She has been returning ever since. \n\n\n\nElisabeth often includes music by Robert Schumann in her programmes and her finale tonight is his Carnival-Jape from Vienna. Schumann was staying in the city\, trying without any success to interest the Viennese publishers in his music journal. \n\n\n\nIt was a bleak time\, he was homesick and missing his beloved Clara. SUMMARY:Wonder of Birds Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Wonder of Birds Exhibition\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Wonder of Birds Exhibition\n\n\n\nA major new exhibition at the Bodleian Libraries invites visitors to step into the remarkable world of birds\, exploring their beauty\, symbolism and fragility through art\, literature and science. \n\n\n\nWonder of Birds draws inspiration from The Book of Birds\, created by artist Jackie Morris and writer Robert Macfarlane. Both the exhibition and the book reflect on the decline of bird populations while celebrating their cultural and natural significance. \n\n\n\nCurated by Antonia Harrison\, the exhibition unfolds through seven themed sections – from nest and egg to feather\, flight and migration – combining original artwork and writing with treasures from the Bodleian’s extensive collections. \n\n\n\nVisitors can explore rare and historic material\, including previously unseen glass plate negatives by pioneering wildlife photographer Emma Louisa Turner\, alongside early nature photography from Richard Kearton and his brother Cherry. \n\n\n\nAlso on display are striking life-size illustrations from Birds of America by John James Audubon\, as well as a rare Great Auk egg on loan from Oxford University Museum of Natural History. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition also highlights birds’ enduring influence on culture\, featuring works such as Maya Angelou’s ‘Caged Bird’ and Percy Bysshe Shelley’s handwritten notes on ‘To a Skylark’. Global perspectives include imagery from The Book of the Fixed Stars and the poetic journey of The Conference of the Birds. \n\n\n\nEnhancing the experience\, a specially commissioned soundscape by sound artist Jason Singh immerses visitors in birdsong and natural environments\, while artist duo Daniel & Clara present an interactive ‘Rewilding Imagination field guide’. \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Wonder of Birds poster\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFree admission\, no ticket required \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nSaturday 02 May 2026 to Sunday 03 January 2027 \n\n\n\nMonday to Friday from 9.00am to 5.00pmSaturday from 10.00am to 5.00pmSunday from 11.00am to 4.00pm \n\n\n\nLocation: \n\n\n\nThe Treasury\, Weston Library

SUMMARY:34: The critical raw materials shaping our future
DESCRIPTION:34: The critical raw materials shaping our future\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Breaking Ground\n\n\n\n34: The Critical Raw Materials Shaping Our Future is a major new exhibition at Oxford University Museum of Natural History explores the hidden materials that power modern life — from smartphones and batteries to medical equipment and jet engines. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition examines the 34 raw materials considered essential to the UK’s future\, revealing the global supply chains\, ethical challenges and scientific innovations behind the minerals that underpin everyday technology. \n\n\n\nDeveloped in collaboration with researchers from the University of Oxford’s Oxford EARTH Programme and departments across the physical\, life and social sciences\, the exhibition explores how increasing demand for green energy and digital technology is transforming the global race for critical materials. \n\n\n\nVisitors can discover why substances such as lithium\, cobalt and rare earth elements are so important to modern society\, why supply chains are becoming increasingly fragile\, and how scientists and industry are searching for more sustainable and ethical ways to source\, use and recycle these materials. \n\n\n\nThrough interactive displays\, scientific research\, historic objects and contemporary technologies\, the exhibition examines the future of extraction\, sustainability and resource security\, while highlighting the environmental and geopolitical challenges linked to critical raw materials. \n\n\n\nDesigned for audiences of all ages\, the exhibition is accompanied by a programme of talks\, workshops\, tours and family activities exploring the science\, ethics and global impact of the materials shaping our future. \n\n\n\nWhat are critical raw materials?\n\n\n\nCritical raw materials are those essential to key technologies but their supply may be limited\, unsustainable or unethical. Critical raw materials tend to have unique chemical properties which make them difficult to replace in technology. The UK government includes 34 raw materials on its designated critical list\, but lists vary from country to country. \n\n\n\n\n\n\naluminium\n\n\n\nantimony\n\n\n\nbismuth\n\n\n\nborates\n\n\n\ncobalt\n\n\n\ngallium\n\n\n\ngermanium\n\n\n\nhafnium\n\n\n\nhelium\n\n\n\nindium\n\n\n\niridium\n\n\n\niron\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nlithium\n\n\n\nmagnesite\n\n\n\nmagnesium\n\n\n\nmanganese\n\n\n\nnatural graphite\n\n\n\nnickel\n\n\n\nniobium\n\n\n\nphosphorus\n\n\n\nplatinum\n\n\n\nrare earth elements (REEs)\n\n\n\nrhenium\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nrhodium\n\n\n\nruthenium\n\n\n\nsilicon\n\n\n\nsodium\n\n\n\ntantalum\n\n\n\ntellurium\n\n\n\ntin\n\n\n\ntitanium\n\n\n\ntungsten\n\n\n\nvanadium\n\n\n\nzinc\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nPrices: \n\n\n\n\nEntry to the Museum is FREE and not ticketed.\n\n\n\nNo booking required.\n\n\n\nBooking is required for organisations/groups of more than ten people visiting on the same day.\n\n\n\n\nOpening hours: \n\n\n\n\nMonday to Sunday from 10.00am to 5.00pm\n\n\n\nLast entry at 4.45pm\n\n\n\nClosed on 24\, 25\, & 26 December\n\n\n\n\nAccessibility: \n\n\n\nPlease contact the friendly team at the museum by telephone (01865 272 950) or email (foh@oum.ox.ac.uk) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGallery\n\n\n\nClick images to expand \n\n\n\n\nBattery Ores\n\n\n\nBismuth\n\n\n\nCobalt\n\n\n\nDysprosium\n\n\n\nHalite\n\n\n\nREEs\n\n\n\n\nImage credit: Sarah Bell

Oxford-based artist Saad Qureshi invites people to describe what paradise represents or looks like to them\, and translates their hopes and dreams into sculptural mindscapes.  \n\n\n\nOn Paradise features recent and newly commissioned works by Qureshi\, including pieces inspired by the paradisial imaginings of communities in Oxford. Curated by anthropologist Paul Basu\, Qureshi’s remarkable works are juxtaposed with historical objects drawn from the University collections. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFree event. SUMMARY:Plain Things Wonders Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:About Plain Things Wonders Exhibition\n\n\n\nPlain Things Wonders tells the story of how paying attention to nature can make plain things into wonders. \n\n\n\nMarking 400 years since the publication of Francis Bacon’s Sylva Sylvarum (1626)\, the exhibition unfolds histories of citizen science\, lay participation in natural observation\, and how projects like Robert Hooke’s Micrographia (1665) and Gilbert White’s Natural History of Selbourne (1789) discover wonder in plain things. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition connects the science of natural history with the art of illustration\, attention and visualisation. It asks how book art makes the ordinary stuff of nature beautiful\, and how the long history of observation links with modern ecological challenges. \n\n\n\nCome and embrace the opportunities to notice the plain things of the natural world in your everyday life. \n\n\n\nCurators \n\n\n\n\nDr Kathryn Murphy\, Oriel College and Faculty of English\, University of Oxford\n\n\n\nToby Stinson\, Faculty of English\, University of Oxford\n\n\n\nDr Kiera Chapman\, Faculty of English\, University of Oxford\n\n\n\nDr Ollie Douglas\, Curator of Collections\, Museum of English Rural Life\n\n\n\nStephanie Holt\, Faculty of History\, University of Oxford\n\n\n\nProfessor Yadvinder Malhi\, Oriel College and School of Geography and the Environment\, University of Oxford\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFree admission\, no ticket required \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nThursday 05 November 2026 to Sunday 29 August 2027 \n\n\n\nMonday to Friday from 9.00am to 5.00pmSaturday from 10.00am to 5.00pmSunday from 11.00am to 4.00pm \n\n\n\nLocation: \n\n\n\nST Lee Gallery\, Weston Library \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGallery\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Stephen Emmerson\, Translation of Die Aufzeichnungen des Malte Laurids Brigge by Rainer Maria Rilke\, London 2015.\, Cons.Res. 43._2. DESCRIPTION:Stewart Lee vs The Man-Wulf\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Stewart Lee vs The Man-Wulf\n\n\n\nOxford Playhouse patron Stewart Lee is again back by popular demand with a brand-new show. \n\n\n\nLee shares his stage with a tough-talking werewolf comedian from the dark forests of the subconscious who hates humanity. The Man-Wulf lays down a ferocious comedy challenge to the culturally irrelevant and physically enfeebled Lee. \n\n\n\nCan the beast inside us all be silenced with the silver bullet of Lee’s unprecedentedly critically acclaimed style of stand-up? \n\n\n\nStewart Lee (“The world’s greatest living stand-up comedian” The Times)\, is in danger of being left behind. He’s approaching sixty with debilitating health conditions\, his TV profile has diminished\, and his once BAFTA award-winning style of stand-up seems obsolete. \n\n\n\nBut can Lee unleash his inner Man-Wulf to position himself alongside comedy legends like Dave Chappelle\, Ricky Gervais\, and Jordan Peterson at the forefront of side-splitting stadium-stuffing sh*t-posting? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReviews\n\n\n\n\n“Basically\, back-to-basics Basic Lee is anything but”.  \n\n\n\nMail on Sunday on Stewart Lee: Basic Lee\, 2023 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll orders will be subject to a per transaction booking \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nMonday 09 November at 7.30pmTuesday 10 November at 7.30pmWednesday 11 November at 7.30pm \n\n\n\nRunning time:2 hours\, including an interval \n\n\n\nAge guidance:14+ \n\n\n\nContent guidance:This show includes strong language \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGallery\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \nPhotos by Steve Uullathorne\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Oxford Playhouse\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nOxford Playhouse and its Burton Taylor Studio present and produce several live performances and feature a rich array of British and international dramas\, family entertainment\, contemporary dance and music\, student and amateur shows\, comedy\, lectures and poetry. \n\n\n\nThe Playhouse not only produces and tours its own theatrical productions\, but it also fosters creativity through its Artists in Residence program and the Playhouse Plays Out series\, which brings unique events to various locations across the county. \n\n\n\nThe theatre’s Participation Team engages over 15\,000 individuals annually\, offering an extensive range of activities\, including post-show discussions\, workshops\, work experience opportunities\, holiday programs\, a youth theatre\, and a company for young performers. \n\n\n\nOxford Playhouse stands dedicated to its mission of being a Playhouse for all\, striving to ignite inspiration and bring about transformative experiences through its commitment to creativity on its stages\, within its community and online. \n\n\n\nDiscover more about Oxford Playhouse\, including travel\, access and venue information.

DESCRIPTION:Kaleidoscope Chamber Collective: Making Chamber Music Part I\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Kaleidoscope Chamber Collective: Making Chamber Music Part I\n\n\n\nAn early evening concert that brings together musicologist Professor Laura Tunbridge and the brilliant Kaleidoscope Chamber Collective.  \n\n\n\nThis special performance invites audiences to explore the intimate side of chamber music\, with works written for one to five players. \n\n\n\nFrom the quiet intensity of solo performance to the rich interplay of small ensembles\, the programme explores how chamber music thrives in small-scale settings.  \n\n\n\nIncluding a solo work from Bach\, a Corelli Trio Sonata\, and Ligeti’s Six Bagatelles for wind quintet\, Professor Tunbridge will introduce each piece\, sharing historical and musical insights to reveal how the number of players shapes the music.  \n\n\n\nThis is music at its most personal: no conductor\, one player per part\, and every voice heard.  \n\n\n\nPerformers: \n\n\n\nAdam Walker flute \n\n\n\nArmand Djikoloum oboe \n\n\n\nCristina Mateo Sáez clarinet \n\n\n\nAmy Harman bassoon \n\n\n\nAnnemarie Federle horn \n\n\n\nElena Urioste violin \n\n\n\nRosalind Ventris viola \n\n\n\nLaura van der Heijden cello \n\n\n\nCarina Cosgrave double bass \n\n\n\nTom Poster piano \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReviews\n\n\n\n\n“Fierce and assertive\, fragile and ecstatic\, all done with textural clarity and exemplary control of pacing.” \n\n\n\nThe Strad \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFrom £15.40 – £30.80  \n\n\n\nTickets are subject to a transaction fee \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nTuesday 10 November 2026 at 5.00pm \n\n\n\nLocation: \n\n\n\nSohmen Concert Hall

DESCRIPTION:Kaleidoscope Chamber Collective: Making Chamber Music Part II\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Kaleidoscope Chamber Collective: Making Chamber Music Part II\n\n\n\nProfessor Laura Tunbridge and the Kaleidoscope Chamber Collective return to the stage for an evening of music that explores larger chamber music ensembles.  \n\n\n\nThis concert continues the journey begun earlier in the evening\, gradually expanding the ensemble to include up to nine players. As more musicians join the stage\, the music becomes richer and more layered.  \n\n\n\nIncluding extracts from Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire\, Warlock’s The Curlew and Schubert’s Octet\, and culminating in a rare performance of Louise Farrenc’s Nonet\, Professor Tunbridge will introduce the works and share insights on how ensemble size shapes the character\, structure\, and emotional impact of the music.  \n\n\n\nWhether you’re attending both concerts or just the evening performance\, this is a chance to experience chamber music in all its depth and diversity and to discover something new along the way. \n\n\n\nPerformers: \n\n\n\nAdam Walker flute \n\n\n\nArmand Djikoloum oboe \n\n\n\nCristina Mateo Sáez clarinet \n\n\n\nAmy Harman bassoon \n\n\n\nAnnemarie Federle horn \n\n\n\nElena Urioste violin \n\n\n\nRosalind Ventris viola \n\n\n\nLaura van der Heijden cello \n\n\n\nCarina Cosgrave double bass \n\n\n\nTom Poster piano \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReviews\n\n\n\n\n“Fierce and assertive\, fragile and ecstatic\, all done with textural clarity and exemplary control of pacing.” \n\n\n\nThe Strad \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFrom £15.40 – £30.80  \n\n\n\nTickets are subject to a transaction fee \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nTuesday 10 November 2026 at 7.30pm \n\n\n\nLocation: \n\n\n\nSohmen Concert Hall
