SUMMARY:Stories of Oxford Tours
DESCRIPTION:Stories of Oxford Tours\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Stories of Oxford Tours\n\n\n\nThese guided tours are led by a dedicated volunteer team and will give you an introduction to the people and stories of Oxford. \n\n\n\nThe guides will take you on their personalised highlights tour around the Museum\, lasting 30-45 minutes\, with time for questions at the end. \n\n\n\nFrom football to fairgrounds\, marmalade to Morris Motors\, patron saints to pubs\, barges\, bones\, and all types of quirky customs — there’s something for everyone in the stories of Oxford and its people. \n\n\n\nMeet in the Museum of Oxford’s Gift Shop\, inside the Oxford Town Hall. \n\n\n\nEach tour has a capacity of 10 people. \n\n\n\nThere are several topics to choose from as follows: \n\n\n\nA history of Oxford in 6 objects  \n\n\n\nAlways wanted to know about our city? Come and listen to a guide take you from Saxon times to the present day. The guide will use six objects to explain Oxford’s history\, including the city origins\, the city and the University\, the English Civil War\, literary Oxford\, scientific Oxford and industrial Oxford. \n\n\n\nAn introduction to Oxford’s past \n\n\n\nWhat is it that is unique about Oxford? The city is well known around the world. This tour identifies some of the features that have made the city so special. From the Saxon period when the city was already an important settlement\, through the development of the university\, the important role played by the city in the English Civil Wars\, to more recent features such as the growth of the car industry under the leadership of William Morris\, the Covered Market and the important literary figures linked to the city\, the tour will give you an insight which should stimulate interest in finding out more. The Museum is an ideal starting point for you to discover Oxford’s amazing past. \n\n\n\nArtisan Oxford: Arts\, Crafts\, and Creations \n\n\n\nWhat connects James Bond’s favourite breakfast with the South Pole? How did a small Oxford boutique become the “Holy Grail” of fashion? Encompassing cutting-edge design\, folk frivolities\, and extremely rare architecture\, (not the spire kind); Oxford Arts is unique. Explore our city’s rich creative heritage through a hand-picked selection of artisan objects. \n\n\n\nOxford Night Out \n\n\n\nSince medieval times Oxford has been famous for its vibrant social and cultural scene\, making it one of the best places for a night out in the UK. In this tour\, we will explore four aspects of a night out in Oxford through the ages: pubs\, music venues\, cinema and theatre\, and St. Giles Fair\, highlighting topics of celebrity\, disorder\, and hygiene. I hope you can join me on what promises to be an exciting and\, at times\, surprising\, tour. \n\n\n\nThe Oxford Story \n\n\n\nThis tour will explore the stories of the city\, and the city of stories. This includes Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland\, Oxford’s cinemas\, and Oxford as a film location and place of inspiration for stories. \n\n\n\nThis Talented Town \n\n\n\nA mixture of Oxford city specialities\, this tour will highlight the achievements of some of the extraordinary people from this spectacular town. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTickets prices: \n\n\n\nFrom £2.00 \n\n\n\nTickets are available to purchase online (subject to a transaction fee of £0.88) or at the Museum shop. \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\n\n15 & 20 February\n\n\n\n01\, 04\, 15 & 27 March\n\n\n\n05\, 19 & 22 April\n\n\n\n03\, 08\, 17 & 30 May\n\n\n\n07\, 17 & 21 June\n\n\n\n12\, 17\, 26 & 29 July\n\n\n\n02\, 12\, 23 & 26 August\n\n\n\n04\, 16 & 27 September\n\n\n\n02\, 14\, 18 & 23 October\n\n\n\n01\, 04\, 15 & 20 November\n\n\n\n\nRunning time: \n\n\n\n1 hour \n\n\n\nAge guidance: \n\n\n\nAdults and 12+ \n\n\n\nPhoto consent: \n\n\n\nPlease be aware that photographs may be taken at this event for use in marketing. DESCRIPTION:Bach 1725\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Bach 1725\n\n\n\nA unique celebration marking 300 years since the composition and first performance of Johann Sebastian Bach’s 1725 Ascension Day Cantata Auf Christi Himmelfahrt allein.  \n\n\n\nThis momentous occasion also marks the arrival of Bach’s rare original manuscript of the cantata\, bequeathed to the Bodleian Library\, one of only four of the composer’s manuscripts in the UK. I have had the good fortune to work with some of the greatest composers of our time\, including Andrew Lloyd Webber\, Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson\, Elton John\, and Alan Menken\, without whose wonderful melodies I’d be at home watching television. \n\n\n\nYou’ll probably know quite a few of the songs – and will therefore be relieved to hear I won’t be singing them. All musical aspects of the show I hand over to the outstanding Duncan Waugh Band and West End Singers. There will be plenty of stops in between the hits during which I’ll tell you how they happened and\, in some cases\, nearly didn’t. Actually\, I might sing a little – but not Don’t Cry For Me Argentina.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWatch the trailer\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFrom £32.00 \n\n\n\nTickets are subject to a transaction fee of £3.95 \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nThursday 08 May 2025 at 7.30pm \n\n\n\nRunning time: \n\n\n\nThis show has an interval \n\n\n\nLocation: \n\n\n\nMain auditorium \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Aylesbury Waterside Theatre\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nAylesbury Waterside Theatre is a stunning modern venue at the heart of Buckinghamshire’s cultural scene. \n\n\n\nOpened in 2010\, its striking wooden interior takes inspiration from the rolling Chiltern Hills\, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Their show this Art Weeks features silver metal sculpture in many forms by several very talented sculptors\, all set in a peaceful leafy setting. \n\n\n\nSarah Wiseman Gallery are pleased to present Glitch\, a solo show by printmaker Ade Adesina. Growing up in Nigeria and then moving to Aberdeen\, Ade’s works are imaginary compositions of the juxtaposing landscapes. \n\n\n\nHeavy machinery sits among safari wildlife\, clouds are often found suspended from metal chains in a bleak sky\, and baobab trees dominate man-made cityscapes.
