BBC Radio 1 presenter\, the late John Peel\, made it his single of the year. \n\n\n\nThey are particularly proud of their UK chart success with songs such as I Will Love You and When You Were Sweet Sixteen\, which in turn helped bring Irish folk and traditional music to a completely new audience. The band made their Top of the Pops debut in 1981. \n\n\n\nEddie Furey recalls how “many musicians have told us we influenced them after hearing a record from their parents’ or grandparents’ collection”. \n\n\n\nDave Stewart of The Eurythmics has credited Eddie with teaching him his first chords on the guitar while still a teenager. Eddie would return the compliment by joining Dave on stage in Paris for a jam during Dave’s wedding to Bananarama’s Siobhan Fahey. \n\n\n\nTheir emotive songs stir many emotions\, tears and laughter\, sadness and joy. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWatch the trailer\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFrom £30.50 \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nMonday 11 May 2026 at 7.30pm \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Mill Arts Centre\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nThe Mill Arts Centre is the cultural hub for Banbury and the surrounding area. \n\n\n\nAs the only dedicated arts provision in the area\, it aims to inspire creativity and enrich the lives of the communities by providing a high-quality\, varied artistic\, educational and participatory programme. \n\n\n\nIt plays a significant role in the town’s cultural\, social and economic development by offering the community the chance to engage with and be entertained by several art forms. \n\n\n\nThe Mill Arts Centre offers an exciting live events programme\, including theatre\, dance\, music\, comedy\, film\, workshops and classes. DESCRIPTION:Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra: Brahms and Tchaikovsky\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra: Brahms and Tchaikovsky\n\n\n\nTchaikovsky Souvenir de Florence\, Op. 70 \n\n\n\nBrahms String Sextet No. 1 in B flat major\, Op. 18 \n\n\n\nCarmine Lauri violin \n\n\n\nAnna-Liisa Bezrodny violin \n\n\n\nJon Thorne viola \n\n\n\nJonathan Barritt viola \n\n\n\nMats Lidström cello \n\n\n\nJane Salmon cello \n\n\n\nMembers of the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra come together for an exhilarating evening of supersized chamber music\, guaranteed to set the pulse racing. \n\n\n\nTchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence is a work of turbulent anguish masquerading as one of utter joie de vivre\, in which a thick-set ensemble dances its way around a tune the composer noted down during an otherwise fruitless trip to the Tuscan capital. \n\n\n\nBrahms’s own sextet for strings is an early work that combines Mozart’s charm\, Beethoven’s exuberance\, Mendelssohn’s momentum and Brahms’s own luxuriance – and to quite magnificent effect. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nStandard – £30.00 \n\n\n\nStudents – £5.00 \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nSaturday 16 May 2026 at 7.30pm \n\n\n\nRunning time: \n\n\n\n2 hours \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Holywell Music Room\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nThe Holywell Music Room in Oxford is one of the oldest purpose-built concert halls in Europe and a treasured cultural landmark in the city. Situated on Holywell Street\, close to the heart of the University of Oxford\, it was constructed in 1748 and is celebrated for its remarkable acoustics and intimate atmosphere. \n\n\n\nOften considered the first dedicated music venue in England\, the Holywell Music Room has hosted performances for over two centuries. It has historical ties to esteemed composers like Haydn and has been a key location for classical music in the region. The building’s interior reflects the elegance of Georgian architecture\, with a design that prioritises sound quality. Seating around 200 people\, it provides an immersive and personal concert experience. \n\n\n\nThe venue remains an active hub for musical performances\, regularly showcasing chamber music\, solo recitals\, and other classical events. It is used extensively by the University of Oxford and local cultural organisations. Conveniently located in central Oxford\, the Holywell Music Room continues to attract music lovers and visitors who appreciate its historical and artistic significance. \n\n\n\nVisit the venue information page for further details.

SUMMARY:The Unthanks
DESCRIPTION:The Unthanks\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Unthanks\n\n\n\nHow many artists have journeyed through as much musical ground as The Unthanks over the past two decades? \n\n\n\nBBC 6 Music regulars\, but equally to be found on Radios 2\, 3 and 4\, the Tyneside band are like magpies\, picking up undiscovered jewels\, reframing history and drawing on the worlds of folk\, jazz\, orchestral\, electronica and art-rock to create their own unique truth and beauty. \n\n\n\nThey have won Mojo Magazine Folk Album of the Year twice\, they were the only British folk representation in The Guardian’s and Uncut’s Best Albums of the Decade (worldwide\, all genres)\, and count amongst their admirers fellow storytellers including Elvis Costello\, Maxine Peake\, Michael Sheen\, Rosanne Cash\, Martin Freeman\, Robert Wyatt\, Martin Hayes\, Nick Hornby\, Ben Myers and Dawn French. \n\n\n\nUsing the traditional music of the North East of England as a starting point\, the influence of Miles Davis\, Steve Reich\, Sufjan Stevens\, Robert Wyatt\, Antony & The Johnsons\, King Crimson and Tom Waits can be heard in the band’s 16 records to date\, earning them a Mercury Music Prize nomination and international acclaim along the way. \n\n\n\nThe Unthanks are constantly evolving. They have scaled up for orchestral and brass band shows\, drawing on the arranging and composing skills of self-taught band leader Adrian McNally\, and paired right back for the unaccompanied live record Diversions Vol 5\, drawing on the traditional singing backgrounds of Rachel and Becky Unthank and Niopha Keegan. \n\n\n\nThey’ve created song cycles from Emily Brontë’s poetry\, site-specific theatre with Maxine Peake\, soundtracks for Mackenzie Crook’s Worzel Gummidge\, had music used on HBO’s True Detective\, Peaky Blinders\, Vera\, and The Detectorists\, and a string of ‘Diversions’ interpreting the work of Molly Drake\, Anohni and Robert Wyatt. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWatch the trailer\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReviews\n\n\n\n\n“Few of their contemporaries\, within both folk music and the wider artistic spectrum\, have such a keenly-honed ability to locate in a song the emotional essence that can\, in just a single phrase or vocal elision\, cut one to the quick.” \n\n\n\nThe Independent \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\n£32.00 \n\n\n\nAll prices include any booking fees \n\n\n\nDates & times: \n\n\n\nSaturday 16 May 2026 at 7.30pm \n\n\n\nRunning time: \n\n\n\n1 hour 50 minutes \n\n\n\nLocation: \n\n\n\nThe Theatre \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Theatre Chipping Norton\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nThe Theatre Chipping Norton\, sometimes called The Theatre\, Chipping Norton or Chipping Norton Theatre\, is a theatre\, an arthouse cinema\, a gallery and a concert hall in Chipping Norton. \n\n\n\nThe theatre has has 217 seats\, including stalls and a balcony. SUMMARY:Summer Concert May 2026
DESCRIPTION:Summer Concert May 2026\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Summer Concert May 2026\n\n\n\nGioachino Rossini\, world-famous at 21\, admired by Beethoven and Schubert\, and the greatest writer of comic opera\, more or less gave up composing at 37. (Health\, wealth\, several houses and a new mistress?) \n\n\n\nHowever\, at the age of 71\, he composed the Petite Messe Solennelle\, one of the most intriguing works of the 19th century. \n\n\n\nNeither short nor solemn\, the title is either a joke or refers to the small forces he had in mind: 12 singers (including castrati)\, two pianos and a harmonium. Behind the shimmering tunefulness is music of great majesty\, rigour\, depth and hushed solemnity. \n\n\n\nToo long for a church service\, it was first performed in a Parisian salon. Quirkily\, it quotes a composer friend writing in the style of Palestrina in the opening Kyrie and has an extended piano solo as the Offertorium. \n\n\n\nAbove all\, Rossini’s mature genius for melody and musical architecture is dazzling throughout. \n\n\n\nWith four superb soloists\, a harmonium and the inclusion of a performance of Rossini’s ‘Première communion’ from ‘Péchés de vieillesse’ (‘Sins of Old Age’) by dazzling pianist Julian Littlewood\, you are guaranteed a wonderful and memorable spring evening. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease see important booking information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking information\n\n\n\nTicket prices: \n\n\n\nFrom £20.00 \n\n\n\nA fee of £1.50 per transaction applies to bookings for this event across all channels – website\, phone and in-person bookings at the Box Office.
