SUMMARY:Didcot Railway Centre Steam Days
DESCRIPTION:Didcot Railway Centre Steam Days\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Didcot Railway Centre Steam Days\n\n\n\nTravel back in time to the golden age of the Great Western Railway and savour the sights\, sounds and smells of steam as you explore this 21-acre living museum with trains dating from Victorian times to the 1960s. \n\n\n\nSteam trains will operate on at least one of the centre’s two demonstration lines\, allowing you to take unlimited rides. On many days\, the second line will be running too and may feature a pioneering diesel railcar\, a heritage diesel locomotive or a small branchline steam engine. Check the Locomotive Roster to see what will be running on the date of your visit. \n\n\n\n\nStroll around the 1932 Engine Shed housing our unique collection of operational and cosmetically-restored locomotives. Find 5900 Hinderton Hall\, climb onto the footplate and listen to Archie\, the driver\, and Stan\, the fireman\, prepare their loco! Listen out for the sounds of a working engine shed and see if you can hear Stan fetch his supplies from Jonah\, the storeman.\n\n\n\nVisit the carriage and wagon display of restored rolling stock from Victorian times to the 1940s\, including the VIP Saloon reputed to have been used by General Eisenhower during the preparations for D-Day and later used in the GWR Royal Train\, and our restoration workshops\n\n\n\nMarvel at Brunel’s Broad Gauge railway\, locomotives\, coaches and transfer shed and don’t miss a section of his not entirely successful ‘Atmospheric Railway’\n\n\n\nGet hands-on in The Signalling Centre where you can find out how trains have been controlled through the ages.  The Swindon Panel is demonstrated on certain specified dates.\n\n\n\nDescend into a shelter built to keep Didcot’s enginemen safe in WWII and experience an air raid\n\n\n\nImmerse yourself in the huge and varied collection of fascinating\, smaller items in the Museum. \n\n\n\nDiscover some GWR road vehicles in the Road Transport Hangar.\n\n\n\n\nChildren can also make tracks to the outdoor play area or dress up as a station master. You can relax over lunch or enjoy a snack in the refreshment rooms\, and don’t forget to pick up a souvenir in the gift shop. The modern trains running past the centre complete the picture and mean you can experience over 180 years of railway progress in just one day. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nAdmission for 2 people with Tea & Cake – £48.00 (£53.00 with Gift Aid) \n\n\n\nAdult Admission – £18.50 (£20.50 with Gift Aid)Senior Admission (65+) – £16.50 (£19.00 with Gift Aid)Child Admission (3 to 15) – £11.00 (£13.00 with Gift Aid)                  Child Under 3 Admission – Free \n\n\n\nFamily of 4 Admission (2 Adults and 2 Children) – £55.00 (£61.00 with Gift Aid)Family of 5 Admission (2 Adults and 3 Children) – £65.00 (£72.00 with Gift Aid)                  Carer Admission – £0.00Visitors may be asked to provide reasonable proof of carer status on the day of arrival. \n\n\n\nAdmission prices are inclusive of all regular attractions including free train rides on running days. \n\n\n\nChild prices apply to children aged 3 to 15 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGood to know\n\n\n\n\nDidcot Railway Centre will be open at 10.30am\, with the last entries at 2.30pm.\n\n\n\nYou are welcome to stay until close at 4.00pm.\n\n\n\nPlease have your original e-ticket ready to show the staff. \n\n\n\nPlease also bring your membership card if you’re a member or your carer’s ID if you have booked a carer’s ticket.\n\n\n\nOn arrival at Didcot Parkway Station\, please show your ticket to GWR staff\, who will let you through the barrier. SUMMARY:Manja Scott & Jeff Clarke: Creative Contrasts
DESCRIPTION:Manja Scott & Jeff Clarke: Creative Contrasts\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Manja Scott & Jeff Clarke: Creative Contrasts\n\n\n\nThis exhibition celebrates a long friendship between two artists who have contrasting styles but warmly appreciate each other’s visual language. \n\n\n\nManja Scott was born in Zagreb\, Croatia\, but lived more than a third of her adult life in Africa – Ethiopia\, Zambia\, Kenya. She came to live in the UK in 1982. With the exception of various courses in Combined Arts\, Printed Textiles\, Print Making\, she is self-taught. Her most important influences are twentieth-century art\, tribal world cultures\, and the amazing\, ever-changing beauty of nature. \n\n\n\nJeff Clarke trained through the 1950s at the Brighton College of Art and in Italy with a Prix de Rome scholarship in engraving. Later\, he etched and painted regularly in Crete alongside the role of draughtsman to the British School of Archaeology until 1996. The regular periods of vibrant sunlight had a profound effect on his work in colour\, tone and line. \n\n\n\nFor this exhibition\, both artists show a considered selection of retrospective and recent work. Manja with essentially coloured abstracts; Jeff with observed drawings in black and white\, mostly of still life and close environment. \n\n\n\nExhibition Opening \n\n\n\nWednesday 06 May from 6.00pm to 8.00pm \n\n\n\nPlease join in for drinks to celebrate the opening of this exhibition. \n\n\n\nFree event. SUMMARY:Refik Anadol: Archive Dreaming
DESCRIPTION:Refik Anadol: Archive Dreaming\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Refik Anadol: Archive Dreaming\n\n\n\nArchive Dreaming is an immersive fusion of art and machine intelligence. \n\n\n\nThe installation transforms a vast digital archive into a dream-like\, ever-evolving environment\, using AI algorithms to reimagine millions of documents in real time. \n\n\n\nAs viewers move through the space\, they are surrounded by shifting visuals\, patterns\, text\, and imagery that evoke the sensation of walking through a living\, thinking mind. \n\n\n\nCreated using Refik Anadol Studio’s Large Nature Model — a generative AI system dedicated to interpreting natural data — the work reframes archives not as static repositories\, but as dynamic\, responsive entities. \n\n\n\nThrough machine learning\, raw data becomes a poetic\, immersive experience that blurs the boundaries between human memory and artificial intelligence. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\n\nOpen daily from 10.00am to 5.00pm.\n\n\n\nClosed until 12.30 pm on Thursday 28 May.\n\n\n\nNo booking required.\n\n\n\n\nLocation: \n\n\n\nWhite Box \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nSchwarzman Centre for the Humanities is a major new cultural and academic landmark for the University of Oxford\, bringing together seven humanities faculties with performance\, exhibition\, and public engagement spaces under one roof. SUMMARY:Mary Knowland: Lines of Enquiry
DESCRIPTION:Mary Knowland: Lines of Enquiry\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Mary Knowland: Lines of Enquiry\n\n\n\nMary Knowland grew up surrounded by art; her father was a painter\, however\, her initial training was in ceramics with Robin Welch and then at Harrow School of Art. After many years exhibiting and selling\, she returned\, via a course in textiles\, to her drawing and painting roots but has more recently included ceramics in her practice. \n\n\n\nThis collection of work offers us insights into her process of enquiry through line and a variety of media\, working with the human form\, the rhythms of the coast\, the simplicity of everyday objects and natural forms. \n\n\n\nTwo approaches to making drawings and paintings will be apparent. Consciously controlled mark-making and brush strokes verging on the abstract sit alongside a much freer approach where she is not looking at the subject while the work is in progress\, yet capturing the essence of the subject. \n\n\n\nDevelopment of an idea can be seen across a series of drawings where line also directly connects to the ceramics and\, in its various forms\, line is present throughout the exhibition. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFree entry \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nTuesday 31 March to Sunday 19 April 2026 \n\n\n\nExhibition Opening \n\n\n\nTuesday 31 March from 6.00pm to 8.00pm \n\n\n\nPlease join for drinks to celebrate the opening of this exhibition \n\n\n\nFree event. SUMMARY:Camera Club: Spring 2026 Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Camera Club: Spring 2026 Exhibition\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Camera Club: Spring 2026 Exhibition\n\n\n\nCamera Club is part of The North Wall’s YouthLab programme\, which supports young people aged 12 to 17 in developing their creative skills alongside professional artists. \n\n\n\nEvery year a group of 6 to 8 aspiring photographers works with artist Elina Medley to create images using digital SLR cameras and then to curate an exhibition of photography. \n\n\n\nLast summer they worked in the studio as well as the streets and parks of Oxford to experiment with different subject matter and approaches to image-making. Over four days they built on their technical and creative skills and discovered the subjects they love to photograph. \n\n\n\nDuring the October half-term\, they immersed themselves in several exhibitions of photography and learnt so much about how to curate their own exhibition. \n\n\n\nThe group are looking forward to one more day of planning in February before they install their group exhibition in the Spring. Come along and meet our latest cohort of wonderful photographers; they will be staffing the gallery during the show. \n\n\n\nThis exhibition takes place at Magdalen Road Studios. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFree entry \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nSaturday 28 March to Thursday 02 April 2026 at 11.00am \n\n\n\nRunning time: \n\n\n\n4 hours \n\n\n\nLocation: \n\n\n\nMagdalen Road Studios

SUMMARY:Foraging Connections
DESCRIPTION:Foraging Connections\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Foraging Connections\n\n\n\nForaging Connections is a collaborative exhibition blending art\, science\, nature and community. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition displays a collection of work created using foraged plants\, transformed through ancient techniques such as cordage and weaving\, to reflect the raw beauty and cyclical nature of the natural world\, that is both ephemeral and enduring. \n\n\n\nSince spring 2025\, artists Lilli Tranborg and Arbie Edward have been working with children from local charity\, Children Heard And Seen\, at both Modern Art Oxford and Wytham Woods. \n\n\n\nExploring the theme of connectedness\, to both each other and nature\, the workshops have encouraged a tactile engagement with natural materials in the spirit of innovation\, inclusion and growth\, and with a focus on the importance of trees and forests. \n\n\n\nDuring these workshops\, a sculpture in Wytham Woods has been repurposed\, to reflect on themes of refuge and repair\, and will forge a connection between the woods and the gallery space at Modern Art Oxford. \n\n\n\nThe workshops delivered in the run up to this exhibition were a partnership with IF Oxford and Oxford North\, and formed part of Oxford North’s Engage Programme. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Modern Art Oxford\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nModern Art Oxford is one of the UK’s leading contemporary art spaces. At the heart of the gallery’s programme is a commitment to education\, internationalism and inclusion\, founded on the power of visual art and culture to enact positive social change. \n\n\n\nIt offers educational experiences for visitors of all ages\, using art and creativity to reach thousands of people from Oxfordshire and beyond every year. These participatory activities are designed to help visitors explore our exhibitions\, experiment with creative processes and celebrate the relevance of contemporary visual culture to society today. \n\n\n\nModern Art Oxford was founded in 1965\, and has a rich history of bold and progressive programming that promotes diversity and internationalism\, encourages public engagement with creativity and the arts\, and celebrates the importance of contemporary visual culture in today’s society. \n\n\n\nDiscover more about Modern Art Oxford

SUMMARY:St Edward’s School Art Teachers: Circa 500
DESCRIPTION:St Edward’s School Art Teachers: Circa 500\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout St Edward’s School Art Teachers: Circa 500\n\n\n\nCirca 500 is composed of eleven artists who spend their days teaching\, questioning\, and building alongside the next generation of artists at St Edward’s School. \n\n\n\nThis exhibition turns that practice inward\, revealing the breadth of disciplines that animate their department: ceramics\, sculpture\, textiles\, painting\, print\, photography\, graphics\, and film. \n\n\n\nWhat connects them is not a single medium but a shared curiosity. Clay and thread\, paint and colour\, lens and screen\, ink and object each hold their own language. Together\, they create a conversation about process\, experiment\, and the shifting roles they inhabit as educators and artists. \n\n\n\nThe works on display emerge from the overlap of classroom and studio\, from the restless space between guiding others and pursuing individual investigations. They are presented not as finished answers but as open propositions\, fragments of dialogue\, and invitations to look closer. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFree entry \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nWednesday 11 to Friday 27 March 2026 at 7.30pm \n\n\n\nExhibition Opening: \n\n\n\nThursday 12 March 5.00pm to 7.00pm \n\n\n\nPlease join in for drinks to celebrate the opening of this exhibition \n\n\n\nFree event / no booking required \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The North Wall Arts Centre\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nThe North Wall Arts Centre is an an award-winning theatre\, gallery and performing arts centre located in Summertown\, North Oxford. SUMMARY:The Drawing Project
DESCRIPTION:The Drawing Project\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Drawing Project\n\n\n\nThe Drawing Project is a collaborative work involving sixteen artists and two paintings from the Ashmolean Museum: The Forest Fire by Piero di Cosimo and The Exposition of Moses by Nicholas Poussin. The aim was to produce drawings that worked collectively as well as individually. \n\n\n\nThe artists produced drawings which were then assembled to become full-scale representations of the original paintings. The four assembled collaborative representations are made of fifteen individually drawn sections. Each artist produced their drawings to scale using a variety of drawing and painting media\, with some also working in collage. \n\n\n\nDuring eight months\, over sixty individual project drawings were produced and then assembled into four large drawings representing the original paintings. \n\n\n\nThe finished assembled works are 1:1 representations of the original paintings; two in colour and two in black and white. Some of the artists have also produced additional work referencing the original paintings. \n\n\n\nAt the Ashmolean Museum\, there’s a wonderful opportunity for both families and adults to attend a workshop inspired by the exhibition. SUMMARY:Peter Rhoades & Emma Baldwin: Hand to Eye
DESCRIPTION:Peter Rhoades & Emma Baldwin: Hand to Eye\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Peter Rhoades & Emma Baldwin: Hand to Eye\n\n\n\nPeter Rhoades’s works in this exhibition date from the 1970s and 80s\, a time of both personal and historical change and tension. Only a few of these paintings and drawings have been shown before. \n\n\n\nPeter returned to making images direct from visual observation\, having spent the 1960s primarily involved with various kinds of abstraction. In doing so\, he was reviving his Ruskinian roots initially nurtured by his father and Percy Horton at the Ruskin School of Art. \n\n\n\nThe drawings and a few of the paintings also represent his ongoing concern with European figure composition. \n\n\n\nPeter is an artist and teacher/lecturer working in painting\, drawing and printmaking. Much of his teaching career has been at Oxford University as both a tutor at the Ruskin School of Art and Christ Church College. \n\n\n\nPeter was also a lecturer at Abingdon & Witney College\, working for many years on the prestigious Foundation Visual Arts course with his co-exhibitor Emma Baldwin. \n\n\n\nEmma Baldwin is a potter who\, after thirty years at Abingdon and Witney College\, is making wheel-thrown vessels full-time. Emma enjoys making both functional and sculptural forms inspired by both contemporary and historical sources. \n\n\n\nShe is primarily drawn to ceramics as an object\, fascinated by the line between what makes something functional or a work of art. Emma finds the entire process of transforming Earth into an object of beauty completely engrossing. \n\n\n\nEmma was first introduced to clay at school\, aged 14\, and has been working with it on and off ever since. Emma studied ceramics at Bristol Polytechnic in 1992\, where she had the privilege to be taught by both Walter Keeler and Mo Jupp – two truly inspiring potters. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFree entry \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nWednesday 21 January to Saturday 07 February 2026 \n\n\n\nMonday to Saturday from 10.00am to 4.00pm \n\n\n\nClosed on Sunday and Bank Holiday \n\n\n\nRunning time: \n\n\n\n1 hour\, without an interval \n\n\n\nGood to know: \n\n\n\nExhibition Opening on Thursday 22 January from 6.00pm to 8.00pm \n\n\n\nPlease join for drinks to celebrate the opening of this exhibition \n\n\n\nFree event. SUMMARY:Sofia Wierkus & Violette Baransi: Through the Fence
DESCRIPTION:Sofia Wierkus & Violette Baransi: Through the Fence\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Sofia Wierkus & Violette Baransi: Through the Fence\n\n\n\nIsraeli artist Sofia Wierkus and Palestinian artist Violette Baransi have spent the past two years working in collaboration\, exploring the complex realities of life on both sides of the fence. \n\n\n\nThrough their shared experience\, the young artists have created a powerful body of work that responds to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East—without taking sides or making explicit political statements. \n\n\n\nThe artists’ creative journey has been shaped by the events of October 7\, a pivotal moment in both artists’ work. Their response to these events and the broader realities of war unfold through a variety of media\, with a particular emphasis on printmaking. Each piece speaks to the destruction\, trauma\, and human cost of conflict on both sides of the divide. \n\n\n\nThis exhibition showcases a mix of individual and collaborative works\, where the artists process the ongoing conflict in a deeply personal yet shared artistic language. \n\n\n\nThis includes a short film documenting an ongoing community engagement youth initiative in Israel-Palestine. Through their art\, Wierkus and Baransi invite viewers to witness the impact of war without simplifying it into partisan narratives\, offering a poignant reflection on the human experience at the heart of the ongoing crisis. \n\n\n\nThrough the Fence is more than an art exhibition; it is an exploration of our shared humanity. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFree entry. SUMMARY:The Camera Helps: A Definitive Retrospective of the Work of Paddy Summerfield
DESCRIPTION:The Camera Helps: A Definitive Retrospective of the Work of Paddy Summerfield\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Camera Helps: A Definitive Retrospective of the Work of Paddy Summerfield\n\n\n\nPaddy Summerfield (1947–2024) was a photographer who developed a new psychological vision of photography\, turning the camera on the innermost workings of the human mind and heart. \n\n\n\nDespite an ongoing battle with bipolar disorder\, leading the photographer to continue living with his parents in Oxford\, Summerfield rose to prominence in the 1980s. Later\, his five critically acclaimed publications depicted Summerfield’s most intense and enduring photographic obsessions: desire and alienation. \n\n\n\nThis substantial retrospective of the photographer’s work shows the stages of Summerfield’s creative evolution through comprehensive installations inspired by his five major publications as well as other significant bodies of work. \n\n\n\nHighlights on display include: \n\n\n\n\nThe Oxford Pictures 1968-78\, a series capturing students during the summer term at Oxford. Close in age but feeling like an outsider\, Summerfield found a shared sense of loneliness in his subjects. Though set beside rivers\, college lawns\, and Oxford streets\, the images evoke the insecurities of youth\, including longing\, isolation\, and sexual anxiety\, with solitary figures reflecting his own experience.\n\n\n\nTony Lights Up (2016)\, an unpublished short photo-essay and portrait of ‘Tony’\, a familiar figure at the time to local people\, living in sheltered accommodation. Summerfield accompanied Tony on his daily routine of asking for small change\, laughing at the world around him\, and betting on dogs – portraying his pleasure in the quiet satisfaction of lighting a cigarette.\n\n\n\nMother and Father (Dewi Lewis Publishing\, 2014)\, a moving and poignant journal of the final years of his parents’ sixty-year marriage. From 1997 to 2007\, Summerfield documented his mother’s worsening Alzheimer’s and his father’s unceasing dedication to caring for her.\n\n\n\n\nThe exhibition also offers a glimpse of both the physicality and mastery of Summerfield’s unique and idiosyncratic relationship with the craft of photographic print making. \n\n\n\nThis exhibition is part of Photo Oxford. \n\n\n\nA small display – Paddy Summerfield: Order out of chaos – will be open from the end of August until 30 November in Blackwall Hall. It previews Summerfield’s working process and serves as a forerunner to the full exhibition. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\n Free admission\, no ticket required \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nSaturday 11 October to Sunday 30 November 2025  \n\n\n\nMonday to Saturday from 10.00am to 5.00pmSunday from 11.00am to 4.00pm \n\n\n\nLocation: \n\n\n\nBlackwell Hall\, Weston Library
