SUMMARY:Oxford Millennium Orchestra: Shostakovich 10 and Mendelssohn Violin Concerto
DESCRIPTION:Oxford Millennium Orchestra: Shostakovich 10 and Mendelssohn Violin Concerto \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Oxford Millennium Orchestra: Shostakovich 10 and Mendelssohn Violin Concerto \n\n\n\nFelix Mendelssohn – Violin Concerto in E minor Dimitri Shostakovich – Symphony No. 10 \n\n\n\nViolin – Violetta Suvini \n\n\n\nConductor – Joe Davies \n\n\n\nThe final concerto that Mendelssohn ever wrote\, the Violin Concerto in E Minor shows the violin at its best. Unusually\, the soloist opens the concerto in dramatic\, soaring fashion\, and from then on the violin is in beautiful dialogue with the orchestra\, often in an almost speech-like manner. \n\n\n\nShostakovich’s 10th Symphony premiered in Leningrad (now St Petersburg) in 1953\, just months after Stalin’s death\, and is often seen as the composer’s musical reflection upon the repressions and horrors of the previous decades. \n\n\n\nShostakovich frequently trod the fine line between working within the Soviet authority’s cultural constraints and pushing beyond these boundaries\, and his 10th Symphony embodies some of this unease and duality\, much like it operates both on the broader sociocultural plane and at the depths of the composer’s innermost emotions. \n\n\n\nThe Oxford Millennium Orchestra\, comprised of university undergraduates\, postgraduates\, and staff\, as well as members of the wider Oxford community\, is an ambitious and exciting large-scale symphony orchestra\, with recent critically-acclaimed performances of Mahler 3\, Mahler 7\, Shostakovich 5\, and Berlioz’s ‘Symphonie fantastique’. \n\n\n\nThe orchestra is known for its big\, bold\, and daring performances\, and its most recent concert in the Sheldonian was described by ‘Seen and Heard International’ as ‘thrilling’\, ‘gloriously emphatic’\, ‘palpable and dynamic’. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFull Price – £22.00 (Premium)\, £16.00 (Concession)Concession – £11.00 (Premium)\, £8.00 (Standard) \n\n\n\nDates and times: \n\n\n\nFriday 12 June 2026 at 7.30pm \n\n\n\nDoor open at 7.00pm \n\n\n\nLatecomers will be permitted only between movements or during the interval \n\n\n\nRunning time: \n\n\n\nApproximately 1 hour and 45 minutes \n\n\n\nThere is a 15-minute interval at approximately 8.00pm \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Sheldonian Theatre\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nHome to ceremonial occasions and a raft of exciting events\, the magnificent and versatile Sheldonian Theatre is the focal point of the University of Oxford and is a unique space to experience live music. \n\n\n\nTo see an interactive map of the theatre\, click here. \n\n\n\nFind out more about the Sheldonian Theatre\, including facilities\, access and venue information.
