SUMMARY:Images of Authority: Portraits Between Iran and Europe
DESCRIPTION:Images of Authority: Portraits Between Iran and Europe\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Images of Authority: Portraits Between Iran and Europe\n\n\n\nThis free exhibition examines the power of portraits in shaping the image of three contemporaneous rulers: Fath Ali Shah Qajar (1797–1834)\, King George III (1760–1820)\, and Napoleon Bonaparte (1799–1814)\, offering a fascinating reflection on the role of imagery in both personal and political life. \n\n\n\nJuxtaposing works on different media from Iran\, Britain\, and France\, the display reveals the strategies these leaders and their image-makers used to convey authority\, ambition\, and personality. \n\n\n\nFor the first time in over a century\, the exhibition also presents two recently restored Qajar paintings\, alongside insights from their conservation discoveries. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking informatio\n\n\n\nPrices: \n\n\n\nFree \n\n\n\nLocation: \n\n\n\nGallery 29 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSelected artworks on display\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Seated Portrait of Fath Ali Shah of Iran retouched & conserved\, about 1798\, oil on canvas © Ashmolean Museum\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Portrait of a setar player\, 1797–1798. Chan Painting\, Lui Shou-Kwan\, 1969.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Cheung Yee and his 1960s Hong Kong Contemporaries\n\n\n\nThis exhibition showcases newly-acquired works for the Ashmolean by the Hong Kong artist Cheung Yee (1936–2019). It will be the first substantial display of his work outside Hong Kong\, including sculpture and works on paper. \n\n\n\nCheung Yee was a leading figure of innovation in the Hong Kong art scene\, especially during the 1960s\, when the city established its own identity as an artistic centre. \n\n\n\nHis work will be shown alongside those by Lui Shou-Kwan (1919–75)\, Wucius Wong (b.1936)\, Liu Kuo-sung (b.1932) and others from the avant-garde Circle Art Group. \n\n\n\nDisplayed with his peers\, the works highlight Cheung Yee’s connection with a generation of modern art pioneers from Hong Kong and Taiwan in the latter 20th century. \n\n\n\nAlthough Cheung Yee is mainly known as a sculptor\, the Ashmolean exhibition will include some outstanding examples of his experiments with works on paper. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nPrices:Admission is FREE \n\n\n\nDate and times:From 30 November 2024 to 09 November 2025 \n\n\n\nThe museum is open every day from 10.00am to 5.00pm \n\n\n\nLocation:Gallery 11\, ground floor

SUMMARY:Ashmolean NOW: Bettina von Zwehl
DESCRIPTION:Ashmolean NOW: Bettina von Zwehl\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Ashmolean NOW: Bettina von Zwehl\n\n\n\nAshmolean NOW: Bettina von Zwehl is the third in the Ashmolean NOW exhibition series\, where contemporary artists are invited to create new work inspired by the Ashmolean’s historical collections. \n\n\n\nThis exhibition features photographs by London-based artist Bettina von Zwehl (b. 1971)\, whose aim is to rekindle wonder and curiosity as critical tools for exploring new ideas and practices. \n\n\n\nDuring a residency in Oxford from 2022 to 2023\, von Zwehl spent time researching the Ashmolean’s founding collections – the wonderfully diverse objects and works of art which were displayed when the museum first opened in the 17th century. \n\n\n\nThe artist’s time at the Ashmolean served as inspiration for a unique photographic ‘Wunderkammer’ installation that moves between portraiture\, silhouetted fragments\, still-life\, monumental and miniature elements\, as well as non-art objects and specimens from natural history collections. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nPrices:Admission is FREE \n\n\n\nDate and times:From 18 October 2024 to 11 May 2025The museum is open every day from 10.00am to 5.00pm \n\n\n\nLocation:Gallery 8 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBehind-the-scenes with the artist

SUMMARY:Breaking Ground
DESCRIPTION:Breaking Ground Exhibition at Oxford University Museum of Natural History. Image: Watercolour by Mary Buckland (nee Morland)\, possibly painted in 1817\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Breaking Ground\n\n\n\nFrom the first-ever scientific description of a dinosaur to the revelation that Earth is much older than the Biblical 6\,000 years\, the 19th century saw a network of naturalists forge new ways of thinking about the history of life and our planet. \n\n\n\nBreaking Ground is a new exhibition at the Oxford University Museum of Natural History that charts these significant developments in palaeontology and geology through a cast of characters – both the celebrated and the unsung – who helped to establish new scientific methods and ideas. \n\n\n\nCentred on an Oxford couple – William Buckland\, geologist and palaeontologist\, and Mary Buckland (née Morland)\, a scientific illustrator\, it explores some of the most historically important dinosaur discoveries ever made. \n\n\n\nMarking the 200th anniversary of the first description of a dinosaur\, Breaking Ground presents fossil material from the first three dinosaurs to be scientifically named – Megalosaurus\, Iguanodon\, and Hylaeosaurus\, including the iconic jaw that started it all. \n\n\n\nAlongside these historic specimens are more than 100 other objects\, including fossils\, skeletons\, casts\, and models. There is also archival material such as lithograph prints and watercolour paintings beautifully documenting the fieldwork\, landscapes\, and discoveries made during this fertile period of early palaeontology. \n\n\n\nWhile celebrating these important scientific developments\, Breaking Ground also investigates some inequalities of the period. William and Mary Buckland were married in 1825 and worked together to lay the foundations of modern palaeontology\, though history tends to remember their contributions differently. \n\n\n\nFamiliar names from 19th-century palaeontology are typically those of powerful people associated with certain institutions and publications; lost to history are workers in other\, often colonised\, countries who dug for specimens\, lower-status miners and quarriers around the UK\, and most women\, regardless of class or wealth. \n\n\n\nThese include Mary Anning\, who\, though more recently celebrated\, faced financial struggles for most of her life and\, as a woman\, was unable to join the Geological Society of London or present her own ideas. This is despite making some of the most important fossil discoveries of the century\, several of which will be on display in the exhibition. \n\n\n\nBreaking Ground will also offer the first showcase of items from the newly acquired Buckland archive. The drawings\, prints and paintings made by Mary Buckland include those used in the description of Megalosaurus by William Buckland in 1824. \n\n\n\nAs these illustrations helped to spread understanding of extinct groups of animals and plants among the 19th-century scientific community\, they challenged any literal interpretations of the Bible. A much older planet was revealed\, one that had undergone periods of glaciation – a controversial idea at the time – and in which hyaenas once populated the caves of Britain. \n\n\n\nComplementing the exhibition is a sculptural installation by British artist Angela Palmer. Torus of Time is a visual and tactile symbol of the deep time that was being uncovered by these pioneering 19th-century palaeontologists. An elegant ring of 16 quarry stones drawn from across the United Kingdom\, the piece represents three billion years of geological time. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nPrices:Entry to the Museum is FREE and not ticketed. SUMMARY:Mohammed Sami: ‘After the Storm’
DESCRIPTION:Mohammed Sami: ‘After the Storm’ Exhibition\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Mohammed Sami: ‘After the Storm’\n\n\n\nBlenheim Art Foundation is pleased to announce a major solo exhibition by Mohammed Sami coming to Blenheim Palace. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition\, ‘After the Storm’\, will take place from Tuesday\, 09 July\, to Sunday\, 20 October\, 2024\, marking a decade of Blenheim Art Foundation’s award-winning contemporary art programme. \n\n\n\nThrough exploring retroactive memories\, his paintings capture a world shaped not just by the weight of the past but also the present\, creating scenarios that are often left to the viewer to interpret through the lens of their own experiences. \n\n\n\nAs Sami has previously written\, “Painting becomes the only medium to grasp what is not there in painting anymore”. \n\n\n\nSami’s paintings feature landscapes\, interiors and more abstracted scenes whilst always being devoid of the human figure. They blur the line between reality and artifice\, conjuring the disquieting sensation of both presence and absence. \n\n\n\nBlenheim Palace\, a gift from Queen Anne to the First Duke of Marlborough in recognition of his triumph at the Battle of Blenheim in 1704 and later the birthplace of wartime prime minister Winston Churchill\, stands as an architectural testament to military glory. \n\n\n\nPlaced within the context of Blenheim Palace and its world-renowned collection of portraiture and narrative artworks\, Sami’s enigmatic paintings challenge viewers to reconsider the didactic nature of these traditional genres. \n\n\n\nMichael Frahm\, Director of Blenheim Art Foundation\, said: “We are thrilled to bring the exceptional work of Mohammed Sami to Blenheim Palace for his major solo exhibition. \n\n\n\n“Sami’s unique visual language\, which merges the personal and historical\, the fragmented and the surreal\, is set to engage audiences in a profound dialogue with the Palace’s storied past and its impressive art collection.  \n\n\n\n“This exhibition not only celebrates a decade of contemporary art within our walls but also reaffirms our commitment to showcasing groundbreaking artists whose work resonates with the times and places they inhabit.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see below for important booking information. \n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation:Inside the Palace. \n\n\n\nTickets required:Entry is valid with an Annual or Privilege Pass or a Palace\, Park and Gardens day ticket. \n\n\n\nDogs:No dogs allowed in the Palace. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Mohammed Sami\n\n\n\nMohammed Sami was born in Baghdad in 1984\, later immigrating to Sweden in 2007\, and now lives and works in London. In 2023\, Sami’s work was the subject of a solo exhibition at Camden Art Centre\, London\, his first solo institutional exhibition in the UK\, which toured to De La Warr Pavilion\, Bexhill-on-Sea. \n\n\n\nHe has participated in group exhibitions at the Carnegie Museum of Art\, Pittsburgh (2022); Aichi Triennale (2022); the Whitechapel Gallery\, London (2022); the Hayward Gallery\, London (2021); and Towner Eastbourne (2020) and his paintings are held in many notable places such as the Tate\, London; Museum of Modern Art\, New York; and Moderna Museet\, Stockholm.

SUMMARY:OBSCURUM - a contemporary photography exhibition focused on Venice
DESCRIPTION:OBSCURUM – a contemporary photography exhibition focused on Venice\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout OBSCURUM – a contemporary photography exhibition focused on Venice.\n\n\n\nOBSCURUM is a contemporary exhibition of black and white Scandinavian photography focused on Venice by Eva Ohtonen (FIN) and Katarina Rothfjell (SWE). \n\n\n\nThe photographs\, taken over the past two years\, have been selected from the digital and analogue archives of both artists. \n\n\n\nThe deep impact of “black” fascinates and emphasizes\, while light tends to seem limitless and almost blinds. \n\n\n\nBlack and white photography represents the most essential “colours” and highlights a range of different subjects that surround us: events\, nature\, landscape\, reportage\, portrait\, and street photography. \n\n\n\nBlack and white images constitute a rhythmic composition. In our colourful and constantly moving world\, it seems even more important to the two photographers to train the human eye to observe works in monochrome. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nEvent launch and discussion \n\n\n\nOBSCURUM exhibition launch and discussion with the photographers will be held in conjunction with The Oxford Italian Association at the JdP Music Building on 13 May from 6.30pm to 8.30pm. \n\n\n\nEntrance:General admission – £5.00The Oxford Italian Association members – £2.00Students – Free.

SUMMARY:Guercino at Waddesdon: King David and the Wise Women
DESCRIPTION:Guercino at Waddesdon: King David and the Wise Women. Image: Guercino\, The Cumaean Sibyl with a Putto\, 1651© The National Gallery\, London\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Guercino at Waddesdon: King David and the Wise Women\n\n\n\nOver 350 years after they were painted\, five paintings by renowned Bolognese painter Guercino are on display together for the first time at Waddesdon in a new exhibition. \n\n\n\nThis historic exhibition spotlights one of the great painters of 17th-century Italy\, Giovanni Francesco Barbieri\, known as Guercino (1591-1666). Brought together for the first time since leaving the artist’s studio in 1651 are Waddesdon’s King David alongside two associated paintings of Sibyls from the National Gallery and another Sibyl from the Royal Collection\, painted the same year. \n\n\n\nBorn in the Italian town of Cento\, Guercino was an excellent draughtsman whose compositions were known for their originality. In his lifetime\, he created hundreds of altarpieces and paintings\, becoming one of the most sought-after Italian Baroque painters and enjoying the patronage of popes\, foreign courts\, cardinals and dukes. \n\n\n\nSee\, close-up\, Guercino’s brilliant use of paint to depict silk\, flesh\, ermine\, paper\, wood and stone while conjuring up ideas about inspiration and contemplation\, sight and foresight\, poetry and prophecy. This is an opportunity to explore how King David relates to the sibyls. \n\n\n\nAlso on display and never before seen in public is Guercino’s recently rediscovered depiction of Moses. This is one of the most important additions to Guercino’s body of work and adds to our understanding of his early maturity\, a period considered by many to be his greatest for the dynamism\, vigour and spontaneity of his painting. \n\n\n\nWhat is a Sybil? \n\n\n\nThese female prophets or seers from classical antiquity were popular subjects in the 17th century\, appealing to Baroque artists as models of female authority. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore about Guercino\n\n\n\nGuercino (Giovanni Francesco Barbieri)\, Self-Portrait\, 1630-32. Courtesy of Schoeppler Collection\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGiovanni Francesco Barbieri enjoyed a successful career spent mostly in Bologna and Rome. He acquired the nickname ‘Guercino’ (‘Little Squinter’) due to strabismus (the condition of having a squint). \n\n\n\nAccording to the biographer Carlo Cesare Malvasia\, the infant Guercino was awoken by a loud noise with such a start that he was left with his right eye permanently fixed at an angle. Whether or not this story is to be believed\, this does not appear to have impaired his vision or achievements as a painter. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFree with house and grounds admission. \n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTickets required:House and grounds admission. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Waddesdon Manor\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWaddesdon Manor is an extraordinary French Renaissance-style chateau located in Aylesbury\, Buckinghamshire\, approximately 14 miles from Bicester and 25 miles from Oxford. \n\n\n\nBuilt between 1874 and 1889 by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild\, a member of the prominent Rothschild banking family\, the manor is renowned for its opulent architecture\, exquisite interiors\, and extensive collections of art and decorative objects. \n\n\n\nSet amidst picturesque gardens and parklands\, Waddesdon Manor offers visitors a glimpse into the lavish lifestyle of the late 19th-century European aristocracy. \n\n\n\nToday\, it is managed by the Rothschild Foundation\, a family charitable trust\, on behalf of the National Trust\, which took over ownership in 1957. SUMMARY:Frieda Toranzo Jaeger: A future in the light of darkness
DESCRIPTION:Frieda Toranzo Jaeger: A future in the light of darkness\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Frieda Toranzo Jaeger: A future in the light of darkness\n\n\n\nFrieda Toranzo Jaeger’s intricately embroidered multi-panel paintings remix iconography from Western art history with indigenous techniques to subvert and challenge dominant power structures and historical narratives. \n\n\n\nToranzo Jaeger’s work uses pre-Columbian Mexican embroidery techniques to disrupt familiar motifs of well-known Western artworks as a way of proposing an existence outside of structural systems of control.  \n\n\n\nUsing recurring imagery of queer lovemaking\, lush tropical greenery and brightly coloured flora\, intermixed with symbols of corporate power – the car\, the engine\, and the spacecraft – she invites us to think critically about the potential for an alternative future beyond colonialism and hyper-capitalism. \n\n\n\nThis exhibition is the first UK solo institutional presentation of new and recent works by the Mexico City-based artist. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets

SUMMARY:Stained glass conservation exhibition at Greys Court
DESCRIPTION:Greys Court stained glass panels. Image: National Trust/John Hammond\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Stained glass conservation exhibition at Greys Court\n\n\n\nThis year\, the internationally significant stained glass panes at Greys Court have been conserved for future generations to enjoy. \n\n\n\nFollowing critical conservation work\, which has breathed new life into these precious pieces of history\, visit the new exhibition in the house to examine these stained glass panes and appreciate their intricate details. \n\n\n\nThe panels are displayed in the landing window on the stairs. They were placed in their current location after Sir Felix Brunner bought Greys Court in 1937. They were part of his grandfather’s collection of Swiss ceramics\, furniture and weaponry. \n\n\n\nThe designs are incredibly intricate and feature religious stories in both painted and stained glass. On several of the panels is the heraldic crest of a water fountain on a red background – this is the Brunner family crest. \n\n\n\nThe restoration work involved removing the stained-glass panels and replacing them in the integral structure with clear\, UV light-protecting glass. Inside this\, the restored panels are supported in U-channel frames\, secured by metal bars into the stonework. \n\n\n\nEach pane contains a story locked within the historic glass drawings. \n\n\n\nRead more: Exquisite stained glass ‘Wappenscheiben’ returns to Greys Court \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nThis event is free\, but normal admission charges apply for the venue. \n\n\n\nBooking is not required. \n\n\n\nDates & times:Open daily 11.00am to 3.30pm.

SUMMARY:Kabuki Legends: Part Two
DESCRIPTION:Kabuki Legends: Part Two. Image: Dancing Cranes by Takahashi Hiromitsu\, 2017 © Hiromitsu Takahashi / The Tolman Collection\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Kabuki Legends: Part Two\n\n\n\nStencil Prints by Takahashi Hiromitsu \n\n\n\nJapanese artist Takahashi Hiromitsu creates dynamic\, colourful prints showing exciting moments in kabuki\, a traditional form of dance-drama. This is the second show in a two-part exhibition of his works in Gallery 29. \n\n\n\nHiromitsu’s striking designs are not portraits of actual actors\, but visualisations of famous kabuki roles. \n\n\n\nIn kabuki\, performers wearing elaborate costumes and make-up use stylised movement and song to enact melodramatic stories about love\, loyalty and the clash between duty and emotion. \n\n\n\nThe works recall Japan’s traditional ukiyo-e woodblock actor prints\, but are made using a different technique – kappazuri\, or stencil printing\, originally used for dyeing kimono. This process is complex and labour-intensive\, and Hiromitsu is one of very few artists working in this way today. \n\n\n\nThis exhibition showcases a second selection of these unusual prints from the Ashmolean’s own extensive collection of Hiromitsu’s work\, generously presented by Philip Harris. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nPrices:Admission is FREE \n\n\n\nDate and times:From 16 February 2024 to 23 February 2025 \n\n\n\nThe museum is open every day from 10.00am to 5.00pm \n\n\n\nLocation:Gallery 29 \n\n\n\nWatch the Kabuki Legends: Part One video

SUMMARY:The Household Cavalry Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The Household Cavalry Exhibition. Image: The Squadron Leader of the Blues and Royals. Pictured from Canary Wharf looking toward The City of London. 40″ x 93.7″ / 101.6cm x 238cm\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Household Cavalry Exhibition\n\n\n\nBritish photographic artist Ripley has created twelve large-scale portraits of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment. \n\n\n\nThe imagery features soldiers from The Life Guards and the Blues and Royals mounted on their horses and posed on buildings throughout London\, overlooking the capital from Trafalgar Square to Canary Wharf. \n\n\n\nA boxed set of the twelve portraits was the official Coronation present from the Household Cavalry to His Majesty King Charles III. This was presented by Ripley and senior officers from the Household Cavalry to King Charles III at Buckingham Palace on 15 June 2023. \n\n\n\nRipley works with high-resolution digital composite photography to create large-scale portraits. His primary focus is working with Thoroughbred Racehorses\, creating a feel of the equine master painters but using modern methods to create works of incredible detail and clarity.  \n\n\n\nNotable works include the portrait of ‘Estimate’\, which Ripley created for Queen Elizabeth II in 2016. ‘Estimate’ was owned by the late Queen and won the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot in 2013. \n\n\n\nRipley supports The Household Cavalry Foundation\, whose “Duty of Care” includes operational casualties\, veterans\, serving soldiers and their dependents\, and the Cavalry’s four centuries’ heritage and the welfare of their horses. A percentage of profits raised through sales of these portraits go to this worthy cause. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nLocation:The exhibition is in the Great Hall at Blenheim Palace. \n\n\n\nTickets required:Palace\, Park and Gardens day ticket\, Annual Pass or Privilege Pass. \n\n\n\n\nDiscover more about Ripley’s Household Cavalry Exhibition. \n\n\n\nDiscover more \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAll pictures © Ripley

SUMMARY:Fair Water
DESCRIPTION:Travel from water source to river mouth to learn about the water inequality that lies below the surface.\nEarth is soaked in water from the core to the atmosphere. \nBut just 3% of the planet’s water is fresh\, and one in four of us doesn’t have access to clean drinking water. How do we protect people’s right to water when there’s not enough\, and how do we adapt to extreme water events? \nFair Water reveals some of the global barriers to water equality and explores how researchers\, communities and policymakers are working together to shape a fair water future. \n\n\n\n	Water has the power to hold our lives in the balance. \nIssues of water insecurity impact not only humans but also freshwater species\, including the Ganges River Dolphin\, Helicopter Catfish\, and the fish and insects native to Britain’s waterways. \nDiscover how communities and engineers in Kenya\, Ethiopia\, and Bangladesh are working to provide access to drinking water and protection against hazards like floods and droughts. \nWith striking photography from Ethiopian artist Aïda Muluneh\, the exhibition reveals how life without clean water has an especially great impact on women’s lives and futures. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nFree entry. Bus tickets are valid for all journeys on the day. \nThe Winter Light trail around the Pleasure Grounds is almost all on flat and tarmac surfaces. \nThe trail down Miss Alice’s Drive has an unfinished surface and steep gradients\, which may be challenging in wet conditions and unsuitable for all mobility requirements. \nThere is a steep path to the Stables\, and it is recommended that those with mobility requirements take the bus from North Fountain to the Stables. \nWheelchairs are available to borrow on a first come\, first served basis. These cannot be reserved. \nIn the House\, there are ramps that enable entry at the main entrance. Inside\, there is step-free access on the ground floor. Access to the first floor is by lift and is dependent on the availability of staff who are needed to operate it. Please note some walkways through rooms are narrow. Carry chairs and seat sticks are not permitted. \nIf you need any assistance during your visit\, please speak to a member of staff who’ll be happy to help. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Can I bring my dog? \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n Well-behaved dogs on short leads are welcome in most outdoor areas. It can get crowded at peak times. Also there are lots of lights\, cables and speakers at doggy level\, which may cause your dog distress. \nIt is suggested that the experience at Christmas might not be suitable for our four-legged friends as the Winter Light trail features moving and sudden lights and sounds. \nNote: Dogs are not permitted in the light trail’s interactive zone in front of the Aviary. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Will there be food and drink available? \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n Festive food-to-go will be available from the Manor Terrace\, Coffee Bar\, Woodland Toyshop & Takeaway and Stables Takeaway. \nFestive afternoon teas will be served in the Manor Restaurant\, but pre-booking essential. \nYou can enjoy freshly-made fish & chips at the Stables Café. \nThere will be a variety of independent street food traders at the new Food Village located near the Manor and Christmas Fair\, open until 7.00pm each day. \nCard and cash payments are accepted at Waddesdon’s outlets and stalls at the market and Food Village. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Can I have Afternoon Tea on my visit? \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n Yes. But please be aware of the following: \nIf you are booking an afternoon tea\, please select a restaurant sitting at least 30 minutes after your Grounds admission to allow sufficient time to get to the restaurant. \nIf you are booking an afternoon tea with House & Grounds admission\, please select an afternoon tea sitting at least 40-50 minutes after your House entry time. You will only be able to enter the Grounds up to one hour before your House entry time and will not have time to enjoy afternoon tea beforehand. \nThose with special dietary requirements\, please complete the text box requesting vegetarian\, vegan\, gluten-\, dairy- or nut-free afternoon tea. This appears under Additional Information after confirming your ticket selection\, payment\, and order details when checking out.

SUMMARY:Into Battle: The Art of British War Comics
DESCRIPTION:Into Battle: The Art of British War Comics. Images: (Left) Bulldog Breed (1965) – ‘Battle Drill’ original artwork by Jordi Penalva. (Right) ‘Pegasus Bridge’ from Battle Picture Weekly No 2 (1975)\, uncredited artist and writer\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Into Battle: The Art of British War Comics\n\n\n\nThe county’s military history museum is collaborating with Oxford-based Rebellion Publishing on the new exhibition that will offer visitors a chance to explore the history of British war comics through the archives of classic comic titles such as War Picture Library and Battle Action. \n\n\n\nHugely popular today\, Britain has been publishing comics continuously for over 130 years. During that time\, conflict has remained a staple of comic book storytelling\, and by the 1960s and 1970s\, war stories were the most popular genre. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition\, featuring original comic artwork on public display for the first time\, tells the story of war comics decade by decade – From satirical comic strips and patriotic illustrated story papers of 19th Century and early 20th Century to the revolutionary comics of the 1970s\, which presented much more gritty\, authentic and emotionally-charged stories. \n\n\n\nLong-time readers of comics will be given a nostalgic look back at some of their favourites\, while younger and more recent fans will gain an insight into how their favourite medium has developed over the years. \n\n\n\nDrawing on Rebellion’s extensive archives\, the exhibition features artwork from the very best of British comics – taking in spectacular covers and action-packed panels from the War Picture Library\, Battle Picture Weekly and Battle Action. \n\n\n\nBattle Action\, which Rebellion have recently revived with the work of renowned comic writers and artists such as Garth Ennis (Preacher\, The Boys)\, Keith Burns (Commando Comics\, Johnny Red) and Dab Abnett (Warhammer 40k\, Marvel Comics)\, features heavily throughout. \n\n\n\nImage (cropped): Gun Duel cover (Battle Picture Library\, 1967) by Graham Cotton (Copyright Rebellion Publishing)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe comic\, which was known as Battle Picture Weekly before merging with Action comics in 1977\, notably featured the series Charley’s War by Pat Mills and Jo Colquhoun – regarded as one of the greatest war comics of all time. \n\n\n\nFollowing its working-class hero from underage recruit in 1914 through almost every major event of the war\, the strip sees Charley lose friends in battle\, portraying the human cost of war through the eyes of an ordinary soldier. \n\n\n\nThe incredible artwork on display will includes original 1983 Charley’s War panels by Mill and Colquhoun\, alongside full colour original artwork from Jordi Penalva (Bulldog Breed\, 1965)\, Giorgio de Gaspari (Spy 13\, 1959) and Graham Cotton (Gun Duel\, 1967). \n\n\n\nAlongside much to capture the interest and imagination of adults\, the exhibition will offer younger visitors the chance to discover how comics are made and have a go at creating comics themselves.
