DESCRIPTION:Pets & their People\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Pets & their People\n\n\n\nWe have been domesticating animals for over ten thousand years. But why do we want tame wolves in our homes or wild cats on our laps? \n\n\n\nThis exhibition explores the relationship between humans and their pets – or pets and their humans. \n\n\n\nPets & their People draws on depictions of pets in stories\, imagery and poetry in the Bodleian’s collection – from one of the earliest recorded depictions of an assistance dog for the blind to a rare copy of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland that has never been displayed in the UK before.  \n\n\n\nThe exhibition asks how the special bond between owners and their pets has evolved over time\, and what that evolution tells us about who we really are. \n\n\n\nAre we taming our pets\, or are they bringing us back to our wild roots? \n\n\n\nExhibition book \n\n\n\nPets & their People \n\n\n\nBy Charles Foster \n\n\n\n\n			\n				\n			\n		Exhibition book – Pets & their People\n\n\n\nBestselling author Charles Foster provides an extraordinary mix of psychology\, science and cultural history as he explores the fascinating relationship between humans and their pets. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n			\n				\n			\n		\n\n\n\n\n\n\n			\n				\n			\n		\n\n\n\n\n\n\n			\n				\n			\n		\n\n\n\n\n\n\n			\n				\n			\n		\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThese wonderful images are actually postcards\, collected by the artist Tom Phillips (1937–2022) and part of the archive donated to the Bodleian Libraries. \n\n\n\nDating from the c1890s – 1960s\, they capture different relationships between people and the animals around them. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCall for submissions \n\n\n\nAs part of the exhibition\, the Bodleian Libraries are inviting members of the public to contribute to a contemporary record of people and their pets. Participants are encouraged to submit photographs featuring themselves and their pets\, either by recreating images from the Tom Phillips postcard collection or by sharing original photographs inspired by the theme. \n\n\n\nSend them to socialmedia@bodleian.ox.ac.uk. Both the exhibition and the book reflect on the decline of bird populations while celebrating their cultural and natural significance. \n\n\n\nCurated by Antonia Harrison\, the exhibition unfolds through seven themed sections – from nest and egg to feather\, flight and migration – combining original artwork and writing with treasures from the Bodleian’s extensive collections. \n\n\n\nVisitors can explore rare and historic material\, including previously unseen glass plate negatives by pioneering wildlife photographer Emma Louisa Turner\, alongside early nature photography from Richard Kearton and his brother Cherry. \n\n\n\nAlso on display are striking life-size illustrations from Birds of America by John James Audubon\, as well as a rare Great Auk egg on loan from Oxford University Museum of Natural History. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition also highlights birds’ enduring influence on culture\, featuring works such as Maya Angelou’s ‘Caged Bird’ and Percy Bysshe Shelley’s handwritten notes on ‘To a Skylark’. DESCRIPTION:Dinosaurs Are Forever at Blenheim Palace\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Dinosaurs Are Forever Exhibition  at Blenheim Palace\n\n\n\nFrom 11 August to 01 November 2026\, Blenheim Palace will host Dinosaurs Are Forever\, a major new exhibition by artist Jay Jay Burridge\, created in partnership with the Museum of Natural History\, University of Oxford.  \n\n\n\nAt the heart of the exhibition are five monumental sculptures of Megalosaurus\, the first dinosaur ever to be scientifically named.  \n\n\n\nDiscovered in Oxfordshire in 1824\, Megalosaurus changed our understanding of the natural world and helped lay the foundations of modern palaeontology. \n\n\n\nThe fossil remains of Megalosaurus are now on display at the Museum of Natural History\, University of Oxford. \n\n\n\nThese sculptures are not traditional museum reconstructions. Built from advanced modern materials and designed to be fully articulated\, the sculptures reimagine dinosaurs through a contemporary lens.  \n\n\n\nMaking their public debut at Blenheim Palace\, the exhibition offers visitors a rare opportunity to encounter the world’s first named dinosaur reimagined for the 21st century. She hopes you will come along for the ride. \n\n\n\nJoin ‘When the Blackbird Sings’ in Blackbird Leys for a warm welcome and the start of a glorious odyssey through the city of Oxford. You will meet remarkable pioneers\, passionate changemakers\, a patron saint and fellow humans simply trying to survive.  \n\n\n\nYou will be invited to hop aboard a bus to travel back to the 8th Century and forward to the 21st on a quest to find ancestors on whose shoulders Paulette can stand.  \n\n\n\nThe journey will end at the new Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities\, with truth in our mouths and hope in our hearts. \n\n\n\nBefore You Arrive \n\n\n\nThis is a promenade production\, meaning the performance takes place across several locations in Oxford. Audience members will travel between locations primarily by bus\, with one short walking section of approximately 0.75 kilometres. \n\n\n\nThe performance begins in Blackbird Leys\, the starting venue is to be confirmed. Here tickets will be checked on arrival before the show begins. \n\n\n\nPlease avoid bringing large or heavy bags with you. The performance will last 2.5 hours and there will be some drinks and snacks incorporated. \n\n\n\nDuring the Performance \n\n\n\nOnce the show begins in Blackbird Leys\, audience members will board a bus which forms part of the performance itself. The route travels through Temple Cowley\, Cowley and into Oxford city centre. \n\n\n\nAll audience members will have a seat on the bus\, and headphones will be provided so you can hear the performers clearly throughout the journey. \n\n\n\nWhile everything possible will be done to keep the performance running to schedule\, there may occasionally be slight variations to timings due to traffic conditions on Oxford’s roads. \n\n\n\nThe bus will stop on Oxford High Street for a short walking section of the production. One of the locations visited during this section is a faith building (a church). After this\, audiences will reboard the bus for the final journey north along Woodstock Road to the Schwarzman Centre (OX2 6GG)\, where the performance concludes. \n\n\n\nAfter the Show \n\n\n\nAt the end of the performance\, you are welcome to leave directly from the Schwarzman Centre. \n\n\n\nFor anyone who has parked a car or left a bicycle at the starting point\, there will also be the option to take the bus back to Blackbird Leys after the show. It will be ensured that you can return easily to where you began your journey! This is not include in the running time of the show. \n\n\n\nAccessibility \n\n\n\nIf you have any access requirements\, please contact the box office in advance to discuss your needs. DESCRIPTION:Museum of Oxford Walks: Beer\, Sausages and Marmalade\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Museum of Oxford Walks: Beer\, Sausages and Marmalade\n\n\n\nThis 90-minute walk led by local historian Liz Woolley will take you on a tantalising tour of the quirky world of food and drink in 19th-century Oxford. \n\n\n\nFrom the ‘Celebrated Oxford Sausage’ to Frank Cooper’s famous ‘Oxford Marmalade’\, Liz will expertly guide you through locations associated with Oxford’s unique food and drink heritage. \n\n\n\nFind out how Oxford’s eponymous delicacies went hand-in-hand with the city’s growing importance as a desirable tourist destination as you visit sites including Morrell’s Lion Brewery\, the 250-year-old Covered Market and some iconic pubs. \n\n\n\nYou’ll also discover the city’s long history of malting and brewing\, and how this important trade contributed to Oxford’s burgeoning industrial economy. Find out how the significant families which controlled these businesses influenced Oxford’s developing economic\, social and political life. \n\n\n\nJoin a Beer\, Sausages and Marmalade walking tour to see Oxford through the eyes of an expert and discover the unique food heritage embedded in the heart of Oxford. \n\n\n\nAs part of the tour\, you will see: Frank Cooper’s Marmalade Factory\, the old Swan Brewery malthouse\, the street that was once described as a ‘dreadful sort of place’ – and more historic Oxford locations. \n\n\n\nAccessibility and further information \n\n\n\nMeeting point: Museum of Oxford shop (located inside the Oxford Town Hall). Please email museum@oxford.gov.uk if you would like to discuss any access requirements ahead of booking a walk.  \n\n\n\nMeet your tour guide: Liz Woolley \n\n\n\nLiz Woolley is a local historian specialising in the history of Oxford’s ‘town’ – as opposed to ‘gown’ – and of the everyday lives of ordinary working people\, chiefly during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Liz has lived in Oxford for forty years and has an MSc in English Local History from the University’s Department for Continuing Education. She is an experienced tour guide\, speaker\, tutor\, researcher\, and writer\, who enjoys helping people discover the perhaps less well-known history of Oxford and its citizens. \n\n\n\nAccess at the Museum \n\n\n\nThe Museum is accessible for wheelchair users\, buggies\, and baby carriers. There is step-free\, level entry access to the Town Hall via the entrance closest to Carfax (to the left of the main steps as you face the Town Hall). Inside the Museum\, Museum Makers is accessible via a platform lift and lift to the basement level.
