SUMMARY:Fairground Attraction
DESCRIPTION:Fairground Attraction\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Fairground Attraction\n\n\n\nAfter an absence of 35 years\, all four original members of the 80s band Fairground Attraction are reuniting for a 14-date UK tour. \n\n\n\nThe band’s debut\, ‘Perfect’\, went to Number One not only in the UK but in countries all around the world and in 1988\, it won Best Single at The Brit Awards. It has gone on to be regarded as a genuine pop classic. \n\n\n\nLike ‘Perfect’\, ‘What’s Wrong With The World?’ was written by the band’s guitarist Mark Nevin and sung by their brilliant vocalist\, Eddi Reader. In a similar upbeat country-pop vein as their huge hit\, they finally answer the question on everyone’s lips: “What’s wrong with the world?” \n\n\n\nThere is no other band like Fairground Attraction – their use of the guitarrón (a large\, Mexican acoustic bass)\, played by Simon Edwards\, gives the bottom end of their records a warmth and character that combines with drummer Roy Dodds\, Nevin and Reader to create a charming acoustic antidote to all that is modern and digital.  \n\n\n\nWhen they arrived on the scene all those years ago\, their unique sound was described by many as a “breath of fresh air”\, and it is even truer today than it was then. \n\n\n\nAnd where are they now? Who are they now? They are here\, alive and well; they are Fairground Attraction. They survived\, and they’re still smiling. \n\n\n\nFans will also have the chance to see the band live this autumn\, with their first UK tour since they split in 1990. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets are subject to a transaction fee. \n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nAge guidance:Under 16s to be accompanied by an adult 21+. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout New Theatre Oxford\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\nThere has been a theatre on George Street for almost 170 years. SUMMARY:Ben Elton: Authentic Stupidity
DESCRIPTION:Ben Elton: Authentic Stupidity\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Ben Elton: Authentic Stupidity\n\n\n\nFollowing the huge success of Ben Elton’s critically acclaimed sold-out UK tour in 2019\, which marked his return to live comedy after a fifteen-year hiatus\, the undisputed godfather of modern stand-up is going back on the road with his new show – Authentic Stupidity. \n\n\n\nBen Elton first exploded into the national consciousness back in the 1980’s hosting Channel 4’s groundbreaking Saturday Live\, and he’s been setting the standard for gag-filled\, taboo-busting\, tonsil-rattling\, mind-expanding stand-up comedy ever since! \n\n\n\nBen Elton: Authentic Stupidity\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBen says: “Since my last live tour a whole new existential threat has emerged to threaten humanity! SUMMARY:Breaking Ground
DESCRIPTION:Breaking Ground Exhibition at Oxford University Museum of Natural History. Image: Watercolour by Mary Buckland (nee Morland)\, possibly painted in 1817\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Breaking Ground\n\n\n\nFrom the first-ever scientific description of a dinosaur to the revelation that Earth is much older than the Biblical 6\,000 years\, the 19th century saw a network of naturalists forge new ways of thinking about the history of life and our planet. \n\n\n\nBreaking Ground is a new exhibition at the Oxford University Museum of Natural History that charts these significant developments in palaeontology and geology through a cast of characters – both the celebrated and the unsung – who helped to establish new scientific methods and ideas. \n\n\n\nCentred on an Oxford couple – William Buckland\, geologist and palaeontologist\, and Mary Buckland (née Morland)\, a scientific illustrator\, it explores some of the most historically important dinosaur discoveries ever made. \n\n\n\nMarking the 200th anniversary of the first description of a dinosaur\, Breaking Ground presents fossil material from the first three dinosaurs to be scientifically named – Megalosaurus\, Iguanodon\, and Hylaeosaurus\, including the iconic jaw that started it all. \n\n\n\nAlongside these historic specimens are more than 100 other objects\, including fossils\, skeletons\, casts\, and models. There is also archival material such as lithograph prints and watercolour paintings beautifully documenting the fieldwork\, landscapes\, and discoveries made during this fertile period of early palaeontology. \n\n\n\nWhile celebrating these important scientific developments\, Breaking Ground also investigates some inequalities of the period. William and Mary Buckland were married in 1825 and worked together to lay the foundations of modern palaeontology\, though history tends to remember their contributions differently. \n\n\n\nFamiliar names from 19th-century palaeontology are typically those of powerful people associated with certain institutions and publications; lost to history are workers in other\, often colonised\, countries who dug for specimens\, lower-status miners and quarriers around the UK\, and most women\, regardless of class or wealth. \n\n\n\nThese include Mary Anning\, who\, though more recently celebrated\, faced financial struggles for most of her life and\, as a woman\, was unable to join the Geological Society of London or present her own ideas. This is despite making some of the most important fossil discoveries of the century\, several of which will be on display in the exhibition. \n\n\n\nBreaking Ground will also offer the first showcase of items from the newly acquired Buckland archive. The drawings\, prints and paintings made by Mary Buckland include those used in the description of Megalosaurus by William Buckland in 1824. \n\n\n\nAs these illustrations helped to spread understanding of extinct groups of animals and plants among the 19th-century scientific community\, they challenged any literal interpretations of the Bible. A much older planet was revealed\, one that had undergone periods of glaciation – a controversial idea at the time – and in which hyaenas once populated the caves of Britain. \n\n\n\nComplementing the exhibition is a sculptural installation by British artist Angela Palmer. Torus of Time is a visual and tactile symbol of the deep time that was being uncovered by these pioneering 19th-century palaeontologists. An elegant ring of 16 quarry stones drawn from across the United Kingdom\, the piece represents three billion years of geological time. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nPrices:Entry to the Museum is FREE and not ticketed. SUMMARY:Welsh National Opera - Rigoletto
DESCRIPTION:Welsh National Opera – Rigoletto\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Welsh National Opera – Rigoletto\n\n\n\nDepravity and deceit: a life disintegrating… \n\n\n\nStep into the raucous court of the Duke of Mantua\, where Rigoletto\, the court jester\, uses vicious wit to conceal his tormented heart. In a world teetering on the edge of debauchery and deceit\, his only joy is his daughter\, Gilda.  \n\n\n\nWhen the charming but womanising Duke sets his sights on Gilda\, his actions set in motion a tragic chain of events where a father’s love and treachery collide in a crescendo of passion and heartbreak. \n\n\n\nWelsh National Opera\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSet against the backdrop of a decadent and ruthless court\, this heart-wrenching tale explores the intricate web of love\, betrayal\, and the consequences of power.  \n\n\n\nVerdi wrote that Rigoletto was his best opera. With its rich tapestry of emotions and unforgettable melodies\, including opera’s most famous quartet and the instantly recognisable ‘La donna è mobile’\, it’s easy to see why it transcends time and continues to resonate long after the curtain falls. \n\n\n\nSung in Italian\, with English surtitles. \n\n\n\nConductor Pietro Rizzo. \n\n\n\nDirector Adele Thomas. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets are subject to a transaction fee. \n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nDates & times:Thursday 24 October at 7.300pmSaturday 26 October at 7.30pm \n\n\n\nDuration:2 hours 45 minutes\, including an interval \n\n\n\nAge guidance:16+ \n\n\n\nWarning:Contains sex and violence and other scenes that some people might find upsetting. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout New Theatre Oxford\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\nThere has been a theatre on George Street for almost 170 years.
