SUMMARY:Images of Authority: Portraits Between Iran and Europe
DESCRIPTION:Images of Authority: Portraits Between Iran and Europe\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Images of Authority: Portraits Between Iran and Europe\n\n\n\nThis free exhibition examines the power of portraits in shaping the image of three contemporaneous rulers: Fath Ali Shah Qajar (1797–1834)\, King George III (1760–1820)\, and Napoleon Bonaparte (1799–1814)\, offering a fascinating reflection on the role of imagery in both personal and political life. \n\n\n\nJuxtaposing works on different media from Iran\, Britain\, and France\, the display reveals the strategies these leaders and their image-makers used to convey authority\, ambition\, and personality. \n\n\n\nFor the first time in over a century\, the exhibition also presents two recently restored Qajar paintings\, alongside insights from their conservation discoveries. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking informatio\n\n\n\nPrices: \n\n\n\nFree \n\n\n\nLocation: \n\n\n\nGallery 29 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSelected artworks on display\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Seated Portrait of Fath Ali Shah of Iran retouched & conserved\, about 1798\, oil on canvas © Ashmolean Museum\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Portrait of a setar player\, 1797–1798. SUMMARY:Pat Suet-Bik Hui & the Three Perfections
DESCRIPTION:Pat Suet-Bik Hui & the Three Perfections\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Pat Suet-Bik Hui & the Three Perfections\n\n\n\nThis exhibition celebrates the work of Pat Suet-Bik Hui 許雪碧 (b. 1943)\, a US-based Hong Kong artist\, shown alongside others who explore the tradition of the ‘three perfections’ 三絕 – the harmonious blending of poetry\, calligraphy\, and painting. \n\n\n\nFeaturing works by Hui\, her contemporaries\, her teacher Lui Shou-Kwan\, and artists of his generation\, as well as earlier examples from the 17th to 19th centuries\, the exhibition offers a rich context for understanding Hui as both an innovator and a guardian of tradition. \n\n\n\nIn this artistic lineage\, calligraphic brushstrokes carry as much compositional weight as painted forms\, while poetry and imagery combine to create expressions neither can achieve alone. \n\n\n\nHui’s contemporary approach merges abstract and semi-abstract ink and colour washes with understated calligraphy\, inscribing poems that reflect on themes including love\, loss\, and the quiet joys of drinking. \n\n\n\nVisitors will find translations of many inscribed poems and guidance on interpreting the interplay of painting\, calligraphy\, and poetry within individual works. \n\n\n\nHui gifted her paintings to art historian Michael Sullivan\, whose collection was bequeathed to the Ashmolean Museum in 2013. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nPrice: \n\n\n\nFree \n\n\n\nLocation: \n\n\n\nGallery 11 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Painting with Poem by Xin Qiji\, Pat Suet-Bik Hui & Wucius Wong\, 1987\, ink & colour on paper © Ashmolean Museum\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Painting with poem by Paul Ka-Yin Kwok\, Pat Suet-Bik Hui & Paul Ka-Yin Kwok\, 1999\, ink colour on paper © Ashmolean Museum\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Painting with poem by Nara Singde\, Pat Suet-Bik Hui\, 1991\, ink & colour on paper © Ashmolean Museum

SUMMARY:The Drawing Project
DESCRIPTION:The Drawing Project\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Drawing Project\n\n\n\nThe Drawing Project is a collaborative work involving sixteen artists and two paintings from the Ashmolean Museum: The Forest Fire by Piero di Cosimo and The Exposition of Moses by Nicholas Poussin. The aim was to produce drawings that worked collectively as well as individually. \n\n\n\nThe artists produced drawings which were then assembled to become full-scale representations of the original paintings. The four assembled collaborative representations are made of fifteen individually drawn sections. Each artist produced their drawings to scale using a variety of drawing and painting media\, with some also working in collage. \n\n\n\nDuring eight months\, over sixty individual project drawings were produced and then assembled into four large drawings representing the original paintings. \n\n\n\nThe finished assembled works are 1:1 representations of the original paintings; two in colour and two in black and white. Some of the artists have also produced additional work referencing the original paintings. \n\n\n\nAt the Ashmolean Museum\, there’s a wonderful opportunity for both families and adults to attend a workshop inspired by the exhibition. SUMMARY:Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
DESCRIPTION:Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?\n\n\n\nAn Oxford Playhouse Production \n\n\n\nBy Edward Albee \n\n\n\nDirected by Mike Tweddle \n\n\n\nOne evening. Two couples. No place to hide. \n\n\n\nWelcome to the small hours at George and Martha’s – the alcohol is flowing\, the gloves are off\, and the games are just getting started. \n\n\n\nEdward Albee’s multi-award-winning play Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? is a wild\, gripping and darkly funny exploration of the lies we tell to protect ourselves. \n\n\n\nDisillusioned university professor George and his wife Martha invite an unwitting younger couple\, Nick and Honey\, into their home. It’s not long before things spiral\, dragging everyone into the heart of a tempestuous relationship. What starts as a spur-of-the-moment nightcap turns into a psychological showdown. \n\n\n\nEdward Albee’s masterpiece of raw intensity and searing insight is directed by Oxford Playhouse Artistic Director Mike Tweddle. Don’t miss one of the most explosive nights in modern theatre. \n\n\n\nThis landmark production signals an exciting new chapter for Oxford Playhouse under Mike Tweddle’s leadership\, reaffirming its position as a producer of high-quality drama. \n\n\n\nEdward Albee’s unforgettable characters George and Martha were immortalised on screen in the Oscar-winning 1966 film\, brought to searing life by Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor. SUMMARY:The Torpids 2026
DESCRIPTION:The Torpids\, Oxford\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Torpids\n\n\n\nThe Torpids is one of two bumping boat races in Oxford’s rowing calendar. The other is the Summer Eights. \n\n\n\nOxford‘s Torpids take place annually about the 7th week of Hilary Term (around the start of March) on four successive days from Wednesday to Saturday. \n\n\n\nThe racing takes place on The Isis\, a length of the River Thames in Oxford\, which is generally too narrow for side-by-side racing\, so the races follow the ‘Bumps’ format\, a form of rowing race in which several boats chase each other in single file\, where the aim to catch and ‘bump’ the boat ahead to climb the rankings. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor each division\, twelve boats line up at the downstream end of the stretch (near Donnington Bridge)\, each cox holding onto a rope attached to the bank\, leaving around 1.5 lengths between each. The start of racing is signalled by the firing of a cannon. There are three gun signals – a five-minute gun\, a one-minute gun and the starting gun. \n\n\n\nOnce a bump has occurred\, both crews involved in the bump stop racing and move to the side to allow the rest of the division to pass. The ultimate aim of a crew is to become ‘Head of the River’ (top of the first division) and stay there. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIt is possible to ‘over bump’ if the 2 crews in front of your boat bump (and so drop out)\, and your boat can catch the one in front of them. They then swap places for the next race on the next calendar day or the first day of racing in the following year’s competition. \n\n\n\nAs always\, expect the banks of the Isis to be packed full of spectators watching as the oars slice through the serene waters of the Isis. \n\n\n\nOxford University Rowing Clubs is the body within the University of Oxford that has authority over the conduct of all college crews and is responsible for organising inter-collegiate contests. \n\n\n\nIt is a confederation of the college boat clubs and the University squads Oxford University Boat Club (OUBC)\, Oxford University Women’s Boat Club (OUWBC)\, The Oxford University Lightweight Rowing Club (OULRC)\, and the Oxford University Women’s Lightweight Rowing Club (OUWLRC).

DESCRIPTION:1984\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout 1984\n\n\n\nAward-winning Box Tale Soup presents a stunning new adaptation of Orwell’s dystopian classic\, 1984. \n\n\n\nKnown for their ingenious sets and slick storytelling\, Box Tale Soup’s unique puppetry becomes a striking metaphor for Orwell’s chilling vision of power and control. \n\n\n\nThe year is 1984\, perhaps – it is impossible to tell for certain. We are being watched\, Big Brother is everywhere\, truth changes daily\, and everyone conforms. \n\n\n\nBut for Winston Smith\, insignificant cog in the Party’s vast machine\, this half-life is not enough. He dreams of freedom\, but is he the only one? Dreams can be deadly when rebellion begins with a thought. \n\n\n\nFeaturing the voices of Sophie Aldred & Joanna Lumley\, with Simon Russell Beale as the voice of Big Brother. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWatch the trailer\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReviews\n\n\n\n\n“A vital watch.” ★★★★ \n\n\n\nThe List \n\n\n\n\n\n“This thought-provoking\, striking production is as relevant today as when it was first written.” ★★★★★ \n\n\n\nBritish Theatre Guide \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nStandard – £16.00 \n\n\n\nPay More – £20.00 \n\n\n\nPay Less – £12.00 \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nThursday 05 to Friday 06 March 2026 at 7.30pm \n\n\n\nRunning time: \n\n\n\n1 hour 40 minutes\, including an interval \n\n\n\nAge guidance: \n\n\n\n12+ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The North Wall Arts Centre\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nThe North Wall Arts Centre is an an award-winning theatre\, gallery and performing arts centre located in Summertown\, North Oxford.
