SUMMARY:Sparks
DESCRIPTION:Sparks at New Theatre Oxford\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Sparks\n\n\n\nLevels of interest in the work of Sparks are at heights unsurpassed in their 50+ year career\, with the ultimate cult band now centre stage in the full beam of the spotlight. \n\n\n\nMost people\, with even a passing acquaintance with Sparks\, will know the basics by now how Californian brothers Ron and Russell Mael\, both students at UCLA\, began making music together in the late Sixties\, originally under the name Halfnelson.  \n\n\n\nHow their Top Of The Pops debut with This Town Ain’t Big Enough For Both Of Us stunned a generation and nearly scored them a UK No.1. How their career moved through many phases\, including (but not limited to) art rock\, glam\, big band swing\, electro-disco\, new wave and synthpop\, taking in collaborations with Todd Rundgren\, Les Rita Mitsouko\, Tony Visconti Franz Ferdinand and Giorgio Moroder. \n\n\n\nHow keyboardist and songwriter Ron’s intricate staccato arrangements combine with the hysteria-pitch falsetto in which Russell delivers his brother’s always-on-point lyrics. How Ron’s stillness and stern\, intimidating visage contrasts onstage with Russell’s hyperactivity.  \n\n\n\nHow their popularity has spiked unpredictably in different territories at different times – Britain\, France\, Germany\, Scandinavia\, Japan\, and their homeland United States. And how the influence of “the greatest band you’ve never heard of” or “your favourite band’s favourite band” has been recognised by successive generations of artists from Joy Division to Duran Duran to Depeche Mode to Bjork to Beck to The Darkness and beyond. \n\n\n\nNow into their sixth decade of music making\, Sparks have never been more relevant. \n\n\n\nOnce more Top 10 regulars\, with studio albums Hippopotamus (2017) and A Steady Drip\, Drip\, Drip (2020) both reaching No.7 in the UK and receiving global acclaim\, the lauded career-spanning documentary film The Sparks Brothers\, directed by Edgar Wright (Shaun Of The Dead\, Hot Fuzz\, Baby Driver) and released in 2021\, brought an awareness of Sparks to parts they previously hadn’t reached. \n\n\n\nSparks’ 2021 film musical Annette\, directed by Leos Carax and starring Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard\, was showered with awards\, especially in France\, where Carax won Best Director at Cannes and where the film won three Lumières Awards and five César Awards\, including Best Original Music for Ron and Russell. Focus Features have recently announced the studio is developing X-Crucior\, a musical epic written by Ron and Russell. \n\n\n\nA new studio album is due in 2023. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTicketing information\n\n\n\nPrices: £40.72Tickets are subject to a transaction fee \n\n\n\nAge guidance:Under 16’s to be accompanied by an adult 21+No under 5’s \n\n\n\nDoors open: 7.00pm \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout New Theatre Oxford\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\nThere has been a theatre on George Street for almost 170 years. SUMMARY:The Sensational 60s Experience
DESCRIPTION:The Sensational 60s Experience at New Theatre Oxford\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Sensational 60s Experience\n\n\n\nWith a brand-new production for 2023\, this is the musical phenomenon of 2023 and the festival of nostalgia. The show\, with the definite feelgood factor\, will transport you back to that magical decade that was the 1960s.  \n\n\n\nWhether you come to relive your childhood memories or you just want to see what your parents have been raving about for all these years\, this is the show to see. These legends of the 60s will deliver a night never to be forgotten. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Sensational 60s Experience at New Theatre Oxford\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDOZY BEAKY MICK & TICH. Originally called Dave Dee And The Bostons formed in 1961. Changing their name to Dave Dee\, Dozy Beaky Mick and Tich in 1964. In 1966 the band were on the charts for 50 weeks out of 52. Record sales in Germany in 1967 outsold The Rolling Stones and The Beatles. Hits include Bend It\, Zabadak\, The Legend Of Xanadu\, and many more. This fast-moving energetic set from DBMT will have you dancing and singing in the aisles\, performing hit after hit.  \n\n\n\nMIKE d’ABO was the only man who could fill Paul Jones’ shoes as frontman for Manfred Mann. Already attracting attention with his group\, A Band Of Angels\, Mike was thrust into a wider limelight with the Manfreds\, and the well-oiled hit machine kept rolling on. Just Like A Woman\, Semi-Detached Suburban Mr James and Mighty Quinn were just three of the string of hits with the ‘new boy’ in the line-up. And\, like his predecessor\, Mike’s career after the disbanding of the Manfreds in 1969 lost none of its momentum. He’d already proved his impressive songwriting skill by composing Build Me Up Buttercup for The Foundations and Handbags & Gladrags\, a massive hit for Chris Farlowe. \n\n\n\nTHE FORTUNES. Hailing from Birmingham\, England\, the band first came into prominence in 1964 with their hit single Caroline\, which was used as the signature tune for the influential Pirate Radio Station of the same name. Other classics include Storm In A Teacup\, You’ve Got Your Troubles\, Freedom Come Freedom Go. The Fortunes continue to tour the world with shows in Australia\, New Zealand and The USA\, incorporating a week-long residency in fabulous Las Vegas. \n\n\n\nTHE SWINGING BLUE JEANS. The SBJ have a history that spans back to the early 1960s. Over the years\, their hit singles Hippy Hippy Shake\, You’re No Good\, Good Golly Miss Molly and Don’t Make Me Over have been the bedrock of the band’s memorable live performances. The Swinging Blue Jeans have been led by Alan Lovell\, faithfully carrying on the band’s long tradition. Peter Oakman continues with the band to this day\, along with Jeff Bannister and Graham Hollingworth\, who complete the line-up. \n\n\n\nVANITY FARE. Formed in 1966 (often misspelt Vanity Fair\, due to the similarity of the novel and magazine title) is a British pop/rock group famously known for such hits as\, I Live For The Sun\, Early In The Morning and the worldwide classic\, Hitchin A Ride which scored the band a number one on the Billboard 100 in the USA. The harmonies of Vanity Fare are renowned throughout the sixties scene\, which makes them one of the best vocal groups still touring today. \n\n\n\nStep back in time to when pop music was at its very best. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important ticketing information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTicketing information\n\n\n\nPrices: From £29.75Tickets are subject to a transaction fee \n\n\n\nDuration: 3 hours\, including an interval. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout New Theatre Oxford\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\nThere has been a theatre on George Street for almost 170 years. SUMMARY:Lou Lyne & the Blue Almond Project
DESCRIPTION:Lou Lyne & the Blue Almond Project\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Lou Lyne & the Blue Almond Project\n\n\n\nLou Lyne’s been on the music scene for many years. She’s the cellist in Oxford-based cinematic Arabic jazz band ‘Brickwork Lizards’\, and has also worked and toured with Saint Etienne\, Nick Cope\, and Pete Gow and played on Disney’s live action remake of Aladdin. \n\n\n\nNow\, for the first time\, she’s fronting the stage with her debut album “Thinking of Blue Almonds”. The album is an exquisite set of instrumental pieces scored for violin\, viola\, cello\, and piano. Lou’s music comes from the heart. \n\n\n\nIt weaves together subtly shifting tonalities\, Debussy-esque shimmers\, nods to Yann Tiersen\, and the occasional Arabic inflection to create a glorious and emotive sound world utterly her own. The pieces reflect wordlessly and beautifully on the themes of love\, loss\, and longing. \n\n\n\nThe quartet features Vanessa McNaught on viola (Adderbury Ensemble)\, Jane Griffiths on fiddle (Owl Light Trio)\, Ashton Gray (Sparsholt Collective) on piano\, and Lou Lyne on cello. \n\n\n\nCDs will be available to buy on the night for £10 each or can be pre-ordered with your ticket at a slight discount. SUMMARY:Faces Amongst Spaces - a solo exhibition by Veronica Wells
DESCRIPTION:Faces Amongst Spaces – a solo exhibition by Veronica Wells.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Faces Amongst Spaces – a solo exhibition by Veronica Wells.\n\n\n\nVeronica Wells is returning to the Sarah Wiseman Gallery for her solo show – Faces Amongst Spaces – exploring the ever-evolving fashion world in her figurative brush strokes. \n\n\n\nVeronica is an emerging talent\, specialising in fashion-inspired portraiture. She draws her influences from popular culture\, examining images that portray an idealised way of life. \n\n\n\nFashion\, material possessions\, image\, style\, and relationships are all explored – enticing the viewer into her world. Mixing rough and broad brushstrokes with finer and more intricate details\, Veronica’s paintings question ideas of perfection. \n\n\n\nVeronica explains\, “The effect of the paint lends an unrefined touch to the glamour portrayed and gives a feel of the momentary – like a Polaroid hung up to view a passing snapshot in time.” \n\n\n\nGallery director Sarah Wiseman said: “We felt that it was the perfect time for a solo show by Veronica. We’ve worked with her for several years\, and we’ve seen her really get into her stride as a painter. For our twenty-fifth anniversary\, we felt that Veronica’s work perfectly encapsulates that sense of celebration\, strength\, and individuality.” \n\n\n\nVeronica Wells has recently completed a commission arranged by the Sarah Wiseman Gallery on behalf of the British Fashion designer Jenny Packham. “Jenny has collected paintings by Veronica for years from us since visiting our stand at the Affordable Art Fair back in 2012\,” added Sarah Wiseman. \n\n\n\nThe commission was to celebrate Jenny’s collaboration with EON Productions on the sixtieth anniversary of the James Bond films. Jenny produced a capsule collection of gowns\, one of which was worn by HRH The Duchess of Cambridge (as she was titled then) at the world premiere of ‘James Bond: No Time to Die’ at Royal Albert Hall in London in 2021.

As he prepared to return home\, Haydn was slipped a libretto on the subject of the creation of the universe originally conceived for Handel. \n\n\n\nWhen The Creation was first performed seven years later\, Haydn was overcome yet again – this time by his own achievements. In representing chaos and the creation of light\, the oratorio’s elemental inspiration transcends the boundaries of its era. \n\n\n\nIn the building where Haydn received his Oxford doctorate\, the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra is joined by soloists and the Choir of Merton College for Haydn’s most inspired ‘creation’. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBook tickets via the event website or call Oxford Philharmonic‘s Box Office on 01865 980980 (Monday to Friday from 9.00am to 5.00pm). \n\n\n\nPlease see important ticketing information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTicketing information\n\n\n\nPrices:Full price – £15.00\, £28.00\, £38.00\, £48.00Student price – from £5.00 \n\n\n\nDuration:140 minutes\, including an interval of 20 minutes. \n\n\n\nTimes:Doors open at 7.00pm in readiness for a 7:30pm concert start. \n\n\n\nAge guidance:Suitable for ages 6+ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganiser\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFeaturing\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Sheldonian Theatre\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nHome to ceremonial occasions and a raft of exciting events\, the magnificent and versatile Sheldonian Theatre is the focal point of the University of Oxford and is a unique space to experience live music. \n\n\n\nTo see an interactive map of the theatre\, click here. \n\n\n\nFind out more about the Sheldonian Theatre\, including facilities\, access and venue information.
