SUMMARY:The Camera Helps: A Definitive Retrospective of the Work of Paddy Summerfield
DESCRIPTION:The Camera Helps: A Definitive Retrospective of the Work of Paddy Summerfield\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Camera Helps: A Definitive Retrospective of the Work of Paddy Summerfield\n\n\n\nPaddy Summerfield (1947–2024) was a photographer who developed a new psychological vision of photography\, turning the camera on the innermost workings of the human mind and heart. \n\n\n\nDespite an ongoing battle with bipolar disorder\, leading the photographer to continue living with his parents in Oxford\, Summerfield rose to prominence in the 1980s. Later\, his five critically acclaimed publications depicted Summerfield’s most intense and enduring photographic obsessions: desire and alienation. \n\n\n\nThis substantial retrospective of the photographer’s work shows the stages of Summerfield’s creative evolution through comprehensive installations inspired by his five major publications as well as other significant bodies of work. \n\n\n\nHighlights on display include: \n\n\n\n\nThe Oxford Pictures 1968-78\, a series capturing students during the summer term at Oxford. Close in age but feeling like an outsider\, Summerfield found a shared sense of loneliness in his subjects. Though set beside rivers\, college lawns\, and Oxford streets\, the images evoke the insecurities of youth\, including longing\, isolation\, and sexual anxiety\, with solitary figures reflecting his own experience.\n\n\n\nTony Lights Up (2016)\, an unpublished short photo-essay and portrait of ‘Tony’\, a familiar figure at the time to local people\, living in sheltered accommodation. Summerfield accompanied Tony on his daily routine of asking for small change\, laughing at the world around him\, and betting on dogs – portraying his pleasure in the quiet satisfaction of lighting a cigarette.\n\n\n\nMother and Father (Dewi Lewis Publishing\, 2014)\, a moving and poignant journal of the final years of his parents’ sixty-year marriage. From 1997 to 2007\, Summerfield documented his mother’s worsening Alzheimer’s and his father’s unceasing dedication to caring for her.\n\n\n\n\nThe exhibition also offers a glimpse of both the physicality and mastery of Summerfield’s unique and idiosyncratic relationship with the craft of photographic print making. \n\n\n\nThis exhibition is part of Photo Oxford. \n\n\n\nA small display – Paddy Summerfield: Order out of chaos – will be open from the end of August until 30 November in Blackwall Hall. It previews Summerfield’s working process and serves as a forerunner to the full exhibition. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\n Free admission\, no ticket required \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nSaturday 11 October to Sunday 30 November 2025  \n\n\n\nMonday to Saturday from 10.00am to 5.00pmSunday from 11.00am to 4.00pm \n\n\n\nLocation: \n\n\n\nBlackwell Hall\, Weston Library

SUMMARY:Remembrances of War: Paul Joyce Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Remembrances of War \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Remembrances of War: Paul Joyce Exhibition\n\n\n\nThe Soldiers of Oxfordshire Museum presents Remembrances of War\, an evocative exhibition of paintings by artist Paul Joyce. \n\n\n\nBorn in 1940 under the shadow of the Second World War\, Joyce draws on personal childhood memories of bomb-scarred London as well as the wider cultural memory of a world devastated by conflict. \n\n\n\nBile of Beans\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe collection juxtaposes scenes of smouldering rubble in South London with imagined depictions of Hiroshima and the destruction across Europe. \n\n\n\nEveryday objects such as Bovril and baked beans appear alongside military aircraft and apocalyptic landscapes\, reflecting the absurd collision of the ordinary and the catastrophic during wartime. \n\n\n\nDown!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInfluenced by artists such as Paul Nash and Eric Ravilious\, Joyce’s works combine pastoral scenes with striking\, militarised elements. Devoid of human figures\, the paintings instead speak through objects\, buildings\, and machines—haunting reminders of the people whose lives were shaped by war. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition is enriched by artefacts from the museum’s collection\, offering further insight into how ordinary people endured and adapted to extraordinary times. Visitors of all ages are welcome\, with interactive features including a reconstructed 1940s bedroom and creative activities for children. \n\n\n\nBattle of Britain\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEntry to Remembrances of War also includes access to the museum’s wider galleries\, from immersive First and Second World War experiences to the temporary exhibition Life Lines\, which explores the liberation of Bergen-Belsen through community art projects centred on acts of kindness. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices (with Gift Aid): \n\n\n\n\nAdults – £8.00\n\n\n\nConcessions (Armed Forces\, Over 60s\, Students) – £7.00\n\n\n\nChildren (5-16) – £4.50\n\n\n\nFamily tickets and group offers also available.\n\n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nSaturday 13 September to Tuesday 18 November 2025 \n\n\n\nTuesday to Saturday from 11.00am to 5.00pm \n\n\n\nSunday from 2.00pm to 5.00pm \n\n\n\nGood to know: \n\n\n\nPhone and email for general enquiries & event tickets – 01993 810 211\, frontofhouse@sofo.org.uk

SUMMARY:Call and Response
DESCRIPTION:Call and Response\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Call and Response\n\n\n\nCall and Response brings together two Oxford-based arts organisations dedicated to fostering connection\, skill-sharing\, and professional development. Artists from the Warehouse Art School and Art-Sauce present an exhibition in two parts to exchange ideas and creative practice.  \n\n\n\nPart one (02 – 12 July) presents the culmination of a year of enquiry\, experimentation\, and personal growth by eight artists from the Warehouse Art School Continuing Creative Practice course.  \n\n\n\nPart two (17 July – 09 August) furthers the conversation with artists from Art-Sauce\, who have engaged in a collaborative process to draw direct inspiration from each other to encompass the theme of Call and Response.  \n\n\n\nThe exhibition takes its name from the principle of dialogue—between artists and their peers\, between organizations that share a commitment to artistic growth\, and between the work and its audience. Just as call and response is a form of exchange\, this exhibition invites the public into a wider conversation: to engage and bring their own perspectives into the creative process.   \n\n\n\nDrawing inspiration from supportive communities of practice\, Call and Response invites dialogue—between individuals\, disciplines\, and experiences—to enrich and sustain creative development.  \n\n\n\nSpecial Events \n\n\n\nPart One: Warehouse Art School \n\n\n\nOfficial Opening Party: \n\n\n\nWednesday 02 July 6.00pm – 8.00pm \n\n\n\nMeet the Artists\, followed by a performance by the Feisty Choir: \n\n\n\nWednesday 09 July 6.30pm – 8.00pm \n\n\n\nPart Two: art-sauce \n\n\n\nOfficial Opening Party: \n\n\n\nSaturday 19 July 6.00pm – 8.00pm \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFree entry. SUMMARY:Abingdon Air and Country Show 2025
DESCRIPTION:Abingdon Air and Country Show\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Abingdon Air and Country Show 2025\n\n\n\nThe Abingdon Air and Country Show 2025 will take place at Abingdon Airfield / Dalton Barracks on Saturday\, 14 June 2025. From dynamic flying displays to arts and crafts stalls\, the show will have something for everybody. \n\n\n\nThere’ll be aerobatic displays from warbirds and biplanes to modern-day jets. And plenty to see on the ground\, too – from static aircraft displays and cockpits to sit inside to a great mix of stalls\, classic vehicle displays\, and country fayre traditions and craftsmanship. \n\n\n\nThe Abingdon Air and Country Show began in 2000 as a local fete organised by Neil Porter\, a landscape gardener by trade. It was created with the desire to put something back into the community and provide a family day out at an affordable price. \n\n\n\nThe event barely broke even\, but through perseverance\, the show has grown steadily into one of the sizeable annual events in the area and a highlight on the airshow calendar. \n\n\n\nUnlike many UK airshows\, everyone involved in the show’s organisation is a volunteer. And over the past 20+ years\, they’ve been able to donate generously to the Thames Valley Air Ambulance\, Douglas House Respite Centre\, and many other local charities. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat’s on\n\n\n\nFlying & Static displays: The Titans Display Team\, Hurricane I\, Gazelle Squadron\, Westland Scout AH.1\, Rich Goodwin\, Auster AOP.6\, P-51 (CAC CA-18 Mk.21)\, Jet Provost T.5\, RAF Falcons\, RAF BBMF\, Harvard\, RAF C-17 TBC\, RAF Tutor T.1\, SARO Skeeter\, T-6G Texan and Boeing B-17. \n\n\n\nOn the ground\, there will also be the Steam Engines\, Rescue Huskies\, Craft Tent\, Punch and Judy\, Radio Day Big Band\, Hebborns Amusements\, displays of classic and ex-military vehicles\, various trade and craft stalls. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nAdvance Tickets (1st February 2025 to 23:59hrs 13th June 2025 only)Adult (16 years & over) – £20.00Senior citizens (65+) – £10.00Children 5 to 15 years – £7.00Under 5s – free \n\n\n\nOn the day Tickets (can be purchased online or cash only at the gates)Adult (16 years & over) – £25.00Senior citizens (65+) – £15.00Children 5 to 15 years – £8.00Under 5s – free \n\n\n\nNo credit card machines are onsite on the day. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGetting there\n\n\n\nThe easiest way to reach the Abingdon Air & Country Show is by car – please follow the map and postcode directions as instructed on your ticket to the correct gates. \n\n\n\nDriving to the event: Your e-ticket will provide you with a map and postcode to find your way and with entry times. \n\n\n\nPedestrian (Walkers & Cyclists) Gate: For local people who would rather walk to this side gate\, located on Faringdon Road\, with Elm Tree Walk to your left prior to reaching the gates to enter the airfield. SUMMARY:Isabel Fishlock: Dreamlands
DESCRIPTION:Isabel Fishlock: Dreamlands\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Isabel Fishlock: Dreamlands\n\n\n\nIsabel Fishlock’s latest exhibition\, Dreamlands\, is a vibrant showcase of new works that captivate the viewer with their bold energy and dreamlike quality. The collection features a stunning range of paintings\, varying in scale\, that draw you into a world brimming with colour. Isabel’s use of colour is striking—each piece bursts with tones that shift and dance across the canvas. The landscapes she creates are ethereal\, almost otherworldly\, transporting the viewer to tranquil yet surreal spaces.  \n\n\n\nBold graphic florals are at the heart of the exhibition\, their striking patterns and vibrant palettes commanding attention. These works are full of life\, bringing a sense of freshness and vitality to the space.  \n\n\n\nThis marks Isabel’s first exhibition in Oxford\, following her sold-out show in London. A graduate of Central Saint Martins School of Art\, Isabel spent 10 years painting and designing prints for leading luxury fashion brands including Dior and Paul Smith before focusing on her fine art career. \n\n\n\nFor the past five years\, she has dedicated herself to painting\, now bringing her distinctive vision to Oxford with works that exist in a world just beyond our own\, where reality blurs and colour takes centre stage. This exhibition is a true celebration of colour and form.   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFree entry. SUMMARY:Bill Prosser & Sarah Blair: Inside Out
DESCRIPTION:Bill Prosser & Sarah Blair: Inside Out\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Bill Prosser & Sarah Blair: Inside Out\n\n\n\nAn exhibition of drawings\, book pieces\, prints\, and poster poems\, relating in different ways to the notions of outside and in. \n\n\n\nOutside \n\n\n\nSarah Blair specialises in text-image works. Her series of poster poems on the theme of weather invites conversation around our changing climate and any accompanying shifts in our consciousness. \n\n\n\nThis project responds to archival ‘weather diaries’ of the 18th and 19th centuries\, when weather-watching was also becoming something of a fashionable national pastime. Amateur enthusiasts were reaching for barometers and thermometers on verandas and in bedrooms\, confecting a new type of language to pin down observations and hunches. \n\n\n\nThe work featured in this show focuses on the year 1824-25\, precisely 200 years ago. \n\n\n\nInside \n\n\n\nAfter fifty years of trying\, Bill Prosser is still making matter-of-fact drawings about things that don’t matter. \n\n\n\nTalk and tea with the artist Sarah  Blair \n\n\n\n17 May 2.00pm – 3.00pm \n\n\n\nJoin Sarah for a slice of cake and a tour of the exhibition. \n\n\n\nFree Entry / Booking Required \n\n\n\nIn Conversation: Bill Prosser & Sarah  Blair \n\n\n\nThursday 29 May 6.00pm – 7.30pm \n\n\n\nJoin us for drinks at 6.00pm for a 6.30pm start. \n\n\n\nFree Entry / Booking Required \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFree entry \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nWednesday 14 to Saturday 31 May 2025 \n\n\n\nOpening hours: Monday to Saturday at 10.00am – 4.00pm \n\n\n\nClosed: Sunday and Bank Holidays \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The North Wall Arts Centre\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nThe North Wall Arts Centre is an an award-winning theatre\, gallery and performing arts centre located in Summertown\, North Oxford.
