SUMMARY:Percival Everett: The 2026 Esmond Harmsworth Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Percival Everett: The 2026 Esmond Harmsworth Lecture in American Arts and Letters\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Percival Everett: The 2026 Esmond Harmsworth Lecture in American Arts and Letters\n\n\n\nThe Myth of Propositional Content and the Possibility of Fiction \n\n\n\nWhere does meaning reside in fiction\, and how is it constructed when context itself is propositional? How does a culture read and understand when the driving push toward fiction is fueled by voyeurism? \n\n\n\nIn this lecture\, Percival Everett explores how readers generate meaning from narrative\, and how fiction’s interpretive demands are shaped by culture\, perception\, and curiosity. \n\n\n\nEverett argues that the ability to read fiction critically and extrapolate meaning beyond the text is essential to a culture’s capacity for reasoning and empathy. He considers how storytelling operates when driven by voyeurism\, and what this reveals about the ways audiences engage with narrative. \n\n\n\nPresented by the Rothermere American Institute as the 2026 Esmond Harmsworth Lecture in American Arts and Letters\, Everett is a Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award–winning author whose novel James reimagines Adventures of Huckleberry Finn from Jim’s perspective. \n\n\n\nThe lecture continues a distinguished series that has featured leading figures in American literature and criticism\, and forms part of Unfinished Revolutions\, a season tracing the living legacy of 1776. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTickets: \n\n\n\nThis event is currently sold out. DESCRIPTION:Ella Al-Shamahi: Becoming Human\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Ella Al-Shamahi: Becoming Human\n\n\n\nThis is the story of Homo sapiens… us. \n\n\n\nHost of BBC landmark show Human\, Ella Al-Shamahi\, palaeoanthropologist\, TV presenter\, explorer and stand up\, presents a talk on our remarkable origin story. \n\n\n\nOnce upon a time\, we shared this planet with many species of humans – it has been said that our world was a bit like The Lord of the Rings. To start with\, we Homo sapiens weren’t that remarkable; our origins were\, in fact\, rather humble and yet somehow today we are the only ones left. \n\n\n\nBut we didn’t just survive against all odds\, we thrived\, innovated and travelled like no other species of human – becoming the explorer species who built cities\, iPhones and painted the Sistine Chapel. Our success was profound\, but how on Earth did it happen and at what cost? \n\n\n\nElla Al-Shamahi started studying evolution as a creationist and so she interweaves her own story\, demonstrating the power of tribalism not just in the past\, but also in the present. SUMMARY:Danny Dorling: Power\, policy\, health and the price of inequality
DESCRIPTION:Danny Dorling: Power\, policy\, health and the price of inequality\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Danny Dorling: Power\, policy\, health and the price of inequality\n\n\n\nInequality of income influences so much in our society. Because economic inequality is the water we swim in\, we often do not see its influence or notice what kinds of inequality are most harmful. \n\n\n\nThis inequality helps determine who most often gains power; how policies are thought about and formulated; health outcomes for entire countries; and how governments view their role and how people view their governments. \n\n\n\nDanny Dorling is the 1971 Professor of Geography at the University of Oxford. He makes international comparisons and local studies. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFrom £10.00 \n\n\n\nA fee of £1.50 per transaction applies to bookings for this event across all channels – website\, phone and in-person bookings at the Box Office. SUMMARY:Lunchtime Talk: ‘Everybody Out! Industrial action in Oxford between the wars’
DESCRIPTION:Lunchtime Talk: ‘Everybody Out! Industrial action in Oxford between the wars’\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Lunchtime Talk: ‘Everybody Out! Industrial action in Oxford between the wars’\n\n\n\nThe UK General Strike of May 1926 had a profound impact on the entire country. For nine days\, nearly three million trade unionists went on strike in sympathy with nearly a million miners\, whose employers had locked them out because they would not accept steep pay cuts and a longer working day. \n\n\n\nBritain had never seen this level of mass action before\, and the ripples of discontent would stretch out to Oxford: a town which in the 1920s and 30s was experiencing tumultuous industrial\, cultural and social change. \n\n\n\nJoin Maurice East to discover the history of how trade unionism and working-class political activism arrived in the city of dreaming spires. \n\n\n\nComplimentary tea and coffee will be available to enjoy during the talk. We recommend arriving before the start of the talk if you would like to grab a refreshment. \n\n\n\nMaurice East is a local historian who was born and raised in Oxford. He interprets the social history of the city through the lens of growing up as a ‘townie’ and shines a spotlight on stories far off the usual tourist trail. His main area of research is the history of car making at Cowley and how the arrival of industry\, cars and blue-collar workers changed Oxford forever in the early twentieth century. \n\n\n\nAccess  \n\n\n\nThere is step-free\, level entry access to the Town Hall via the entrance closest to Carfax Tower (to the left of the main steps as you face the Town Hall). Inside the Museum\, Museum Makers is accessible via a platform lift to the Galleries and then a lift to the basement. \n\n\n\nPhoto consent \n\n\n\nPlease be aware that photographs will be taken at this event for use in marketing. If you (or a member of your group) would prefer not to be photographed\, please let a member of staff know during the event. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nTickets cost £6.00 and are available online via Plinth or at the Museum shop. \n\n\n\nTickets for this event also include access to the Galleries. \n\n\n\nSales from tickets help support MOX’s work to deliver fun and accessible family activities\, community engagement projects\, school workshops\, exhibitions and special events for Oxford’s people in the Museum spaces. \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nWednesday 13 May 2026 at 1.00pm \n\n\n\nRunning time: \n\n\n\n1 hour \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Museum of Oxford\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nThe Museum of Oxford is the only museum dedicated to telling the story of Oxford and its people. Located inside the Oxford Town Hall\, it explores the city’s rich history beyond the university\, focusing on the lives\, industries\, and communities that have shaped Oxford over time. \n\n\n\nThe museum features interactive exhibits\, local artefacts\, and personal stories\, covering topics such as Oxford’s medieval origins\, its diverse communities\, and key moments in its development. It also hosts temporary exhibitions\, events\, and activities for all ages. \n\n\n\nDiscover more about the Museum of Oxford.
