SUMMARY:Oxford University Museum of Natural History Architecture Tour
DESCRIPTION:Oxford University Museum of Natural History Architecture Tour\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Oxford University Museum of Natural History Architecture Tour\n\n\n\nSee the Oxford University Museum of Natural History in a new light. \n\n\n\nBeyond the specimens and displays\, the Oxford University Museum of Natural History’s building is a source of artistic\, scientific\, and architectural inspiration in itself. \n\n\n\nJoin an enthusiastic volunteer guide for a free tour of the museum’s incredible architecture and discover the decorations and stories hidden in plain sight. \n\n\n\nThe museum building is as spectacular today as when it opened in 1860. It is a striking example of Victorian neo-Gothic architecture\, and its style was strongly influenced by the ideas of 19th-century art critic John Ruskin. \n\n\n\nRuskin believed that architecture should be shaped by the energies of the natural world\, and thanks to his connections with several eminent Pre-Raphaelite artists\, the museum’s design and decoration now stand as prime examples of the Pre-Raphaelite vision of science and art.  \n\n\n\nBear-whales\, angels\, hidden bats – the museum building is chock full of architectural visions of the natural world. A world-first in 1860 and unique to this day\, this building teaches you about the natural world in its very fabric. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nPrice:Free event.
SUMMARY:Joe Hicks
DESCRIPTION:Joe Hicks. Image copyright: David Rutherford\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Joe Hicks\n\n\n\nNewbury singer-songwriter Joe Hicks will be heading out on tour around the UK with his full band for the first time\, with an Oxford date happening at The Old Fire Station on Friday\, 24 November. \n\n\n\n\n\nTake a look at his latest live performance video\, ‘Sail Away’ for a glimpse of what to expect.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMarking one year since his debut album\, ‘The Best I Could Do at the Time’\, Joe released a deluxe edition on 03 November.  \n\n\n\nThis extended version comes with acoustic reworkings and some brand-new live performances of songs from the album\, recorded exclusively for the reissue. The live renditions will also be released in video form\, the latest being ‘Maybe When It’s Over’ is out now (see below)\, with more to follow in the coming weeks. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Getting to bring the band with me for the first time\, visiting as many cities as possible across the UK for my longest and biggest run to date is extremely exciting. Every song I have written since starting this journey has been made with other musicians in mind \n\n\n\n“I’ve wanted to do this for the longest time\, and I’m so grateful that the time has come. We’ve got a lot planned to make the show truly special and I can’t wait for people to see it. See you out on the road!” \nJoe Hicks\n\n\n\nRaised in the rural market town of Newbury\, England\, Joe Hicks blends pop\, blues and folk influences\, combining intricate guitar composition with classic pop song-craft.  \n\n\n\nReleased in September 2022\, ‘The Best I Could Do at the Time’ is an earnest collection of music\, combining Joe’s exceptional songwriting\, influences such as John Mayer and Paul Simon\, and pop sensibilities with a boldness to wear his heart on his sleeve. \n\n\n\nWith the album’s deluxe edition release on 03 November\, expect to hear acoustic reworkings and some brand-new live versions of songs from the album\, recorded exclusively for the reissue.  \n\n\n\nHowever\, the acoustic recordings are not just a standard vocal-and-guitar reimagining – elements such as slide guitar\, multiple harmonies and different guitar grooves come into play\, shining a brand new light on these songs.  \n\n\n\nAs for the live performances\, Joe played a sold-out show at Arlington Arts Centre in his Newbury hometown in late 2022 and decided to bring a full-circle moment to the deluxe album by recording these at the same venue\, providing an exciting glimpse at what to expect for his November 2023 UK tour.  \n\n\n\nThese live renditions will also be released in video form\, the first being ‘One More Step’ is out now\, with the rest to follow in the coming weeks. \n\n\n\n\n“The idea around the deluxe album came initially from the desire to explore some of the songs on my debut album in a more stripped back way and from a different mindset. The Best I Could Do at the Time is\, first and foremost\, a pop album\, and so all the production decisions when making it were about amplifying those elements and leaning into them. \n\n\n\n“The live recordings on the new release were a later addition. I wanted to film some videos to show how the songs from The Best I Could Do at the Time sound and look live with the band behind me. The guys I have playing in the band constantly blow me away with their musicianship and attention to detail\, and that is hopefully very apparent in the videos.” \nJoe Hicks\n\n\n\nFollowing the album’s release in 2022\, Joe’s music received airplay on BBC Radio 2 and BBC Introducing\, being named the latter’s ‘Artist of the Week’ while gaining press support from CLASH Magazine\, Manchester Evening News and Blues Matters Magazine\, among many other titles.  \n\n\n\nHis online following has steadily grown\, having now racked up over 4 million Spotify streams\, and has made live appearances at prolific festivals such as CarFest\, the Big Feastival\, Are You Listening? Festival\, and Pub in the Park. Not only that\, but Joe has supported the likes of Sam Fender\, Seafret\, James Walsh\, Starsailor and Sari Schorr and has now played over 30 Sofar Sounds shows. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReviews\n\n\n\n“A beautiful track” – Reverend Kate Bottley\, BBC Radio 2 \n\n\n\n“This guy is absolutely smashing it\, we can’t wait to see what’s next for him!” \n\n\n\n– Linda Serck\, BBC Introducing Berkshire \n\n\n\n“A performer not to be missed” – Manchester Evening News \n\n\n\n“A highly individual musical identity\, fusing pop with R’n’B\, gossamer melody with liquid guitar work” – CLASH Magazine \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTimes: 8.00pm – support act. 8.50pm – Joe Hicks. 10.00pm – finish
