SUMMARY:Fresh Perceptions on Reality Conference
DESCRIPTION:Fresh Perceptions on Reality Conference\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Fresh Perceptions on Reality Conference\n\n\n\n“Until recently\, believing in God seemed incompatible with science. Now\, unexpectedly\, science appears to have become God’s ally.” From the Introduction of God\, The Science\, The Evidence \n\n\n\nFresh Perceptions on Reality is a half-day conference coming to Oxford on Friday 23 January 2026\, running from 2.00pm to 6.00pm at Wolfson College. \n\n\n\nFree and open to the public\, the afternoon event brings together leading scientific and intellectual voices to explore some of humanity’s most enduring questions in the light of modern discoveries. \n\n\n\nThe conference features a distinguished line-up of speakers\, including Sir Roger Penrose\, Andrew Briggs and John C. Lennox\, alongside Michel-Yves Bolloré and Olivier Bonnassies\, authors of the international bestseller God\, The Science\, The Evidence. \n\n\n\nThe book has sold more than 400\,000 copies worldwide and has attracted widespread attention in the UK\, with coverage across The Sunday Times\, The Daily Telegraph\, The London Standard\, BBC Radio 4’s Today programme and BBC News. \n\n\n\nAcross the afternoon\, speakers will examine questions that sit at the heart of both science and philosophy: Where does the universe come from? Are we here by chance? And what do recent advances in quantum physics\, cosmology and artificial intelligence mean for how we understand reality itself? \n\n\n\nOnce seen as incompatible\, science and belief are increasingly being revisited together as new evidence reshapes long-held assumptions. \n\n\n\nDrawing on insights from physics\, cosmology and beyond\, the discussions reflect a growing reassessment of the relationship between scientific discovery and belief\, sometimes described as a “great reversal”. Ideas emerging from relativity\, quantum mechanics\, the Big Bang and the fine-tuning of the universe have reopened debates that many believed were long settled. \n\n\n\nGod\, The Science\, The Evidence distils research and perspectives from more than 100 leading scientists\, including insights linked to 62 Nobel Prize winners\, and extends the conversation beyond science alone to philosophy\, morality and history. \n\n\n\nPraised for being both rigorous and accessible\, the book invites readers – and now conference audiences – to reconsider how science shapes our understanding of existence and whether reality points beyond itself. \n\n\n\nFresh Perceptions on Reality offers an opportunity for Oxford audiences to engage with these ideas firsthand\, in an open and thought-provoking forum that encourages curiosity\, debate and a deeper exploration of one of humanity’s most profound questions. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReviews\n\n\n\n\n“A very welcome\, interesting and easy to read book which argues convincingly that the existence of a creator God\, far from being negated by the scientific understanding of the Universe\, is rationally supported by it. This is a remarkable work with hundreds of references citing leading contemporary scientists.” \n\n\n\nJohn C. Lennox\, Emeritus Professor of Mathematics\, University of Oxford\, author of Can Science Explain Everything? \n\n\n\n\n\n“This book is a very good presentation of the development of the Big Bang theory and its impact on our beliefs and our representation of the world…As the Big Bang theory suggests\, if the Universe had a beginning\, then we cannot avoid the question of creation.” \n\n\n\nRobert Wilson\, Winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics for his discovery of Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation \n\n\n\n\n\n“The book highlights in a remarkable and rigorous manner how the latest scientific advances point towards a creator God. Wonderfully documented\, it also introduces many renowned scientists who advocated for a dynamic harmony and osmosis between their discoveries and the idea of a creator at the origin of all things.” \n\n\n\nStephanie Reader\, Evangelical and specialist in the field of programmed cell death\, author of Is it Possible? When Science and Faith Meet \n\n\n\n\n\n“The amazing advances in science and cosmology over the past century raise fundamental questions about our existence…Michel-Yves Bolloré and Olivier Bonnassies explore these questions in a highly readable way\, and give a personal account of how their answers lead them to a warranted belief in God.” \n\n\n\nAndrew Briggs\, Professor of Physics\, University of Oxford\, author of The Penultimate Curiosity \n\n\n\n\n\n“This book thus provides a strong\, rational argument for the reality of a creator God that is very comforting to those with a scientific mindset. Highly recommended!” \n\n\n\nEben Alexander\, MD\, author of Proof of Heaven \n\n\n\n\n\n“This book represents an innovation. It demonstrates that it is no longer ‘credible’ to pit science against faith…[The book] widens our field of reasoning and is an invitation to wonder.” \n\n\n\nCardinal Robert Sarah\, Prefect Emeritus of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFree event \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nFriday 23 January 2026 at 2.00pm \n\n\n\nRunning time: \n\n\n\n4 hours

SUMMARY:Simon Yates of Touching the Void – My Mountain Life
DESCRIPTION:Simon Yates of Touching the Void – My Mountain Life\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Simon Yates of Touching the Void – My Mountain Life\n\n\n\nA fascinating and humorous evening\, acclaimed by both regular theatre patrons and outdoor enthusiasts alike! \n\n\n\nOn the remote Siula Grande in Peru in June 1985\, mountaineer Simon Yates found himself in a desperately unenviable position. He was slowly being pulled off the mountain face by his injured partner\, Joe Simpson\, dangling on the rope 50 metres below. \n\n\n\nHis decision to cut the rope saved both their lives in the epic of survival that followed and with the publication of the book ‘Touching The Void’\, later film and stage play\, both climbers became household names. \n\n\n\nIt was an experience that could have put many off the sport of mountaineering – but not Simon. Over 35 years later\, he is still a very active exploratory climber and guide\, making several expeditions to the mountains each year. From the Arctic to the Antarctic\, Alaska to Central Asia\, there is hardly a significant range that he has not visited. \n\n\n\nCome along and witness Simon’s tireless journey from that mountain in Peru to some of the remotest on the planet and share with him the drama\, excitement and beauty of modern\, lightweight alpinism. Told with wit\, dry humour and lavishly illustrated with images and film collected on his great climbs. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReviews\n\n\n\n\n“Simon is a totally engaging speaker\, who both entertains and inspires.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\n£21.50 \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nWednesday 21 January 2026 at 7.30pm \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Mill Arts Centre\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nThe Mill Arts Centre is the cultural hub for Banbury and the surrounding area. \n\n\n\nAs the only dedicated arts provision in the area\, it aims to inspire creativity and enrich the lives of the communities by providing a high-quality\, varied artistic\, educational and participatory programme. \n\n\n\nIt plays a significant role in the town’s cultural\, social and economic development by offering the community the chance to engage with and be entertained by several art forms. \n\n\n\nThe Mill Arts Centre offers an exciting live events programme\, including theatre\, dance\, music\, comedy\, film\, workshops and classes. SUMMARY:Oxford's Black & Muslim migration stories
DESCRIPTION:Oxford’s Black & Muslim migration stories\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Oxford’s Black & Muslim migration stories\n\n\n\nThis seminar is one of a new six-part event series taking place this autumn\, hosted by Oxford University’s Community History Hub. The events will showcase a range of innovative local historical projects run by\, or in partnership with\, community historians. \n\n\n\nParticipants will learn about the latest new research being conducted on Oxfordshire’s diverse histories\, as well as gaining new skills that could help shape personal project ideas. \n\n\n\nOn 07 November\, participants will hear about the migration and community histories of local Black and Muslim residents of Oxfordshire\, from two project teams recently funded by the Community History Hub. \n\n\n\n\nThe ‘Place for We’ team has been exploring the ways in which African-Caribbean migrants to Oxford have worked\, played\, protested and built lives in the city\, from the mid-twentieth century to today. Hear from Euton Daley (Unlock the Chains Collective) and Junie James (ACKHI): two of Oxford’s foremost Black History researchers\, who have years of experience between them in building community archives and sharing their histories via plays\, exhibitions\, publications\, and Oxford’s legendary ‘Cowley Road Carnival’.\n\n\n\nThe ‘Muslim History of Oxford’ team has been collecting stories to build a new oral history archive of Muslim community experiences living in Oxfordshire. Sadiya Ahmed (Director of Everyday Muslim) and Dr Aleena Din (postdoctoral researcher at Manchester University) will be discussing the process of building this new archive and will showcase what it tells us about the diverse lived experiences of Muslims who have come to Oxford from all over the world.\n\n\n\n\nThe event is free and everyone is welcome\, but please note that the number of spaces available is limited\, so do book in advance. If you have any questions about the event\, you are welcome to contact Dr Priya Atwal (Community History Fellow) via email at priya.atwal@history.ox.ac.uk. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFree event \n\n\n\nDates and times: \n\n\n\nFriday 07 November 2025 at 2.00pm \n\n\n\nRunning time: \n\n\n\n1 hour 30 minutes \n\n\n\nLocation: \n\n\n\nLearning Studio inside the Stephen A. As the three legs of a bar stool\, going on tour is one non-stop laugh. \n\n\n\nOn our kit list includes big egos\, Mike Leadfoot’s driving\, motorway sandwiches\, back stage arguments\, Travel Lodge soaps\, World Class moaning\, and the most underwhelming riders in the history of live entertainment – proudly sponsored by Jaffa cakes. \n\n\n\nBut we promise if you buy a ticket\, come show time\, we’ll be ‘tits and teeth’ as they say in the industry. There will be Lions and World Cup debriefs\, stories of our weirdest\, darkest\, greatest\, and most unforgettable days\, and those who have entertained\, frightened\, stunned\, and broken us during a combined 60 years in the game. \n\n\n\nThe best nights out involve a Lock In. This is no different. \n\n\n\nSee you there! \n\n\n\nUnless Mike loses his driving license yet again. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFrom £43.77 \n\n\n\nTickets are subject to a transaction fee of £3.95 \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nSunday 02 November 2025 at 8.00pm \n\n\n\nRunning time: \n\n\n\nThis show has an interval \n\n\n\nAge guidance: \n\n\n\n16+ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout New Theatre Oxford\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\nThere has been a theatre on George Street for almost 170 years. SUMMARY:Author Talk: ‘A Jericho Scrapbook’ with Mark Davies - Jericho 200
DESCRIPTION:Author Talk: ‘A Jericho Scrapbook’ with Mark Davies – Jericho 200\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Author Talk: ‘A Jericho Scrapbook’ with Mark Davies – Jericho 200\n\n\n\nThis special event marks the publication of A Jericho Scrapbook: Inside an Oxford Community Saved from Destruction\, originally compiled in 1955 by Constance Hawtrey and published this year with comprehensive notes and appendices by local historian Mark Davies\, as part of the Jericho 200 celebrations. \n\n\n\nFeaturing an astonishingly wide range of reminiscences\, photographs\, sketches\, and ephemera (and even the odd ghost story!) about this sometimes controversial Oxford suburb\, Constance Hawtrey’s A Jericho Scrapbook is now complemented by Mark Davies’ new appraisals of the origins of Jericho\, of the ironworks which became a mainstay of the area\, and of Miss Hawtrey’s own life\, including her time as an early student of St Hilda’s College. \n\n\n\nIn this talk\, Mark will highlight key moments in Jericho’s early history\, from before the University’s purchase of land for its Printing Press in 1825 and the establishment of the future Lucy’s ironworks the same year. \n\n\n\nIt was also in 1825 that the first streets of houses began to replace lush meadowland running down to the Oxford Canal. Jericho’s subsequent unsavoury reputation contrasts with its embrace of cultural icons such as the Pre-Raphaelites\, Thomas Hardy\, Inspector Morse\, Philip Pullman\, and Alice in Wonderland. \n\n\n\nJoin this talk for a journey through Jericho’s inspiring history and discover a unique perspective on Oxford’s ‘dangerously hospitable’ 200-year-old suburb. \n\n\n\nSigned copies of A Jericho Scrapbook: Inside an Oxford Community Saved from Destruction will be available for purchase in the MOX Shop at an exclusive discounted price. \n\n\n\nFurther information \n\n\n\nMark Davies is an Oxford local historian\, public speaker\, and guide. His publications include the social and cultural importance of the city’s waterways (A Towpath Walk in Oxford; Alice in Waterland; Alice’s Oxford on Foot; What a Liberty!)\, historical crime (Stories of Oxford Castle; The Abingdon Waterturnpike Murder)\, and a biography of the first English hot-air balloonist\, James Sadler (King of All Balloons). \n\n\n\nHe is a trustee of the Lewis Carroll Society\, a member of the Society of Authors\, Chair of the Jericho Living Heritage Trust (to which all proceeds of the sale of A Jericho Scrapbook will be donated)\, and on the committee of the Alliance of Literary Societies. \n\n\n\nMeeting point \n\n\n\nThere is step-free\, level entry access to the Town Hall via the entrance closest to Carfax Tower (to the left of the main steps as you face the Town Hall).
