SUMMARY:Pat Suet-Bik Hui & the Three Perfections
DESCRIPTION:Pat Suet-Bik Hui & the Three Perfections\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Pat Suet-Bik Hui & the Three Perfections\n\n\n\nThis exhibition celebrates the work of Pat Suet-Bik Hui 許雪碧 (b. 1943)\, a US-based Hong Kong artist\, shown alongside others who explore the tradition of the ‘three perfections’ 三絕 – the harmonious blending of poetry\, calligraphy\, and painting. \n\n\n\nFeaturing works by Hui\, her contemporaries\, her teacher Lui Shou-Kwan\, and artists of his generation\, as well as earlier examples from the 17th to 19th centuries\, the exhibition offers a rich context for understanding Hui as both an innovator and a guardian of tradition. \n\n\n\nIn this artistic lineage\, calligraphic brushstrokes carry as much compositional weight as painted forms\, while poetry and imagery combine to create expressions neither can achieve alone. \n\n\n\nHui’s contemporary approach merges abstract and semi-abstract ink and colour washes with understated calligraphy\, inscribing poems that reflect on themes including love\, loss\, and the quiet joys of drinking. \n\n\n\nVisitors will find translations of many inscribed poems and guidance on interpreting the interplay of painting\, calligraphy\, and poetry within individual works. \n\n\n\nHui gifted her paintings to art historian Michael Sullivan\, whose collection was bequeathed to the Ashmolean Museum in 2013. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nPrice: \n\n\n\nFree \n\n\n\nLocation: \n\n\n\nGallery 11 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Painting with Poem by Xin Qiji\, Pat Suet-Bik Hui & Wucius Wong\, 1987\, ink & colour on paper © Ashmolean Museum\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Painting with poem by Paul Ka-Yin Kwok\, Pat Suet-Bik Hui & Paul Ka-Yin Kwok\, 1999\, ink colour on paper © Ashmolean Museum\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Painting with poem by Nara Singde\, Pat Suet-Bik Hui\, 1991\, ink & colour on paper © Ashmolean Museum

DESCRIPTION:Hackney Colliery Band\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Hackney Colliery Band\n\n\n\nSince 2009\, East London musical pioneers Hackney Colliery Band have pushed the boundaries of brass band conventions\, building a steadfast fanbase with their joyous live shows and slew of heralded releases. \n\n\n\nNow fifteen years deep into their collective journey\, and with some incredible career highlights to note (such as performing to 80\,000 people at the opening of the 2012 Olympic Games in London)\, the 9 piece outfit prepare to announce their 6th full-length offering\, the hotly anticipated ‘Collaborations: Volume Two’. \n\n\n\nWhereas their fifth album ‘Collaborations: Volume One featured a range of World Music legends\, including Grammy-winning Beninese vocalist Angélique Kidjo and godfather of Ethiopian jazz Mulatu Astatke\, ‘Volume Two’ sees HCB focus on songs and singers\, alongside a sprinkling of instrumentals featuring harp\, guitar\, cello\, and even conch shells. \n\n\n\nAs anyone who has attempted any degree of social organisation will attest\, it is no mean feat to gather nine people in one place\, at the same time\, on a semi-regular basis\, never mind taking this group of people all over the world to play instrumental music. \n\n\n\nAdd into the mix an industry where artists are encouraged to find a genre niche and stick to it – advice HCB have joyously ignored for their fifteen-year career – and the community and kinship that HCB have built up over this time seems even more remarkable. \n\n\n\nFrontman/composer Steve Pretty and composers Olly Blackman and Luke Christie say of this release: “It’s a privilege and joy to still be playing together after all these years\, and especially to be pushing each other to be as creative and innovative as we can be. \n\n\n\n“The process of collaborating with so many amazing artists and the freshness that’s brought to the project is endlessly inspiring. Some of this music started life almost a decade ago\, and other tracks are only a few months old\, but we’re so proud of the breadth of musical talent on display with this record.” \n\n\n\nA testament to their tenure and calibre as musicians\, ‘Collaborations: Volume Two’ is an exuberant and original addition to HCB’s already impressive and varied catalogue\, highlighting their restlessly collaborative and creative instincts. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\n£25.00 \n\n\n\nAll prices include any booking fees \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nTuesday 28 April 2026 at 7.30pm \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Theatre Chipping Norton\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nThe Theatre Chipping Norton\, sometimes called The Theatre\, Chipping Norton or Chipping Norton Theatre\, is a theatre\, an arthouse cinema\, a gallery and a concert hall in Chipping Norton. \n\n\n\nThe theatre has has 217 seats\, including stalls and a balcony. SUMMARY:Simon Evans Is Staring At The Sun
DESCRIPTION:Simon Evans Is Staring At The Sun\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Simon Evans Is Staring At The Sun\n\n\n\nWith growing evidence that we are living in a Computer Simulation – and a pretty glitchy\, off-brand simulation at that – and the approaching watershed of the AI Singularity looming like a weirdly pixelated cumulo-nimbus on the horizon\, BBC Radio 4 stalwart and veteran of a quarter century of highly acclaimed stand-up comedy Simon Evans is squinting at an uncertain future\, and revisiting the blue remembered hills of his youth. \n\n\n\nThe analogue world of hitch-hiking\, pub bets and hedge porn. Of being able to get properly lost. And also pondering the great thinkers and mystics of the past who had\, it seems\, the same doubts and misgivings about ‘reality’\, back when an adjustable sandal passed for cutting-edge tech. \n\n\n\nNB: Any similarity of Doll in package to Patrick Stewart is coincidental. SUMMARY:Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra: Mozart Requiem
DESCRIPTION:Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra: Mozart Requiem\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra: Mozart Requiem\n\n\n\nMozart Piano Concerto No. 23 in A major\, K. 488 \n\n\n\nMozart Requiem in D minor\, K. 626 \n\n\n\nSarah Dufresne soprano \n\n\n\nClaire Barnett-Jones mezzo-soprano \n\n\n\nJoshua Ellicott tenor \n\n\n\nJonathan Lemalu bass \n\n\n\nOxford Philharmonic Choir \n\n\n\nRainer Küchl guest concertmaster \n\n\n\nMarios Papadopoulos conductor/piano \n\n\n\nMarios Papadopoulos conducts and performs in an evening devoted to the genius of Mozart. The programme opens with Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23\, where Papadopoulos’s delicate yet dynamic piano playing brings this lyrical masterpiece to life. \n\n\n\nThe second half of the concert features Mozart’s Requiem\, a profound and dramatic work\, performed by the Oxford Philharmonic Choir\, capturing both the composer’s deep spirituality and his unparalleled gift for orchestral and choral texture. \n\n\n\nThis performance includes the world premiere live performance of Robert Saxton’s Agnus Dei for the Requiem by Mozart\, written in 2017 for a projected TV drama. The writer/producer Peter Kosminsky (who had directed Wolf Hall) wanted a ‘darker’ Agnus Dei in the manner of late Mozart\, replacing the very beautiful movement by Mozart’s pupil\, Süssmayr. \n\n\n\nMozart: Requiem but still no peace \n\n\n\nLeft incomplete on his death\, Mozart’s setting of the Requiem Mass has been one of the most debated and argued-over works in the history of music. Nicholas Kenyon explores the turbulent background to the piece and the many versions of it that exist today. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFrom £18.00 \n\n\n\n(Students from £5.00) \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nThursday 30 April 2026 at 7.00pm \n\n\n\nGood to know: \n\n\n\nPre-concert talk given by Sir Nicholas Kenyon at 6.00pm

SUMMARY:May Morning 2026
DESCRIPTION:May Morning. Image: Magdalen bridge looking towards central Oxford with Magdalen Tower in the background\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout May Morning 2025\n\n\n\nMay Morning is an annual event in Oxford\, held on 01 May – a tradition stretching back over 500 years. \n\n\n\nA centuries-old Oxford tradition \n\n\n\nMay Morning returns on Friday 01 May 2026\, continuing a tradition that has been celebrated in Oxford for over 500 years. Each year\, students\, residents and visitors gather to welcome the first day of May with music\, procession and revelry in the heart of the city. \n\n\n\nMusic and ceremony at Magdalen Tower \n\n\n\nFrom around 5.00am\, crowds start assembling under Magdalen Tower\, along the High Street\, and on Magdalen Bridge. Students and fellows of Magdalen College gather in the college cloisters and atop the college towers in preparation for the main event. \n\n\n\nAt 6.00am\, the Magdalen College Choir perform the Hymnus Eucharisticus\, a hymn composed in the 17th century by the College’s choirmaster Benjamin Rogers\, from the top of the 144ft tower. The choir also sings three traditional madrigals\, including the perennial favourite Now Is the Month of Maying\, alongside prayers for the city led by the Dean of Divinity. \n\n\n\nWhen the choir concludes\, the Magdalen Tower bells ring for around 20 minutes\, marking the start of the day’s celebrations. A procession moves from Magdalen Bridge up the High Street and into the city centre\, setting the tone for hours of dancing\, music\, and spontaneous festivities that bring Oxford’s communities together. \n\n\n\nDancing and revelry across the city \n\n\n\nTraditionally\, May Morning features Morris dancing on Broad Street\, Catte Street\, under the Bridge of Sighs\, in front of St John’s College on St Giles\, and on the forecourt of the Ashmolean Museum. Highland dancing can be seen in Radcliffe Square\, between the University Church and the Radcliffe Camera. \n\n\n\nRecent history \n\n\n\nDuring the pandemic\, May Morning 2020 moved online\, with choir members recording remotely\, and a similar online celebration took place in 2021. Following restrictions\, May Morning 2022 drew enormous crowds\, particularly as it fell on a weekend. \n\n\n\nIn past decades\, there was a tradition of students jumping into the rather shallow River Cherwell from Magdalen Bridge\, but this was discontinued in 2005 for safety reasons\, after several students were injured. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGood to know\n\n\n\n\nA crowd management system will be in place to ensure a safe and enjoyable morning for everyone.\n\n\n\nLook out for stewards and signage guiding you to viewing spots.\n\n\n\nIt’s important to follow any instructions from stewards\, who are there to help you and others enjoy the experience.\n\n\n\nSpecific viewing areas for wheelchair users\, families with young children\, and those with buggies are set up in the Magdalen College School car park and Rose Lane.\n\n\n\nExpect road closures from 2am to 9am on May Morning\, affecting all traffic\, including bicycles\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGallery

You can see painting\, photography\, textiles\, sculpture\, ceramics\, glass\, mosaics\, jewellery\, woodworking\, and contemporary installations. Many artists offer demonstrations or encourage visitors to try their hand\, providing a rare opportunity to engage directly with the creative process. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Oxfordshire Artweeks\n\n\n\nOxfordshire Artweeks is the UK’s oldest and largest artist open studios and pop-up exhibition event. \n\n\n\nThe Artweeks festival is Oxfordshire’s largest visual arts festival and the UK’s oldest and biggest Open Studios event. It is a three-week not-for-profit celebration in May each year of the county’s artistic and creative talent encompassing the visual arts in their broadest sense. \n\n\n\nUsually\, around 1\,500 artists open the doors to their homes and studios or participate in pop-up exhibitions and welcome the public to see their creations and watch them work. Over 100\,000 people visit Artweeks exhibitions each year\, and a million pounds of art changes hands. \n\n\n\nIn previous years\, visitors have been able to immerse themselves in a giant wild-flower meadow of paint at Oxford’s North Wall\, marvel at shimmering glass meteorites in Kidlington or take a trip into the past with jewellery inspired by archaeology or the stunning mosaics by Becky Paton. \n\n\n\nVisitors could see traditional blacksmithing in Watlington and the Cotswolds\, take an outdoor art trail through Chipping Norton and wander through a stunning five-acre garden in Kingham near Chipping Norton populated with hundreds of sculptures. \n\n\n\nIn Burford\, there were extraordinary hand-sculpted wooden tables to discover\, each like a miniature tree. And in Shipton-under-Wychwood\, animal artist Nic Vickery set up her 1968 caravan studio ‘Gertie’ at a working metalwork studio in nearby Asthall\, where a metal forest grows! \n\n\n\nYou’ll find full details for Oxfordshire Artweeks Festival on the festival website. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important ticketing information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTicketing information\n\n\n\nAll venues are drop-in and are generally open between 11.00am and 6.00pm.
