Throughout the system there are acknowledged difficulties; organisms that are “imperfect”\, “strange originals” and things suspended in “betwixt” categories: coral that is neither mineral nor plant\, fungi that “seem to want” essential parts\, zoophytes suspended between kingdoms. \n\n\n\nCreated using roughly a decade of different generative systems (2016–2025)\, each with its own unique aesthetic\, and trained on imagery drawn from Wilkins’ own descriptions\, it becomes almost a cabinet of curiosities\, even as the logic that links each image remains unstable or not immediately legible. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWork 2:+\n\n\n\n\nBetween Things displays Wilkins’ phrases as evidence of classification under pressure—instances where his system hesitates\, hedges\, and cannot decide. Handwritten text is rendered large and placed into the environment as a record of doubt\, but one that is only visible at 3am\, for an hour. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWork 3:+\n\n\n\n\nAn Infinity of Lists assembles Wilkins’ language itself\, showing every word used in his system\, first mapped to the hierarchy he imposed\, then gradually reframed through the logic of word2vec. \n\n\n\nOver the duration of the work the mapping shifts from the symbolic architecture of Wilkins’ invented order toward statistical relations in learned embedding space. Photo credit: Lewis Ronald\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Kira Freije: Unspeak the Chorus\n\n\n\nWalk amongst Kira Freije’s life-sized figures within an atmospheric and emotionally charged space\, where groupings suggest fragments of larger imagined narratives. \n\n\n\nModern Art Oxford presents Unspeak the Chorus\, the Turner Prize nominated solo exhibition by British artist Kira Freije (b.1985\, lives and works in London)\, featuring a new body of work co-commissioned by Modern Art Oxford and The Hepworth Wakefield. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition is Freije’s first major solo presentation in the UK\, bringing together around twenty hand-welded\, life-size metal figures\, with the artist expanding her practice through the inclusion of animals and textiles. The resulting work transforms the Upper Gallery into an immersive and emotionally charged environment in which human and animal worlds meet. \n\n\n\nFreije’s hand-welded metal figures\, arranged in intimate groupings\, suggest fragments of a story without ever resolving into a fixed narrative. United by a palpable sense of kinship\, the figures appear at once connected and self-contained – celebrating\, loving\, grieving\, guiding\, resting\, reaching and exhaling. While subtle interactions unfold between the sculptures\, Freije deliberately leaves the scene open\, inviting viewers to bring their own interpretations and emotional responses to the work. \n\n\n\nTo create her life-size sculptures\, Freije casts her own hands and feet in aluminium before constructing each figure from the ground up. Welding strips of steel together in a process akin to drawing an outline in space\, she builds skeletal forms that are at once delicate and robust. Across embroidered textiles\, watercolours\, drawings\, mobiles\, and sound works\, she examines how women’s healthcare has been recorded\, classified\, and practised over time. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition combines new commissions\, existing works\, and historic manuscripts to highlight Plender’s multidisciplinary\, research-led practice. Installations trace shifting approaches to medicine and diagnosis\, opening with a presentation inspired by contemporary hospital architectures and waiting rooms. This builds on Plender’s ongoing project Our Bodies are Not the Problem (2021–)\, developed with the Glasgow Women’s Library\, exploring the links between ill health\, disability and structural inequalities. \n\n\n\nHistorical perspectives include Plender’s series Bringing Down the Flowers (2023–)\, watercolours in the style of genteel 19th-century flower paintings of plants historically used to induce abortion\, referencing orally transmitted reproductive knowledge. Three 17th-century manuscripts by astrologer-physician Richard Napier\, on loan from the Bodleian Library\, document consultations with women about their reproductive health\, alongside other ‘women’s problems’ such as ‘green sickness’\, a diagnosis formerly given only to unmarried women. \n\n\n\nDisplayed alongside these is Plender’s hanging mobile (2024) reflecting on humoral medicine (based on the ancient theory of the humours) and other systems of classification from the Renaissance to today. Bikes are left at the owner’s risk. \n\n\n\nOnce you’ve parked your bike\, you can enter the festival via the Pick Up Drop Off entrance. \n\n\n\nIf you live locally and are planning to cycle\, you may find the Yellow Gate\, North Lodge entrance (OX7 3EH) an easier way to access the festival. If you do this\, we ask that you lock your bike up neatly against the fence line on the right side of the driveway/road\, so as not to block the pedestrian pathway. \n\n\n\nYou can also cycle round to the bike park\, but please note the road from the Green Gate round to the Yellow Gate will be busy with festival traffic\, mainly flowing in the opposite direction\, through the festival. \n\n\n\nBy foot\n\n\n\nThe Yellow Gate\, North Lodge entrance\, OX7 3EH is the dedicated route for accessing the festival on foot from Charlbury. \n\n\n\nThis route takes you up the main driveway towards Cornbury House. Upon passing through the North Lodge gate there is a pedestrian/local box office on your left where you can scan your mobile QR code in return for a festival wristband. If you have any problems with your pass they’ll also be able to help solve this for you here. \n\n\n\nOnce you have your wristband there is a fenced-off pedestrian walkway that runs along the grass verge\, up the side of the driveway\, taking you straight up to the pedestrian arena entrance\, bringing you into the arena next to the main Wilderness Stage. \n\n\n\nPlease ensure you use this dedicated walkway\, as this road is still used throughout the festival for exiting traffic. \n\n\n\nPlease note – if you’re accessing the campsites from this route you cannot enter until after 12.00pm on Thursday when the arena is open as you will need to walk through the arena to reach any of the campsites! \n\n\n\nIf you’re walking home in the evening\, please wear bright/reflective clothing and bring a torch as there is minimal lighting along some stretches of the surrounding local roads. \n\n\n\nPedestrian Route Instructions \n\n\n\n\nExit the station and turn right\n\n\n\nFollow forest road\, continuing straight over the bridge and then up a slight incline.\n\n\n\nPart way up the incline\, take the first major turning to your right. This will be at a triangle junction that has a small grassy area with a large tree in its centre.**\n\n\n\nFollow the sharp right bend\, round onto church lane.\n\n\n\nContinue up this road\, with most of the houses on your left hand side\, until you reach the entrance to the church yard.\n\n\n\nFollow the path of the church yard through to the other side – please be respectful and keep to the path.\n\n\n\nOnce you reach the exit on the other side\, turn right and follow the road down and then back up until you reach Yellow Gate in your right.\n\n\n\nTurn right and walk up the driveway\, over the bridge and through North Lodge gate – be sure to use the pedestrian gate to the right of the cattlegrid. Do not try to talk over the cattlegrid.\n\n\n\nOnce you’re through the gates\, the pedestrian box office will be immediately on your left.\n\n\n\nHave your mobile QR code ready to collect your festival wristbands.\n\n\n\nOnce you’ve collected your wristbands\, head up the driveway using the designated walkway\, turn left and then immediately cross the road to follow the walkway round to the pedestrian arena entrance.\n\n\n\nDo not continue to walk down the road to your left\, this road is busy with traffic and will not permit pedestrian access to the festival.\n\n\n\n\n** if you carry on straight at this point you will reach the town centre of Charlbury.
