DESCRIPTION:Pets & their People\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Pets & their People\n\n\n\nWe have been domesticating animals for over ten thousand years. But why do we want tame wolves in our homes or wild cats on our laps? \n\n\n\nThis exhibition explores the relationship between humans and their pets – or pets and their humans. \n\n\n\nPets & their People draws on depictions of pets in stories\, imagery and poetry in the Bodleian’s collection – from one of the earliest recorded depictions of an assistance dog for the blind to a rare copy of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland that has never been displayed in the UK before.  \n\n\n\nThe exhibition asks how the special bond between owners and their pets has evolved over time\, and what that evolution tells us about who we really are. \n\n\n\nAre we taming our pets\, or are they bringing us back to our wild roots? \n\n\n\nExhibition book \n\n\n\nPets & their People \n\n\n\nBy Charles Foster \n\n\n\n\n			\n				\n			\n		Exhibition book – Pets & their People\n\n\n\nBestselling author Charles Foster provides an extraordinary mix of psychology\, science and cultural history as he explores the fascinating relationship between humans and their pets. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n			\n				\n			\n		\n\n\n\n\n\n\n			\n				\n			\n		\n\n\n\n\n\n\n			\n				\n			\n		\n\n\n\n\n\n\n			\n				\n			\n		\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThese wonderful images are actually postcards\, collected by the artist Tom Phillips (1937–2022) and part of the archive donated to the Bodleian Libraries. \n\n\n\nDating from the c1890s – 1960s\, they capture different relationships between people and the animals around them. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCall for submissions \n\n\n\nAs part of the exhibition\, the Bodleian Libraries are inviting members of the public to contribute to a contemporary record of people and their pets. Participants are encouraged to submit photographs featuring themselves and their pets\, either by recreating images from the Tom Phillips postcard collection or by sharing original photographs inspired by the theme. \n\n\n\nSend them to socialmedia@bodleian.ox.ac.uk. DESCRIPTION:Wonder of Birds Exhibition\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Wonder of Birds Exhibition\n\n\n\nA major new exhibition at the Bodleian Libraries invites visitors to step into the remarkable world of birds\, exploring their beauty\, symbolism and fragility through art\, literature and science. \n\n\n\nWonder of Birds draws inspiration from The Book of Birds\, created by artist Jackie Morris and writer Robert Macfarlane. Both the exhibition and the book reflect on the decline of bird populations while celebrating their cultural and natural significance. \n\n\n\nCurated by Antonia Harrison\, the exhibition unfolds through seven themed sections – from nest and egg to feather\, flight and migration – combining original artwork and writing with treasures from the Bodleian’s extensive collections. \n\n\n\nVisitors can explore rare and historic material\, including previously unseen glass plate negatives by pioneering wildlife photographer Emma Louisa Turner\, alongside early nature photography from Richard Kearton and his brother Cherry. \n\n\n\nAlso on display are striking life-size illustrations from Birds of America by John James Audubon\, as well as a rare Great Auk egg on loan from Oxford University Museum of Natural History. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition also highlights birds’ enduring influence on culture\, featuring works such as Maya Angelou’s ‘Caged Bird’ and Percy Bysshe Shelley’s handwritten notes on ‘To a Skylark’. Critical raw materials tend to have unique chemical properties which make them difficult to replace in technology. Photo credit: Victor Frankowski.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Appau Jnr Boakye-Yiadom: Modular Merger\n\n\n\nSound\, performance and museum display come together in Modular Merger\, a new exhibition by Appau Jnr Boakye-Yiadom exploring how collections shape the way we experience objects\, instruments and sound. \n\n\n\nDeveloped through research into the Bate Collection of Musical Instruments at the University of Oxford\, the exhibition brings together sound\, video and photography to consider what is revealed and concealed through the collection\, preservation and display of musical instruments. \n\n\n\nAt its centre is a new sound work created using recordings of historic instruments from the collection. Individual sounds unfold and accumulate over time\, inviting visitors to experience the instruments both separately and collectively. Throughout the exhibition\, fragmented images\, repeated forms and acts of cataloguing reflect on the ways museums organise and interpret objects. \n\n\n\nModular Merger marks the culmination of the inaugural Donna Lynas Residency (2023–26)\, a partnership between Wysing Arts Centre\, Modern Art Oxford\, Somerset House and South London Gallery\, created in memory of the curator Donna Lynas\, who was known for her long-term support of artist development. \n\n\n\nThis exhibition is supported by TORCH | The Oxford Research Centre in the Humanities\, part of the University of Oxford’s Humanities Division. With trains not running on Discovery Days\, there is a rare opportunity to see the locomotives up close. \n\n\n\nA colourful Centre Guide helps visitors navigate the site\, from the original 1932 Engine Shed to the impressive collection of preserved locomotives\, including 5900 Hinderton Hall. Guests can step onto the footplate and hear staff in character as they bring the engines to life\, capturing the rhythms of a working steam-era shed. \n\n\n\n\n			\n				\n			\n		\n\n\n\nAcross the site\, the Engine Shed atmosphere is carefully recreated\, with sounds and details that evoke daily railway life. The Carriage and Wagon section displays restored rolling stock from Victorian times to the 1940s\, including a VIP saloon believed to have been used by General Eisenhower during preparations for D-Day and later part of the GWR Royal Train\, alongside ongoing restoration work. Brunel’s Broad Gauge collection is also on display\, including locomotives\, coaches\, the transfer shed\, and remnants of the ambitious Atmospheric Railway. \n\n\n\nInteractive and interpretive experiences continue in the Signalling Centre\, where visitors can discover how rail traffic has been controlled over time\, with the Swindon Panel demonstrated on selected dates. A WWII air raid shelter offers a powerful glimpse into wartime history\, while the museum houses a vast and varied collection of smaller artefacts. The Road Transport Hangar adds further depth with examples of historic GWR road vehicles. \n\n\n\n\n			\n				\n			\n		\n\n\n\nDiscovery Days offer full access to the site\, with the restaurant\, shop\, museum\, Engine Shed displays\, carriage and wagon exhibits\, signalling centre\, and transfer shed all open to visitors. This is a 10 to 15-minute walk to the Town Centre / Kinecroft or 5 to 10 minutes on the BunkFest classic bus; this comes at a suggested donation of £1.00 per person. \n\n\n\nSite A:This area is for tents only and very close to facilities. Unfortunately\, no vehicles are allowed in this area\, but vehicles can be parked in the adjacent car parks\, as directed by the campsite volunteers. Wheelbarrows are available to transport camping equipment to your camping area. There is space for a limited number of disabled camping pitches for motorhomes and campervans on this site. This enables close proximity to the Clubhouse\, disabled toilets and BunkFest Bus. \n\n\n\nSite B:Camping for tents\, caravans and motor homes. Close to facilities \n\n\n\nSite C:Camping for tents\, caravans and motor homes\, it is not far from the facilities and is ideal for family groups or groups of friends. The Kinecroft\, which is the main festival site\, is located in the heart of the town. \n\n\n\nBy car \n\n\n\nIf you are going to BunkFest by car\, please use the excellent Park & Ride service operated by Thames Travel from the Hithercroft Road Industrial area. It will operate on Friday evening and all day Saturday & Sunday. \n\n\n\nAccess via the A4130 Wallingford Bypass. The roundabout is the first one on the bypass heading south/east or after the level crossing heading north/west. Postcode for SatNav OX10 9RB. \n\n\n\nParking is in the Hithercroft Industrial Estate area. Please follow the Bunkfest signs on the bypass and look out for our Park and Ride signs and where you should meet our volunteer parking team. \n\n\n\nBy train \n\n\n\nGWR run services from Oxford\, Reading and London to the nearest local stations of Cholsey and Didcot. The Cholsey & Wallingford Railway will be operating trains from Cholsey Station to Wallingford over the festival weekend\, with Wallingford Station only a 5-minute walk from the Kinecroft main stage. \n\n\n\nIt is possible to purchase a ‘Wallingford Rover’ ticket from local stations (Reading\, Oxford\, etc.) that is inclusive of travel on the ‘Bunk Line’. On Saturday\, there will be additional evening trains departing Wallingford at 6.00pm on Saturday & Sunday\, and 8.00pm\, 10.00pm and 11.00pm on Saturday\, so you can leave the car at home and also buy a pint (or two) at the station or on the train. \n\n\n\nDetails of train times and tickets on the Cholsey and Wallingford Railway are on the Cholsey & Wallingford Railway website. \n\n\n\nBy Bus \n\n\n\nOxford to Wallingford – Buses leave from stop H5 in St Aldates\, Oxford and pull up in Market Place\, Wallingford. \n\n\n\nReading to Wallingford – Buses leave from opposite the Reading train station and pull up in Market Place\, Wallingford. \n\n\n\nPlease note on BunkFest Saturday and Sunday\, between 7.00am and 7.00pm\, the town centre will be closed for the Street Fair. It also provides an opportunity to meet some of your local farmers and growers. \n\n\n\nThe market is operated by Cherwell District Council. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGood to know\n\n\n\nThe farmer’s market is held on the same site as the Banbury Charter Market. \n\n\n\nThe Charter Market has been trading for several centuries since the town was established back in the 17th Century. Today it hosts approximately 30 stalls offering a range of products\, including fruit and vegetables\, clothing\, footwear\, tools\, cards and garden plants. \n\n\n\nThe Royal Charter Market\, also operated by Cherwell District Council\, runs on Thursdays and Saturdays. There are additional antiques’ stalls on the second and fourth Thursday of each month.

The first theatre was built in 1836\, and a second in 1886. It is now owned by the Ambassador Theatre Group and hosts everything from ballet and opera to musicals. \n\n\n\nOn performance days\, the Box Office opens at noon and closes 15 minutes after the show starts. If there is a performance on a Sunday or Bank Holiday\, Box Office will open 2 hours before the show begins and close 15 minutes after the show starts. \n\n\n\nThere is a large air-conditioned bar with seating located below the Stalls Foyer\, two further bars in the Circle Foyer and an additional one at the back of the balcony.
