Most people thought that the 2024 performance was Steve’s best ever Friars show. \n\n\n\nFriars was closely involved with Genesis throughout their early career\, their first Friars appearance being in 1970 when they were paid the princely sum of £10 for two 45-minute sets. \n\n\n\nIn 1972\, Friars thought the band was in danger of splitting up\, so a special Genesis Convention gig was organised at Watford Town Hall in June of that year to celebrate how good they were and to attract some press attention. It worked\, and Genesis eventually went on to be one of the biggest bands in the world. \n\n\n\nGenesis’ Mike Rutherford said in 2021 that if it wasn’t for Friars\, the band may well have split up at that time. In 2022\, David Stopps presented Steve Hackett with the FA Cup (the Friars Aylesbury Cup). \n\n\n\nSteve Hackett – Best of Genesis & Solo Gems\n\n\n\nSteve Hackett’s timeless guitar work was woven throughout Genesis’ classic 70’s catalogue of albums. In recent years\, he and his outstanding touring line-up of Nad Sylvan (vocals)\, Jonas Reingold (bass\, backing vocals)\, Rob Townsend (saxophone\, flutes\, additional keyboards)\, Roger King (keyboards) and Craig Blundell (drums and percussion) have brought many of these albums back to great acclaim. \n\n\n\nFor the 2026 tour\, there will be two changes to the band. Lalle Larsson has taken over on keyboards from Roger and Felix Lehrmann will take over from Craig on drums. \n\n\n\nSays Steve: “I’m really looking forward to returning to Aylesbury in 2026.” \n\n\n\nSteve Hackett joined Genesis at the beginning of 1971 and first played Friars Aylesbury in June 1971. He quickly gained an international reputation as the guitarist in the band’s classic line up alongside Peter Gabriel\, Tony Banks\, Mike Rutherford and Phil Collins. \n\n\n\nSteve’s intricate guitar work was a key element of Genesis albums from Nursery Cryme (1971) to Wind And Wuthering (1977)\, including the classic Selling England By The Pound. \n\n\n\nAfter leaving Genesis at the end of 1977\, Steve’s solo career\, which now spans more than 30 albums\, has demonstrated his extraordinary versatility with both electric and acoustic guitar.  \n\n\n\nSteve is renowned as both an immensely talented and innovative rock musician and a virtuoso classical guitarist and composer and this was recognised in 2010 when he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. He has also worked alongside Steve Howe of YES in the supergroup GTR. \n\n\n\nHackett’s compositions take influences from many genres\, including jazz\, classical and blues. For his studio works\, The Night Siren (2017) and At The Edge Of Light (2019)\, Hackett explored the influences of world music. \n\n\n\nRecent tours have seen Hackett celebrate his time with Genesis\, including a spectacular 2018 tour in which he realised a long-held ambition to perform the works of Genesis live with his band and an orchestra. \n\n\n\nThe lockdown enforced by the 2020 global pandemic proved to be a particularly creative period for Hackett. A celebration of women’s voices\, both as singers and composers\, the album received five stars from BBC Music Magazine\, who also named it one of their ’13 best classical albums of 2024’. \n\n\n\nImogen Holst’s characterful Keats setting Welcome Joy and Welcome Sorrow opens the programme\, before a set of beautiful works by living composers Judith Weir\, Olivia Sparkhall and Hilary Campbell\, all commissioned by Multitude of Voyces to mark International Women’s Day in 2019. \n\n\n\nThen comes Elizabeth Poston’s remarkable An English Day-Book\, a cycle of eleven short movements charting the course of a day in the English countryside\, packed with strikingly vivid depictions of bells\, clocks\, songbirds\, owls\, and a mischievous bumblebee. \n\n\n\nThe second half is where things get festive\, opening with a selection of a cappella Christmas pieces by Elizabeth Poston\, Howard Skempton and Peter Maxwell Davies\, as well as the medieval carol Ther is no rose of swych vertu. The first theatre was built in 1836\, and a second in 1886. In 1934\, the third New Theatre opened. \n\n\n\nThe theatre has been owned by several different companies and undergone several name changes. It is now owned by the Ambassador Theatre Group and hosts everything from ballet and opera to musicals. \n\n\n\nOn performance days\, the Box Office opens at noon and closes 15 minutes after the show starts. If there is a performance on a Sunday or Bank Holiday\, Box Office will open 2 hours before the show begins and close 15 minutes after the show starts. \n\n\n\nThere is a large air-conditioned bar with seating located below the Stalls Foyer\, two further bars in the Circle Foyer and an additional one at the back of the balcony. All stocked with an array of drinks and snacks. \n\n\n\nThere is a cloakroom located in the stalls bar. If this is closed\, please speak to a member of staff. £1 per item.
