The fair dates back to 1625 when it was a parish festival to celebrate the feast of the patron saint\, St Giles\, and is held on the Monday and Tuesday following the first Sunday after St Giles’ Day (01 September). \n\n\n\nIn the 18th century\, it was a toy fair\, and then in the early 19th century\, it was a general children’s fair. The funfair grew during mid and late Victorian times when improved means of transport meant that large numbers of people could be brought into the city to attend the festivities. In 1979 Fairport decided to call it a day and\, having opened up for Led Zeppelin at Knebworth in the early afternoon\, tore across the country in their van to do an outdoor Farewell concert at Peewit Farm on Station Road in Cropredy. \n\n\n\nA year later\, they decided to reconvene with some friends for what would become their annual reunion. Although they had performed in Cropredy before\, 1980 is the year Fairport recognise as the first Cropredy Festival. The festival has continued (on various sites\, including Broughton Castle) up to the present day\, increasing in size from a couple of thousand to its current capacity of 20\,000. \n\n\n\nCropredy is a music festival – it could never be pigeon-holed as a folk festival. Along with the finest in folk and folk-rock – Lindisfarne\, Julie Fowlis\, Steeleye Span\, Ralph McTell\, Cara Dillon – the Cropredy audience has witnessed the likes of Alice Cooper\, Robert Plant\, Status Quo\, Steve Winwood and Buzzcocks. Basically\, whatever music Fairport like is what ends up on the bill. \n\n\n\nAnd\, bucking current trends\, the Cropredy Festival has always stuck to the one-stage idea. The advantage to the customer is that they won’t miss anyone. The advantage to the performer is that no matter how far down the bill they are\, they are guaranteed to be performing in front of at least 10k people. Beats being stuck in an ‘Unsigned’ tent in some remote corner of a forgotten field for sure. \n\n\n\nThe Cropredy ‘Fringe’ – entertainment provided by the two pubs in the village – act as satellite stages. Upon passing through the North Lodge gate there is a pedestrian/local box office on your left where you can scan your mobile QR code in return for a festival wristband. If you have any problems with your pass they’ll also be able to help solve this for you here. \n\n\n\nOnce you have your wristband there is a fenced-off pedestrian walkway that runs along the grass verge\, up the side of the driveway\, taking you straight up to the pedestrian arena entrance\, bringing you into the arena next to the main Wilderness Stage. \n\n\n\nPlease ensure you use this dedicated walkway\, as this road is still used throughout the festival for exiting traffic. \n\n\n\nPlease note – if you’re accessing the campsites from this route you cannot enter until after 12.00pm on Thursday when the arena is open as you will need to walk through the arena to reach any of the campsites! \n\n\n\nIf you’re walking home in the evening\, please wear bright/reflective clothing and bring a torch as there is minimal lighting along some stretches of the surrounding local roads. \n\n\n\nPedestrian Route Instructions \n\n\n\n\nExit the station and turn right\n\n\n\nFollow forest road\, continuing straight over the bridge and then up a slight incline.\n\n\n\nPart way up the incline\, take the first major turning to your right. This will be at a triangle junction that has a small grassy area with a large tree in its centre.**\n\n\n\nFollow the sharp right bend\, round onto church lane.\n\n\n\nContinue up this road\, with most of the houses on your left hand side\, until you reach the entrance to the church yard.\n\n\n\nFollow the path of the church yard through to the other side – please be respectful and keep to the path.\n\n\n\nOnce you reach the exit on the other side\, turn right and follow the road down and then back up until you reach Yellow Gate in your right.\n\n\n\nTurn right and walk up the driveway\, over the bridge and through North Lodge gate – be sure to use the pedestrian gate to the right of the cattlegrid. Each year\, students\, residents and visitors gather to welcome the first day of May with music\, procession and revelry in the heart of the city. \n\n\n\nMusic and ceremony at Magdalen Tower \n\n\n\nFrom around 5.00am\, crowds start assembling under Magdalen Tower\, along the High Street\, and on Magdalen Bridge. Students and fellows of Magdalen College gather in the college cloisters and atop the college towers in preparation for the main event. \n\n\n\nAt 6.00am\, the Magdalen College Choir perform the Hymnus Eucharisticus\, a hymn composed in the 17th century by the College’s choirmaster Benjamin Rogers\, from the top of the 144ft tower. The choir also sings three traditional madrigals\, including the perennial favourite Now Is the Month of Maying\, alongside prayers for the city led by the Dean of Divinity. \n\n\n\nWhen the choir concludes\, the Magdalen Tower bells ring for around 20 minutes\, marking the start of the day’s celebrations. A procession moves from Magdalen Bridge up the High Street and into the city centre\, setting the tone for hours of dancing\, music\, and spontaneous festivities that bring Oxford’s communities together. \n\n\n\nDancing and revelry across the city \n\n\n\nTraditionally\, May Morning features Morris dancing on Broad Street\, Catte Street\, under the Bridge of Sighs\, in front of St John’s College on St Giles\, and on the forecourt of the Ashmolean Museum. Highland dancing can be seen in Radcliffe Square\, between the University Church and the Radcliffe Camera. \n\n\n\nRecent history \n\n\n\nDuring the pandemic\, May Morning 2020 moved online\, with choir members recording remotely\, and a similar online celebration took place in 2021.
