SUMMARY:Lunchtime Talk: 'Lost in the Woods: The Story of Slade Camp'
DESCRIPTION:Lost in the Woods: The Story of Slade Camp\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Lunchtime Talk: ‘Lost in the Woods: The Story of Slade Camp’\n\n\n\n‘Lost in the Woods: The story of Slade Camp and a rediscovered Oxford community’ \n\n\n\nThe Slade Camp was set out in open fields on the edge of Shotover in the late 1930s as part of the military preparations for war. The camp saw action during WWII: as a training centre\, for housing returning troops from Dunkirk and assisting in demobbing soldiers. \n\n\n\nBut it was after 1945 that the wooden huts and network of tarmacked roads served their most useful function when the camp was used to help deal with the post-war housing crisis. Army buildings became family homes as hundreds of people arrived to set up a new community. \n\n\n\nThe neighbourhood grew and thrived with Shotover Woods becoming a playground for the children who lived there. The last residents left the camp in the early 1970s\, but the history of the place and the people who lived there mirrors the development of modern-day Oxford and tells us much about social and cultural changes in the city. \n\n\n\nJoin Maurice East to hear how ordinary people built a community in the aftermath of war and how the fascinating story was rediscovered during lockdown fifty years later. \n\n\n\nComplimentary tea and coffee will be available to enjoy during the talk. We recommend arriving before the start of the talk if you would like to grab a refreshment. \n\n\n\nSales from tickets help support our work to deliver fun and accessible family activities\, community engagement projects\, school workshops\, exhibitions\, and special events for Oxford’s people in our Museum spaces. \n\n\n\nMaurice East is a local historian who was born and raised in Oxford. He interprets the social history of the city through the lens of growing up as a ‘townie’ and shines a spotlight on stories far off the usual tourist trail. His main area of research is the history of car making at Cowley and how the arrival of industry\, cars\, and blue-collar workers changed Oxford forever in the early twentieth century. \n\n\n\nAccess: \n\n\n\nThere is step-free\, level entry access to the Town Hall via the entrance closest to Carfax Tower (to the left of the main steps as you face the Town Hall). Inside the Museum\, Museum Makers is accessible via a platform lift to the Galleries and then a lift to the basement. \n\n\n\nAccessible toilets are available in the Museum (close to Museum Makers) and in the Town Hall on the ground floor\, before entering the Museum. Please contact the Museum team if you’d like to talk to a member of staff about your access requirements. Further access information can be found on our page dedicated to access at the museum. \n\n\n\nPhoto consent: \n\n\n\nPlease be aware that photographs will be taken at this event for use in marketing. If you (or a member of your group) would prefer not to be photographed\, please let a member of staff know during the event. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFrom £5.00 \n\n\n\nTickets can be purchased online via Eventbrite (booking fee of £1.13 applies) or at the Museum Shop. \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nWednesday 14 May 2025 at 1.00pm \n\n\n\nRunning time: \n\n\n\n1 hour \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Museum of Oxford\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nThe Museum of Oxford is the only museum dedicated to telling the story of Oxford and its people. Located inside the Oxford Town Hall\, it explores the city’s rich history beyond the university\, focusing on the lives\, industries\, and communities that have shaped Oxford over time. \n\n\n\nThe museum features interactive exhibits\, local artefacts\, and personal stories\, covering topics such as Oxford’s medieval origins\, its diverse communities\, and key moments in its development. It also hosts temporary exhibitions\, events\, and activities for all ages. \n\n\n\nDiscover more about the Museum of Oxford.

SUMMARY:Lunchtime Talk: 'Oxfordshire at the Heart of Morris Dancing'
DESCRIPTION:Lunchtime Talk: ‘Oxfordshire at the Heart of Morris Dancing’\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Lunchtime Talk: ‘Oxfordshire at the Heart of Morris Dancing’\n\n\n\nDelve into the centuries-old history of this traditional art form\, and discover how Oxfordshire dancers inspired its revival. With local historian and Morris expert Mike Heaney. \n\n\n\nWhy are Oxford’s streets full of Morris dancers on May Morning? What’s the history of this centuries-old art form? And how did a momentous 1899 Boxing Day meeting in snowy Headington spark renewed interest in this ancient tradition? \n\n\n\nMorris dancing has been a feature of Oxfordshire life for nearly half a millennium. This talk looks at some of the ups and downs of Oxfordshire’s Morris history\, how its dancers inspired the folk revival\, and how to spot the different styles of the teams you might see on the streets of Oxford today\, from men dressed in white to women in clogs and masked dervishes with whirling and clattering sticks. \n\n\n\nMike Heaney spent over forty years of his professional career at the Bodleian Library\, at the same time pursuing his interests in folk customs and local history. He’s a musician for the Eynsham Morris\, having lived in the village for over 25 years\, and is an authority on Morris dancing. His book The Ancient English Morris Dance was published in 2023 and has rapidly been acknowledged as the definitive history of the Morris. \n\n\n\nAccess \n\n\n\nThe doors at the step-free accessible entrance to Oxford Town Hall are undergoing essential maintenance work on Wednesday 16 April 2025. SUMMARY:Lunchtime Talk: 'Alice's Adventures in Oxford'
DESCRIPTION:Lunchtime Talk: ‘Alice’s Adventures in Oxford’\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Lunchtime Talk: ‘Alice’s Adventures in Oxford’\n\n\n\nAlice’s Adventures in Oxford – Real people as Wonderland Characters (and some who weren’t!) \n\n\n\nWithin the imaginative fantasy of Lewis Carroll’s ‘Alice’ books lie many Oxford realities\, including a number of real people who feature as ‘Wonderland’ characters. \n\n\n\nMany were University acquaintances\, but some were townspeople\, known to either Lewis Carroll or the real Alice (Alice Liddell\, daughter of the Dean of Christ Church). There was ‘one of the thorny kind’\, for instance\, and an eccentric headgear specialist whose dog Alice remembered fondly even when she was eighty years old. \n\n\n\nAdditionally\, author Lewis Carroll was friendly with many Oxford families after the publication of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass. His skill as a photographer and inventor of games made him a popular guest\, including at the homes of families whose names live on as the Oxford institutions of Lucy & Co and Mallam\, the auctioneers. \n\n\n\nJoin local historian\, guide\, and author Mark Davies (a trustee of the Lewis Carroll Society) for a talk that will reveal some pertinent\, surprising\, and long-lasting aspects of Victorian Oxford through the curious medium of the world’s most famous children’s story. \n\n\n\nMark Davies is an Oxford local historian\, public speaker\, and guide. His publications include the social and cultural importance of the city’s waterways (A Towpath Walk in Oxford; Alice in Waterland; Alice’s Oxford on Foot; What a Liberty!)\, historical crime (Stories of Oxford Castle; The Abingdon Waterturnpike Murder) and a biography of the first English hot-air balloonist\, James Sadler (King of All Balloons). \n\n\n\nHe is a Trustee of the Lewis Carroll Society\, a member of the Society of Authors\, Chair of the Jericho Living Heritage Trust\, and on the committee of the Alliance of Literary Societies. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTickets prices: \n\n\n\nFrom £5.00 \n\n\n\nTickets are subject to a transaction fee of £1.13 and are available to purchase online or at the Museum shop. \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nWednesday 12 February 2025 at 1.00pm \n\n\n\nRunning time: \n\n\n\n1 hour \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Museum of Oxford\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nThe Museum of Oxford is the only museum dedicated to telling the story of Oxford and its people. SUMMARY:An Audience with Lucy Worsley on Jane Austen
DESCRIPTION:An Audience with Lucy Worsley on Jane Austen\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout An Audience with Lucy Worsley on Jane Austen\n\n\n\nFollowing her sold-out Agatha Christie tour\, acclaimed historian Lucy Worsley leads us into the life of one of English literature’s most cherished figures. \n\n\n\nFor these live\, beautifully illustrated talks\, Lucy invites audiences to step into the world of Jane Austen\, the beloved author of timeless classics such as Pride and Prejudice\, Sense and Sensibility\, and Persuasion. \n\n\n\nThrough the houses\, places\, and possessions that mattered to her\, Lucy takes a fascinating look at what home meant to Jane and to the women like her who populated her novels.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAn Audience with Lucy Worsley on Jane Austen\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAusten famously lived a ‘life without incident’\, but with new research and insights\, Lucy reveals a passionate woman who fought for her freedom.  \n\n\n\nA woman who\, far from being a lonely spinster\, in fact\, had at least five marriage prospects. But in the end\, refused to settle for anything less than Mr Darcy. \n\n\n\n“It is a truth universally acknowledged” that this is an event not to be missed! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReviews\n\n\n\n\n“This is my kind of history: carefully researched but so vivid that you are convinced Lucy Worsley was actually there at the party – or the parsonage.” —Antonia Fraser. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets are subject to a transaction fee. \n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nAge guidance: 14+No under 14s will be allowed in the venue. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout New Theatre Oxford\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\nThere has been a theatre on George Street for almost 170 years.
