DESCRIPTION:Museum of Oxford Walks: Beer\, Sausages and Marmalade\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Museum of Oxford Walks: Beer\, Sausages and Marmalade\n\n\n\nThis 90-minute walk led by local historian Liz Woolley will take you on a tantalising tour of the quirky world of food and drink in 19th-century Oxford. \n\n\n\nFrom the ‘Celebrated Oxford Sausage’ to Frank Cooper’s famous ‘Oxford Marmalade’\, Liz will expertly guide you through locations associated with Oxford’s unique food and drink heritage. \n\n\n\nFind out how Oxford’s eponymous delicacies went hand-in-hand with the city’s growing importance as a desirable tourist destination as you visit sites including Morrell’s Lion Brewery\, the 250-year-old Covered Market and some iconic pubs. \n\n\n\nYou’ll also discover the city’s long history of malting and brewing\, and how this important trade contributed to Oxford’s burgeoning industrial economy. Find out how the significant families which controlled these businesses influenced Oxford’s developing economic\, social and political life. \n\n\n\nJoin a Beer\, Sausages and Marmalade walking tour to see Oxford through the eyes of an expert and discover the unique food heritage embedded in the heart of Oxford. \n\n\n\nAs part of the tour\, you will see: Frank Cooper’s Marmalade Factory\, the old Swan Brewery malthouse\, the street that was once described as a ‘dreadful sort of place’ – and more historic Oxford locations. \n\n\n\nAccessibility and further information \n\n\n\nMeeting point: Museum of Oxford shop (located inside the Oxford Town Hall). Please arrive 5 minutes before the start of the walk and check in at the Museum Shop with our friendly front-of-house team.  \n\n\n\nThe walk lasts 1.5 hours.   \n\n\n\nThe itinerary includes cobbled streets\, uneven surfaces\, and narrow pavements. One of the stops involves going through Whatsheaf Yard which is very narrow and has an uneven surface. An alternative route to the next stop is available through St Aldate’s. Please email museum@oxford.gov.uk if you would like to discuss any access requirements ahead of booking a walk.  \n\n\n\nMeet your tour guide: Liz Woolley \n\n\n\nLiz Woolley is a local historian specialising in the history of Oxford’s ‘town’ – as opposed to ‘gown’ – and of the everyday lives of ordinary working people\, chiefly during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Liz has lived in Oxford for forty years and has an MSc in English Local History from the University’s Department for Continuing Education. She is an experienced tour guide\, speaker\, tutor\, researcher\, and writer\, who enjoys helping people discover the perhaps less well-known history of Oxford and its citizens. \n\n\n\nAccess at the Museum \n\n\n\nThe Museum is accessible for wheelchair users\, buggies\, and baby carriers. There is step-free\, level entry access to the Town Hall via the entrance closest to Carfax (to the left of the main steps as you face the Town Hall). Inside the Museum\, Museum Makers is accessible via a platform lift and lift to the basement level. Accessible toilets are available in the Museum (close to Museum Makers) and in the Town Hall on the ground floor\, before entering the Museum. \n\n\n\nPlease contact the Museum team if you’d like to talk to a member of staff about your access requirements. This insightful 90-minute walk will bring the artistic spirit of mid-19th century Oxford to life\, taking you to the key locations in Oxford associated with the movement and its artists\, and with particular reference to Oxford-inspired paintings. \n\n\n\nYou’ll see where Jane Burden\, embroiderer and muse\, once lived at ‘Hell’s Passage’\, the Oxford Union\, home to Pre-Raphaelite murals and a noteworthy debacle involving Dante Gabriel Rossetti\, Magdalen College Tower and the story of a particular May Morning\, plus more locations significant to the works and lives of John Everett Millais\, William Holman Hunt\, Dante Gabriel Rossetti\, Edward Burne-Jones\, William Morris\, Jane Burden\, Elizabeth Siddall – and not forgetting author-cum-photographer Lewis Carroll – plus their important patrons\, John Ruskin and Thomas Combe. \n\n\n\nThe walk is near-circular\, beginning at the Museum of Oxford and ending outside the Oxford Union (St Michael’s Street). \n\n\n\nJoin a tour of Pre-Raphaelite Artists in Oxford to see Oxford through the eyes of an expert and uncover the artistic histories embedded in our city. \n\n\n\nAccessibility and further information: \n\n\n\nMeeting point: Museum of Oxford shop (located inside the Oxford Town Hall). His publications include the social and cultural importance of the city’s waterways (A Towpath Walk in Oxford; Alice in Waterland; Alice’s Oxford on Foot; What a Liberty!); historical crime (Stories of Oxford Castle; The Abingdon Waterturnpike Murder); a biography of the Oxford pastry cook who was the first Englishman to fly (King of all Balloons); and the insightful A Jericho Scrapbook and Jericho – a Celebration. \n\n\n\nUntil 2020 he had lived on an Oxford residential narrowboat for nearly 30 years\, and he is the Chair of the Jericho (Oxford) Living Heritage Trust. A varied programme of events will take place across the city\, creating a vibrant atmosphere and encouraging people to discover Oxford from new perspectives. \n\n\n\nColleges and university buildings across the city will open their doors\, alongside community groups and local organisations showcasing their work and their place in Oxford’s history. Visitors will also have the opportunity to explore Oxford Preservation Trust sites\, including the Painted Room\, Rewley Road Swing Bridge\, and North Hinksey Conduit House. \n\n\n\nHighlights from previous events include historic sites such as Slade Camp\, the former army training ground that later became home to families displaced after the Second World War\, and Oxford Castleyard\, which hosted demonstrations of heritage skills\, stone carving\, classic cars\, and hands-on screen printing workshops. \n\n\n\nGuided walks revealed overlooked and rarely accessible spaces\, from the geology of Holywell Cemetery to Love Lane\, closed to the public for over a century. Transport and waterway heritage featured prominently\, with heritage bus tours from the Oxford Bus Museum\, a Canal & River Trust pop-up at Isis Lock\, and public access to the Corpus Christi College Barge\, accompanied by an exhibition of historic photographs. \n\n\n\nOxford Open Doors is organised by Oxford Preservation Trust\, an independent charity founded in 1927\, dedicated to enabling public access to Oxford’s historic places. DESCRIPTION:Museum of Oxford Walks: Beer\, Sausages and Marmalade\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Museum of Oxford Walks: Beer\, Sausages and Marmalade\n\n\n\nThis 90-minute walk led by local historian Liz Woolley will take you on a tantalising tour of the quirky world of food and drink in 19th-century Oxford. \n\n\n\nFrom the ‘Celebrated Oxford Sausage’ to Frank Cooper’s famous ‘Oxford Marmalade’\, Liz will expertly guide you through locations associated with Oxford’s unique food and drink heritage. \n\n\n\nFind out how Oxford’s eponymous delicacies went hand-in-hand with the city’s growing importance as a desirable tourist destination as you visit sites including Morrell’s Lion Brewery\, the 250-year-old Covered Market and some iconic pubs. \n\n\n\nYou’ll also discover the city’s long history of malting and brewing\, and how this important trade contributed to Oxford’s burgeoning industrial economy. Find out how the significant families which controlled these businesses influenced Oxford’s developing economic\, social and political life. \n\n\n\nJoin a Beer\, Sausages and Marmalade walking tour to see Oxford through the eyes of an expert and discover the unique food heritage embedded in the heart of Oxford. \n\n\n\nAs part of the tour\, you will see: Frank Cooper’s Marmalade Factory\, the old Swan Brewery malthouse\, the street that was once described as a ‘dreadful sort of place’ – and more historic Oxford locations. \n\n\n\nAccessibility and further information \n\n\n\nMeeting point: Museum of Oxford shop (located inside the Oxford Town Hall). Please email museum@oxford.gov.uk if you would like to discuss any access requirements ahead of booking a walk.  \n\n\n\nMeet your tour guide: Liz Woolley \n\n\n\nLiz Woolley is a local historian specialising in the history of Oxford’s ‘town’ – as opposed to ‘gown’ – and of the everyday lives of ordinary working people\, chiefly during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Liz has lived in Oxford for forty years and has an MSc in English Local History from the University’s Department for Continuing Education. She is an experienced tour guide\, speaker\, tutor\, researcher\, and writer\, who enjoys helping people discover the perhaps less well-known history of Oxford and its citizens. \n\n\n\nAccess at the Museum \n\n\n\nThe Museum is accessible for wheelchair users\, buggies\, and baby carriers. There is step-free\, level entry access to the Town Hall via the entrance closest to Carfax (to the left of the main steps as you face the Town Hall). DESCRIPTION:Museum of Oxford Walks: Oxford’s Rebels and Radicals\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Museum of Oxford Walks: Oxford’s Rebels and Radicals\n\n\n\nOxford University is well known as a bastion of tradition and a training ground for future Prime Ministers\, but how much do you know about the city’s radical past and present? \n\n\n\nOn this two-hour circular walking tour\, you will hear about epic ‘town vs gown’ riots\, fiercely independent medieval women\, determined but doomed Levellers\, acid-sprinkling Suffragettes and the locals who kicked fascists out of the city for good. \n\n\n\nFrom Oscar Wilde\, through Oxfam\, to Rhodes Must Fall\, this tour tells the fascinating and inspiring stories of those who have pushed back against power\, privilege\, colonialism and discrimination throughout Oxford’s thousand-year history. \n\n\n\nThis tour aims to tell the forgotten stories of Oxford’s radicals\, and to spark respectful debate and discussion.
