SUMMARY:Unruly: in conversation with David Mitchell
DESCRIPTION:Unruly: in conversation with David Mitchell about his new book\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Unruly: in conversation with David Mitchell about his new book\n\n\n\nJoin BAFTA Award-winning actor\, writer\, and comedian David Mitchell as he discusses his new book\, Unruly. \n\n\n\nA serious book by a very funny man\, Unruly is for anyone who has ever wondered how we got here – and who is to blame. \n\n\n\nThink you know the Kings and Queens of England? Think again. \n\n\n\nIn Unruly\, David Mitchell explores how early England’s monarchs\, while acting as feared rulers firmly guiding their subjects’ destinies\, were\, in reality\, a bunch of lucky sods who were mostly as silly and weird in real life as they appear to us today in their portraits. \n\n\n\nTaking us right back to King Arthur (spoiler: he didn’t exist)\, David tells the founding story of post-Roman England right up to the reign of Elizabeth I (spoiler alert: she dies).  \n\n\n\nIt’s a tale of narcissists\, inadequate self-control\, excessive beheadings\, middle-management insurrection\, uncivil wars\, and at least one total Cnut\, as the English evolved from having their crops nicked by the thug with the largest armed gang to bowing and paying taxes to a divinely anointed King. \n\n\n\nHow this happened\, who it happened to and why the hell it matters in twenty-first-century Britain are all questions David answers with brilliance\, wit and the full erudition of a man who once studied history – and is damned if he’ll let it off the hook for the mess it’s made of everything. \n\n\n\nDavid Mitchell is a BAFTA Award-winning actor\, writer and comedian who has starred in many of the UK’s best-loved shows\, including Peep Show and That Mitchell and Webb Look.  \n\n\n\nHe is a frequent participant on British panel shows\, including Would I Lie to You?\, QI\, Mock the Week\, and Have I Got News for You\, and is one of the Observer’s most popular columnists. Unruly: A History of England’s Kings and Queens is his first history book. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important ticketing information below \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTicketing information\n\n\n\nPrices: From £40.72Tickets are subject to a transaction fee \n\n\n\nAll tickets include a £20.00 book. \n\n\n\nAge guidance: Under 5s will not be permitted into the venue. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout New Theatre Oxford\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\nThere has been a theatre on George Street for almost 170 years.
