SUMMARY:The Beekeeper of Aleppo
DESCRIPTION:The Beekeeper of Aleppo\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Beekeeper of Aleppo\n\n\n\nProudly presented by Martin Dodd for UK Productions Ltd in association with Nottingham Playhouse\, adapted by Nesrin Alrefaai and Matthew Spangler\, from the International No.1 Bestseller Christy Lefteri. \n\n\n\n‘I was scared of the bees at first\, but now\, they make me feel alive. They are like a society in complete harmony with itself. Not like people at all\, but maybe what people have the potential to be.’ \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n The Beekeeper of Aleppo\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNuri is a beekeeper; his wife\, Afra\, is an artist. SUMMARY:The Torpids 2026
DESCRIPTION:The Torpids\, Oxford\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Torpids\n\n\n\nThe Torpids is one of two bumping boat races in Oxford’s rowing calendar. The other is the Summer Eights. \n\n\n\nOxford‘s Torpids take place annually about the 7th week of Hilary Term (around the start of March) on four successive days from Wednesday to Saturday. \n\n\n\nThe racing takes place on The Isis\, a length of the River Thames in Oxford\, which is generally too narrow for side-by-side racing\, so the races follow the ‘Bumps’ format\, a form of rowing race in which several boats chase each other in single file\, where the aim to catch and ‘bump’ the boat ahead to climb the rankings. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor each division\, twelve boats line up at the downstream end of the stretch (near Donnington Bridge)\, each cox holding onto a rope attached to the bank\, leaving around 1.5 lengths between each. The start of racing is signalled by the firing of a cannon. There are three gun signals – a five-minute gun\, a one-minute gun and the starting gun. \n\n\n\nOnce a bump has occurred\, both crews involved in the bump stop racing and move to the side to allow the rest of the division to pass. The ultimate aim of a crew is to become ‘Head of the River’ (top of the first division) and stay there. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIt is possible to ‘over bump’ if the 2 crews in front of your boat bump (and so drop out)\, and your boat can catch the one in front of them. They then swap places for the next race on the next calendar day or the first day of racing in the following year’s competition. \n\n\n\nAs always\, expect the banks of the Isis to be packed full of spectators watching as the oars slice through the serene waters of the Isis. \n\n\n\nOxford University Rowing Clubs is the body within the University of Oxford that has authority over the conduct of all college crews and is responsible for organising inter-collegiate contests. \n\n\n\nIt is a confederation of the college boat clubs and the University squads Oxford University Boat Club (OUBC)\, Oxford University Women’s Boat Club (OUWBC)\, The Oxford University Lightweight Rowing Club (OULRC)\, and the Oxford University Women’s Lightweight Rowing Club (OUWLRC).

SUMMARY:May Morning 2026
DESCRIPTION:May Morning. Image: Magdalen bridge looking towards central Oxford with Magdalen Tower in the background\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout May Morning 2025\n\n\n\nMay Morning is an annual event in Oxford\, held on 01 May – a tradition stretching back over 500 years. \n\n\n\nA centuries-old Oxford tradition \n\n\n\nMay Morning returns on Friday 01 May 2026\, continuing a tradition that has been celebrated in Oxford for over 500 years. Each year\, students\, residents and visitors gather to welcome the first day of May with music\, procession and revelry in the heart of the city. \n\n\n\nMusic and ceremony at Magdalen Tower \n\n\n\nFrom around 5.00am\, crowds start assembling under Magdalen Tower\, along the High Street\, and on Magdalen Bridge. Students and fellows of Magdalen College gather in the college cloisters and atop the college towers in preparation for the main event. \n\n\n\nAt 6.00am\, the Magdalen College Choir perform the Hymnus Eucharisticus\, a hymn composed in the 17th century by the College’s choirmaster Benjamin Rogers\, from the top of the 144ft tower. The choir also sings three traditional madrigals\, including the perennial favourite Now Is the Month of Maying\, alongside prayers for the city led by the Dean of Divinity. \n\n\n\nWhen the choir concludes\, the Magdalen Tower bells ring for around 20 minutes\, marking the start of the day’s celebrations. A procession moves from Magdalen Bridge up the High Street and into the city centre\, setting the tone for hours of dancing\, music\, and spontaneous festivities that bring Oxford’s communities together. \n\n\n\nDancing and revelry across the city \n\n\n\nTraditionally\, May Morning features Morris dancing on Broad Street\, Catte Street\, under the Bridge of Sighs\, in front of St John’s College on St Giles\, and on the forecourt of the Ashmolean Museum. Highland dancing can be seen in Radcliffe Square\, between the University Church and the Radcliffe Camera. \n\n\n\nRecent history \n\n\n\nDuring the pandemic\, May Morning 2020 moved online\, with choir members recording remotely\, and a similar online celebration took place in 2021. Following restrictions\, May Morning 2022 drew enormous crowds\, particularly as it fell on a weekend. \n\n\n\nIn past decades\, there was a tradition of students jumping into the rather shallow River Cherwell from Magdalen Bridge\, but this was discontinued in 2005 for safety reasons\, after several students were injured. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGood to know\n\n\n\n\nA crowd management system will be in place to ensure a safe and enjoyable morning for everyone.\n\n\n\nLook out for stewards and signage guiding you to viewing spots.\n\n\n\nIt’s important to follow any instructions from stewards\, who are there to help you and others enjoy the experience.\n\n\n\nSpecific viewing areas for wheelchair users\, families with young children\, and those with buggies are set up in the Magdalen College School car park and Rose Lane.\n\n\n\nExpect road closures from 2am to 9am on May Morning\, affecting all traffic\, including bicycles\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGallery

You can see painting\, photography\, textiles\, sculpture\, ceramics\, glass\, mosaics\, jewellery\, woodworking\, and contemporary installations. Many artists offer demonstrations or encourage visitors to try their hand\, providing a rare opportunity to engage directly with the creative process. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Oxfordshire Artweeks\n\n\n\nOxfordshire Artweeks is the UK’s oldest and largest artist open studios and pop-up exhibition event. \n\n\n\nThe Artweeks festival is Oxfordshire’s largest visual arts festival and the UK’s oldest and biggest Open Studios event. It is a three-week not-for-profit celebration in May each year of the county’s artistic and creative talent encompassing the visual arts in their broadest sense. \n\n\n\nUsually\, around 1\,500 artists open the doors to their homes and studios or participate in pop-up exhibitions and welcome the public to see their creations and watch them work. Over 100\,000 people visit Artweeks exhibitions each year\, and a million pounds of art changes hands. \n\n\n\nIn previous years\, visitors have been able to immerse themselves in a giant wild-flower meadow of paint at Oxford’s North Wall\, marvel at shimmering glass meteorites in Kidlington or take a trip into the past with jewellery inspired by archaeology or the stunning mosaics by Becky Paton. \n\n\n\nVisitors could see traditional blacksmithing in Watlington and the Cotswolds\, take an outdoor art trail through Chipping Norton and wander through a stunning five-acre garden in Kingham near Chipping Norton populated with hundreds of sculptures. \n\n\n\nIn Burford\, there were extraordinary hand-sculpted wooden tables to discover\, each like a miniature tree. And in Shipton-under-Wychwood\, animal artist Nic Vickery set up her 1968 caravan studio ‘Gertie’ at a working metalwork studio in nearby Asthall\, where a metal forest grows! \n\n\n\nYou’ll find full details for Oxfordshire Artweeks Festival on the festival website. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important ticketing information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTicketing information\n\n\n\nAll venues are drop-in and are generally open between 11.00am and 6.00pm. SUMMARY:The Summer Eights 2026
DESCRIPTION:The Summer Eights\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Summer Eights\n\n\n\nOxford’s iconic bumps regatta \n\n\n\nThe Summer Eights is one of two bumping boat races in Oxford’s rowing calendar\, alongside the Torpids. The regatta takes place each May over four successive days\, from Wednesday to Saturday of the fifth week of Trinity Term\, drawing spectators and rowing enthusiasts from across the city and beyond. \n\n\n\nRacing on the Isis \n\n\n\nThe races are held on the Isis\, a stretch of the River Thames in Oxford. The river is generally too narrow for side-by-side racing\, so crews compete in the traditional ‘Bumps’ format. In this style of racing\, boats chase each other in single file\, aiming to catch and ‘bump’ the crew ahead to move up the rankings. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor each division\, twelve boats line up at the downstream end near Donnington Bridge\, with each cox holding onto a rope attached to the bank\, leaving roughly 1.5 lengths between boats. Racing begins with a series of cannon signals: a five-minute gun\, a one-minute gun\, and the starting gun. \n\n\n\nWhen a bump occurs\, both crews involved stop racing and move aside to allow the rest of the division to pass. The ultimate aim is to become Head of the River and retain the top position. It is also possible to over-bump\, where a boat overtakes the one ahead if the two crews in front have already bumped\, swapping places for the following day or next year. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpectator experience \n\n\n\nExpect the banks of the Isis to be packed with spectators\, enjoying the excitement as oars slice through the serene waters. The atmosphere combines tradition\, competition\, and community\, making Summer Eights one of Oxford’s most cherished sporting events. \n\n\n\nThe regatta is organised by Oxford University Rowing Clubs\, the confederation overseeing all college crews and inter-collegiate contests within the University of Oxford. This includes the Oxford University Boat Club (OUBC)\, Oxford University Women’s Boat Club (OUWBC)\, the Oxford University Lightweight Rowing Club (OULRC)\, and the Oxford University Women’s Lightweight Rowing Club (OUWLRC).
