of booking a walk. \n\n\n\nPlease note that this walk is recommended for ages 16+. \n\n\n\nYour ticket also gives you access to the MOX galleries on the day of the walk\, at any time during opening hours. \n\n\n\nMeet Your Tour Guide: Mark Davies \n\n\n\nMark Davies is an Oxford local historian\, public speaker\, and guide. His publications include the social and cultural importance of the city’s waterways (A Towpath Walk in Oxford; Alice in Waterland; Alice’s Oxford on Foot; What a Liberty!); historical crime (Stories of Oxford Castle; The Abingdon Waterturnpike Murder); a biography of the Oxford pastry cook who was the first Englishman to fly (King of all Balloons); and the insightful A Jericho Scrapbook and Jericho – a Celebration. \n\n\n\nUntil 2020 he had lived on an Oxford residential narrowboat for nearly 30 years\, and he is the Chair of the Jericho (Oxford) Living Heritage Trust. He is also a trustee of the Lewis Carroll Society\, a member of the Society of Authors\, and on the committee of the Alliance of Literary Societies. \n\n\n\nAccess at the Museum \n\n\n\nThe Museum is accessible for wheelchair users\, buggies\, and baby carriers. There is step-free\, level entry access to the Town Hall via the entrance closest to Carfax (to the left of the main steps as you face the Town Hall). Inside the Museum\, Museum Makers is accessible via a platform lift and lift to the basement level.
