Come and listen to a guide take you from Saxon times to the present day. The guide will use six objects to explain Oxford’s history\, including the city origins\, the city and the University\, the English Civil War\, literary Oxford\, scientific Oxford and industrial Oxford. \n\n\n\nAn introduction to Oxford’s past \n\n\n\nWhat is it that is unique about Oxford? The city is well known around the world. This tour identifies some of the features that have made the city so special. From the Saxon period when the city was already an important settlement\, through the development of the university\, the important role played by the city in the English Civil Wars\, to more recent features such as the growth of the car industry under the leadership of William Morris\, the Covered Market and the important literary figures linked to the city\, the tour will give you an insight which should stimulate interest in finding out more. The Museum is an ideal starting point for you to discover Oxford’s amazing past. \n\n\n\nArtisan Oxford: Arts\, Crafts\, and Creations \n\n\n\nWhat connects James Bond’s favourite breakfast with the South Pole? How did a small Oxford boutique become the “Holy Grail” of fashion? Encompassing cutting-edge design\, folk frivolities\, and extremely rare architecture\, (not the spire kind); Oxford Arts is unique. Explore our city’s rich creative heritage through a hand-picked selection of artisan objects. \n\n\n\nOxford Night Out \n\n\n\nSince medieval times Oxford has been famous for its vibrant social and cultural scene\, making it one of the best places for a night out in the UK. Where is the oldest LGBTQIA+ pub in the country? \n\n\n\nFind out the answers to these questions – and much more – on this 90-minute guided tour\, uncovering stories from the LGBTQIA+ community throughout the history of Oxford. \n\n\n\nLed by city guide Hannah Field\, you will meet a host of fascinating characters including a ‘lesbian\, Indian princess\, suffragette\, refugee smuggler’\, a flamboyant bus conductor\, a Catholic Saint\, and many more. Learn about local characters\, pubs and clubs of Oxford\, University societies\, Oxford Pride\, and future events. \n\n\n\nA unique opportunity to explore an alternative side of Oxford and current local history research. \n\n\n\nMeeting point: Museum of Oxford shop (located inside the Oxford Town Hall). This unique 90-minute guided walk of Oxford will take you on a scenic tour through Oxford’s past by way of the Saxon Castle and 18th-century canal. \n\n\n\nLed by local historian\, author and former canal boat resident Mark Davies\, this walk will reveal stories from Oxford’s past linked to the castle and canal. You’ll learn of a Norman Empress’s escape from the Castle\, other notable escapes and dramatic executions\, the extraordinary feats of Daniel ‘damnable’ Harris\, and the past and present of Oxford’s historic canal boat community. \n\n\n\nAs part of the tour\, you will see: Swan Island and Oxford’s brewing history\, a view of Oxford Castle and tales of convicts\, Isis Lock and the meeting point of the Thames and Canal\, an extraordinary example of Victorian railway engineering – plus more historic Oxford locations. \n\n\n\nThe walk will begin at the Museum and finish near the canal’s 1790 terminus (Worcester St). \n\n\n\nJoin a Canal\, Castle and Convicts walking tour to see Oxford through the eyes of an expert and discover another side of Oxford’s history. \n\n\n\nMeeting point  \n\n\n\nMuseum of Oxford shop (located inside the Oxford Town Hall). DESCRIPTION:Museum of Oxford Walks: Shakespeare and Oxford\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Museum of Oxford Walks: Shakespeare and Oxford\n\n\n\nNew for 2025\, celebrating the Museum of Oxford’s 50th birthday! \n\n\n\nShakespeare came to Oxford when travelling between work (London) and his family (Stratford-upon-Avon) – what a commute! What was Oxford like during his lifetime? What did he get up to while he was in town? \n\n\n\nThis is an opportunity to pause and look carefully at Oxford city centre\, noticing Elizabethan and Jacobean details you might pass by every day. The tour includes a unique Tudor bedroom above Cornmarket Street\, the famous Painted Room which will be opened specially by Oxford Preservation Trust\, just for us! \n\n\n\nWant to know more about Elizabethan eating and drinking\, entertainment\, and travel? Or the rollercoaster of religious change in Tudor and Stuart England? Led by historian Dr Elizabeth Sandis\, this is a Shakespeare-themed journey through Oxford’s famous streets. \n\n\n\nAt the end there will be an optional 20-minute extension to the tour (included in the price)\, exploring Tudor and Stuart treasures in the Museum of Oxford’s galleries. \n\n\n\nAccessibility and further information \n\n\n\nMeeting point: Museum of Oxford shop (located inside the Oxford Town Hall). Please arrive 5 minutes before the start of the walk and check in at the Museum Shop with our friendly front-of-house team. \n\n\n\nThe walk lasts for approximately 90 minutes and is a circular walk around central Oxford. Length: approximately 1.2 miles / 1.9 km. Two toilet stops are available along the way. \n\n\n\nPlease note the Tudor Painted Room is up a steep flight of stairs without a lift; it is sadly not accessible to wheelchairs. The rest of the tour can be adapted to offer a more wheelchair-friendly route\, avoiding narrow doorways and cobbles (please let us know if you would prefer this option by emailing museum@oxford.gov.uk). \n\n\n\nMeet your tour guide: Elizabeth Sandis \n\n\n\nShakespeare and Oxford\n\n\n\nDr Elizabeth Sandis works at the Ashmolean Museum and is the author of Early Modern Drama at the Universities: Institutions\, Intertexts\, Individuals (Oxford University Press\, 2022). She researches the way in which the Classical culture of Greece and Rome impacted English society and values during the early modern period. With a passion for local history and theatre\, she enjoys translating and staging examples of the kind of plays students were producing in Oxford during the time of Shakespeare. \n\n\n\nAccess at the Museum \n\n\n\nThe Museum is accessible for wheelchair users\, buggies\, and baby carriers. There is step-free\, level entry access to the Town Hall via the entrance closest to Carfax (to the left of the main steps as you face the Town Hall). Inside the Museum\, Museum Makers is accessible via a platform lift and lift to the basement level. Victorian Leisure & Entertainment\n\n\n\nDiscover a different side of Oxford’s urban history on a walking tour through Oxford’s Victorian past. Led by local historian Liz Woolley. \n\n\n\nExplore the Oxford of the Victorian age and find out what Victorian Oxford did for fun on this unique 90-minute circular walking tour visiting the sites of historic entertainment venues in the city centre.  \n\n\n\nLed by local historian Liz Woolley\, this city walking tour will introduce you to a different side of Oxford’s urban history. See the ‘city of dreaming spires’ from the perspective of ordinary townspeople\, who found themselves with leisure time – and the money to spend on it – for the first time.  \n\n\n\nYou will learn about both the rash and the rational sides of Victorian entertainment\, visiting sites including the Pembroke Street Public Baths\, where you could be attended by a “first-class shampooer and teacher of swimming”\, and the YMCA on George Street which promised to guide young men away from the “temptations of city life”.  \n\n\n\nAs part of the tour\, you will see: The Town Hall and Public Library\, the Wilberforce Temperance Hotel (where alcohol was banned)\, The Jolly Farmers Pub\, and the New Theatre – plus more historic Oxford locations!  \n\n\n\nJoin our Rash or Rational? Victorian Leisure and Entertainment Walk to see Oxford through the eyes of an expert and discover a different side to this famous city’s history.  \n\n\n\nPlease note that this tour was previously run under the name ‘Leisure and Entertainment in Victorian and Edwardian Oxford’.  \n\n\n\nAccessibility and further information \n\n\n\nMeeting point: Museum of Oxford shop (located inside the Oxford Town Hall). Please arrive 5 minutes before the start of the walk and check in at the Museum Shop with our friendly front-of-house team.  \n\n\n\nThe walk lasts 1.5 hours.   \n\n\n\nThe itinerary includes cobbled streets\, uneven surfaces\, and narrow pavements. One of the stops involves going through Whatsheaf Yard which is very narrow and has an uneven surface. An alternative route to the next stop is available through St Aldate’s. Please email museum@oxford.gov.uk if you would like to discuss any access requirements ahead of booking a walk.  \n\n\n\nMeet your tour guide: Liz Woolley \n\n\n\nLiz Woolley is a local historian specialising in the history of Oxford’s ‘town’ – as opposed to ‘gown’ – and of the everyday lives of ordinary working people\, chiefly during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Liz has lived in Oxford for forty years and has an MSc in English Local History from the University’s Department for Continuing Education. She is an experienced tour guide\, speaker\, tutor\, researcher\, and writer\, who enjoys helping people discover the perhaps less well-known history of Oxford and its citizens. \n\n\n\nAccess at the Museum \n\n\n\nThe Museum is accessible for wheelchair users\, buggies\, and baby carriers. There is step-free\, level entry access to the Town Hall via the entrance closest to Carfax (to the left of the main steps as you face the Town Hall). Inside the Museum\, Museum Makers is accessible via a platform lift and lift to the basement level. The first theatre was built in 1836\, and a second in 1886. It is now owned by the Ambassador Theatre Group and hosts everything from ballet and opera to musicals. \n\n\n\nOn performance days\, the Box Office opens at noon and closes 15 minutes after the show starts. If there is a performance on a Sunday or Bank Holiday\, Box Office will open 2 hours before the show begins and close 15 minutes after the show starts. \n\n\n\nThere is a large air-conditioned bar with seating located below the Stalls Foyer\, two further bars in the Circle Foyer and an additional one at the back of the balcony. The first theatre was built in 1836\, and a second in 1886. It is now owned by the Ambassador Theatre Group and hosts everything from ballet and opera to musicals. \n\n\n\nOn performance days\, the Box Office opens at noon and closes 15 minutes after the show starts. If there is a performance on a Sunday or Bank Holiday\, Box Office will open 2 hours before the show begins and close 15 minutes after the show starts. \n\n\n\nThere is a large air-conditioned bar with seating located below the Stalls Foyer\, two further bars in the Circle Foyer and an additional one at the back of the balcony. All stocked with an array of drinks and snacks. \n\n\n\nThere is a cloakroom located in the stalls bar. If this is closed\, please speak to a member of staff. £1 per item. The first theatre was built in 1836\, and a second in 1886. In 1934\, the third New Theatre opened. \n\n\n\nThe theatre has been owned by several different companies and undergone several name changes. It is now owned by the Ambassador Theatre Group and hosts everything from ballet and opera to musicals. \n\n\n\nOn performance days\, the Box Office opens at noon and closes 15 minutes after the show starts. If there is a performance on a Sunday or Bank Holiday\, Box Office will open 2 hours before the show begins and close 15 minutes after the show starts. \n\n\n\nThere is a large air-conditioned bar with seating located below the Stalls Foyer\, two further bars in the Circle Foyer and an additional one at the back of the balcony. All stocked with an array of drinks and snacks. \n\n\n\nThere is a cloakroom located in the stalls bar. If this is closed\, please speak to a member of staff. £1 per item.
