Busoni) Chaconne from Violin Partita no.2\, BWV 1004 \n\n\n\nJapanese pianist Yuko Sano gave her first international recital at the age of 8 and has since performed at venues across Europe\, South America and Asia. In April 2026\, she made her recital debut at Suntory Hall\, Tokyo\, with the programme that she presents tonight. \n\n\n\nIt is a lovely programme: sunny Mozart\, sparkling Scarlatti\, Chopin strutting proudly\, Schubert’s Theme and Variations\, and the excitement of a UK premiere. Framing all this\, are arrangements of works originally composed for other instruments. \n\n\n\nWidmung is the love song that Robert Schumann gifted to Clara on the eve of their long-delayed marriage. The Chaconne started life as a partita for solo violin – Busoni took just the final movement and transformed it into a wonderfully dramatic and dignified stand-alone piece for piano. A splendid finale. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFrom £15.00 \n\n\n\nAll orders will be subject to a per transaction booking fee of £1.50 \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nSaturday 01 October at 7.30pm \n\n\n\nDoors open at 7.00pm \n\n\n\nRunning time: \n\n\n\n2 hours including an interval \n\n\n\nGood to know: \n\n\n\nBuying a season ticket (top three price bands only)Buy a ticket for every concert in the series\, within the same transaction\, to benefit from a 20% discount. SUMMARY:St John’s International Piano Series: Benjamin Grosvenor
DESCRIPTION:About St John’s International Piano Series: Benjamin Grosvenor\n\n\n\nSofia Gubaidulina Chaconne \n\n\n\nWolfgang Amadeus Mozart Piano Sonata no.13\, K.333 \n\n\n\nLudvig van Beethoven Piano Sonata no.14\, op.27 no.2 ‘Moonlight’ \n\n\n\nInterval \n\n\n\nAlexander Scriabin Piano Sonata no.2\, op.19 \n\n\n\nFerenc Liszt Three Petrarch Sonnets \n\n\n\nFrédéric Chopin Piano Sonata no.2\, op.35 \n\n\n\nBenjamin Grosvenor programmes some all-time favourites – Beethoven’s lovely ‘Moonlight’ sonata for one – but he also springs surprises. The opening Chaconne is by Russian composer Sofia Gubaidulina\, who died recently. \n\n\n\nThe piece was a commission from a prize-winning pianist and\, as Gubaidulina explained\, she kept the pianist’s specific abilities very much in mind as she worked. The result is wonderfully virtuosic. \n\n\n\nScriabin’s reputation for being difficult came late\, his sonata no.2 is readily accessible and filled with delicate imagery. \n\n\n\nThe sea was his inspiration: he has sunlight dancing on waves\, gentle moonbeams in the dark of night and sombre agitation from the depths. The piece is fiendishly challenging\, a treat to hear it performed live. \n\n\n\nAccess to St John’s College Auditorium \n\n\n\nConcert-goers are asked to enter St John’s College via the back gate at 8 Parks Road\, OX1 3PD (shortly before the traffic lights with South Parks Road). This accessible entrance provides quick and direct access to the Auditorium. The gate will be open from 7.00 pm on concert evenings. Please note\, concert-goers will not be permitted access via the St John’s Main Lodge on St Giles. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFrom 30.00 \n\n\n\nAll orders will be subject to a per transaction booking fee of £1.50 \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nWednesday 18 November at 7.30pm \n\n\n\nDoors open at 7.00pm \n\n\n\nRunning time: \n\n\n\n2 hours\, including an interval \n\n\n\nGood to know: \n\n\n\nBuy a ticket for every concert in the series\, within the same transaction\, to benefit from a 20% discount. SUMMARY:St John’s International Piano Series: Paul Lewis
DESCRIPTION:About St John’s International Piano Series: Paul Lewis\n\n\n\nWolfgang Amadeus Mozart Piano Sonata no.6 in D major K284 \n\n\n\nFelix Mendelssohn Variations sérieuses\, Op.54 \n\n\n\nInterval \n\n\n\nAaron Copland Piano Variations (1930) \n\n\n\nWolfgang Amadeus Mozart Piano Sonata no. 11 in A major K331 \n\n\n\nInternationally acclaimed for his Beethoven Cycle and for his Schubert Series\, Paul Lewis has turned his attention to Mozart with a Mozart + world tour. \n\n\n\n“For many years I’ve wanted to spend some time focusing on Mozart’s piano sonatas and have long felt sceptical of the broadly held view that these remarkable works are the poor siblings of his piano concertos….” Paul Lewis \n\n\n\nPaul Lewis reveals the sonatas as compositions of extraordinary vitality\, imagination and originality. He also shows their legacy by seeking out composers who down the centuries have picked up the threads. Last year\, in the first instalment of Mozart +\, Paul paired piano sonatas no.10 and no.14 with pieces by Poulenc and Debussy. \n\n\n\nTonight he programmes piano sonatas nos.6 and 11 alongside seminal sets of variations by Felix Mendelssohn and Aaron Copland. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFrom £14.50 to £49.00 \n\n\n\nAll orders will be subject to a per transaction booking fee of £1.50 \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nThursday 11 February 2027 at 7.30pm \n\n\n\nRunning time: \n\n\n\n2 hours including an interval \n\n\n\nGood to know: \n\n\n\nBuying a season ticket (top three price bands only). SUMMARY:St John’s International Piano Series: Angela Hewitt
DESCRIPTION:Angela Hewitt\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout St John’s International Piano Series: Angela Hewitt\n\n\n\nLudwig van Beethoven \n\n\n\nSonata for Piano no.19 in G minor\, op.49\, no.1 \n\n\n\nSonata for Piano no. 20 in G major\, op.49\, no.2 \n\n\n\nSonata for Piano no.17 in D minor\, op.31\, no.2 ‘The Tempest’ \n\n\n\nInterval \n\n\n\nSonata for Piano no.8 in C minor\, op.13 ‘Pathétique’ \n\n\n\nSonata for Piano no.31 in A-flat major\, op.110 \n\n\n\nBeethoven composed thirty-two sonatas for the piano and Angela Hewitt has recorded them all in nine critically acclaimed albums. She has also given celebrated performances around the world. \n\n\n\nTonight’s selection captures Beethoven across his career. Two short but charming early compositions (they were published a decade after they were written); passion and drama in the iconic ‘Pathétique’; ‘The Tempest’ as he came to terms with his deafness\, and finally op.110\, the penultimate piano sonata. \n\n\n\nIf Beethoven was ever at peace with the world\, it is perhaps at the end of this sonata. \n\n\n\nAngela Hewitt has given many wonderful concerts in the Series\, first at SJE Arts and latterly at St John’s College. It is a thrill to be able to present her in the new Sohmen Concert Hall. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFrom £14.50 to £49.00 \n\n\n\nAll orders will be subject to a per transaction booking fee of £1.50 \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nSunday 16 May 2027 at 6.00pm \n\n\n\nDoors open at 5.30pm \n\n\n\nRunning time: \n\n\n\n2 hours including an interval \n\n\n\nGood to know: \n\n\n\nBuying a season ticket (top three price bands only).
