SUMMARY:Haydn’s Nelson Mass
DESCRIPTION:Haydn’s Nelson Mass\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Haydn’s Nelson Mass\n\n\n\nThe City of Oxford Choir\, in collaboration with Instruments of Time and Truth\, invites you to experience the rich choral soundworlds of Haydn\, Mozart\, and Beethoven as we celebrate 20 years under the direction of our Musical Director\, Duncan Aspden. \n\n\n\nHaydn’s Nelson Mass\, also known as the Mass in Troubled Times\, was written during immense geopolitical uncertainty\, with Napoleon threatening Austrian sovereignty at a time of economic upheaval for the nation. The resulting work is often described as the composer’s greatest composition\, exuding triumphant jubilation amidst dramatic\, darker passages. \n\n\n\nHaydn’s masterpiece will be accompanied by Mozart’s energetic settings of the Solemn Vespers\, his final piece written for Salzburg Cathedral\, with each movement expertly dancing around the musical demands of his conservative employer. Our programme is supported by two smaller works: Regina Coeli\, another Mozart work\, and Beethoven’s more contemplative Elegische Gesang. \n\n\n\nSoloists: Charlotte Bowden\, Bethany Horak-Hallett\, Thomas Elwin\, and Edward Grint. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\n£15.00 – £35.00 \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nSaturday 28 June 2025 at 7.30pm \n\n\n\nDoors open at 7.00pm \n\n\n\nRunning time: \n\n\n\n2 hours\, including an interval \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout SJE Arts Oxford\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSJE Arts Oxford is a concert venue and arts organisation based at St John the Evangelist Church on Iffley Road\, Oxford. \n\n\n\nThe church itself was built in the 19th century as part of a monastery established by the Cowley Fathers\, an Anglican religious community. SUMMARY:Coleridge-Taylor Hiawatha's Wedding Feast
DESCRIPTION:Coleridge-Taylor Hiawatha’s Wedding Feast\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Coleridge-Taylor Hiawatha’s Wedding Feast\n\n\n\nSamuel Coleridge-Taylor was one of the very few Black classical composers to achieve large-scale renown! His most popular work by far\, Hiawatha’s Wedding Feast\, owes its success to its rhythmic vitality\, at times sounding like a pre-echo of the American music that would soon emerge in the early 20th century. \n\n\n\nContrasting this is the ethereal fluidity of two of Vaughan Williams’ loveliest works. His 1906 setting of Walt Whitman’s poem Toward the Unknown Region is a hidden gem with two very imposing climaxes\, while the famous The Lark Ascending is timeless. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\n£15.00 – £30.00 \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nSunday 29 June 2025 at 7.30pm \n\n\n\nDoors open at 6.30pm \n\n\n\nRunning time: \n\n\n\n2 hours \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Sheldonian Theatre\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nHome to ceremonial occasions and a raft of exciting events\, the magnificent and versatile Sheldonian Theatre is the focal point of the University of Oxford and is a unique space to experience live music. \n\n\n\nTo see an interactive map of the theatre\, click here. \n\n\n\nFind out more about the Sheldonian Theatre\, including facilities\, access and venue information.
