DESCRIPTION:When the Blackbird Sings\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout When the Blackbird Sings\n\n\n\nAn immersive\, eye-opening\, heart-stirring journey through time. \n\n\n\nDirected by Erica Whyman and written by Natty Mark Samuels\, Helen Eastman\, and Afsaneh Gray. \n\n\n\nThis is the story of Paulette\, who was born in Jamaica\, crossed an ocean to expand her horizons and now\, in 1966\, she is determined to change the world. She hopes you will come along for the ride. \n\n\n\nJoin ‘When the Blackbird Sings’ in Blackbird Leys for a warm welcome and the start of a glorious odyssey through the city of Oxford. You will meet remarkable pioneers\, passionate changemakers\, a patron saint and fellow humans simply trying to survive.  \n\n\n\nYou will be invited to hop aboard a bus to travel back to the 8th Century and forward to the 21st on a quest to find ancestors on whose shoulders Paulette can stand.  \n\n\n\nThe journey will end at the new Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities\, with truth in our mouths and hope in our hearts. \n\n\n\nBefore You Arrive \n\n\n\nThis is a promenade production\, meaning the performance takes place across several locations in Oxford. Audience members will travel between locations primarily by bus\, with one short walking section of approximately 0.75 kilometres. \n\n\n\nThe performance begins in Blackbird Leys\, the starting venue is to be confirmed. Here tickets will be checked on arrival before the show begins. \n\n\n\nPlease avoid bringing large or heavy bags with you. The performance will last 2.5 hours and there will be some drinks and snacks incorporated. \n\n\n\nDuring the Performance \n\n\n\nOnce the show begins in Blackbird Leys\, audience members will board a bus which forms part of the performance itself. The route travels through Temple Cowley\, Cowley and into Oxford city centre. \n\n\n\nAll audience members will have a seat on the bus\, and headphones will be provided so you can hear the performers clearly throughout the journey. \n\n\n\nWhile everything possible will be done to keep the performance running to schedule\, there may occasionally be slight variations to timings due to traffic conditions on Oxford’s roads. \n\n\n\nThe bus will stop on Oxford High Street for a short walking section of the production. One of the locations visited during this section is a faith building (a church). After this\, audiences will reboard the bus for the final journey north along Woodstock Road to the Schwarzman Centre (OX2 6GG)\, where the performance concludes. \n\n\n\nAfter the Show \n\n\n\nAt the end of the performance\, you are welcome to leave directly from the Schwarzman Centre. \n\n\n\nFor anyone who has parked a car or left a bicycle at the starting point\, there will also be the option to take the bus back to Blackbird Leys after the show. It will be ensured that you can return easily to where you began your journey! This is not include in the running time of the show. \n\n\n\nAccessibility \n\n\n\nIf you have any access requirements\, please contact the box office in advance to discuss your needs. The starting venue will be announced soon and communicated to all bookers. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities\n\n\n\n\n			\n				\n			\n		\n\n\n\nSchwarzman Centre for the Humanities is a major new cultural and academic landmark for the University of Oxford\, bringing together seven humanities faculties with performance\, exhibition\, and public engagement spaces under one roof. Located in the Radcliffe Observatory Quarter\, it is designed to foster interdisciplinary collaboration while opening the humanities to a wider public through events\, performances\, and year-round programming. \n\n\n\nAt its heart are world-class venues including a concert hall\, theatre\, cinema\, recital spaces\, and galleries\, supported by flexible teaching and meeting facilities. DESCRIPTION:Museum of Oxford Walks: Beer\, Sausages and Marmalade\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Museum of Oxford Walks: Beer\, Sausages and Marmalade\n\n\n\nThis 90-minute walk led by local historian Liz Woolley will take you on a tantalising tour of the quirky world of food and drink in 19th-century Oxford. \n\n\n\nFrom the ‘Celebrated Oxford Sausage’ to Frank Cooper’s famous ‘Oxford Marmalade’\, Liz will expertly guide you through locations associated with Oxford’s unique food and drink heritage. \n\n\n\nFind out how Oxford’s eponymous delicacies went hand-in-hand with the city’s growing importance as a desirable tourist destination as you visit sites including Morrell’s Lion Brewery\, the 250-year-old Covered Market and some iconic pubs. \n\n\n\nYou’ll also discover the city’s long history of malting and brewing\, and how this important trade contributed to Oxford’s burgeoning industrial economy. Find out how the significant families which controlled these businesses influenced Oxford’s developing economic\, social and political life. \n\n\n\nJoin a Beer\, Sausages and Marmalade walking tour to see Oxford through the eyes of an expert and discover the unique food heritage embedded in the heart of Oxford. \n\n\n\nAs part of the tour\, you will see: Frank Cooper’s Marmalade Factory\, the old Swan Brewery malthouse\, the street that was once described as a ‘dreadful sort of place’ – and more historic Oxford locations. \n\n\n\nAccessibility and further information \n\n\n\nMeeting point: Museum of Oxford shop (located inside the Oxford Town Hall). Please arrive 5 minutes before the start of the walk and check in at the Museum Shop with our friendly front-of-house team.  \n\n\n\nThe walk lasts 1.5 hours.   \n\n\n\nThe itinerary includes cobbled streets\, uneven surfaces\, and narrow pavements. One of the stops involves going through Whatsheaf Yard which is very narrow and has an uneven surface. An alternative route to the next stop is available through St Aldate’s. Please email museum@oxford.gov.uk if you would like to discuss any access requirements ahead of booking a walk.  \n\n\n\nMeet your tour guide: Liz Woolley \n\n\n\nLiz Woolley is a local historian specialising in the history of Oxford’s ‘town’ – as opposed to ‘gown’ – and of the everyday lives of ordinary working people\, chiefly during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Liz has lived in Oxford for forty years and has an MSc in English Local History from the University’s Department for Continuing Education. She is an experienced tour guide\, speaker\, tutor\, researcher\, and writer\, who enjoys helping people discover the perhaps less well-known history of Oxford and its citizens. \n\n\n\nAccess at the Museum \n\n\n\nThe Museum is accessible for wheelchair users\, buggies\, and baby carriers. There is step-free\, level entry access to the Town Hall via the entrance closest to Carfax (to the left of the main steps as you face the Town Hall). Inside the Museum\, Museum Makers is accessible via a platform lift and lift to the basement level.
