SUMMARY:Robin Ince – The Universe and The Neurodiverse
DESCRIPTION:Robin Ince – The Universe and The Neurodiverse\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Robin Ince – The Universe and The Neurodiverse\n\n\n\nPresented by The Cosmic Shambles Network  \n\n\n\nA journey through the minds that populate the planet and may populate the universe beyond. \n\n\n\nAn hour of joy and curiosity with the presenter of the multi-award-winning Infinite Monkey Cage. Expect stories of chimpanzees and astronauts\, of starlight and falcons. We are the neurodiversity of the universe\, a place of many minds and many imaginations.   \n\n\n\nIn his books\, such as The Importance of Being Interested and Normally Weird…Weirdly Normal\, Robin has looked at the psychological and the astronomical\, engaging with artists and astrophysicists. This new show is a celebration of our possibilities in a time when we have given too many platforms to the mean and the bullying\, let us elevate those who strive for beauty and camaraderie.  \n\n\n\nWith Professor Brian Cox\, Robin has presented over two hundred episodes of the Infinite Monkey Cage and toured the arenas of the world. He has won awards for his books\, his comedy\, and his science communication. If you have never seen him before\, expect fireworks and undiluted passion.   \n\n\n\nAbout Robin Ince  \n\n\n\nRobin Ince is many things. A comedian\, an author\, a broadcaster\, and a populariser of scientific ideas. The Guardian once declared him a ‘becardiganed polymath’ which seems about right. \n\n\n\nHe is probably best known as the co-host of the Sony Gold Award-winning BBC Radio 4 series The Infinite Monkey Cage with Professor Brian Cox. He has also co-hosted a number of other successful podcasts including They’ve Made Us with Dr Helen Czerski\, Book Shambles with Josie Long\, and An Uncanny Hour\, all three of which are a part of the science and culture entertainment network\, The Cosmic Shambles Network\, which he also co-created with producer Trent Burton. \n\n\n\nAs a standup\, he has toured the world and won three Chortle Awards\, the Time Out Outstanding Achievement Award\, and was nominated for the British Comedy Awards Best Live Show. The Guardian once wrote that\, “When someone writes a history of modern comedy\, they should make room for Robin Ince” and of his latest show The Scotsman described it as an “alchemic mix of enthusiasm\, knowledge and observation.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat the critics say\n\n\n\n\n“You need Robin Ince in your life.” \n\n\n\nNatalie Haynes  \n\n\n\n\n\n“One of the UK’s most accomplished comedians.” \n\n\n\nThe Bookseller  \n\n\n\n\n\n“Joyfully entertaining. Full of warmth\, wisdom\, and affectionate delight in the wonder and absurdity of being human.” \n\n\n\nObserver on I’m a Joke and So Are You  \n\n\n\n\n\n“A delightful and scintillating hymn to science.” \n\n\n\nProfessor Carlo Rovelli on The Importance of Being Interested  \n\n\n\n\n\n“When someone writes a history of modern comedy\, they should make room for Robin Ince.” \n\n\n\nTime Out  \n\n\n\n\n\n“An alchemic mix of enthusiasm\, knowledge\, and observation. An outrageous\, laugh-out-loud rollercoaster.” \n\n\n\nThe Scotsman  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\n£17.00 \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nSaturday 07 June 2025 at 7.30pm \n\n\n\nRunning time: \n\n\n\n2 hours \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Old Fire Station\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Old Fire Station in Oxford is an arts centre with a unique social mission\, combining creativity with community impact. SUMMARY:Tamesis Unweaving: articulating environmental emotions in the face of ecological degradation
DESCRIPTION:Tamesis Unweaving: articulating environmental emotions in the face of ecological degradation\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Tamesis Unweaving: articulating environmental emotions in the face of ecological degradation\n\n\n\nPollution of the Thames River and its tributaries has reached record levels in the past two years. Locally\, outrage has tended to be mixed with an acute sense of loss\, disempowerment\, frustration\, and grief. Tamesis Unweaving aims to develop ways of addressing and acknowledging these emotions\, through collective discussion\, introspection\, creativity\, and action.   \n\n\n\nThis workshop will focus on the Tamesis robe\, currently on display in the Lower galleries of the OFS\, and use textile art to provide a framework for talking about and processing ecological emotions\, putting names to undefined feelings\, re-stitching our connections to the more-than-human-world in an approachable\, accessible way\, and helping our community find pathways towards taking action\, through citizen science\, art\, and activism. \n\n\n\nLed by artist Anya Gleizer\, the workshop will involve quilting and embroidery\, drawing\, and water-based painting. The results of each workshop will be added (with your permission!) to the Tamesis Robe\, a tapestry garment whose train is a to-scale large-scale map of the Thames Watershed. Over time\, the piece\, and the workshops\, will tour to more communities along the Thames River watershed\, adding further depth to the collective artwork. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFree event \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nSunday 08 June 2025 at 10.00am \n\n\n\nRunning time: \n\n\n\n2 hours \n\n\n\nGood to know: \n\n\n\nThis event is held in association with the Right Here\, Right Now Global Climate Summit\, as part of the Oxford Local Programme of events themed around climate change\, human rights\, and climate justice. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Old Fire Station\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Old Fire Station in Oxford is an arts centre with a unique social mission\, combining creativity with community impact. The 1985 revival is the version that finally came to Broadway\, gained significant popularity\, and is the one most commonly performed today. \n\n\n\nSet in the 1930s\, Me and My Girl tells the story of Bill Snibson\, a cheerful and unrefined cockney from Lambeth\, who discovers he is the long-lost heir to the Hareford fortune and title. However\, in order to inherit\, he must conform to the aristocratic lifestyle\, including giving up his girlfriend Sally Smith\, whom he loves dearly. The comedic plot revolves around Bill’s attempts to navigate high society while staying true to himself and his roots. \n\n\n\nHis new-found aunt\, Maria\, the Duchess of Dene\, feels that with a little grooming\, Bill will be suitable to inherit the title – and the money. However\, Bill refuses to accept the title if he cannot keep Sally as his girl. Eventually\, Sally herself is transformed – a la My Fair Lady – and Bill is allowed to inherit the title and keep his girl. \n\n\n\nThe musical features memorable songs such as ‘The Lambeth Walk\,’ which became a major hit and a dance craze of its time. Other popular songs include ‘Leaning on a Lamppost’ and ‘Me and My Girl.’ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nAdult – £22.00 \n\n\n\nSenior Citizen and Student – £21.00 \n\n\n\nChild – £17.00 \n\n\n\nGroup Offer: Three for £60.00 on Wednesday only \n\n\n\nTicket prices include a £1 Restoration Levy\, a £1.50 Booking Fee\, and a 25p Community Fund Levy \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nWednesday 11 to Saturday 14 June 2025 at 7.45pm \n\n\n\nRunning time: \n\n\n\n2 hours 25 minutes \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Kenton Theatre\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nSituated in the centre of Henley-on-Thames\, the Kenton Theatre is the fourth-oldest working theatre in the UK and a registered charity. SUMMARY:Joy of Scything Summer Workshop at Cogges
DESCRIPTION:Joy of Scything Summer Workshop at Cogges\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Joy of Scything Summer Workshop at Cogges\n\n\n\nThis one day course is designed to introduce you to using and looking after an Austrian scythe. The course is suitable for a range of experience levels\, from complete beginners to those who have been using a scythe but feel that it could be working better for them. \n\n\n\nThe structure of the day will be as follows: \n\n\n\n\nIntroduction and familiarisation\n\n\n\nSetting up an Austrian scythe\n\n\n\nMovement and technique\n\n\n\nMowing practice\n\n\n\nSharpening in the field\n\n\n\nMaintenance and peening of the blade\n\n\n\nThere will be a break for lunch at 12.30pm\n\n\n\n\nThe scythe is a highly efficient tool and is regarded as the appropriate technology for a wide variety of situations\, much wider than many would think\, from meadows and reedbeds to allotments and lawns\, in professional and amateur contexts. In addition to its efficiency\, versatility\, outstanding green credentials\, and health benefits for both body and mind\, the scythe is an extremely cost-effective tool. Once set up with a basic kit no further outlay is required\, and maintenance is simple and enjoyable. \n\n\n\nAbout the tutor \n\n\n\nNicole Clough is a Scythe Teacher and regional contact for the Scythe Association of Britain & Ireland. Find out more. \n\n\n\n“I train because I’m passionate about everyone getting a good initial experience with scything. The scythe has had bad press over recent years\, the main implications being that they are hard work\, cause backache\, and are less efficient than their machine equivalents. Yet the truth is quite the opposite. They are easy and a pleasure to use once the basic principles are understood; in fact\, many people fall in love with scything once they have tried it.” \n\n\n\nCourse details \n\n\n\nPlease arrive in time for a 10.00am start. The course is expected to finish by 4.30pm. \n\n\n\nThere will be a break for lunch. Due to the nature of the training\, the course will be held outside in the paddocks and meadow at Cogges\, therefore please wear or bring suitable clothing\, weather protection and stout footwear. Cogges Kitchen cafe will be open from 9.00am\, last orders at 4.00pm.  \n\n\n\nCosts \n\n\n\n6 places are available on this course. \n\n\n\nThe cost of the training is £110 per person\, including lunch.  Refunds are available only if we re-sell your place. \n\n\n\nMost attendees prefer to purchase an Austrian scythe in advance to set up and learn during the course. However\, Nicole has a limited number of training scythes that can be borrowed\, but this must be by prior arrangement\, and an additional hire cost of £20 will apply (contact Nicole in advance at https://joyofscything.uk/contact/). \n\n\n\nAttendees need only the basic Austrian scythe setup\, to include the following: \n\n\n\n\nSnath plus handles\n\n\n\nBlade (for grass and non-woody vegetation)\n\n\n\nScythe ring\n\n\n\nAllen key\n\n\n\n10mm spanner\n\n\n\nSharpening stone (canoe)\n\n\n\nStone sheath or suitable container to hold sharpening stone and water\n\n\n\nWork gloves to use whilst sharpening\n\n\n\n\nRecommended suppliers: Simon Fairlie – Supplier of Austrian Scythes \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTickets prices: \n\n\n\n£110.00 \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nSaturday 14 June 2025 at 10.00am \n\n\n\nRunning time: \n\n\n\n6 hours 30 minutes\, including a lunch break \n\n\n\nLocation: \n\n\n\nOutside in the paddocks and meadow

SUMMARY:Why God Created Lesbians by Clare Summerskill
DESCRIPTION:Why God Created Lesbians by Clare Summerskill\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Why God Created Lesbians by Clare Summerskill\n\n\n\nIn her brand-new one-woman show\, Clare Summerskill attempts to explain the point of the perplexing sexual minority to which she belongs\, asking why lesbians exist? Is it to ease the pressure on cat rescue centres? Is it to ensure that Shibden Hall remains a viable tourist attraction? Or is it to write one-woman comedy shows featuring songs\, standup\, and storytelling? After decades of field research\, she thinks she has the answer.  \n\n\n\nExpect silliness\, satire\, and self-deprecation from crowd-pleaser Clare Summerskill as she hits the road with her funniest show yet. Clare will share the previously unheard story of the lesbian squirrel on the Ark\, forced to take up a complaint about compulsory heterosexuality with Noah himself; and she will finally uncover the Almighty’s real opinion about women-loving-women.    \n\n\n\nA packed comedy show with original songs from ‘one of the funniest women in the country’ (What’s On) with a keen fanbase across the UK (gay and straight!). Clare has previously written for BBC Radio 4’s Weekending and Heated Rollers and toured her shows to theatres in the UK and the US.    \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat the critics say\n\n\n\n\n“Engaging and Charming.”  \n\n\n\nTime Out  \n\n\n\n\n\n“A lesbian Victoria Wood.”  \n\n\n\nWoman’s Hour BBC Radio 4   \n\n\n\n\n\n“Fantastic show\, hilarious\, witty\, intelligent and moving.” ★★★★★ \n\n\n\nAudience member  \n\n\n\n\n\n“What are you waiting for?
