SUMMARY:Olivia Plender: Little Fennel's Complaint
DESCRIPTION:Olivia Plender: Little Fennel’s Complaint. Image: Olivia Plender\, title TBC\, 2026\, Embroidered textile © Olivia Plender\, courtesy Maureen Paley\, London\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Olivia Plender: Little Fennel’s Complaint\n\n\n\nDiscover the hidden history of women’s bodies\, medicine and resistance through Olivia Plender’s major new solo exhibition. \n\n\n\nModern Art Oxford is delighted to present Little Fennel’s Complaint\, a major solo exhibition by Olivia Plender (b. 1977\, London)\, exploring historic and ongoing inequalities in women’s healthcare\, from early modern witchcraft to contemporary debates on reproductive rights and medical authority. \n\n\n\nPlender developed the exhibition through research with leading Oxford institutions\, including the Bodleian Library\, Oxford Botanic Garden and John Radcliffe Hospital. Across embroidered textiles\, watercolours\, drawings\, mobiles\, and sound works\, she examines how women’s healthcare has been recorded\, classified\, and practised over time. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition combines new commissions\, existing works\, and historic manuscripts to highlight Plender’s multidisciplinary\, research-led practice. Installations trace shifting approaches to medicine and diagnosis\, opening with a presentation inspired by contemporary hospital architectures and waiting rooms. This builds on Plender’s ongoing project Our Bodies are Not the Problem (2021–)\, developed with the Glasgow Women’s Library\, exploring the links between ill health\, disability and structural inequalities. \n\n\n\nHistorical perspectives include Plender’s series Bringing Down the Flowers (2023–)\, watercolours in the style of genteel 19th-century flower paintings of plants historically used to induce abortion\, referencing orally transmitted reproductive knowledge. Three 17th-century manuscripts by astrologer-physician Richard Napier\, on loan from the Bodleian Library\, document consultations with women about their reproductive health\, alongside other ‘women’s problems’ such as ‘green sickness’\, a diagnosis formerly given only to unmarried women. \n\n\n\nDisplayed alongside these is Plender’s hanging mobile (2024) reflecting on humoral medicine (based on the ancient theory of the humours) and other systems of classification from the Renaissance to today. The exhibition culminates in a large-scale embroidered textile loosely based on scenes from the Malleus Maleficarum\, a notorious treatise on witchcraft written by Heinrich Kramer (1486)\, which portrayed women – particularly midwives and healers – as susceptible to demonic influence. \n\n\n\nBy placing historic manuscripts alongside contemporary artworks\, the exhibition asks who has the authority to define what is rational\, legitimate\, and true\, and explores how systems of knowledge shape lived experience while opening possibilities for alternative understandings. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTickets for this exhibition can be purchased on the day of your visit at Modern Art Oxford’s Welcome Desk\, or pre-booked online via eventbrite \n\n\n\nBuy tickets \n\n\n\nLocation: \n\n\n\nUpper Galleries 2 & 3 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Modern Art Oxford\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nModern Art Oxford is one of the UK’s leading contemporary art spaces. SUMMARY:Kira Freije: Unspeak the Chorus
DESCRIPTION:Kira Freije: Unspeak the Chorus. Photo: Installation image of Kira Freije: Unspeak the Chorus\, The Hepworth Wakefield\, November 2025. Photo credit: Lewis Ronald\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Kira Freije: Unspeak the Chorus\n\n\n\nWalk amongst Kira Freije’s life-sized figures within an atmospheric and emotionally charged space\, where groupings suggest fragments of larger imagined narratives. \n\n\n\nModern Art Oxford presents Unspeak the Chorus\, the Turner Prize nominated solo exhibition by British artist Kira Freije (b.1985\, lives and works in London)\, featuring a new body of work co-commissioned by Modern Art Oxford and The Hepworth Wakefield. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition is Freije’s first major solo presentation in the UK\, bringing together around twenty hand-welded\, life-size metal figures\, with the artist expanding her practice through the inclusion of animals and textiles. The resulting work transforms the Upper Gallery into an immersive and emotionally charged environment in which human and animal worlds meet. \n\n\n\nFreije’s hand-welded metal figures\, arranged in intimate groupings\, suggest fragments of a story without ever resolving into a fixed narrative. United by a palpable sense of kinship\, the figures appear at once connected and self-contained – celebrating\, loving\, grieving\, guiding\, resting\, reaching and exhaling. While subtle interactions unfold between the sculptures\, Freije deliberately leaves the scene open\, inviting viewers to bring their own interpretations and emotional responses to the work. \n\n\n\nTo create her life-size sculptures\, Freije casts her own hands and feet in aluminium before constructing each figure from the ground up. Welding strips of steel together in a process akin to drawing an outline in space\, she builds skeletal forms that are at once delicate and robust. Faces\, or fragments of faces\, are cast from people close to her; fabric\, found materials and hand-blown glass elements are incorporated to complete materially layered scenes that combine strength and vulnerability. \n\n\n\nDeveloped in collaboration with lighting designer Matt Daw\, Unspeak the Chorus responds directly to the distinctive architecture of Modern Art Oxford’s Upper Gallery\, using atmospheric lighting and staging to heighten the emotional presence of the sculptures. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTickets for this exhibition can be purchased on the day of your visit at Modern Art Oxford’s Welcome Desk\, or pre-booked online via eventbrite \n\n\n\nBuy tickets \n\n\n\nLocation: \n\n\n\nUpper Gallery 1 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Modern Art Oxford\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nModern Art Oxford is one of the UK’s leading contemporary art spaces. Later\, he etched and painted regularly in Crete alongside the role of draughtsman to the British School of Archaeology until 1996. You can see painting\, photography\, textiles\, sculpture\, ceramics\, glass\, mosaics\, jewellery\, woodworking\, and contemporary installations. Many artists offer demonstrations or encourage visitors to try their hand\, providing a rare opportunity to engage directly with the creative process. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Oxfordshire Artweeks\n\n\n\nOxfordshire Artweeks is the UK’s oldest and largest artist open studios and pop-up exhibition event. \n\n\n\nThe Artweeks festival is Oxfordshire’s largest visual arts festival and the UK’s oldest and biggest Open Studios event. It is a three-week not-for-profit celebration in May each year of the county’s artistic and creative talent encompassing the visual arts in their broadest sense. \n\n\n\nUsually\, around 1\,500 artists open the doors to their homes and studios or participate in pop-up exhibitions and welcome the public to see their creations and watch them work. Over 100\,000 people visit Artweeks exhibitions each year\, and a million pounds of art changes hands. \n\n\n\nIn previous years\, visitors have been able to immerse themselves in a giant wild-flower meadow of paint at Oxford’s North Wall\, marvel at shimmering glass meteorites in Kidlington or take a trip into the past with jewellery inspired by archaeology or the stunning mosaics by Becky Paton. \n\n\n\nVisitors could see traditional blacksmithing in Watlington and the Cotswolds\, take an outdoor art trail through Chipping Norton and wander through a stunning five-acre garden in Kingham near Chipping Norton populated with hundreds of sculptures. \n\n\n\nIn Burford\, there were extraordinary hand-sculpted wooden tables to discover\, each like a miniature tree. And in Shipton-under-Wychwood\, animal artist Nic Vickery set up her 1968 caravan studio ‘Gertie’ at a working metalwork studio in nearby Asthall\, where a metal forest grows! \n\n\n\nYou’ll find full details for Oxfordshire Artweeks Festival on the festival website. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important ticketing information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTicketing information\n\n\n\nAll venues are drop-in and are generally open between 11.00am and 6.00pm. However\, this varies\, so please confirm the times for individual venues before travelling.

SUMMARY:Anna Ridler: A Perfect Language of Images
DESCRIPTION:Anna Ridler: A Perfect Language of Images\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Anna Ridler: A Perfect Language of Images\n\n\n\nAnna Ridler is an artist whose work explores the creative and societal possibilities of artificial intelligence\, often through self-built datasets that question how knowledge is constructed\, classified\, and shared. \n\n\n\nAn Oxford University alumna\, her work has been exhibited internationally at institutions including the V&A and the Centre Pompidou\, and she has been recognised by Ars Electronica and Artnet as one of nine pioneering artists working with AI. \n\n\n\nThe digital artwork\, created in collaboration with Dr William Poole from the Faculty of English at the University of Oxford\, brings together three pieces by Ridler under the title A Perfect Language of Images. \n\n\n\nIt is inspired by Oxford scholar John Wilkins’ 1668 attempt to classify the world through a universal philosophical language\, and Jorge Luis Borges’ later critique of such systems as inherently incomplete and unstable. \n\n\n\nDrawing these ideas into conversation with contemporary machine learning\, the work reflects on how generative systems inherit the same ambition towards totalising order\, while continually revealing its limits. \n\n\n\nIn doing so\, Ridler’s installation exposes the tension between classification and complexity\, highlighting what can be approximated\, what resists categorisation\, and what ultimately escapes representation. \n\n\n\n\n\nWork 1:+\n\n\n\n\nA Catalogue of Exceptions shows some of the things that strain or fail to fit within Wilkins’ taxonomy. Throughout the system there are acknowledged difficulties; organisms that are “imperfect”\, “strange originals” and things suspended in “betwixt” categories: coral that is neither mineral nor plant\, fungi that “seem to want” essential parts\, zoophytes suspended between kingdoms. \n\n\n\nCreated using roughly a decade of different generative systems (2016–2025)\, each with its own unique aesthetic\, and trained on imagery drawn from Wilkins’ own descriptions\, it becomes almost a cabinet of curiosities\, even as the logic that links each image remains unstable or not immediately legible. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWork 2:+\n\n\n\n\nBetween Things displays Wilkins’ phrases as evidence of classification under pressure—instances where his system hesitates\, hedges\, and cannot decide. Handwritten text is rendered large and placed into the environment as a record of doubt\, but one that is only visible at 3am\, for an hour. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWork 3:+\n\n\n\n\nAn Infinity of Lists assembles Wilkins’ language itself\, showing every word used in his system\, first mapped to the hierarchy he imposed\, then gradually reframed through the logic of word2vec. \n\n\n\nOver the duration of the work the mapping shifts from the symbolic architecture of Wilkins’ invented order toward statistical relations in learned embedding space. The piece flutters between word\, image\, and symbol\, making visible how translation across systems and across time changes what counts as related. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nOpen daily. SUMMARY:Refik Anadol: Archive Dreaming
DESCRIPTION:Refik Anadol: Archive Dreaming\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Refik Anadol: Archive Dreaming\n\n\n\nArchive Dreaming is an immersive fusion of art and machine intelligence. \n\n\n\nThe installation transforms a vast digital archive into a dream-like\, ever-evolving environment\, using AI algorithms to reimagine millions of documents in real time. \n\n\n\nAs viewers move through the space\, they are surrounded by shifting visuals\, patterns\, text\, and imagery that evoke the sensation of walking through a living\, thinking mind. \n\n\n\nCreated using Refik Anadol Studio’s Large Nature Model — a generative AI system dedicated to interpreting natural data — the work reframes archives not as static repositories\, but as dynamic\, responsive entities. \n\n\n\nThrough machine learning\, raw data becomes a poetic\, immersive experience that blurs the boundaries between human memory and artificial intelligence. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\n\nOpen daily from 10.00am to 5.00pm.\n\n\n\nClosed until 12.30 pm on Thursday 28 May.\n\n\n\nNo booking required.\n\n\n\n\nLocation: \n\n\n\nWhite Box \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nSchwarzman Centre for the Humanities is a major new cultural and academic landmark for the University of Oxford\, bringing together seven humanities faculties with performance\, exhibition\, and public engagement spaces under one roof. SUMMARY:Mary Knowland: Lines of Enquiry
DESCRIPTION:Mary Knowland: Lines of Enquiry\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Mary Knowland: Lines of Enquiry\n\n\n\nMary Knowland grew up surrounded by art; her father was a painter\, however\, her initial training was in ceramics with Robin Welch and then at Harrow School of Art. After many years exhibiting and selling\, she returned\, via a course in textiles\, to her drawing and painting roots but has more recently included ceramics in her practice. \n\n\n\nThis collection of work offers us insights into her process of enquiry through line and a variety of media\, working with the human form\, the rhythms of the coast\, the simplicity of everyday objects and natural forms. \n\n\n\nTwo approaches to making drawings and paintings will be apparent. Consciously controlled mark-making and brush strokes verging on the abstract sit alongside a much freer approach where she is not looking at the subject while the work is in progress\, yet capturing the essence of the subject. \n\n\n\nDevelopment of an idea can be seen across a series of drawings where line also directly connects to the ceramics and\, in its various forms\, line is present throughout the exhibition. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFree entry \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nTuesday 31 March to Sunday 19 April 2026 \n\n\n\nExhibition Opening \n\n\n\nTuesday 31 March from 6.00pm to 8.00pm \n\n\n\nPlease join for drinks to celebrate the opening of this exhibition \n\n\n\nFree event. SUMMARY:Camera Club: Spring 2026 Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Camera Club: Spring 2026 Exhibition\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Camera Club: Spring 2026 Exhibition\n\n\n\nCamera Club is part of The North Wall’s YouthLab programme\, which supports young people aged 12 to 17 in developing their creative skills alongside professional artists. \n\n\n\nEvery year a group of 6 to 8 aspiring photographers works with artist Elina Medley to create images using digital SLR cameras and then to curate an exhibition of photography. \n\n\n\nLast summer they worked in the studio as well as the streets and parks of Oxford to experiment with different subject matter and approaches to image-making. Over four days they built on their technical and creative skills and discovered the subjects they love to photograph. \n\n\n\nDuring the October half-term\, they immersed themselves in several exhibitions of photography and learnt so much about how to curate their own exhibition. \n\n\n\nThe group are looking forward to one more day of planning in February before they install their group exhibition in the Spring. Come along and meet our latest cohort of wonderful photographers; they will be staffing the gallery during the show. \n\n\n\nThis exhibition takes place at Magdalen Road Studios. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFree entry \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nSaturday 28 March to Thursday 02 April 2026 at 11.00am \n\n\n\nRunning time: \n\n\n\n4 hours \n\n\n\nLocation: \n\n\n\nMagdalen Road Studios

SUMMARY:Foraging Connections
DESCRIPTION:Foraging Connections\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Foraging Connections\n\n\n\nForaging Connections is a collaborative exhibition blending art\, science\, nature and community. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition displays a collection of work created using foraged plants\, transformed through ancient techniques such as cordage and weaving\, to reflect the raw beauty and cyclical nature of the natural world\, that is both ephemeral and enduring. \n\n\n\nSince spring 2025\, artists Lilli Tranborg and Arbie Edward have been working with children from local charity\, Children Heard And Seen\, at both Modern Art Oxford and Wytham Woods. \n\n\n\nExploring the theme of connectedness\, to both each other and nature\, the workshops have encouraged a tactile engagement with natural materials in the spirit of innovation\, inclusion and growth\, and with a focus on the importance of trees and forests. \n\n\n\nDuring these workshops\, a sculpture in Wytham Woods has been repurposed\, to reflect on themes of refuge and repair\, and will forge a connection between the woods and the gallery space at Modern Art Oxford. \n\n\n\nThe workshops delivered in the run up to this exhibition were a partnership with IF Oxford and Oxford North\, and formed part of Oxford North’s Engage Programme. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Modern Art Oxford\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nModern Art Oxford is one of the UK’s leading contemporary art spaces. These participatory activities are designed to help visitors explore our exhibitions\, experiment with creative processes and celebrate the relevance of contemporary visual culture to society today. \n\n\n\nModern Art Oxford was founded in 1965\, and has a rich history of bold and progressive programming that promotes diversity and internationalism\, encourages public engagement with creativity and the arts\, and celebrates the importance of contemporary visual culture in today’s society. \n\n\n\nDiscover more about Modern Art Oxford

SUMMARY:Pets & their People
DESCRIPTION:Pets & their People\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Pets & their People\n\n\n\nWe have been domesticating animals for over ten thousand years. But why do we want tame wolves in our homes or wild cats on our laps? \n\n\n\nThis exhibition explores the relationship between humans and their pets – or pets and their humans. \n\n\n\nPets & their People draws on depictions of pets in stories\, imagery and poetry in the Bodleian’s collection – from one of the earliest recorded depictions of an assistance dog for the blind to a rare copy of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland that has never been displayed in the UK before. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition asks how the special bond between owners and their pets has evolved over time\, and what that evolution tells us about who we really are. \n\n\n\nAre we taming our pets\, or are they bringing us back to our wild roots? \n\n\n\nExhibition book \n\n\n\nPets & their People \n\n\n\nBy Charles Foster \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Exhibition book – Pets & their People\n\n\n\nBestselling author Charles Foster provides an extraordinary mix of psychology\, science and cultural history as he explores the fascinating relationship between humans and their pets. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThese wonderful images are actually postcards\, collected by the artist Tom Phillips (1937–2022) and part of the archive donated to the Bodleian Libraries. \n\n\n\nDating from the c1890s – 1960s\, they capture different relationships between people and the animals around them. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCall for submissions \n\n\n\nAs part of the exhibition\, the Bodleian Libraries are inviting members of the public to contribute to a contemporary record of people and their pets. Participants are encouraged to submit photographs featuring themselves and their pets\, either by recreating images from the Tom Phillips postcard collection or by sharing original photographs inspired by the theme. \n\n\n\nSend them to socialmedia@bodleian.ox.ac.uk. SUMMARY:St Edward’s School Art Teachers: Circa 500
DESCRIPTION:St Edward’s School Art Teachers: Circa 500\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout St Edward’s School Art Teachers: Circa 500\n\n\n\nCirca 500 is composed of eleven artists who spend their days teaching\, questioning\, and building alongside the next generation of artists at St Edward’s School. \n\n\n\nThis exhibition turns that practice inward\, revealing the breadth of disciplines that animate their department: ceramics\, sculpture\, textiles\, painting\, print\, photography\, graphics\, and film. \n\n\n\nWhat connects them is not a single medium but a shared curiosity. Clay and thread\, paint and colour\, lens and screen\, ink and object each hold their own language. Together\, they create a conversation about process\, experiment\, and the shifting roles they inhabit as educators and artists. \n\n\n\nThe works on display emerge from the overlap of classroom and studio\, from the restless space between guiding others and pursuing individual investigations. They are presented not as finished answers but as open propositions\, fragments of dialogue\, and invitations to look closer. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFree entry \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nWednesday 11 to Friday 27 March 2026 at 7.30pm \n\n\n\nExhibition Opening: \n\n\n\nThursday 12 March 5.00pm to 7.00pm \n\n\n\nPlease join in for drinks to celebrate the opening of this exhibition \n\n\n\nFree event / no booking required \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The North Wall Arts Centre\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nThe North Wall Arts Centre is an an award-winning theatre\, gallery and performing arts centre located in Summertown\, North Oxford. SUMMARY:The Drawing Project
DESCRIPTION:The Drawing Project\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Drawing Project\n\n\n\nThe Drawing Project is a collaborative work involving sixteen artists and two paintings from the Ashmolean Museum: The Forest Fire by Piero di Cosimo and The Exposition of Moses by Nicholas Poussin. The aim was to produce drawings that worked collectively as well as individually. \n\n\n\nThe artists produced drawings which were then assembled to become full-scale representations of the original paintings. The four assembled collaborative representations are made of fifteen individually drawn sections. Each artist produced their drawings to scale using a variety of drawing and painting media\, with some also working in collage. \n\n\n\nDuring eight months\, over sixty individual project drawings were produced and then assembled into four large drawings representing the original paintings. \n\n\n\nThe finished assembled works are 1:1 representations of the original paintings; two in colour and two in black and white. Some of the artists have also produced additional work referencing the original paintings. \n\n\n\nAt the Ashmolean Museum\, there’s a wonderful opportunity for both families and adults to attend a workshop inspired by the exhibition. SUMMARY:Peter Rhoades & Emma Baldwin: Hand to Eye
DESCRIPTION:Peter Rhoades & Emma Baldwin: Hand to Eye\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Peter Rhoades & Emma Baldwin: Hand to Eye\n\n\n\nPeter Rhoades’s works in this exhibition date from the 1970s and 80s\, a time of both personal and historical change and tension. Only a few of these paintings and drawings have been shown before. \n\n\n\nPeter returned to making images direct from visual observation\, having spent the 1960s primarily involved with various kinds of abstraction. In doing so\, he was reviving his Ruskinian roots initially nurtured by his father and Percy Horton at the Ruskin School of Art. \n\n\n\nThe drawings and a few of the paintings also represent his ongoing concern with European figure composition. \n\n\n\nPeter is an artist and teacher/lecturer working in painting\, drawing and printmaking. Much of his teaching career has been at Oxford University as both a tutor at the Ruskin School of Art and Christ Church College. \n\n\n\nPeter was also a lecturer at Abingdon & Witney College\, working for many years on the prestigious Foundation Visual Arts course with his co-exhibitor Emma Baldwin. \n\n\n\nEmma Baldwin is a potter who\, after thirty years at Abingdon and Witney College\, is making wheel-thrown vessels full-time. Emma enjoys making both functional and sculptural forms inspired by both contemporary and historical sources. \n\n\n\nShe is primarily drawn to ceramics as an object\, fascinated by the line between what makes something functional or a work of art. Emma finds the entire process of transforming Earth into an object of beauty completely engrossing. \n\n\n\nEmma was first introduced to clay at school\, aged 14\, and has been working with it on and off ever since. Emma studied ceramics at Bristol Polytechnic in 1992\, where she had the privilege to be taught by both Walter Keeler and Mo Jupp – two truly inspiring potters. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFree entry \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nWednesday 21 January to Saturday 07 February 2026 \n\n\n\nMonday to Saturday from 10.00am to 4.00pm \n\n\n\nClosed on Sunday and Bank Holiday \n\n\n\nRunning time: \n\n\n\n1 hour\, without an interval \n\n\n\nGood to know: \n\n\n\nExhibition Opening on Thursday 22 January from 6.00pm to 8.00pm \n\n\n\nPlease join for drinks to celebrate the opening of this exhibition \n\n\n\nFree event. SUMMARY:Sofia Wierkus & Violette Baransi: Through the Fence
DESCRIPTION:Sofia Wierkus & Violette Baransi: Through the Fence\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Sofia Wierkus & Violette Baransi: Through the Fence\n\n\n\nIsraeli artist Sofia Wierkus and Palestinian artist Violette Baransi have spent the past two years working in collaboration\, exploring the complex realities of life on both sides of the fence. \n\n\n\nThrough their shared experience\, the young artists have created a powerful body of work that responds to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East—without taking sides or making explicit political statements. \n\n\n\nThe artists’ creative journey has been shaped by the events of October 7\, a pivotal moment in both artists’ work. Their response to these events and the broader realities of war unfold through a variety of media\, with a particular emphasis on printmaking. Each piece speaks to the destruction\, trauma\, and human cost of conflict on both sides of the divide. \n\n\n\nThis exhibition showcases a mix of individual and collaborative works\, where the artists process the ongoing conflict in a deeply personal yet shared artistic language. \n\n\n\nThis includes a short film documenting an ongoing community engagement youth initiative in Israel-Palestine. Through their art\, Wierkus and Baransi invite viewers to witness the impact of war without simplifying it into partisan narratives\, offering a poignant reflection on the human experience at the heart of the ongoing crisis. \n\n\n\nThrough the Fence is more than an art exhibition; it is an exploration of our shared humanity. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFree entry. SUMMARY:The Camera Helps: A Definitive Retrospective of the Work of Paddy Summerfield
DESCRIPTION:The Camera Helps: A Definitive Retrospective of the Work of Paddy Summerfield\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Camera Helps: A Definitive Retrospective of the Work of Paddy Summerfield\n\n\n\nPaddy Summerfield (1947–2024) was a photographer who developed a new psychological vision of photography\, turning the camera on the innermost workings of the human mind and heart. \n\n\n\nDespite an ongoing battle with bipolar disorder\, leading the photographer to continue living with his parents in Oxford\, Summerfield rose to prominence in the 1980s. Later\, his five critically acclaimed publications depicted Summerfield’s most intense and enduring photographic obsessions: desire and alienation. \n\n\n\nThis substantial retrospective of the photographer’s work shows the stages of Summerfield’s creative evolution through comprehensive installations inspired by his five major publications as well as other significant bodies of work. \n\n\n\nHighlights on display include: \n\n\n\n\nThe Oxford Pictures 1968-78\, a series capturing students during the summer term at Oxford. Close in age but feeling like an outsider\, Summerfield found a shared sense of loneliness in his subjects. Though set beside rivers\, college lawns\, and Oxford streets\, the images evoke the insecurities of youth\, including longing\, isolation\, and sexual anxiety\, with solitary figures reflecting his own experience.\n\n\n\nTony Lights Up (2016)\, an unpublished short photo-essay and portrait of ‘Tony’\, a familiar figure at the time to local people\, living in sheltered accommodation. Summerfield accompanied Tony on his daily routine of asking for small change\, laughing at the world around him\, and betting on dogs – portraying his pleasure in the quiet satisfaction of lighting a cigarette.\n\n\n\nMother and Father (Dewi Lewis Publishing\, 2014)\, a moving and poignant journal of the final years of his parents’ sixty-year marriage. From 1997 to 2007\, Summerfield documented his mother’s worsening Alzheimer’s and his father’s unceasing dedication to caring for her.\n\n\n\n\nThe exhibition also offers a glimpse of both the physicality and mastery of Summerfield’s unique and idiosyncratic relationship with the craft of photographic print making. \n\n\n\nThis exhibition is part of Photo Oxford. \n\n\n\nA small display – Paddy Summerfield: Order out of chaos – will be open from the end of August until 30 November in Blackwall Hall. It previews Summerfield’s working process and serves as a forerunner to the full exhibition. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\n Free admission\, no ticket required \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nSaturday 11 October to Sunday 30 November 2025  \n\n\n\nMonday to Saturday from 10.00am to 5.00pmSunday from 11.00am to 4.00pm \n\n\n\nLocation: \n\n\n\nBlackwell Hall\, Weston Library

DESCRIPTION:Pat Suet-Bik Hui & the Three Perfections\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Pat Suet-Bik Hui & the Three Perfections\n\n\n\nThis exhibition celebrates the work of Pat Suet-Bik Hui 許雪碧 (b. 1943)\, a US-based Hong Kong artist\, shown alongside others who explore the tradition of the ‘three perfections’ 三絕 – the harmonious blending of poetry\, calligraphy\, and painting. \n\n\n\nFeaturing works by Hui\, her contemporaries\, her teacher Lui Shou-Kwan\, and artists of his generation\, as well as earlier examples from the 17th to 19th centuries\, the exhibition offers a rich context for understanding Hui as both an innovator and a guardian of tradition. \n\n\n\nIn this artistic lineage\, calligraphic brushstrokes carry as much compositional weight as painted forms\, while poetry and imagery combine to create expressions neither can achieve alone. \n\n\n\nHui’s contemporary approach merges abstract and semi-abstract ink and colour washes with understated calligraphy\, inscribing poems that reflect on themes including love\, loss\, and the quiet joys of drinking. \n\n\n\nVisitors will find translations of many inscribed poems and guidance on interpreting the interplay of painting\, calligraphy\, and poetry within individual works. \n\n\n\nHui gifted her paintings to art historian Michael Sullivan\, whose collection was bequeathed to the Ashmolean Museum in 2013. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nPrice: \n\n\n\nFree \n\n\n\nLocation: \n\n\n\nGallery 11 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Painting with Poem by Xin Qiji\, Pat Suet-Bik Hui & Wucius Wong\, 1987\, ink & colour on paper © Ashmolean Museum\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Painting with poem by Paul Ka-Yin Kwok\, Pat Suet-Bik Hui & Paul Ka-Yin Kwok\, 1999\, ink colour on paper © Ashmolean Museum\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Painting with poem by Nara Singde\, Pat Suet-Bik Hui\, 1991\, ink & colour on paper © Ashmolean Museum

SUMMARY:Remembrances of War: Paul Joyce Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Remembrances of War \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Remembrances of War: Paul Joyce Exhibition\n\n\n\nThe Soldiers of Oxfordshire Museum presents Remembrances of War\, an evocative exhibition of paintings by artist Paul Joyce. \n\n\n\nBorn in 1940 under the shadow of the Second World War\, Joyce draws on personal childhood memories of bomb-scarred London as well as the wider cultural memory of a world devastated by conflict. \n\n\n\nBile of Beans\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe collection juxtaposes scenes of smouldering rubble in South London with imagined depictions of Hiroshima and the destruction across Europe. \n\n\n\nEveryday objects such as Bovril and baked beans appear alongside military aircraft and apocalyptic landscapes\, reflecting the absurd collision of the ordinary and the catastrophic during wartime. \n\n\n\nDown!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInfluenced by artists such as Paul Nash and Eric Ravilious\, Joyce’s works combine pastoral scenes with striking\, militarised elements. Devoid of human figures\, the paintings instead speak through objects\, buildings\, and machines—haunting reminders of the people whose lives were shaped by war. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition is enriched by artefacts from the museum’s collection\, offering further insight into how ordinary people endured and adapted to extraordinary times. Visitors of all ages are welcome\, with interactive features including a reconstructed 1940s bedroom and creative activities for children. \n\n\n\nBattle of Britain\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEntry to Remembrances of War also includes access to the museum’s wider galleries\, from immersive First and Second World War experiences to the temporary exhibition Life Lines\, which explores the liberation of Bergen-Belsen through community art projects centred on acts of kindness. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices (with Gift Aid): \n\n\n\n\nAdults – £8.00\n\n\n\nConcessions (Armed Forces\, Over 60s\, Students) – £7.00\n\n\n\nChildren (5-16) – £4.50\n\n\n\nFamily tickets and group offers also available.\n\n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nSaturday 13 September to Tuesday 18 November 2025 \n\n\n\nTuesday to Saturday from 11.00am to 5.00pm \n\n\n\nSunday from 2.00pm to 5.00pm \n\n\n\nGood to know: \n\n\n\nPhone and email for general enquiries & event tickets – 01993 810 211\, frontofhouse@sofo.org.uk

SUMMARY:Through Love Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Through Love Art Exhibition\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Through Love Art Exhibition\n\n\n\nThis September\, Magdalen Road Studios will host a deeply moving exhibition that celebrates the life and legacy of much-loved Oxford social worker and mother-of-three\, Ana Arroyave. \n\n\n\nExactly five years after her untimely death\, Through Love opens on Friday 5 September\, presenting a body of work by Ana’s sister\, the established artist Maria Arroyave. Through a series of mixed media and collage paintings\, Maria explores her own journey of grief\, turning personal loss into art with purpose. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition not only honours Ana but also raises funds for SeeSaw\, the Oxfordshire charity supporting children and young people through grief\, and the Stroke Association. \n\n\n\nAna Arroyave was born in Oxford in 1967\, educated at Rye St Anthony School in Headington\, and later studied Social Work at Ruskin College. She dedicated her career to Oxfordshire communities\, working in education and mental health services\, as well as being a yoga teacher and Relax Kids coach. She lived in Jericho with her husband and three children until her passing in 2020. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition will feature three themed collections: Through Love\, inspired by Rumi’s poetry; Immersed in Nature\, celebrating the healing power of the natural world; and Power of 3\, exploring sibling connection. A special affirmation painting — “In Hope I Stand Fearless\, In Hope I Stand Transformed” — has also been created\, with limited-edition prints on sale to support the chosen charities. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFree event \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nFriday 05 to Monday 15 September 2025 \n\n\n\nDaily from 11.00am to 6.00pm
