Find out how the significant families which controlled these businesses influenced Oxford’s developing economic\, social and political life. \n\n\n\nJoin a Beer\, Sausages and Marmalade walking tour to see Oxford through the eyes of an expert and discover the unique food heritage embedded in the heart of Oxford. \n\n\n\nAs part of the tour\, you will see: Frank Cooper’s Marmalade Factory\, the old Swan Brewery malthouse\, the street that was once described as a ‘dreadful sort of place’ – and more historic Oxford locations. \n\n\n\nAccessibility and further information \n\n\n\nMeeting point: Museum of Oxford shop (located inside the Oxford Town Hall). Please email museum@oxford.gov.uk if you would like to discuss any access requirements ahead of booking a walk.  \n\n\n\nMeet your tour guide: Liz Woolley \n\n\n\nLiz Woolley is a local historian specialising in the history of Oxford’s ‘town’ – as opposed to ‘gown’ – and of the everyday lives of ordinary working people\, chiefly during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Liz has lived in Oxford for forty years and has an MSc in English Local History from the University’s Department for Continuing Education. She is an experienced tour guide\, speaker\, tutor\, researcher\, and writer\, who enjoys helping people discover the perhaps less well-known history of Oxford and its citizens. \n\n\n\nAccess at the Museum \n\n\n\nThe Museum is accessible for wheelchair users\, buggies\, and baby carriers. There is step-free\, level entry access to the Town Hall via the entrance closest to Carfax (to the left of the main steps as you face the Town Hall). DESCRIPTION:Museum of Oxford Walks: Oxford’s Rebels and Radicals\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Museum of Oxford Walks: Oxford’s Rebels and Radicals\n\n\n\nOxford University is well known as a bastion of tradition and a training ground for future Prime Ministers\, but how much do you know about the city’s radical past and present? \n\n\n\nOn this two-hour circular walking tour\, you will hear about epic ‘town vs gown’ riots\, fiercely independent medieval women\, determined but doomed Levellers\, acid-sprinkling Suffragettes and the locals who kicked fascists out of the city for good. \n\n\n\nFrom Oscar Wilde\, through Oxfam\, to Rhodes Must Fall\, this tour tells the fascinating and inspiring stories of those who have pushed back against power\, privilege\, colonialism and discrimination throughout Oxford’s thousand-year history. \n\n\n\nThis tour aims to tell the forgotten stories of Oxford’s radicals\, and to spark respectful debate and discussion. DESCRIPTION:Museum of Oxford Walks: The Lost Streets of St Ebbes\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Museum of Oxford Walks: The Lost Streets of St Ebbes\n\n\n\nOnce a thriving residential area for a working-class community in the heart of Oxford\, the so-called ‘slums’ of St Ebbe’s were designated for demolition after the Second World War. Today\, it is hard to imagine that these buildings and this community ever existed. \n\n\n\nThis 90-minute circular walking tour will bring the lost buildings\, streets and people of St Ebbe’s to life. On the walk\, you will discover the fragments that still remain of a district which once housed thousands\, along with the stories of the people who lived\, loved\, drank\, ate\, worked and shopped there. \n\n\n\nGuided by Maurice East\, local Oxford resident and historian\, you will see the lost streets\, alleyways\, yards and homes come alive amidst the present-day monoliths of the Westgate shopping centre and Speedwell House. \n\n\n\nJoin a tour of the Lost Streets of St Ebbe’s to discover why this community grew\, how it thrived\, and why it was so brutally destroyed. \n\n\n\nAs part of the tour\, you will see: The Wharf House Pub\, one of the last remaining buildings from the historic residential district\, Speedwell Street and the plans to modernise Oxford by clearing a ‘slum’\, three surviving 17th century cottages – and more historic locations that will be brought to life on this walk. \n\n\n\nAccessibility and further information: \n\n\n\nMeeting point: Museum of Oxford shop (located inside the Oxford Town Hall). Visitors will also have the opportunity to explore Oxford Preservation Trust sites\, including the Painted Room\, Rewley Road Swing Bridge\, and North Hinksey Conduit House. \n\n\n\nHighlights from previous events include historic sites such as Slade Camp\, the former army training ground that later became home to families displaced after the Second World War\, and Oxford Castleyard\, which hosted demonstrations of heritage skills\, stone carving\, classic cars\, and hands-on screen printing workshops. \n\n\n\nGuided walks revealed overlooked and rarely accessible spaces\, from the geology of Holywell Cemetery to Love Lane\, closed to the public for over a century. Transport and waterway heritage featured prominently\, with heritage bus tours from the Oxford Bus Museum\, a Canal & River Trust pop-up at Isis Lock\, and public access to the Corpus Christi College Barge\, accompanied by an exhibition of historic photographs. \n\n\n\nOxford Open Doors is organised by Oxford Preservation Trust\, an independent charity founded in 1927\, dedicated to enabling public access to Oxford’s historic places. She hopes you will come along for the ride. \n\n\n\nJoin ‘When the Blackbird Sings’ in Blackbird Leys for a warm welcome and the start of a glorious odyssey through the city of Oxford. You will meet remarkable pioneers\, passionate changemakers\, a patron saint and fellow humans simply trying to survive.  \n\n\n\nYou will be invited to hop aboard a bus to travel back to the 8th Century and forward to the 21st on a quest to find ancestors on whose shoulders Paulette can stand.  \n\n\n\nThe journey will end at the new Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities\, with truth in our mouths and hope in our hearts. \n\n\n\nBefore You Arrive \n\n\n\nThis is a promenade production\, meaning the performance takes place across several locations in Oxford. Audience members will travel between locations primarily by bus\, with one short walking section of approximately 0.75 kilometres. \n\n\n\nThe performance begins in Blackbird Leys\, the starting venue is to be confirmed. Here tickets will be checked on arrival before the show begins. \n\n\n\nPlease avoid bringing large or heavy bags with you. The performance will last 2.5 hours and there will be some drinks and snacks incorporated. \n\n\n\nDuring the Performance \n\n\n\nOnce the show begins in Blackbird Leys\, audience members will board a bus which forms part of the performance itself. The route travels through Temple Cowley\, Cowley and into Oxford city centre. \n\n\n\nAll audience members will have a seat on the bus\, and headphones will be provided so you can hear the performers clearly throughout the journey. \n\n\n\nWhile everything possible will be done to keep the performance running to schedule\, there may occasionally be slight variations to timings due to traffic conditions on Oxford’s roads. \n\n\n\nThe bus will stop on Oxford High Street for a short walking section of the production. One of the locations visited during this section is a faith building (a church). After this\, audiences will reboard the bus for the final journey north along Woodstock Road to the Schwarzman Centre (OX2 6GG)\, where the performance concludes. \n\n\n\nAfter the Show \n\n\n\nAt the end of the performance\, you are welcome to leave directly from the Schwarzman Centre. \n\n\n\nFor anyone who has parked a car or left a bicycle at the starting point\, there will also be the option to take the bus back to Blackbird Leys after the show. It will be ensured that you can return easily to where you began your journey! Liz has lived in Oxford for forty years and has an MSc in English Local History from the University’s Department for Continuing Education. She loves sharing her enthusiasm for the extraordinary history\, culture and people who have shaped our city of dreaming spires. Before becoming a tour guide\, she was a campaigner\, journalist\, activist and theatre-maker working on social and climate justice issues. This experience has led to a fascination with the social\, political and imaginative role that Oxford has played – both good and bad – in the wider history of Britain\, and the world. \n\n\n\nAccess at the Museum \n\n\n\nThe Museum is accessible for wheelchair users\, buggies\, and baby carriers. There is step-free\, level entry access to the Town Hall via the entrance closest to Carfax (to the left of the main steps as you face the Town Hall). Inside the Museum\, Museum Makers is accessible via a platform lift and lift to the basement level. Accessible toilets are available in the Museum (close to Museum Makers) and in the Town Hall on the ground floor\, before entering the Museum. \n\n\n\nPlease contact the Museum team if you’d like to talk to a member of staff about your access requirements.
