SUMMARY:Author Talk: ‘A Jericho Scrapbook’ with Mark Davies - Jericho 200
DESCRIPTION:Author Talk: ‘A Jericho Scrapbook’ with Mark Davies – Jericho 200\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Author Talk: ‘A Jericho Scrapbook’ with Mark Davies – Jericho 200\n\n\n\nThis special event marks the publication of A Jericho Scrapbook: Inside an Oxford Community Saved from Destruction\, originally compiled in 1955 by Constance Hawtrey and published this year with comprehensive notes and appendices by local historian Mark Davies\, as part of the Jericho 200 celebrations. \n\n\n\nFeaturing an astonishingly wide range of reminiscences\, photographs\, sketches\, and ephemera (and even the odd ghost story!) about this sometimes controversial Oxford suburb\, Constance Hawtrey’s A Jericho Scrapbook is now complemented by Mark Davies’ new appraisals of the origins of Jericho\, of the ironworks which became a mainstay of the area\, and of Miss Hawtrey’s own life\, including her time as an early student of St Hilda’s College. \n\n\n\nIn this talk\, Mark will highlight key moments in Jericho’s early history\, from before the University’s purchase of land for its Printing Press in 1825 and the establishment of the future Lucy’s ironworks the same year. \n\n\n\nIt was also in 1825 that the first streets of houses began to replace lush meadowland running down to the Oxford Canal. Jericho’s subsequent unsavoury reputation contrasts with its embrace of cultural icons such as the Pre-Raphaelites\, Thomas Hardy\, Inspector Morse\, Philip Pullman\, and Alice in Wonderland. \n\n\n\nJoin this talk for a journey through Jericho’s inspiring history and discover a unique perspective on Oxford’s ‘dangerously hospitable’ 200-year-old suburb. \n\n\n\nSigned copies of A Jericho Scrapbook: Inside an Oxford Community Saved from Destruction will be available for purchase in the MOX Shop at an exclusive discounted price. \n\n\n\nFurther information \n\n\n\nMark Davies is an Oxford local historian\, public speaker\, and guide. His publications include the social and cultural importance of the city’s waterways (A Towpath Walk in Oxford; Alice in Waterland; Alice’s Oxford on Foot; What a Liberty!)\, historical crime (Stories of Oxford Castle; The Abingdon Waterturnpike Murder)\, and a biography of the first English hot-air balloonist\, James Sadler (King of All Balloons). \n\n\n\nHe is a trustee of the Lewis Carroll Society\, a member of the Society of Authors\, Chair of the Jericho Living Heritage Trust (to which all proceeds of the sale of A Jericho Scrapbook will be donated)\, and on the committee of the Alliance of Literary Societies. \n\n\n\nMeeting point \n\n\n\nThere is step-free\, level entry access to the Town Hall via the entrance closest to Carfax Tower (to the left of the main steps as you face the Town Hall). Inside the Museum\, Museum Makers is accessible via a platform lift to the Galleries and then a lift to the basement. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFrom £5.00 \n\n\n\nTickets are subject to a non-refundable transaction fee of £1.96 and are available to purchase online or at the Museum shop. \n\n\n\nSales from tickets help support MOX’s work to deliver fun and accessible family activities\, community engagement projects\, schools workshops\, exhibitions and special events for Oxford’s people in our Museum spaces. \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nSaturday 04 October 2025 at 11.00am \n\n\n\nRunning time: \n\n\n\n1 hour \n\n\n\nGood to know: \n\n\n\nPlease be aware that photographs will be taken at this event for use in marketing. If you (or a member of your group) would prefer not to be photographed\, please let a member of staff know during the event. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Museum of Oxford\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nThe Museum of Oxford is the only museum dedicated to telling the story of Oxford and its people. SUMMARY:Steven Pinker - The New Science of Harmony\, Hypocrisy\, and Outrage
DESCRIPTION:Steven Pinker – The New Science of Harmony\, Hypocrisy\, and Outrage\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Steven Pinker – The New Science of Harmony\, Hypocrisy\, and Outrage\n\n\n\nThe Harvard Professor and bestselling author of Enlightenment Now and The Better Angels of Our Nature joins us to reveal the power and perils of thinking alike. What do you know that everyone else knows? \n\n\n\nAs a cognitive scientist\, the ultimate subject of Steven Pinker’s fascination is how we think about each other’s thoughts\, ad infinitum. This awareness is called common knowledge – and it has a momentous impact on our social\, political\, and economic lives. \n\n\n\nCommon knowledge can make sense of financial bubbles and crashes\, revolutions that come out of nowhere\, the posturing and pretence of diplomacy\, the eruption of social media shaming mobs and academic cancel culture\, and the awkwardness of a first date. \n\n\n\nBut people also go to great lengths to avoid common knowledge―to ensure that even if everyone knows something\, they can’t know that everyone else knows they know it. And so we get rituals like benign hypocrisy\, veiled bribes and threats\, sexual innuendo\, and pretending not to see the elephant in the room. \n\n\n\nReturning to How To Academy to explore these paradoxes of human behaviour\, Harvard’s most renowned psychologist will invite us to understand the ways we try to get into each other’s heads – and the harmonies\, hypocrisies\, and outrages that result. \n\n\n\nEvery live ticket includes a copy of Steven’s new book\, ‘When Everyone Knows That Everyone Knows…’ (RRP £25.00). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFrom £44.32 \n\n\n\nTickets are subject to a transaction fee of £3.95 \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nWednesday 01 October 2025 at 7.30pm \n\n\n\nRunning time: \n\n\n\n1 hour 50 minutes\, including an interval \n\n\n\nAge guidance: \n\n\n\n14+ at the discretion of a parent or guardian. \n\n\n\nGood to know: \n\n\n\nAll tickets will include one copy of Steven Pinker’s new book “When Everyone Knows That Everyone Knows”. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout New Theatre Oxford\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\nThere has been a theatre on George Street for almost 170 years. SUMMARY:Uncanny: Fear Of The Dark
DESCRIPTION:Uncanny: Fear Of The Dark\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Uncanny: Fear Of The Dark\n\n\n\nFrom the team behind the sell-out show ‘Uncanny: I Know What I Saw’ and ‘Uncanny: Fear of the Dark’. \n\n\n\nAre you scared of the dark? Danny Robins is back with a brand-new live show that investigates the most spine-tingling range of Uncanny stories yet\, as the award-winning BBC paranormal podcast and TV series comes to thrilling\, ghostly life on stage! \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Uncanny: Fear Of The Dark\n\n\n\nChilling\, intriguing and sometimes moving\, prepare to investigate a collection of real-life potentially paranormal mysteries\, as Danny tries to get to the heart of why we\, as humans\, continue to have a fear of the dark. Is it superstition? A remnant of our days as cavepeople huddled round a campfire? Or is there really something lurking out there in the darkness? \n\n\n\nDanny will be joined by experts Dr Ciarán O’Keeffe and Evelyn Hollow to examine ghostly apparitions\, UFO sightings\, a haunted nursery\, strange creatures on lonely country lanes\, and bizarre poltergeist activity in seemingly normal houses. \n\n\n\nThis is NOT an ordinary podcast show. This is story-telling and paranormal investigation at its peak. Using a unique backdrop of sound\, video projection and theatrical magic\, Danny will bring these stories vividly to life with the help of Ciarán and Evelyn\, plus input from you the audience\, as you get the chance to ask your questions and share your own experiences. \n\n\n\nAs always\, whether you are #TeamSceptic\, #TeamBeliever or somewhere in between\, everyone is welcome. \n\n\n\nSo… do you dare to enter the darkness? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFrom £28.50 \n\n\n\nTickets are subject to a transaction fee of £3.95 \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nThursday 19 March 2026 at 7.30pm \n\n\n\nRunning time: \n\n\n\n2 hours 20 minutes\, including an interval \n\n\n\nAge guidance: \n\n\n\n10+ parental advisory. \n\n\n\nWarning: \n\n\n\nThis production contains haze\, smoke effects\, flashing lights\, loud sounds and references to death. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout New Theatre Oxford\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\nThere has been a theatre on George Street for almost 170 years. SUMMARY:Tamesis Unweaving: articulating environmental emotions in the face of ecological degradation
DESCRIPTION:Tamesis Unweaving: articulating environmental emotions in the face of ecological degradation\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Tamesis Unweaving: articulating environmental emotions in the face of ecological degradation\n\n\n\nPollution of the Thames River and its tributaries has reached record levels in the past two years. Locally\, outrage has tended to be mixed with an acute sense of loss\, disempowerment\, frustration\, and grief. Tamesis Unweaving aims to develop ways of addressing and acknowledging these emotions\, through collective discussion\, introspection\, creativity\, and action.   \n\n\n\nThis workshop will focus on the Tamesis robe\, currently on display in the Lower galleries of the OFS\, and use textile art to provide a framework for talking about and processing ecological emotions\, putting names to undefined feelings\, re-stitching our connections to the more-than-human-world in an approachable\, accessible way\, and helping our community find pathways towards taking action\, through citizen science\, art\, and activism. \n\n\n\nLed by artist Anya Gleizer\, the workshop will involve quilting and embroidery\, drawing\, and water-based painting. The results of each workshop will be added (with your permission!) to the Tamesis Robe\, a tapestry garment whose train is a to-scale large-scale map of the Thames Watershed. Over time\, the piece\, and the workshops\, will tour to more communities along the Thames River watershed\, adding further depth to the collective artwork. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFree event \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nSunday 08 June 2025 at 10.00am \n\n\n\nRunning time: \n\n\n\n2 hours \n\n\n\nGood to know: \n\n\n\nThis event is held in association with the Right Here\, Right Now Global Climate Summit\, as part of the Oxford Local Programme of events themed around climate change\, human rights\, and climate justice. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Old Fire Station\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Old Fire Station in Oxford is an arts centre with a unique social mission\, combining creativity with community impact. Expect stories of chimpanzees and astronauts\, of starlight and falcons. We are the neurodiversity of the universe\, a place of many minds and many imaginations.   \n\n\n\nIn his books\, such as The Importance of Being Interested and Normally Weird…Weirdly Normal\, Robin has looked at the psychological and the astronomical\, engaging with artists and astrophysicists. This new show is a celebration of our possibilities in a time when we have given too many platforms to the mean and the bullying\, let us elevate those who strive for beauty and camaraderie.  \n\n\n\nWith Professor Brian Cox\, Robin has presented over two hundred episodes of the Infinite Monkey Cage and toured the arenas of the world. He has won awards for his books\, his comedy\, and his science communication. SUMMARY:Lunchtime Talk: 'Lost in the Woods: The Story of Slade Camp'
DESCRIPTION:Lost in the Woods: The Story of Slade Camp\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Lunchtime Talk: ‘Lost in the Woods: The Story of Slade Camp’\n\n\n\n‘Lost in the Woods: The story of Slade Camp and a rediscovered Oxford community’ \n\n\n\nThe Slade Camp was set out in open fields on the edge of Shotover in the late 1930s as part of the military preparations for war. The camp saw action during WWII: as a training centre\, for housing returning troops from Dunkirk and assisting in demobbing soldiers. \n\n\n\nBut it was after 1945 that the wooden huts and network of tarmacked roads served their most useful function when the camp was used to help deal with the post-war housing crisis. Army buildings became family homes as hundreds of people arrived to set up a new community. \n\n\n\nThe neighbourhood grew and thrived with Shotover Woods becoming a playground for the children who lived there. The last residents left the camp in the early 1970s\, but the history of the place and the people who lived there mirrors the development of modern-day Oxford and tells us much about social and cultural changes in the city. \n\n\n\nJoin Maurice East to hear how ordinary people built a community in the aftermath of war and how the fascinating story was rediscovered during lockdown fifty years later. \n\n\n\nComplimentary tea and coffee will be available to enjoy during the talk. We recommend arriving before the start of the talk if you would like to grab a refreshment. \n\n\n\nSales from tickets help support our work to deliver fun and accessible family activities\, community engagement projects\, school workshops\, exhibitions\, and special events for Oxford’s people in our Museum spaces. \n\n\n\nMaurice East is a local historian who was born and raised in Oxford. He interprets the social history of the city through the lens of growing up as a ‘townie’ and shines a spotlight on stories far off the usual tourist trail. His main area of research is the history of car making at Cowley and how the arrival of industry\, cars\, and blue-collar workers changed Oxford forever in the early twentieth century. \n\n\n\nAccess: \n\n\n\nThere is step-free\, level entry access to the Town Hall via the entrance closest to Carfax Tower (to the left of the main steps as you face the Town Hall). Inside the Museum\, Museum Makers is accessible via a platform lift to the Galleries and then a lift to the basement. \n\n\n\nAccessible toilets are available in the Museum (close to Museum Makers) and in the Town Hall on the ground floor\, before entering the Museum. SUMMARY:Lunchtime Talk: 'Oxfordshire at the Heart of Morris Dancing'
DESCRIPTION:Lunchtime Talk: ‘Oxfordshire at the Heart of Morris Dancing’\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Lunchtime Talk: ‘Oxfordshire at the Heart of Morris Dancing’\n\n\n\nDelve into the centuries-old history of this traditional art form\, and discover how Oxfordshire dancers inspired its revival. With local historian and Morris expert Mike Heaney. \n\n\n\nWhy are Oxford’s streets full of Morris dancers on May Morning? What’s the history of this centuries-old art form? And how did a momentous 1899 Boxing Day meeting in snowy Headington spark renewed interest in this ancient tradition? \n\n\n\nMorris dancing has been a feature of Oxfordshire life for nearly half a millennium. This talk looks at some of the ups and downs of Oxfordshire’s Morris history\, how its dancers inspired the folk revival\, and how to spot the different styles of the teams you might see on the streets of Oxford today\, from men dressed in white to women in clogs and masked dervishes with whirling and clattering sticks. \n\n\n\nMike Heaney spent over forty years of his professional career at the Bodleian Library\, at the same time pursuing his interests in folk customs and local history. He’s a musician for the Eynsham Morris\, having lived in the village for over 25 years\, and is an authority on Morris dancing. His book The Ancient English Morris Dance was published in 2023 and has rapidly been acknowledged as the definitive history of the Morris. \n\n\n\nAccess \n\n\n\nThe doors at the step-free accessible entrance to Oxford Town Hall are undergoing essential maintenance work on Wednesday 16 April 2025.
