DESCRIPTION:Museum of Oxford Walks: The Real Alice in Wonderland\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Museum of Oxford Walks: The Real Alice in Wonderland\n\n\n\n“It doesn’t matter which way you go\,” said the Cat. ” – so long as I get somewhere\,” Alice added … “Oh\, you’re sure to do that … if you only walk long enough.” \n\n\n\nOn this 90-minute circular walking tour of the beautiful Christ Church Meadow\, you will encounter the real people\, places and events behind the creation of the much-loved stories Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Alice Through the Looking-Glass.  \n\n\n\nThe tour this year is especially pertinent in marking 150 years since the publication of Lewis Carroll’s epic nonsense poem\, The Hunting of the Snark. \n\n\n\nThe route will follow waterside paths in Oxford that were familiar to the ‘real’ Alice in Wonderland (Alice Liddell)\, daughter of the Dean of Christ Church\, and to author Lewis Carroll\, who was a lifelong resident of the college. Mark Davies\, Oxford local historian\, author and trustee of the Lewis Carroll Society\, will reveal the history behind the novels as your expert tour guide. \n\n\n\nStopping at significant locations along the riverside\, you will learn about the all-important role of the River Thames in the creation of the Alice books. With reference to striking historical and geographic landmarks and features\, as well as other classics of fantasy literature\, the people\, places and events which inspired the books will be revealed to you. \n\n\n\nJoin a Real Alice in Wonderland Tour to see fiction\, fantasy and history come to life through the eyes of a local expert in Oxford’s history. \n\n\n\nAs part of the tour\, you will see: Christ Church; many locations along the River Thames\, the Cherwell and the Trill Mill Stream which inspired the creation of the stories\, including the departure point of the fateful boat trips on which the story was first told and the house of a hatter (likely The Hatter!). Additionally\, you will see Alice’s ‘Wool and Water’ Shop and have views into Oxford University Botanic Garden\, the inspiration for some other famous works of fantasy fiction. \n\n\n\nPlease note that this tour does not include entry to the buildings of Christ Church. \n\n\n\nAccessibility and further information: \n\n\n\nMeeting point: Museum of Oxford shop (located inside the Oxford Town Hall). Please arrive 5 minutes before the start of the walk and check in at the Museum Shop with our friendly front of house team. \n\n\n\nThe walk lasts for approximately. 90 minutes and is a circular walk around central Oxford. Length: approx. 1.2 miles / 1.9 km. Two toilet stops are available along the way. \n\n\n\nPlease note the Tudor Painted Room is up a steep flight of stairs without a lift; it is sadly not accessible to wheelchairs. His publications include the social and cultural importance of the city’s waterways (A Towpath Walk in Oxford; Alice in Waterland; Alice’s Oxford on Foot; What a Liberty!); historical crime (Stories of Oxford Castle; The Abingdon Waterturnpike Murder); a biography of the Oxford pastry cook who was the first Englishman to fly (King of all Balloons); and the insightful A Jericho Scrapbook and Jericho – a Celebration.  \n\n\n\nUntil 2020 he had lived on an Oxford residential narrowboat for nearly 30 years\, and is the Chair of the Jericho (Oxford) Living Heritage Trust. What did he get up to while he was in town? \n\n\n\nThis is an opportunity to pause and look carefully at Oxford city centre\, noticing Elizabethan and Jacobean details you might pass by every day. The tour includes a unique Tudor bedroom above Cornmarket Street\, the famous Painted Room\, which will be opened specially by Oxford Preservation Trust\, just for us! \n\n\n\nWant to know more about Elizabethan eating and drinking\, entertainment and travel? Or the rollercoaster of religious change in Tudor and Stuart England? Liz has lived in Oxford for forty years and has an MSc in English Local History from the University’s Department for Continuing Education. DESCRIPTION:Museum of Oxford Walks: The Real Alice in Wonderland\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Museum of Oxford Walks: The Real Alice in Wonderland\n\n\n\n“It doesn’t matter which way you go\,” said the Cat. ” – so long as I get somewhere\,” Alice added … “Oh\, you’re sure to do that … if you only walk long enough.” \n\n\n\nOn this 90-minute circular walking tour of the beautiful Christ Church Meadow\, you will encounter the real people\, places and events behind the creation of the much-loved stories Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Alice Through the Looking-Glass.  \n\n\n\nThe tour this year is especially pertinent in marking 150 years since the publication of Lewis Carroll’s epic nonsense poem\, The Hunting of the Snark. \n\n\n\nThe route will follow waterside paths in Oxford that were familiar to the ‘real’ Alice in Wonderland (Alice Liddell)\, daughter of the Dean of Christ Church\, and to author Lewis Carroll\, who was a lifelong resident of the college. Mark Davies\, Oxford local historian\, author and trustee of the Lewis Carroll Society\, will reveal the history behind the novels as your expert tour guide. \n\n\n\nStopping at significant locations along the riverside\, you will learn about the all-important role of the River Thames in the creation of the Alice books. With reference to striking historical and geographic landmarks and features\, as well as other classics of fantasy literature\, the people\, places and events which inspired the books will be revealed to you. \n\n\n\nJoin a Real Alice in Wonderland Tour to see fiction\, fantasy and history come to life through the eyes of a local expert in Oxford’s history. \n\n\n\nAs part of the tour\, you will see: Christ Church; many locations along the River Thames\, the Cherwell and the Trill Mill Stream which inspired the creation of the stories\, including the departure point of the fateful boat trips on which the story was first told and the house of a hatter (likely The Hatter!). Additionally\, you will see Alice’s ‘Wool and Water’ Shop and have views into Oxford University Botanic Garden\, the inspiration for some other famous works of fantasy fiction. \n\n\n\nPlease note that this tour does not include entry to the buildings of Christ Church. \n\n\n\nAccessibility and further information: \n\n\n\nMeeting point: Museum of Oxford shop (located inside the Oxford Town Hall). Today\, it is hard to imagine that these buildings and this community ever existed. \n\n\n\nThis 90-minute circular walking tour will bring the lost buildings\, streets and people of St Ebbe’s to life. On the walk\, you will discover the fragments that still remain of a district which once housed thousands\, along with the stories of the people who lived\, loved\, drank\, ate\, worked and shopped there. \n\n\n\nGuided by Maurice East\, local Oxford resident and historian\, you will see the lost streets\, alleyways\, yards and homes come alive amidst the present-day monoliths of the Westgate shopping centre and Speedwell House. \n\n\n\nJoin a tour of the Lost Streets of St Ebbe’s to discover why this community grew\, how it thrived\, and why it was so brutally destroyed. \n\n\n\nAs part of the tour\, you will see: The Wharf House Pub\, one of the last remaining buildings from the historic residential district\, Speedwell Street and the plans to modernise Oxford by clearing a ‘slum’\, three surviving 17th century cottages – and more historic locations that will be brought to life on this walk. \n\n\n\nAccessibility and further information: \n\n\n\nMeeting point: Museum of Oxford shop (located inside the Oxford Town Hall). On the walk\, you will discover the fragments that still remain of a district which once housed thousands\, along with the stories of the people who lived\, loved\, drank\, ate\, worked and shopped there. \n\n\n\nGuided by Maurice East\, local Oxford resident and historian\, you will see the lost streets\, alleyways\, yards and homes come alive amidst the present-day monoliths of the Westgate shopping centre and Speedwell House. \n\n\n\nJoin a tour of the Lost Streets of St Ebbe’s to discover why this community grew\, how it thrived\, and why it was so brutally destroyed. \n\n\n\nAs part of the tour\, you will see: The Wharf House Pub\, one of the last remaining buildings from the historic residential district\, Speedwell Street and the plans to modernise Oxford by clearing a ‘slum’\, three surviving 17th century cottages – and more historic locations that will be brought to life on this walk. \n\n\n\nAccessibility and further information: \n\n\n\nMeeting point: Museum of Oxford shop (located inside the Oxford Town Hall). DESCRIPTION:About Oxford Open Doors 2026\n\n\n\nOxford Open Doors 2026 is a city-wide heritage weekend celebrating Oxford’s rich history and culture\, offering free public access to nearly 150 buildings and sites normally closed to the public. \n\n\n\nAcross the weekend\, thousands of residents and visitors are invited to explore Oxford’s hidden stories\, from historic landmarks to lesser-known corners of the city. A varied programme of events will take place across the city\, creating a vibrant atmosphere and encouraging people to discover Oxford from new perspectives. \n\n\n\nColleges and university buildings across the city will open their doors\, alongside community groups and local organisations showcasing their work and their place in Oxford’s history. Visitors will also have the opportunity to explore Oxford Preservation Trust sites\, including the Painted Room\, Rewley Road Swing Bridge\, and North Hinksey Conduit House. \n\n\n\nHighlights from previous events include historic sites such as Slade Camp\, the former army training ground that later became home to families displaced after the Second World War\, and Oxford Castleyard\, which hosted demonstrations of heritage skills\, stone carving\, classic cars\, and hands-on screen printing workshops. \n\n\n\nGuided walks revealed overlooked and rarely accessible spaces\, from the geology of Holywell Cemetery to Love Lane\, closed to the public for over a century. Transport and waterway heritage featured prominently\, with heritage bus tours from the Oxford Bus Museum\, a Canal & River Trust pop-up at Isis Lock\, and public access to the Corpus Christi College Barge\, accompanied by an exhibition of historic photographs. \n\n\n\nOxford Open Doors is organised by Oxford Preservation Trust\, an independent charity founded in 1927\, dedicated to enabling public access to Oxford’s historic places. Please arrive 5 minutes before the start of the walk and check in at the Museum Shop with our friendly front of house team. \n\n\n\nThe walk lasts up to 2 hours. \n\n\n\nThe itinerary includes cobbled streets\, uneven surfaces and narrow pavements. The walk includes a few steps down to the University Church gardens; a step-free option is also available here. She loves sharing her enthusiasm for the extraordinary history\, culture and people who have shaped our city of dreaming spires. Before becoming a tour guide\, she was a campaigner\, journalist\, activist and theatre-maker working on social and climate justice issues. This experience has led to a fascination with the social\, political and imaginative role that Oxford has played – both good and bad – in the wider history of Britain\, and the world. \n\n\n\nAccess at the Museum \n\n\n\nThe Museum is accessible for wheelchair users\, buggies\, and baby carriers. There is step-free\, level entry access to the Town Hall via the entrance closest to Carfax (to the left of the main steps as you face the Town Hall). Inside the Museum\, Museum Makers is accessible via a platform lift and lift to the basement level.
