Today\, it is hard to imagine that these buildings and this community ever existed. \n\n\n\nThis 90-minute circular walking tour will bring the lost buildings\, streets and people of St Ebbe’s to life. On the walk\, you will discover the fragments that still remain of a district which once housed thousands\, along with the stories of the people who lived\, loved\, drank\, ate\, worked and shopped there. \n\n\n\nGuided by Maurice East\, local Oxford resident and historian\, you will see the lost streets\, alleyways\, yards and homes come alive amidst the present-day monoliths of the Westgate shopping centre and Speedwell House. \n\n\n\nJoin a tour of the Lost Streets of St Ebbe’s to discover why this community grew\, how it thrived\, and why it was so brutally destroyed. \n\n\n\nAs part of the tour\, you will see: The Wharf House Pub\, one of the last remaining buildings from the historic residential district\, Speedwell Street and the plans to modernise Oxford by clearing a ‘slum’\, three surviving 17th century cottages – and more historic locations that will be brought to life on this walk. \n\n\n\nAccessibility and further information: \n\n\n\nMeeting point: Museum of Oxford shop (located inside the Oxford Town Hall). The first theatre was built in 1836\, and a second in 1886. It is now owned by the Ambassador Theatre Group and hosts everything from ballet and opera to musicals. \n\n\n\nOn performance days\, the Box Office opens at noon and closes 15 minutes after the show starts. With trains not running on Discovery Days\, there is a rare opportunity to see the locomotives up close. \n\n\n\nA colourful Centre Guide helps visitors navigate the site\, from the original 1932 Engine Shed to the impressive collection of preserved locomotives\, including 5900 Hinderton Hall. Guests can step onto the footplate and hear staff in character as they bring the engines to life\, capturing the rhythms of a working steam-era shed. \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nAcross the site\, the Engine Shed atmosphere is carefully recreated\, with sounds and details that evoke daily railway life. The first theatre was built in 1836\, and a second in 1886. It is now owned by the Ambassador Theatre Group and hosts everything from ballet and opera to musicals. \n\n\n\nOn performance days\, the Box Office opens at noon and closes 15 minutes after the show starts. If there is a performance on a Sunday or Bank Holiday\, Box Office will open 2 hours before the show begins and close 15 minutes after the show starts. \n\n\n\nThere is a large air-conditioned bar with seating located below the Stalls Foyer\, two further bars in the Circle Foyer and an additional one at the back of the balcony.
