SUMMARY:Instruments of Time and Truth: Handel’s Messiah
DESCRIPTION:Handel’s Messiah by Instruments of Time and Truth\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Handel’s Messiah by Instruments of Time and Truth\n\n\n\nHandel’s Messiah by Instruments of Time and Truth at University Church of St Mary the Virgin is a highlight of Oxford’s musical calendar. \n\n\n\nDon’t miss this chance to hear the quintessential Christmas work in the expert hands of the city’s own period-instrument orchestra and world-renowned conductor\, Edward Higginbottom. \n\n\n\nSoloists: Charlotte Bowden\, Elizabeth Nurse\, William Anderson & Filippo Turkheimer \n\n\n\nOxford Consort of Voices \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important ticketing information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nPrices: \n\n\n\nFrom £16.00 to £50.00 \n\n\n\nDuration: \n\n\n\n2 hours 30 minutes with an interval \n\n\n\nDoors open: \n\n\n\n4.00pm for a 5.00pm start \n\n\n\nIf you require a wheelchair space or accessible seating for this event\, please call 01865 305 305 or email boxoffice@oxfordplayhouse.com for further assistance. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganiser\n\n\n\n\n\nInstruments of Time and Truth is Oxford’s own period instrument orchestra\, presenting world-class performances of Baroque and Classical music in Oxford and around the UK. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDid you know…\n\n\n\nHandel’s Messiah is probably the most performed choral work in history\, and\, despite being about the whole of Jesus’ life\, it is now mainly performed at Christmas. \n\n\n\nMessiah was originally an Easter offering and premiered in Dublin on 13 April 1742. The first part prophesied the birth of Jesus Christ\, the second exalted his sacrifice for humankind\, and the final section heralded his Resurrection. \n\n\n\nMessiah’s success in Dublin was soon quickly repeated in London when it was performed for the first time in London a year later at the Covent Garden Theatre. It took time for Messiah to find its niche as a Christmas favourite\, but now\, of course\, Handel’s Messiah is a fixture of the Christmas season. \n\n\n\nHandel composed Messiah in an astounding interlude – between three and four weeks in August and September 1741. Whilst some think it was divine inspiration\, he was actually just really good at writing quickly. He composed operas of a similar length during the short times between theatrical seasons. \n\n\n\nThe original version of Messiah is lost\, as Handel edited and re-worked the music in the years following the premiere. And to create work for as many players as possible extra parts were written for more instruments. \n\n\n\nPS: The tradition of standing for the Hallelujah chorus was begun by King George II at the London premiere – and when the King stands\, so does everybody else.

SUMMARY:Dire Streets – The Dire Straits Tribute
DESCRIPTION:Dire Streets – The Dire Straits Tribute\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Dire Streets – The Dire Straits Tribute\n\n\n\nDire Streets bring to life the classic songs of one of the world’s greatest guitar bands with a level of musicianship and attention to detail that makes them the standout Dire Straits tribute in the UK. \n\n\n\nThe two-hour theatre show includes faithful renditions of classic studio tracks along with extended live versions from some of the legendary Dire Straits concerts. \n\n\n\nFor over a decade\, Dire Streets have performed Dire Straits’ incredible back catalogue to thousands of theatre-goers across the UK. \n\n\n\nNo other Dire Streets tribute act comes as close to reproducing Mark Knopfler’s distinctive guitar and vocal tones – making Dire Streets as near to the original band as you can see live. \n\n\n\nThe six-piece band is made up of some of the country’s top tribute musicians and delivers a stunning show that fulfils their mission of doing justice to one of the most original and talented bands the UK has ever produced. \n\n\n\nThe band makes no attempt to look like the original\, so no headbands or pink suits\, just brilliant songs skilfully played with the enthusiasm and respect they deserve. \n\n\n\nAbout Dire Straits \n\n\n\nDire Straits were one of the major guitar-based bands of the late 70s. Despite forming at the height of Punk\, frontman Mark Knopfler’s distinctive guitar picking style gave the band an alternative and instantly recognisable sound. \n\n\n\nThe band reached its peak in the mid 80s\, playing larger venues including a memorable slot at Live Aid. \n\n\n\nSo far\, record sales have reached over 100 million worldwide and Knopfler is still regarded as one of the finest guitarists and songwriters this country has produced. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWatch the trailer\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nAll tickets £27.75 \n\n\n\nTicket prices include a £1.00 Restoration Levy\, a £1.50 Booking Fee and a 25p Community Fund Levy. \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nFriday 23 January 2026 at 7.30pm \n\n\n\nRunning time: \n\n\n\n2 hours 30 minutes \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Kenton Theatre\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nSituated in the centre of Henley-on-Thames\, the Kenton Theatre is the fourth-oldest working theatre in the UK and a registered charity.
