DESCRIPTION:The Unthanks\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Unthanks\n\n\n\nHow many artists have journeyed through as much musical ground as The Unthanks over the past two decades?  \n\n\n\nBBC 6 Music regulars\, but equally to be found on Radios 2\, 3 and 4\, the Tyneside band are like magpies\, picking up undiscovered jewels\, reframing history and drawing on the worlds of folk\, jazz\, orchestral\, electronica and art-rock to create their own unique truth and beauty.  \n\n\n\nThey have won Mojo Magazine Folk Album of the Year twice\, they were the only British folk representation in The Guardian’s and Uncut’s Best Albums of the Decade (worldwide\, all genres)\, and count amongst their admirers fellow storytellers including Elvis Costello\, Maxine Peake\, Michael Sheen\, Rosanne Cash\, Martin Freeman\, Robert Wyatt\, Martin Hayes\, Nick Hornby\, Ben Myers and Dawn French. \n\n\n\nUsing the traditional music of the North East of England as a starting point\, the influence of Miles Davis\, Steve Reich\, Sufjan Stevens\, Robert Wyatt\, Antony & The Johnsons\, King Crimson and Tom Waits can be heard in the band’s 16 records to date\, earning them a Mercury Music Prize nomination and international acclaim along the way. \n\n\n\nThe Unthanks are constantly evolving. DESCRIPTION:Summer Concert May 2026\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Summer Concert May 2026\n\n\n\nGioachino Rossini\, world-famous at 21\, admired by Beethoven and Schubert\, and the greatest writer of comic opera\, more or less gave up composing at 37. (Health\, wealth\, several houses and a new mistress?)  \n\n\n\nHowever\, at the age of 71\, he composed the Petite Messe Solennelle\, one of the most intriguing works of the 19th century. \n\n\n\nNeither short nor solemn\, the title is either a joke or refers to the small forces he had in mind: 12 singers (including castrati)\, two pianos and a harmonium. Behind the shimmering tunefulness is music of great majesty\, rigour\, depth and hushed solemnity.  \n\n\n\nToo long for a church service\, it was first performed in a Parisian salon. Quirkily\, it quotes a composer friend writing in the style of Palestrina in the opening Kyrie and has an extended piano solo as the Offertorium.  \n\n\n\nAbove all\, Rossini’s mature genius for melody and musical architecture is dazzling throughout. \n\n\n\nWith four superb soloists\, a harmonium and the inclusion of a performance of Rossini’s ‘Première communion’ from ‘Péchés de vieillesse’ (‘Sins of Old Age’) by dazzling pianist Julian Littlewood\, you are guaranteed a wonderful and memorable spring evening. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFrom £20.00 \n\n\n\nA fee of £1.50 per transaction applies to bookings for this event across all channels – website\, phone and in-person bookings at the Box Office.
