They have featured in their mother’s moving and personal work since an early age. Devoid of human figures\, the paintings instead speak through objects\, buildings\, and machines—haunting reminders of the people whose lives were shaped by war. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition is enriched by artefacts from the museum’s collection\, offering further insight into how ordinary people endured and adapted to extraordinary times. the Three Perfections\n\n\n\nThis exhibition celebrates the work of Pat Suet-Bik Hui 許雪碧 (b. 1943)\, a US-based Hong Kong artist\, shown alongside others who explore the tradition of the ‘three perfections’ 三絕 – the harmonious blending of poetry\, calligraphy\, and painting. \n\n\n\nFeaturing works by Hui\, her contemporaries\, her teacher Lui Shou-Kwan\, and artists of his generation\, as well as earlier examples from the 17th to 19th centuries\, the exhibition offers a rich context for understanding Hui as both an innovator and a guardian of tradition. \n\n\n\nIn this artistic lineage\, calligraphic brushstrokes carry as much compositional weight as painted forms\, while poetry and imagery combine to create expressions neither can achieve alone. \n\n\n\nHui’s contemporary approach merges abstract and semi-abstract ink and colour washes with understated calligraphy\, inscribing poems that reflect on themes including love\, loss\, and the quiet joys of drinking. of the Work of Paddy Summerfield\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Camera Helps: A Definitive Retrospective of the Work of Paddy Summerfield\n\n\n\nPaddy Summerfield (1947–2024) was a photographer who developed a new psychological vision of photography\, turning the camera on the innermost workings of the human mind and heart. \n\n\n\nDespite an ongoing battle with bipolar disorder\, leading the photographer to continue living with his parents in Oxford\, Summerfield rose to prominence in the 1980s. Later\, his five critically acclaimed publications depicted Summerfield’s most intense and enduring photographic obsessions: desire and alienation. \n\n\n\nThis substantial retrospective of the photographer’s work shows the stages of Summerfield’s creative evolution through comprehensive installations inspired by his five major publications as well as other significant bodies of work. \n\n\n\nHighlights on display include: \n\n\n\n\nThe Oxford Pictures 1968-78\, a series capturing students during the summer term at Oxford. Close in age but feeling like an outsider\, Summerfield found a shared sense of loneliness in his subjects. Though set beside rivers\, college lawns\, and Oxford streets\, the images evoke the insecurities of youth\, including longing\, isolation\, and sexual anxiety\, with solitary figures reflecting his own experience.\n\n\n\nTony Lights Up (2016)\, an unpublished short photo-essay and portrait of ‘Tony’\, a familiar figure at the time to local people\, living in sheltered accommodation. Summerfield accompanied Tony on his daily routine of asking for small change\, laughing at the world around him\, and betting on dogs – portraying his pleasure in the quiet satisfaction of lighting a cigarette.\n\n\n\nMother and Father (Dewi Lewis Publishing\, 2014)\, a moving and poignant journal of the final years of his parents’ sixty-year marriage. From 1997 to 2007\, Summerfield documented his mother’s worsening Alzheimer’s and his father’s unceasing dedication to caring for her.\n\n\n\n\nThe exhibition also offers a glimpse of both the physicality and mastery of Summerfield’s unique and idiosyncratic relationship with the craft of photographic print making. \n\n\n\nThis exhibition is part of Photo Oxford. \n\n\n\nA small display – Paddy Summerfield: Order out of chaos – will be open from the end of August until 30 November in Blackwall Hall. The first theatre was built in 1836\, and a second in 1886. It is now owned by the Ambassador Theatre Group and hosts everything from ballet and opera to musicals. \n\n\n\nOn performance days\, the Box Office opens at noon and closes 15 minutes after the show starts. Groups are run by people with aphasia\, for people with aphasia. \n\n\n\nThe Say Aphasia charity provides support groups across the UK for people with aphasia; a language and communication disability caused by a brain injury like a stroke. Aphasia affects over 350\,000 people in the UK but is little understood or known about by the public. \n\n\n\nIt is the only aphasia charity set up by people with aphasia for people with aphasia; helping them to adapt to their new way of life and regain their independence and confidence. \n\n\n\nAphasia occurs due to injury to the brain such as a stroke. It affects access to language\, resulting in difficulties following conversations\, speaking\, reading and writing. \n\n\n\nGroup Purpose \n\n\n\n\nTo bring people with aphasia or other acquired communication disability together.\n\n\n\nTo help people with aphasia to feel less isolated within their community\, and feel more confident living with aphasia.\n\n\n\nTo provide a safe place where aphasia is understood.\n\n\n\nTo provide a supportive place for people with aphasia to have conversations and socialise.\n\n\n\n\nVolunteers Needed \n\n\n\nThere is a need for friendly volunteers who can: \n\n\n\n\nWelcome attendees\n\n\n\nfacilitate conversation\n\n\n\nHelp with refreshments\n\n\n\nAssist with simple admin or setting up the room\n\n\n\n\nNo experience is required — full guidance is provided\, and volunteers usually help once or twice a month. The events will showcase a range of innovative local historical projects run by\, or in partnership with\, community historians. \n\n\n\nParticipants will learn about the latest new research being conducted on Oxfordshire’s diverse histories\, as well as gain new skills that could help shape personal project ideas. \n\n\n\nOn 21 November\, participants are invited to a workshop offering guidance on conducting oral history interviews and planning their own research projects. The session will cover key topics such as project planning\, research ethics\, and interview techniques\, and is open to both beginners and experienced researchers. \n\n\n\nThe session will be led by two Oxford academics who have extensive experience in researching sensitive historical themes using oral history research methods: \n\n\n\n\nDr Sally Frampton has been working with a range of community mental health organisations (including Restore\, Oxfordshire Recovery College\, and My Life\, My Choice) to develop a long view of the changing nature of mental health treatment across the county. Her team has developed a number of free resources based on their research\, including an oral history archive and teaching resources for schools\, which you can find online via the Oxford Health Histories website.\n\n\n\nDr Suzan Meryem Kalayci thinks and writes about silence in history\, with a particular focus on the events of the Armenian Genocide\, for which she has won several awards. She explores the notions of memory and affect within her work on oral and cultural history.\n\n\n\n\nThe event is free and everyone is welcome\, but please note that the number of spaces available is limited\, so do book in advance.
