Mark Davies\, Oxford local historian\, author and trustee of the Lewis Carroll Society\, will reveal the history behind the novels as your expert tour guide. \n\n\n\nStopping at significant locations along the riverside\, you will learn about the all-important role of the River Thames in the creation of the Alice books. With reference to striking historical and geographic landmarks and features\, as well as other classics of fantasy literature\, the people\, places and events which inspired the books will be revealed to you. \n\n\n\nJoin a Real Alice in Wonderland Tour to see fiction\, fantasy and history come to life through the eyes of a local expert in Oxford’s history. \n\n\n\nAs part of the tour\, you will see: Christ Church; many locations along the River Thames\, the Cherwell and the Trill Mill Stream which inspired the creation of the stories\, including the departure point of the fateful boat trips on which the story was first told and the house of a hatter (likely The Hatter!). On many days\, the second line will be running too and may feature a pioneering diesel railcar\, a heritage diesel locomotive or a small branchline steam engine. Check the Locomotive Roster to see what will be running on the date of your visit. \n\n\n\n\nStroll around the 1932 Engine Shed housing our unique collection of operational and cosmetically-restored locomotives. Find 5900 Hinderton Hall\, climb onto the footplate and listen to Archie\, the driver\, and Stan\, the fireman\, prepare their loco! With trains not running on Discovery Days\, there is a rare opportunity to see the locomotives up close. \n\n\n\nA colourful Centre Guide helps visitors navigate the site\, from the original 1932 Engine Shed to the impressive collection of preserved locomotives\, including 5900 Hinderton Hall. Guests can step onto the footplate and hear staff in character as they bring the engines to life\, capturing the rhythms of a working steam-era shed. \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nAcross the site\, the Engine Shed atmosphere is carefully recreated\, with sounds and details that evoke daily railway life.
